OK, so The Willows might not be new, and might not have the same production values as another magazine I shall never tire of mentioniong (though I'll forego you the pleasure here - and in any case, MD only features the occasional steampunk story), but it looks the part with its black and white covers and Victorian artwork. I've not yet read any of the three copies I have stiing on my enormous "to read" pile but the cover to May/June 2008 does temp me from time to time. And it even has its own thread here.

I barely got a chance to check out The Edison before leaving Los Angeles. I haven't found anything remotely like it in NYC and this city is the poorer for it. Regular nights can get pricey but some Wednesdays they have Lucent Dossier playing there, which I've been told is a blast. They've had Abney Park play, to rave reviews. And Thursday happy hour features a cocktail for 35 cents.

Also you can get milk and cookies.

It's a gorgeous place. But they wouldn't let me move in. Though I will say it's rather more steam than punk. Can't say I really care. Here, have some pictures:

I'm kind of a sucker for this stuff.

I'm fascinated by steampunk but I don't have the technical know-how or the patience, to get creating.* There are also some aspects of the community and the whole idea of steampunk that sort of bother me. For one thing, I think the 'punk' aspects of steampunk (if there were ever any punk aspects to begin with) seem to have been ignored by the army of cosplayers who have descended on the community. Another thing which annoys me is that if steampunk is about 'rebelling' against the cold, commercialization of modern society, then why escape to a period in history when the craftsman was a dying breed and mass-production was just beginning to start in earnest? One more thing, when you get right down to it, an Ipod covered in brass and knobs and rivets is still and Ipod, right?

Having said all that, I really do see the appeal of steampunk, after all, who doesn't like top hats and monograms? The community is also introducing a new generation to do-it-yourself mechanics, that may come in handy when the zombie-apocolypse begins...

*For one of my summer holiday projects however, I plan on creating an electric bycicle, from there anything may happen eh?

There's this once-a-year Steampunk ball/party/gig thing in London called White Mischief. It's held in the Scala, a turn of the century art deco cinema across two stages and lots of little things inbetween.

It's on next Saturday, 23rd May. The acts include a guy who juggles chainsaws, burlesque shows, bands with names like Top Shelf Jazz, The Bohemianauts and The Correspondents, who are a musical duo that scat-raps over drum and bass remixes of 1930s jazz records. They are quite excellent.

Due to date clashing, it turns out that the group of friends I normally go with are all busy that night. I would like to know if anyone fancies donning a waistcoat or corset for the evening, since I don't exactly want to go on my own. Tickets are 17.50. Yes yes?

http://www.whitemischief.info/next-show/flyers-for-past-shows/saturday-may-23-2009-journey-to-the-centre-of-the-earth

My friend designs and makes Steampunk jewellry for men and women including watches and other accessories if you're interested. Search for Enlyl on Etsy (site blocked at work so can't post the URL or any of her pictures I'm afraid!) I gave my father some of her antique Steampunk cufflinks for Father's Day last year. They're not so expensive either! I like the key earrings too - they seem so oldy worldy, like they're from a long forgotten time with a story to them.

			 A Giant Awakes in Nantes

Nantes, the home town of Jules Verne, is situated in western France. Here, near the river Loire a giant deep-sea diver sleeps gently, waiting for his task to begin. Sadness marks his face even as he sleeps. He has been searching the world over for his missing niece and although he may not know it, the end of his search is coming. The diver or scaphandrier as he is known in French will be paraded through the streets of this historic city at the beginning of the Estuary 2009 arts festival. The biannual festival gives the French mechanical marionette street theater company Royale de Luxe the opportunity to unveil their latest creation.

I posted about this band in the Music forum, but as I don't come here often I didn't realize there's a Steampunk thread already going. You know how Abney Park claims to be a steampunk band but sounds essentially like every other electric band - except they're singing about being airship pirates or something?

This isn't that.

This is The Clockwork Quarter.

It's steampunk music (violin, cello, accordion, typewriters and ticking watches for percussions, etc) available for free on their website. It's also creative commons, so you can mess with it and release that if you like. There are only two songs up so far. I'm hoping we can encourage more from them.

The concept of the band is that the music describes each of the passengers on a train running between London and Dover. Give it a listen, support creative projects. And I'd add that their blog is worth a read, too.

Steampunk culture is growing in popularity, and Comic-Con has long been a welcome home for its aesthetic and imaginary universe. Hollywood films and Comic-Con fare like "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" (based on Alan Moore's graphic novel), "Steamboy", and the new Tim Burton produced "9", all feature steampunk aesthetics and themes. Steampunks show up at Comic-Con because of this affinity and the opportunity to show off their latest costumes, which draw photographers from every corner of the convention center.

