Welcome to Whitechapel. We're running on a sleek little Vanilla engine that's as pretty under the hood as she is on the surface, because Warren has excellent taste in software. However, some of you are more familiar with other forum systems, so I've put together a quick starter guide to getting around the place.

User Settings

Once you're signed in, go ahead and click over to the Account tab to set up your WhiteChapel profile.

From the Personal Information section (in the sidebar, under Account Options) you can set up all the standards (Name, Profile Pic, Icon), as well as your Flickr photo feed, and any custom information you'd like to share (Website, birthday, how many cats you own, etc).

Your Flickr photostream id is a string of letters and numbers you can find by looking at your RSS feed on Flickr. It'll look something like 123456789@N01. Just cut and paste that into the "Flickr Feed" box (on the Account Options page) and hit save at the bottom of the page.

You can also Manage your location on the Member Map by setting your latitude and longitude. Use the address QuickFind form at the top of the Manage Map Location page if you don't happen to have those coordinates memorized. If you've got outstanding warrants or don't like people to just drop by, you probably don't want to use your exact address. If you'd like to not show up on the map at all, just use 0,0 as your lat,lon and you'll disappear off the grid.

Oh yes! Always keep your email address up to date in your account profile. We're never going to do anything with that information, but your email address is the only way for you to retrieve your password if you forget it. Again, if you lose your password and didn't have your real email address in your profile, that's it -- we can't get you back in to your account.

Posting and Replies

You can start a new discussion by clicking on the aptly named "Start a new discussion" link at the top of the sidebar. From the compose screen you can pick the appropriate Category, a title, and write your post. The quicktags along the top of the input box are for formatting your text (bold, italic, spoilers, code) and easily inserting links, images, audio and video. Whitechapel supports YouTube/Google video and any mp3 file. Just click the "video/mp3" quicktag, and paste the url of the video or mp3 (just the url of videos, without any of the embed code).

Note: Videos/audio will not show up in the "Preview Post" screen, but everything else (images, formatting) should. Whitechapel does not directly support posting the embed code provided by YouTube, but using the video/mp3 quicktag with the video's URL will automagically embed for you. Linked mp3 audio files will display with a mini audio player in the post, to allow for inline playing.

To reply to a discussion, just scroll to the bottom of the thread and use the "Add your comments" form. Quicktags are the same as for creating a post, and you can preview your comment before adding it to the thread.

If you forget to pick a category when starting a new discussion, or notice a typo after you've posted, the edit link is in the top right corner of your post. Don't forget to close your tags! You can use the "Close Tags" quicktag to make sure everything is cleaned up before you post.

Not exactly, no. You can bookmark threads, if you'd like to keep them at the top of your screen -- should be an option in the sidebar when you're in thread.

I miss having the ability to reply to individual posts instead of just topics. I know this isn't the engine and it isn't here to be the engine but that was something i really enjoyed, it felt like we had little side conversations going on all the time. This board just feels aimless. Maybe it'll feel better after awhile. Aside from that, beautiful work.

The site is very pretty and simple, which is good.

The only thing I would point out is a CSS issue, for the '#Form.AddComments textarea, #Form.AddComments input, #Form.AddComments select' styles you set the background color but not the font color, so if someone, like me, has a light font on dark background in their system settings, they can't see the text in the comments box. Geeky I know, but hey.

Kudos on the system. It's very rad and clean and easy. Like walking into a store and not needing to look at those stupid hanging signs for "Canned Goods / Dog Food / Bananas" in the aisles.

The only tiny options I would suggest are: 1) A quicker jump to the reply box (for posts spanning more than 1 page), and 2) A quoted reply function, for replying to specific people/posts. Yeah, I know, I can just cut & paste, put something in the blockquote tag, etc., but it'd be nice to have a little quote button next to the permalink or something that automatically dropped their post into the reply box, formatted.

But this is no big deal and may, for one reason or another, go against the nice free-form feeling going on here so if I'm just being an ass then feel free to ignore. Merci.

