You can't compare it to The Downward Spiral because (for my money) he reinvented the wheel with that album. To 90% of NIN fans that have been there since that era, nothing is ever going to compare to that album.

Interestingly - Hyperpower! seques perfectly into The Good Solider - I just noticed this by putting the album on random to test this theory.

I think the story of the album, at least how I interpreted it, was very well-told, as it's definitely a soundtrack. Zero-Sum is, essentially, the ending credits song. The movie? I guess you might call it The Human Race.

Now, I'm a fairly new NIN fan, so I don't have the rock-hard love for the Downward Spiral days, and this undoubtedly colors my perception of the album, as Year Zero is the only full album I have - I've got a smattering of songs from Downward Spiral, With Teeth, and the song on The Crow soundtrack.
