Airborne Toxic Event has a sort of U2/Cure/smiths/Talking heads feel. Like an updated 80s sound that isnt a horrible abuse of the electronic augmentation in music that was so huge at the time. The keyboards and violin and etc have a very loose and lossy sound to them, but the drums are fucking air tight, so it all holds together really well. What really sells the whole thing to me are the lyrics. Theyre epic and more descriptive and uniquely accurate to abstract feelings than some of my favorite books.
When i first saw them, i thought the sound was kind of boring, but the more i think about it, thats probably because i was distracted by the live performance. They just really seem to love what they do (which is probably why they were fine with playing a mall for free), and the violin player is charming as hell. Even when shes just playing tambourine for a song or two, shes rocking out harder than anyone else on stage.
Little Side Note: I went and said HI to her after the thing in Dallas with The Fratellis. We chatted and i mentioned that i thought she totally stole the show, and she blushed. Fucking rock star blushed. Thats just too great.
Everyone to whom ive given the self titled has called me the moment it was finished and told me they were in love.
So yeah. There you are. Airborne Toxic Event. Go listen. Love them. Im really interested in hearing what you think. -

Ye gods. To a 21st century liberal, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" is a rather hair-raising song. An alternate title might be "Music for Righteous Ass-Kicking." -

i took a listen, its not really my thing, but its ok. not nearly as bad as i was worried about with my snobbery, hahaha. but:which is probably why they were fine with playing a mall for free
im not trying to talk shit here, but unless they have an arrangement that is completely unheard of, they most likely actually PAID money to play the show i was talking about. the labels do, anyway, and in most cases with bands that are recently signed, they HAVE to do stuff like that for the label. later, when the band makes a profit, they will owe that money back. i would assume that they are having a good time, they damn well better be as music has most likely become their full time job. but ill leave that there, as i would like to say that i have no issue with this band and dont want to come across as more of a dick then (probably) i already am.
my real reason for posting is that HOLY CRAP THE NEW GENGHIS TRON REMIX 12" features DRUMCORPS! so excited right now, i need to order this immediately. besides that, recent listening:
SHORT MUSIC FOR SHORT PEOPLE-101 song comp of mostly pop punk type stuff. only rule is that each band only has 30 seconds. i love the overload of cheery happy stuff-theres even one actual powerviolence band, which is such a strange juxtaposition that i love it.
THE NOW-blown out, shredded vocal east coast "supergroup" that only existed to record this. a middle ground between, say...CONVERGE and ORCHID? sure, sounds right to me.

MCR - Black Parade/Black Parade is Dead (live album). I switch between those two in the car. Album version is nice and clear, but then I love the live version because live albums sound way more liberating and pure.

Richard Pinhas & Merzbow - Keio Line
About what you'd expect, dense noisy washes and electronics from Merzbow, with Pinhas's 70's Fripp-styled guitar and loops slithering in and out. More interesting than anything I've heard either of them do individually in a while. Imagine living next to a busy factory/trainyard/freeway with someone across the street playing Frippertronic disc really loud. -

After going to a local concert and hearing <strong>Flobots</strong> live I picked up their cd and have been giving it a listen lately. Surprised to find out how political they were and how unique and interesting a Viola player performed in such a hip-hop band. Their only song that anyone ever hears or I've ever heard beforehand was "Handlebars" which is a really bad representation of their music as a whole. Anyway if you ever do have a chance to see them live I would recommend it. -

I've always imagined it's like something you'd hear just as they have their fowl uprising against mankind and our evil sauces. [hmm, i have the distinct feeling I've mentioned this before. if so, ignore this, but it is great!]

I heard on another forum that Jamie Ewing from Bent Outta Shape died last week which fucking sucks. Bent Outta Shape were one of the best punk bands of the last few years. I've been listening them for most of the weekend.

I'd be interested to get your take on Wolves In the Throne Room. They've done a few shows around these parts, apparently extricating themselves from their neolithic compound and rediscovering things like combustion engines and the like. Their music translates surprisingly well live. Saw them with Boris at that. Eardrums have yet to recover.