Honestly, the main reason we haven't got either is because I'm really tired of forums where people jump right to the reply box without having read the other comments. In theory, the system we've got should cut down on people repeating each other...

it's such a clean app you nearly feel like the whitechapel graphic elements are out of place, a scar left from the engine days where the stark Wood design worked great with the hands-on feel of the board. On Vanilla (such a web 2.0 name you would not imagine hanging near anything ellis) , the graphics feel like running a hacked copy of leopard on an hp, it's difficult to put in words... it's like giving your cousin Henry Miller for his 21st birthday ?

Doesn't it, though? I dunno, I'm coming to almost like PHP. I'm pretty sure I've gone nuts, but oh well. It's working. (Pretty fine example of how Ajax can be used to smooth out the rough spots, too -- instead of just making annoyingly pointless swooshes and graphic elements.)

That does make sense -- it's almost easy to forget right now that we're bolted on to the side of the FREAKANGELS site. Once we're running adjunct to the comic I think the graphics will feel more in place overall.

finally worked out which code I was looking for as not terribly up on coding, I would suggest you alter the above statement to "look at bottom of your profile page and click on ( Subscribe to ian.mcrob's photos – Latest | geoFeed | KML ) or similar.

screechin, is your photo already online somewhere? If not, you'll want to upload it somewhere, perhaps to photobucket or flickr, someplace like that (or perhaps someone else here has other suggestions).

There is usually a handy way on those places to get the url of the photo, once you've got it uploaded. If not, you can usually right click on it, select "properties" from the drop down menu, and get the url from that. Should look something like this: http://www.yoursite.com/blah/yourpic.jpg.

Once you have that, you can paste it into the personal information section of your account profile (see Ariana's explanation at the start of this thread), or to put it into a post, use the "img" button at the top of the comment box where you type in your post.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Ah, that'll be your problem, screechin -- whatever url you're using for your pics will need to end in .jpg, .gif, .png, etc. You're trying to link out to a myspace album page -- Left click on the picture you'd like and "view image" to get the actual url to use.

Ariana, would it be possible to load up the markdown plugin for vanilla ? markdown is a text-to-HTML conversion tool for web writers by the great john gruber. to quote him :

Markdown is intended to be as easy-to-read and easy-to-write as is feasible.

A Markdown-formatted document should be publishable as-is, as plain text, without looking like it’s been marked up with tags or formatting instructions. While Markdown’s syntax has been influenced by several existing text-to-HTML filters — including Setext, atx, Textile, reStructuredText, Grutatext, and EtText — the single biggest source of inspiration for Markdown’s syntax is the format of plain text email.

To this end, Markdown’s syntax is comprised entirely of punctuation characters, which punctuation characters have been carefully chosen so as to look like what they mean. E.g., asterisks around a word actually look like *emphasis*. Markdown lists look like, well, lists. Even blockquotes look like quoted passages of text, assuming you’ve ever used email.

markdown is great because you don't interrupt your writing for formatting. Instead of throwing tags around a sentence to bold it (or select the sentence then click a box) you just write :

italic is _text in italic here_ and links are in brackets [text i want linked](link here) as well as images.

Tumblr added markdown for tumblr 3.0 and well, it's very addictive.

hyim, I think we're going to pass on Markdown. It's a great tool for individual writers, I agree, and I've used it in other projects -- but I've found it's less suitable for forums. There's always going to be the unsuspecting user that doesn't know why the underscores in his URL turned into a broken link with italics.

It's for conversations we want out of the way but have no reason to close. Sinking a thread sends it degrading down the timeline regardless of whether or not people are still posting to it. It should turn out to be a good way to clear out the top page from time to time.

I agree with this statement, though even with these more detailed instructions I can't find said code id. The worde 'subscribe' does not appear on my profile page. I have a free flickr account - is this a service not offered with free accounts? Or am I just really, really thick? Or both?

Joe, look at the very bottom of your Flickr photo page (not your profile, the page with all your pictures). Right above all the links for Activity, You, Explore, and Help, you should see a little orange square icon with "Subscribe to [yournames]'s photos – Latest | geoFeed | KML"

Click on the "Latest" link, and look up at the address bar on your browser. You'll see a mess of a URL -- Mine looks like this:

http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?id=35382826@N00&lang=en-us&format=rss_200

The part I've bolded there, between "id=" and "&lang" is what you want to cut and paste into your profile here.

