Since interest in steampunkery is staying fairly energetic here, let's try this.
Consider this thread a news drop for new projects, sites, photos, things spotted on the web of interest, exhibits, magazines, whatever. If you spot something interesting, drop a note and/or a photo, and a link, right here.

OK, so The Willows might not be new, and might not have the same production values as another magazine I shall never tire of mentioniong (though I'll forego you the pleasure here - and in any case, MD only features the occasional steampunk story), but it looks the part with its black and white covers and Victorian artwork. I've not yet read any of the three copies I have stiing on my enormous "to read" pile but the cover to May/June 2008 does temp me from time to time. And it even has its own thread here.

in the interest of full disclosure, I know someone that works for signal path and he sent me information on this thing a couple of days ago and imho it is pretty cool, if not completely steampunk.

what I find very cool is that it uses an actual tube preamp to "smooth out the sound"
it would be easy to make it more steampunkish by using brass instead of the stainless steel faceplate,

Here is what I've been working on for Steampunk Magazine. I'm just waiting to hear the dimensions they want them for.

I barely got a chance to check out The Edison before leaving Los Angeles. I haven't found anything remotely like it in NYC and this city is the poorer for it. Regular nights can get pricey but some Wednesdays they have Lucent Dossier playing there, which I've been told is a blast. They've had Abney Park play, to rave reviews. And Thursday happy hour features a cocktail for 35 cents.
Also you can get milk and cookies.
It's a gorgeous place. But they wouldn't let me move in. Though I will say it's rather more steam than punk. Can't say I really care. Here, have some pictures:

A steampunk-themed brewpub is opening in Durham North Carolina, USA, shortly. I am not connected with this, I just think it's excellent. They plan to focus on beer and pie (sweet and savory both.)

@LBA: I'm in RTP. Fullsteam is is the project of a friend of a friend, and I'm looking forward to seeing it open. And I don't even like beer, generally speaking. But I will stop in for dinner as often as I can. -

Just published at WEIRD TALES: Five Thoughts on the Popularity of Steampunk. -
I'm fascinated by steampunk but I don't have the technical know-how or the patience, to get creating.* There are also some aspects of the community and the whole idea of steampunk that sort of bother me. For one thing, I think the 'punk' aspects of steampunk (if there were ever any punk aspects to begin with) seem to have been ignored by the army of cosplayers who have descended on the community. Another thing which annoys me is that if steampunk is about 'rebelling' against the cold, commercialization of modern society, then why escape to a period in history when the craftsman was a dying breed and mass-production was just beginning to start in earnest? One more thing, when you get right down to it, an Ipod covered in brass and knobs and rivets is still and Ipod, right?
Having said all that, I really do see the appeal of steampunk, after all, who doesn't like top hats and monograms? The community is also introducing a new generation to do-it-yourself mechanics, that may come in handy when the zombie-apocolypse begins...
*For one of my summer holiday projects however, I plan on creating an electric bycicle, from there anything may happen eh? -

I just stumbled across a wublink for a shop in the Melbourne CBD in Australia, known as Wunderkammer. A delightful little place full of New World curios. A little light on the fantastical technology side of things, but full of fossils, medical instruments, entymological samples and elderly maps. I'm yet to get in there for an afternoon lost in wonder, but I'll have to do so soon for sure!
