You may already be familiar with the work of Andrew Chase, who has been designing a series of mechanical animals for a picture book called the Trionic Morphatractable Engineer. The cheetah messenger is his latest. A photographer and designer by day, Chase invents anatomically complicated animals out of metal, including elephants, a giraffe, and now this cheetah


Looking down the queue, it was as if everyone stepped out of a Victorian tintype and time traveled to Comic-Con. Steampunk culture is growing in popularity, and Comic-Con has long been a welcome home for its aesthetic and imaginary universe. Hollywood films and Comic-Con fare like "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" (based on Alan Moore's graphic novel), "Steamboy", and the new Tim Burton produced "9", all feature steampunk aesthetics and themes. Steampunks show up at Comic-Con because of this affinity and the opportunity to show off their latest costumes, which draw photographers from every corner of the convention center.

The project -- a trip through a fantastical dystopian Magic Kingdom -- is being headed by former Deus Ex designer Warren Spector, whose studio was acquired by Disney in 2007 (and who explained why this was such a perfect match in an interview with me at the time). The game was first confirmed to exist last December, when similar images were discovered by artist Gary Glover,
The group reported that in trial runs Friday at Edwards Air Force Base in California, the steam-powered, aircraft-like car outpaced the record speed, hitting 211km/h (131mph). That doesn't officially count as breaking the record, however, since representatives of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) were not on hand to certify the speed. The FIA will be in attendance for the official record attempts between 18 and 22 August. Still, it was a happy occasion for the British Steam Car Challenge team, which has endured its share of technical and logistical difficulties.