Yes it is. Go to the search page and select "Advanced Search" (top right corner of the page). Do a search under Discussion comment search, and leave everything blank except "where the author was" (that'll be your username).

That search result page should have the RSS feed links in the sidebar, and should give you a feed with your comments as you post them.

Edit : I just realized how useful this can be. You can as was said earlier pump it into tumblr, or aggregate the posts of the sexy ones to read with your morning coffee. Or you could aggregate the names of considered troublemakers and trolls in an elaborate web 2.0 version of wiretaps, having thus a watchful and suspicious eye on possible whitechapel unrest, nipping it in the bud. Oh wait. O_o

You know, I ran my own forum under Vanilla (until I gave it a mercy killing), but it was so lightly used I never had to deal with this vast quantity of posts. But I think I've got my feel for it, now -- I read the 30 or whatever threads that are currently on the front page, and ignored the rest, figuring that anything people are talking about will float to the top and I'll catch upon them as they do. Perhaps most people do something similar.

Of course, that means some gems that got flushed off the front page may linger in obscurity, but oh well. Not sure what you'd do to avoid that.

Anyway, I like this format; it feels quick, direct, get in and get out. I have horrible troubles keeping up with web fora so maybe this'll work. Anyway, it's lovely to look at, very clean.

I read every thread when there were few enough that it was possible. Now I just make sure I read everything new. It works as long as I keep up every day or so.

We'll see if I manage to keep it up long-term. I've been pretty much living here lately though so maybe.

Hmm, been trying to work through Whitechapel using the RSS feeds rather than going in through the front door. A few notes

Clicking the links through to an unread comment takes you to a thread, but you can't add comments to it. I'm guessing it's the URL the RSS links to causing that.

It would be nice to have an RSS feed that just contains links to brand new threads rather than new comments. At least you can bookmark them if you don't have much time to browse through the whole site.

For me at least, viewing a forum through an RSS feed is a very removed experience. A bit like trying to see the heavens through the eye of a needle. Maybe I just need more practice but it doesn't have the sense of satisfaction when you can mark a thread as all read. In my head at least, an RSS feed isn't good enough for me to know I haven't missed anything interesting on the site yet.

I am having a hell of a time inserting images. I do it on tons of other forums with no problems but neither putting the URL in manually or using that awful IMG
button works? Is it because my comments are formatted as HTML?
I will try one with the img button
And now with the usual method that works everywhere else.

Neither worked but the one using the IMG tag stuck the discription word "helmet' on to the end.

Unsub, you're trying to use BBCode, which Vanilla doesn't understand, and you're inserting the entire when you're using the quicktag.

When you select the IMG button, all you need to paste is:

http://image.url.com

(Where image.url.com is where the image is.)

Don't put any other code like [img] or

 in the popup box.

Links work the same way -- just paste the linkin the popup, type what you want it to say, and then hit the "link" quicktag again.  I'll edit the last link of your post so that it works -- you can click the edit link at the top right corner of your post to see what things should look like.

FYI: You can't use putfile's code to link image, either -- they're giving you BBcode with a thumbnail.

Thanks Ariana I do rather like the look of the Vanilla interface and I do have it now. 
I was using the wrong tags and when I used the proper HTTP tags I got the picture of my helmet.

If your discussion post is "sunk", should we take that as constructive criticism?

Obviously its not personal.  But perhaps it should be taken as a sign that certain discussions are more interesting than others and if yours get sunk then you should use that as a guideline as to what to post. 

Or am I simply overanalyzing the whole thing! lol!

Little of column A, little of column B.  Honestly, SINK isn't a huge deal, it just means we wanted to move your discussion off the front page -- looks like your discussion was answered in pretty short order, and just didn't need the real estate anymore.

I admit it bugs me a little that SUNK threads don't hilite when they have new messages, as I've gotten caught up enough that I'm digging down several pages for new stuff currently, and that includes catching the SUNK stuff. Or is that simply not possible because really only the silliest of people would have more than one flickr site?

I tried just putting them both in the field but that breaks it.

It actually makes me a little sad that this isn't true, Henri. Generally, anything with "mush them together" and "frankensteinien output" is absolutely condition SUPERB.  Unfortunately, the way we're grabbing from flickr requires the user ID to plug in to a pre-coded bit of intermagic -- so a Pipes mashup isn't going to work.

