Not sure how many of you are aware of or care about this show, but seeing as this is one of the best places on the web to get opinions from people who have actual working brains, I figure I might as well ask.

What did you make of the third series of The Mighty Boosh?

I have to say I was disappointed. Although there were some redeeming episodes and moments ('The Power of The Crimp' and 'The Strange Tale Of The Crack Fox' in particular), overall I came away with the feeling that this show was a product of writers who had run out of ideas. The gag density seemed far lower than usual, there was too great a reliance on 'fan favourite' characters like The Moon and The Council of Shamans, and the once well executed Howard/Vince dynamic seemed forced, misfiring as often as it hit.

I appreciate that this may sound like the ravings of some kind of obsessive fanboy, but I believe that comedy matters, and it's a shame to find myself wishing that this once great show won't be returning for a 4th series. So if anybody even cares, please let me know I'm alone in finding series 3 a big disappointment.

The middle section of the "Eels" episode -- that entire sequence in the shop with Howard Moon and the Cockney Hitcher -- was brilliance on the scale of the best LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN work. The end section was so fucking cringingly maddeningly ear-wreckingly retardedly horrible that I decided there and then that I did not need to see any more episodes.

Eels - start 12 minutes in, turn it off after the green guy leaves the shop.

Ah, so it's not just me then.

@Screaming Meat, House of Mystery and williac - I'm totally with you on the Conchords reccomendation. Murray Hewwit is probably one of the finest comedy creations of recent years.

@warrenellis - agreed. The 'dancing with elsie' scene was the saving grace of that episode. Deliciously twisted, and visually interesting to boot. While I didn't find the closing song too bad, it certainly seemed like a harbinger of shitness to come.

as soon as i saw noel fielding brandishing a coy of the nme i knew something was up. have actually watched 4 episodes of this series out of sheer boredom, and it's pretty much a chuckle-free zone. recycled characters (hitcher, spirit of jazz, those shaman guys, etc), far too many pop cultural references given that imho the 'parallel universe' feel of the first series was one of the great things about the show. the second series was disappointing too, although the last two episodes (old greg and the desert island one) are among my favourites.

so yes, shark jumped.

far too many pop cultural references given that imho the 'parallel universe' feel of the first series

Yeah, this was definately a part of the problem. I don't have a problem with references per se, but to me it seemed uncertain whether they were affectionaly taking the piss out of the trendy 'people with haircuts, ipods and skinny fit jeans' culture of modern Britain or just pandering to it for the sake of being 'down wit da kids'. Either way, one of a series of missteps.

I thought that it was pretty inferior to what came before simply because throughout the entire third season Vince was this malicious fucking prick who seemed actively out to ruin Howard's life as opposed to being a sort of lackadaisical airhead like before. Ah, I'm glad I'm not the only who disliked the majority of this series.

I did like the Eels episode and the inner space one. The crack fox was good, but a good character in a poorly constructed episode, and I enjoyed the Howard acting sequences and Sammy the crab. But overall it all felt very forced. Vince became massively annoying, seemingly now serving as a conduit for Noel Fielding to gain cool points. Badly repeated characters. Mining of jokes from the second series. And no umpf.

The lighting and back projection stuff was nice though.

Well, if this is a case of art imitating life, and rumours are to be believed, it might be because Noel Fielding's developed a rather nasty coke habit. Or, maybe not. Totally.
Been watching the episodes on the BBCThree site because it clashed with other things on Thursdays. That said, I kept watching because I enjoy Boosh. I did not, however, like it enough to actually bother turning up at the same time every week, hurrah for web previews, and certainly not for season three. There were maybe a handful of genuine laughing out loud moments spread across the whole series, which is a terribly poor ratio.
I think I agree with most of the posts on here, so wont rehash too much, but aside from just not really being very funny, the songs were not as catchy or awesome, and Vince is just absolutely horrible.

It's not like they haven't been funny in other projects they've been in. Julian Barratt's bit part as Padre in Darkplace was sheer genius. I'd also like to see him in some straighter roles, 'cause I think he's got the chops for it. So much so, in fact, that he'd be my number one choice to replace David Tennant on Doctor Who.

Julian Barratt as the Doctor sounds a bit ace, and perhaps more likely than my own secret fantasy of having Bill Bailey in the TARDIS.

I mostly enjoyed series 3 of The Mighty Boosh, anyway. The weakest episodes were the first and last (excluding the mad Eels song, which was ace), and everything inbetween was a joy. The crackfox, Vince's immune system, all the crimping, Naboo's cookery spot and the return of Saboo and Tony Harrison; all of these things made me happy. Sammy The Crab was utter shite, though.

I do agree that it has become a bit like the Noel Fielding Show, which is a shame, as I've always felt it's Barratt's music that propels The Mighty Boosh into the extraordinary. Ah well.
