Andrew Chase
From io9You may already be familiar with the work of Andrew Chase, who has been designing a series of mechanical animals for a picture book called the Trionic Morphatractable Engineer. I posted about this band in the Music forum, but as I don't come here often I didn't realize there's a Steampunk thread already going. You know how Abney Park claims to be a steampunk band but sounds essentially like every other electric band - except they're singing about being airship pirates or something?
This isn't that.
This is The Clockwork Quarter.
It's steampunk music (violin, cello, accordion, typewriters and ticking watches for percussions, etc) available for free on their website. It's also creative commons, so you can mess with it and release that if you like. There are only two songs up so far. I'm hoping we can encourage more from them.
The concept of the band is that the music describes each of the passengers on a train running between London and Dover. Give it a listen, support creative projects. And I'd add that their blog is worth a read, too. -

Looking down the queue, it was as if everyone stepped out of a Victorian tintype and time traveled to Comic-Con. Steampunk culture is growing in popularity, and Comic-Con has long been a welcome home for its aesthetic and imaginary universe. Hollywood films and Comic-Con fare like "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" (based on Alan Moore's graphic novel), "Steamboy", and the new Tim Burton produced "9", all feature steampunk aesthetics and themes. Steampunks show up at Comic-Con because of this affinity and the opportunity to show off their latest costumes, which draw photographers from every corner of the convention center.

There's a steampunk series of novels being put out by Abaddon called Pax Britannia.
Most are being written by a guy named Jonathan Green who has his dandy adventurer Ulysses Quicksilver doing derring do.
But Al Ewing has also written one, called El Sombra, which is basically Zorro Vs Nazis in Mexico while they enslave a small town and make it build a steam powered robot! -

A British team is attempting to break the world speed record for steam powered vehicles
The group reported that in trial runs Friday at Edwards Air Force Base in California, the steam-powered, aircraft-like car outpaced the record speed, hitting 211km/h (131mph). That doesn't officially count as breaking the record, however, since representatives of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) were not on hand to certify the speed. The FIA will be in attendance for the official record attempts between 18 and 22 August. Still, it was a happy occasion for the British Steam Car Challenge team, which has endured its share of technical and logistical difficulties.

That's a "fluidic" chip. It carries out logic operations in much the same way as a regular chip except it uses a flow of air rather than a flow of electrons.
It's a lot slower and bigger than its electronic counterpart but that chip apparently has the same processing power as an 8-bit processor like a Z80 - the processor used in the 80s original Nintendo and lots of early home computers. -