Ariana, Yep, posting and reading and even the Market are all functional - it's just that front page thing.  It worked previously, but now seems to have stopped working for me.  I'll take a look at it with my Windows machine tomorrow.

What *appears* to happen is that if I try selecting the 'Remember me' radio button it just resets itself to a non-logged in refresh to the main page.

Not a terrible problem, just a shade annoying.

Not sure if this is the right place for bug reports - there's a bug in which people don't show up in the chat sidebar, but their comments in chat show up just fine - seems to be not specific to platform/browser. You don't need a flickr page to post photos here.  Your photos simply need to be located somewhere on the web (aside from Blogger and a couple of others that don't allow image crosslinking).

Ta.  I don't much like the wysiwyg editors-- we're using a tweaked version of the quicktags plugin, based off Alex King's Javascript of same.  The tinymce editor and the like tend to go a bit screwy on Safari, and don't play nice with some other plugins.  I'll pick simple and elegant over FUNCTIONAL* (*if you have exactly one browser running on a very specific OS) every time.

I have something of a different problem with the blogs.  I had a person hijack the comments of one of my posts because the content upset them, and informed that the same thing would happen again "every goddamn time" if I don't start measuring up to a certain standard.  I was sort of under the impression that we could post about anything we like.  are there, in fact, standards for blogs other than the normal Whitechapel rules?  I have no problem ignoring this person specifically, but I don't relish the thought of every single one of my future entries being swamped with irrelevant comments out of some kind of grudge.

Y'mean an RSS feed? Yes.  That'll be the RSS feed links on the side bar of the front page, post pages, and search pages.

If you look about halfway down this page, you'll see feed links for RSS and ATOM -- those'll give you new comments as they appear in this thread.  The link on the front page will give you comments as they appear for the whole forum.  

When you run a search (for a keyword or all posts in a category, for instance) you'll see there are RSS/Atom links on the results page of that, too.

I figured this would be the closest thing to a help thread. :)
I'm subscribed to the main RSS feed and I generally find it extremely convenient. Oftentimes though, especially recently, when I try to refresh my client (the Sage FF add-on) it won't return any data claiming instead, "XML Parse Error." 
This happened before, when I was using the FF live-bookmarks feature. I prefer browser-based feed readers but am afraid I might have to switch. 
Any thoughts? Thanks for taking the time.

Yeah, I'm still ironing out a few kinks in the feed, sometimes it doesn't parse as perfectly valid XML.  It's being worked on.  For the time being, you can toss the feed through feedburner and it'll strip out anything that's broken.

Sometimes when I'm signed in and I go to a thread I've been posting on, it will automatically jump to the last post before mine (or, occasionally, the last one I viewed--I think--if it's a thread I'm not posting on), whereas other times it will seemingly pick any ol' post to jump to. Am I insane? Is there some next-level thing here that I'm not aware of? Or should I just deal with it?

Also, for photo-intensive threads, is there any way to put placeholders in so when I'm scrolling down the page (because of this inexplicable auto jump) it doesn't keep pushing the bottom of the page down? If there isn't, which is understandable given the varying sizes and sources of all these images, whatever, I'll just deal. If there is, though, would it be hard to integrate?

You'll jump to the post immediately after the last one you viewed -- the first of the posts that are new to you (signed in).  What you're noticing on image-heavy threads is the images loading and making the page longer as you're scrolling (because the text and posts load first, then the images fill in after).

You're linking the flickr page, not the actual image.  The url of an image will end in jpg, gif, png, etc.  Right click on the image and select "copy image location" -- that's the url you use.

Regarding occasional errors:  This happens about a hundred times a day on every site you visit, you just usually don't see it because error codes redirect to a failwhale page, or are hidden so that they only show up in secret site logs.  I should really do the same, so that when things momentarily quirk, people just wouldn't notice and would refresh until it's all good again.  But it makes my life much easier to be able to see errors when they pop instead of constantly monitoring quiet logs, so you all get to be frightened villagers sometimes when arcane symbols appear in the sky over the castle.

