Joy Division, lightly. Siouxsie and the Banshees. Marylin Manson. Ministry. Drumcorps. Coil. Current 93. Angelo Badalamenti. Old NIN stuff. Some dark Aphex Twin stuff.
Venetian Snares, the Rossz Szillag album especially, and Doll Doll Doll. Bong Ra´s slower stuff. The Killimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. David Bowie´s Outside.
Somatic Responses. Uniform. Wolf Eyes. Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat. Milanese. Depeche Mode. Scorn.

Some of this stuff might be hard to digest for someone at first. It´s a music worth listening to.

I second several of ales kot's suggestions........

Current 93 " Nature Unveiled" instrumental , droney , terrifying.

Coil " Musick to play in the dark "

Some atonal modern classical ? A nice bit of Ligeti ?

well there are a few songs off of Nightmare revisited, the new cover CD for the nightmare before christmas soundtrack.

    what's this, sang by flyleaf
and sally's song by amy lee are both equally subtly spooky in my opinion,

    also,
sorrow by flyleaf is spooky in its own way. especially if you watch the video

I was gonna say the Silent Hill soundtracks but I see a couple people already beat me to it.

the Session 9 soundtrack is good too.

@roque: I don't see why you ought to not say it; it doesn't make it less right.

Which soundtracks in particular? I like the ambient shit from SH2, but the vocal tracks off "0rigins" are amazing.

Here's my list, although I'll admit it's a bit more lighthearted.

    Halloween- Dave Matthews Band
Ghostbusters- Ray Parker Jr. (I'm still waiting for a metal cover of this, btw, so if anyone has one, point it my way)
An Eye Is Upon You- Powerman 5000
    Dread Rock- Paul Oakenfold
    M1A1- Gorillaz
Don't Fear The Reaper- Blue Oyster Cult
    Devil's Dance Floor- Flogging Molly
    I'm Your Boogieman- White Zombie
    Highway To Hell- AC/DC
    Werewolves of London- Warren Zevon
    Dragula (Matrix style) -Rob Zombie
Burn The Witch (UNKLE Variation)- Queens of The Stone Age
    Mitternacht- E Nomine
Grim Grinning Ghosts (yes, the Haunted Mansion Theme)- Barenaked Ladies
Things To Do in Denver When You're Dead- Warren Zevon
It's A Kind Of Magic- Queen (wait...really? I'm not sure this one was my idea.)
Symphony Of Destruction- Megadeath (I get this great vision of an evil Pied Piper leading a horde of dancing zombies through burning streets when i listen to this)
Watch The Sky For Me- Powerman 5000 (my track has the hidden track stuck on the end of it- The Land Of The Dead Is No Place For The Living- makes an awesome contrast)
Heaven, Hell, Or Houston- ZZ Top
    Feed My Frankenstein- Alice Cooper
Sympathy For The Devil- The Rolling Stones
The Man Comes Around- Johnny Cash.

A few others that just now occurred to me:
    Living Dead Girl- Rob Zombie
I Put A Spell On You- Marilyn Manson (one of those rare songs of his that I like, but if you're a purist, go for the original)
Last Day On Earth- Marilyn Manson
Apocalyptica- Anything goes, but I'll recommend Quutamo, Pray!, Harmageddon, Resurrection, and Hall Of The Mountain King.
(ONLY if you're feeling sadistic) Halloween- Aqua
Beast and the Harlot- Avenged Sevenfold (yeah, they're something of a guilty pleasure. but this song is just so upbeat- i had a dream where me and one of my lady friends were evil overlords and we danced to this at our wedding. i crack up every time i hear it now)
    Drink To The Dead- Clutch
Shock the Monkey- Coal Chamber feat. Ozzy
    Dethklok- gotta have Dethklok
    Der Letzte Tag- Elis

i really shouldn't just sit here and go through all 20G of my music...again...

Vox did right by suggesting Alice Cooper's "Feed My Frankenstein," but for true terrifying goodness, you need "Welcome to My Nightmare."

So, I think my playlist is finished. It clocked in at 3 hours, and 39 songs. All of it came from my personal collection, as I only had the coin to buy the Siouxsie song, "Halloween". My wife politely asked if I could include some songs that were danceable also. Try as I could, I only got one of the Castlevania tracks to work within the mix. The other ones kept sounding too much like video game music. Without further ado, my playlist:

    1 Ghosts I - Nine Inch Nails
    Double Dare - Bauhaus
Poison Mind - Michiru Yamane(from the Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles stk)
If I Was Your Vampire - Marilyn Manson
No Ordinary Love - Deftones(cover of the Sade song, has a much darker tone)
    Paint It Black - Deadsy
    Ghost Writer - Daniel Ash
    Introspectre - Depeche Mode
    Lullaby - The Cure
Forsaken - David Draiman(from the Queen of the Damned stk)
Bloodletting (The Vampire Song) - Concrete Blonde
    Maestro - Julien-K
Love Like Blood - Killing Joke
#1 Crush (Nellee Hooper Remix) - Garbage
Halloween - Siouxsie & the Banshees
    Fetisha - Orgy
Me, I'm Not - Nine Inch Nails
    Black No.1 - Type O Negative
I Put A Spell On You - Marilyn Manson
Help Me I Am In Hell - Nine Inch Nails
    Shadowplay - Joy Division
    Bela Lugosi's Dead - Bauhaus
    Black Celebration -Depeche Mode
    Spooky - Daniel Ash
Closer (Precursor) - Nine Inch Nails
    Ghosts - Japan
    Dramatica - Orgy
    She's In Parties - Bauhaus
Down in the Park - Gary Numan & Tubeway Army
    Digital Bath - Deftones
Slept so Long - Jay Gordon(from the Queen of the Damned stk)
    Memphisto - Depeche Mode
    Eye - Smashing Pumpkins
32 Ghosts IV - Nine Inch Nails
    Nature's Revenge - Skinny Puppy
    IsIs - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
    Revival - Orgy
Summer Breeze - Type O Negative
    Burn - The Cure
