    So Pitchfork has posted their top 50 list of albums this year, and their top 100 tracks of 2007, as well.

    much to my surprise, there are actually about 5-10 records on there that AREN'T just overbloated, self important critical darlings. especially shocked to see NO AGE, MIKA MIKO's brothers in crime, on there.

    Um, I got the Panda Bear album, and I thought then, and still think now, that it's not very good. At all. So I disagree with that.

    Also the Battles album... not very good. There, I think Battles aren't very good, and I said it. Anyone with me? And I generally like that kind of music! It was a big let down for me!

    I liked a lot this year, though, gotta remember what...

    I only recognize about seven of the bands. I suck. It's off to the Lawrence Welk ghetto for me....

    Low "drums and guns" really should have been on that list. pitchfork isn't so snobby they can't admit to liking a band from the 90s.

    the pitchfork list is so-so this year. I agree more than last years.

    But I'm all:

    Working in the music section of a couple alt-weekly papers has pointed out how completely arbitrary arts criticism is. I can assure you that no two staff members as Pitchfork actually agreed on a Top 10 this year, and I doubt any two people on earth would agree on a top 20 albums of the year. For my part, my Top 10 is almost entirely composed of Portland artists, because that's the music scene I've been immersed in, and many of my other favorite new albums are just stuff I'm getting into recently, like Jason Webley and Your Heart Breaks.

    Well, let's take a look at the top 50 list and see what I bought:

    43: Stars of the Lid: "And Their Refinement of the Decline"
    Found this completely unremarkable in comparison to their oeuvre, to be honest. Will re-listen.

    40: Beirut: "The Flying Club Cup / Lon Gisland EP"
    Very fun.

    39: The White Stripes: "Icky Thump"
    Horrible. Just horrible.

    36: Iron and Wine: "The Shepherd's Dog"
    Didn't even know this was out, damnit.

    35: Black Lips: "Good Bad Not Evil"
    A bit meh, really.

    31: Deerhoof: "Friend Opportunity"
    Haven't listened yet.

    30: Caribou: "Andorra"
    Blah.

    27: Arcade Fire: "Neon Bible"
    Really, really uneven. Perhaps perversely, my favourite song off this is "Keep The Car Running."

    24: Dan Deacon: "Spiderman of the Rings"
    Mad as arseholes. Enjoyed it.

    22: Okkervil River: "The Stage Names"
    Nah. "John Allyn Smith Sails" is the greatest thing they've ever done. It's a ridiculous peak on the album, and they may not ever reach it again. I believe that every band has one truly great song in them. I think "Allyn" is theirs.

    14: Deerhunter: "Cryptograms / Fluorescent Grey EP"
    They're very slowly approaching something really good. It'll happen one day, and I want to see it.

    10: Burial: "Untrue"
    Fantastic record on the first few listens. Doesn't quite gel, the more I consider it. But brilliant nonetheless.

    08: Battles: "Mirrored"
    See above re: every band having one great song. Battles' was "Atlas." The rest of the album devolves by stages into that worrying place where mathrock meets free jazz concepts and becomes dissonant muck that is obviously far more fun to play than it is to listen to. Notably, "Atlas" is built on a techno percussion figure, and that's why "Atlas" saves mathrock.

    06: Animal Collective: "Strawberry Jam"
    I love Animal Collective and I don't care what you think.

    05: Of Montreal: "Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?"
    Fuck off. Fuck right off.

    04: Radiohead: "In Rainbows"
    And you. Fuck. Right. Off.

    03: M.I.A.: "Kala"
    Not as good as the last one. She's going to turn into a cultural tourist in the Bjork mode, and it's going to be horrible.

    02: LCD Soundsystem: "Sound of Silver"
    The best thing LCD ever did was get John Cale to cover "All My Friends."

    01: Panda Bear: "Person Pitch"
    I dunno if it was album of the year -- I think UNTRUE was more important -- but this is a gorgeous, wine-scented thing.

    If you ever get a chance to see them live, I highly recommend it. Of course, there's always the possibility that a bottle of whisky made them sound better than they were, but judging from their records I somehow doubt it.

    "Who Could Win a Rabbit" remains one of my favorites.

    Shit, I completely forgot this came out in 2007. It seems so much longer ago to me. Great album.

    I'll have to find a copy of Untrue and give it a listen.