Something's been bugging me for a while now and I'm finally going to post about it.  When I first showed up here, I remember that there were 50 posts to a page and I rather liked it that way.  Made reading a single page in a thread something long and epic.  Some time ago, it switched to 20 posts in a page.  That or I stopped deluding myself.  Is there any way to adjust this back to 50? Okay.  First off, is your photo on the web somewhere?  Make sure it's not stored on Blogger -- Blogger doesn't allow crossposts.

Then you check the Html button in your reply box, and then type



(provided it IS a jpg and not a gif or png)

And when you press post it should magically appear, provided the host isn't blocking it or you haven't set it to private)

Right click on the photo, which gives you several options. Click on the one that says copy image location. 

In the comments space, right above it, click the  img tab, which gives you a spot(window?) to enter that info - put it there.

Be sure to erase the extra http:// though.

If you want to use that as your avatar, you are going to have to shrink it - it's too big. Google 'resize photos' for plenty of sites to do this for you online, unless you have a program on your computer.

Haha, you're fine, Paul.  I think this was addressed in another thread, but the short answer is no.  

The long answer is yes we could, we could, but we've decided against it.  Vanilla isn't threaded for a reason -- and although replying to people is great and wanted -- we'd rather not disable some of the features that encourage members to read what other people are saying before they (repeat, skip, ignore) post their own comments.  You've also got to page through to the end of the thread before you can reply -- same thing.

That said:  Replying is awesome, and there are plenty of ways to do it.  If you're on the same page, an @ works fine.  If you're twenty pages in, every comment has a permalink you can reference (it's the little number on the top right of ever comment -- yours is 4.263, and if you right-click it, it's a link directly to the page and spot where you spoke.

The Dec Artists thread was closed because its not December anymore.  Those get a bit overwhelming (and tend to stagnate) if they go longer than a month.  As soon as one of the Whitechapel artists (probably Justin) finishes something that's not a R:R sub, they'll probably reopen a January one.

As for the musician threads, we've got several open right now...

So what we're going to do is this. Post the day's good (important, interesting, weird, funny) news stories in a single thread. Obviously, if something makes a good topic for Mad Science or Printheads or whatever, launch a thread there as normal. But if it's general news, or you like the story but you don't think it really warrants a thread... post it here. Big old river of news.
If someone wants to follow specialized news, they can add any of the hundreds of Neuroscience, IT, or Space newsblogs out there to their own feedreader.  The main reason Warren created NEWSKRUSHER is because we were getting a lot of one-post news threads opening -- people would post a story, but there was no conversation to it.  But Whitechapel's a forum, and most of the threads that are sticking at the top of the page should be discussions, not just aggregation.

That said: if some bit of neuroscience, IT, or space news looks like it's a good topic of conversation -- make a Mad Science thread for it as usual.

I'm really enjoying the system here.  I've been a Citadel-style BBS user for years, and always enjoyed the way the flow of conversation in non-threaded, flat discussion rooms worked, and this seems a lot closer to that to me than most.

Re: the Newskrusher thread - Kind of building on @odaelisabeth above, I could see a "Economy's in the Shitter NEWSKRUSHER", a "Bouncing the Rubble in the Middle East NEWSKRUSHER", etc. Opened and closed weekly or monthly or whatever, might help focus and deepen the conversations a little around the news.

When you hit the "quote" button, you get the html tag for a blockquote.  Then you can paste in the text you want to quote, and hit the button again to get a closing tag.  It should look a little like this in the input window:

It's possible that it loaded them in another window, or you accidentally opened the reader (but didn't actually read it), or it just hiccuped for a second and thought it'd loaded them, or any other thing. Hi Ariana,

I was just on the Saturday Night Open Mic thread and any time you visit the first page a little 'Authentication Required' pop-up appears with the following message

A user name and password are being requested by http://optichouse.com. The site says: "Password Protected Area"

and then has areas for you to fill in your user name and password and 'OK' and 'Cancel' buttons.

Every now and again we'll get someone linking an image (or, in this case, a profile pic) from a password-protected web directory.  It'll show up fine for them, because they're logged in -- but it pops up a log in warning for the rest of us, until I hit it very hard with a hammer and/or stick.

Hi Ariana,

Thanks for a site which is accessible to the software I have to use.  I am partially sighted with no central vision.  In order to read Freakangels, I use a program called Zoomtext Extra which combines powerful magnification and smoothing with a text - to - speech function.  The magnification allows me to read the novel and I use the speech engine to read this forum.  So many websites out there are simply unreadable but this one is a doozy!  Thanks very much.

