    From PSFK

Google has filed a patent application for water based data centers. The proposed idea is to have ships full of servers, storage systems and networking gear, anchored up to 7 miles offshore. They could also be mobilized when needed to serve regions where it’s not feasible to build a data center on land. The data barges would be powered by the motion of waves and cooled by the ocean water. Added bonus: the offshore status means no more property taxes.

Add this to Google's plans for geothermal energy and can you say Next Bond Villain?

Along with the taxes, couldn't they store "illegal" data. Someone at Google read Cryptonomicon is what I am thinking.

I wouldn't call them a villain though. It seems to me our villians are being bailed out by a certain country this week.

The Onion had this prediction in 2007 - appropriate for tomorrow.

It's not Sealand or the Crypt though.