Steampunk Magazine Author arrested during G20 protests for tweeting and then police start harassment search and seizure

SteamPunk Magazine author (and, honestly, the inspiration for SteamPunk Magazine) Professor Calamity is facing two felonies for allegedly running a twitter account. He has been accused of running a twitter feed of police movements during the Pittsburgh G-20 protests, protests for which the police are already being sued.

To add insult to felony charges, they raided his house in NYC for 16 hours, confiscating everything from hammers to computers to SteamPunk Magazine. Their lawyer has already convinced a judge to put a stop on the police searching of their personal possessions, because the raid is absolutely insane.

SteamPunk’s Professor Calamity faces multiple felonies for twittering

And they stood and watched us for hours and hours and hours. 16 hours to be precise, 16 hours of the NYPD and FBI traipsing through our house, confiscating our lives in a fishing expedition related to the G20 protests of September 24th and 25th. The search warrant, when we were finally allowed to read it, mentioned violation of federal rioting laws and was vague enough to allow the entire house to be searched. They kept repeating that we were not arrested, that we were free to go. But being free meant being watched by the FBI, monitored while using the bathroom, not allowed to make phone calls for hours or to observe them ransacking our rooms. Being free meant they took two of us away on bullshit summonses, and even though this was our house, where we lived, if we left, we could not re-enter.

So it seems that our police have learned a few things from the Iranian Election aftermath

As with the Stuff From Around the Net (Dec) thread, I once again direct you to the absolutely incredible, baroque art of one Mister Keith Thompson. In this instance, his "Honorable Brass Lion." Attached to each peice on his is a detailed description thereof and, usually, a brief backstory. I went to the League of STEAM show on Sunday 17 January. The site was interesting as it was cafe/restaurant with only a moderate amount of room for dining parties and at least two bars. Lots of character though, with Victorian-ish decor (not steampunk-y, but still). They didn't get to do much of an actual show because the major space was an open air courtyard and it was raining off and on Sunday, at times quite heavily. Would have gummed up the steamworks.... There was at least one demonstration but I missed it, unfortunately. Otherwise most of the "machinery" was crowded into one room while the League explained and gave a couple of demonstrations in the tiny space. In other rooms ZED and the ghost wandered around and the crowd had to avoid as necessary (ZED occasionally did find his collar loose and start going berzerk until someone called someone from the League over to pry him off a hapless audience member). One other room had articles the League retained from various escapades.

Altogether extremely cool. You can take a look at my 20+ picturesat my concerts gallery, though you may have to scroll past pics from other shows. Here are a few sample photos:

a jump pack powered by ectoplasm

They didn't directly call it a Voight-Kampff machine but they did say it was originated by Drs Voight & Kampff to determine the nature of the person taking the morality test. You strapped in, held onto electrodes and answered hypotheticals meant to see how humane you were while staring into the telescope, presumably hypnotized by target.

ZED, the pet zombie

I caught the least about the ghost, but I can tell you she glows a soft neon blue, sadly washed out by my camera's flash.

Voight-Kampff technician. His costume is typical for the League, they all work that hard and are that thorough on every detail of their clothes and accessories.

And of course,

ROSE! Also, I visited the Steampunk exhibition in Oxford on the weekend. It was fun and there was some real nice work on display although I prefer my SP to be a lot less cos-play and a little more design centered (if that makes any sense).

this

as opposed to this

for me though, what really detracted from the exhibition was the setting. With the possible exception of the two beautiful computer keyboards (which were easily my favourite pieces) there was nothing in the steampunk room that could hold a candle to the beauty of the actual real scientific equipment on display elsewhere in the museum. the astolabes and the microscopes were eye candy of the highest order. If you ever get a chance to visit then really do because it's well worth it.

As is the Pitt Rivers anthropology museum which needs a weekend of it's own to even begin to scratch the surface of what's on show.

Took a call today at work from a lady representing 'Green Steam Circus' who was inquiring about us being a vendor a their event. I think my boss is going to go for it, so I might go check it out.

Green Steam Circus
The Backyard, Beecaves (Austin) TX
3:00 pm – Midnight

Welcome to a movement to create a green, interactive festival with a steam punk theme. Our intention is to invoke the patrons’ creativity and participation in a Jules Vern meets Mad Max musical circus extravaganza. Imagine a world of steam power and clever invention; of jugglers and clowns and trapeze; of bands and DJs and dancing. There will be a circus-style midway laced with performers that will lead to the main stage where the musicians and DJs will entice your body to dance till you drop…or laugh till your face hurts! So don your top hats or bowlers, dust off your goggles and set your pocket watches because on May 15th we travel to a realm of mind-blowing, nostalgic fantasy that you’ll never forget.