Hi Roque, sorry that I've not been back to this forum for a month!  However, if your brother would like some information about access software I'd be glad to help.  The R.N.I.B. and Action For Blind People do offer assessments but they often recommend software that is easy to administrate on a network rather than be the best option for home p.c. users.  The main problem is that these programmes ain't cheap!  You can buy three laptops for the price of  a license for Supernova or Zoomtext Extra.

Post here if you need more advice.

 You're apparently just sticking a ".jpg" on the end of the url for the page where the pictures live.  (And, you know, you're not the first person to have done precisely that, so no worries.) But that won't work.

You need right-click on the image and select "view image" and use *that* web address.  ("Copy image location" will work too.)  When you get to the right url, it'll already have the ".jpg" part in the address.

Hm. I actually tried just grabbing the address from the main view of the picture first, but that didn't work, so yes, I tried sticking ".jpg" on the end of it. Heh. I thought I was being smart there.

Also, I'm using the mac at workOh, poor thing.  Look directly above the photo on the flickr page, there's a button with a little magnifying glass and "all sizes".  Click that, and it'll take you to a page with an image and, if you're logged in to flickr, below the image (scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page) "To link to this photo on other websites you can either:" and two options. Use the 2., just the image url.

Well, yes. I think that's what I'm doing (applying styles that work, because they also look good with my content). I'm not trying to save myself learning as much as I'm just trying to be aware of the the "being a jerk" threshold. No, there's just too much security risk allowing anything to be embedded in public forums (which is why you can't in most comment or forum systems out there).  Whitechapel autodetects and allows some things (mp3s, youtube, etc), but there's just no way to allow for everything.

Is there any way to edit posts from discussions that have been closed?  

I've been the target of internet stalkerdom.  Again.  (Not as weird as the guy who thought i was Terrifica at least, which is why I stopped having a journal/blog years ago).  A short while ago I'd removed my tumblr and facebook and privatized most of my Flickr, but the fiend seems to have found him/herself here ( i think ) and I'd like to maybe remove the personal bits that I probably shouldn't have ever exposed anyway.  Mostly just from the Open Mic Nights, where I'd a tendency to vent a bit too much.

If I delete my account, the posts will remain, right?  Is there a way to just eradicate all of my posts here in one fell swoop, or does that go against the rules?

EDITED to ADD:  if you want to tell me that i've done this to myself and I'll have to deal with it, you'd be totally correct, and I'd fully accept such judgement.

I don't believe there's a way to delete all your posts without completely destroying your account.  I'll take a look.

Yes, yes, yes...   I HAVE learned my lesson.  Really.  I swear.  *hangs head in shame*  

I really had pulled in the reigns on most of my online exposing of myself.  I allowed here to be the one place I did so, not thinking anyone would bother to look that hard, I suppose.  I like the people who post here, but I often forget that ANYONE can look.  You can nuke my account if you like.  Or not.

And yes, I had gone through and looked at all my old entries and edited a whole bunch of them.  You are right, it IS very cathartic!  It's just the closed discussions weren't editable, so I thought I'd ask if there was a way to do so that I was somehow missing.

I have a bit of a hard time reading some of the text here. I just need to know if I have set my browser up sideways or something...
With the white background, the main comments and headers are red or black and the purple is great. But, there is quiet a bit of information that is in grey on my end and I find it very hard to read without highlighting it. Don't get me wrong, I love the Vanilla format! I just was wondering if there is a way to tweak it so these eyes can function with more ease.

An example: the "Avatar" logo is very light but, I can see it. The text after the "poster's" name ("1 day ago" is after warrenellis on the post above me today) is barley legible. Again, I am not complaining, just need to know if I can change something here to help myself, well other than new glasses.

Thank you for this site Mr. Ellis, it is a joy and incredibly "fresh" in a world where comic books seem to be stuck in fear doing anything new other than becoming more and more fast and violent. You are the best I have ever read and I have been reading comics for almost 40 years. I am friends with many of the characters you have penned. Never stop building them like you do. I love how a day can take months in your books.

I do have some of the Lee/Kirby stuff I bought as a child (right off the rack for a quarter or less) but, I am not a collector, I don't believe they are meant to be locked away wrapped in plastic, to me they are represent the key to my imagination, and I still day day dream in Kirby, hence I have become TPB fan. I just still have a little boy in me that loves to escape to the world being saved by the good guys. In a world of confusion, the imagination can keep you sane.

I think it's supposed to be subtle. It's all non-essential meta-information, so it's not pushed out with the same visual force as the content or the links. (Try highlighting it if you really can't read it.)

We generally try to avoid the employment posts as their own threads because, like craigslist, for every one that's valid, there's gonna be twelve that are "looking for someone to give me lots of stuff for free and also sexxing and actually could you pay ME for the privilege of doing my work?"  But if you see some people in the artist thread you think would be a good fit for a paying gig, and you wanna drop them a comment/link and leave it to them to reply, I don't see any harm in that -- just keep the business talk offline and don't clutter the thread, ta.

Pardon.  Me again.  I'd previously posted about some personal find-ability concern?  

Well, if perhaps I could ask if just one post might be minimally altered?  I really have been careful these past few years, and I'd successfully avoided using my real full name here to avoid searchability - but there's one post not made by me that includes my full name (in title and content) and links to my account profile (regardless if I change the profile name), from which every post here is searchable.  

While I am eternally grateful for the sentiment and generosity (though really embarrassing), the "Laptop Fund" thread title and intial post would be the trail of breadcrumbs connecting my outside online self to here.  Maybe I could ask for just the removal of my middle and last name in that one post?

Hey Warren,

Not sure if you're aboot today but I need to ask: would it be alright to post something in London Zoo or Warren's Pub Table titled 'Zola Jesus ticket to Wednesday's gig in London in exchange for a pint'?

You see, my friend's just bailed on me and I know that all my other friends are either out of town, skint or simply haven't heard of the Zola. I'd rather give it to, and therefore meet up with, a Whitechappeler than try and flog it to a random or a tout.

SINK means the thread stays open but it doesn't bump up the page when posted to. I want to get a good look at the place this weekend, so I'm sinking a few threads to get them out of the way for a few days.

Altho I just finished a bottle of cask strength Balvinie I bought a couple of years ago for around $150 US, went to get a new one and the price was up to $750 - soooo got a limited run of a Compass Box scotch whiskey instead, we'll see how it works.

@Ariana for what it's worth the use of "system colors" is deprecated in CSS3 (and a fix is presumably to alter the site's CSS to specify a more explicit color but see also here).

@stsparky on OSX using e.g. Safari, I think you can use "System Preferences / Appearances / Highlight" to specify the background color of highlighted text. Unlike Windows it seems to let you control/alter the background color but not the foregound color: so whereas on Windows, text is black-on-white when not selected and white-on-dark-blue when selected, on the Mac it's e.g. black-on-white when not selected and black-on-light-blue when selected.

If you want to change it in the browser, you can do like Safari "Preferences / Advanced / Style sheet" and then pick a stylesheet (a CSS file) which you'd create yourself, which follows CSS syntax rules and which might contain for example ...

::selection { background:red !important; color:white !important; } 
::-moz-selection { background:red !important; color:white !important; }
::-webkit-selection { background:red !important; color:white !important; } 

... to override whatever stylesheet is specified on the site, or actually on every site.

But that's changing your browser's settings, rather than using your browser to change Whitechapel forum settings.

RSS feeds and searches:

Is it possible (or may be in the future) to search inside comments for file links or media content?  I notice you can get an RSS feed of a search, and in theory I'd like to roll a feed that only shows posts with linked or embedded content (MP3,FLV) and throw that at my media player.  If there's already a filetype search keyword or to search inside links, I've missed it.

I took a quick look through the Advanced Searching section of the docs, and playing around with variations on *.mp3 and the like so far are only turning up plaintext in posts, nothing in a URL tag.  Is there a special syntax for it?

ETA:  I think the signal ratio is just too high; too many people actually use MP3 in their posts as a word.   I did try searching on "href mp3" to force it to find a tag and got better results, but it doesn't look like it will accept a wildcard like "*.mp3" or a regexp.  Will keep at it, thanks for the help.
