Year Zero just didn't do it musically for me, at least compared to the likes of The Downward Spiral and The Fragile. It sounds too much like an album put together by one guy on his laptop -- which it mostly is. And it's full of songs that seem to have a lot of potential but then don't go anywhere: The end of God Given sounds like it's starting to build to something awesome, like the breakdown at the end of Closer -- and then it abruptly ends. The end of the opening track, "Hyperpower!" breaks down into an awesome static crunch that could have segued into something cool, but instead it just ends and the next song starts with a generic drumbeat. (And really, if you're going to call a song "HYPERPOWER!", give us something more than "Pilgrimage Part II", please.) Zero-Sum takes would could be a great quiet closing track and fills it up with crunchy laptop percussion loops. And there are a bunch of songs, like "The Greater Good" and "Another Version of the Truth", which just go nowhere. There are some great moments: God Given, In This Twilight, and My Violent Heart in particular, but overall I found it a very unsatisfying album. And the vocal mix doesn't do any favours to Reznor's aging voice. Reznor has never been the best lyricist, but he used to be able to scream passionately enough that he could more than get away with it. And then there's the whole concept-album thing, which really didn't seem to amount to much. Or maybe it did, I had rather lost interest in the online marketing game by the time the album came out -- whatever happened with that?

But hey, your mileage may vary.

And It's not a terrible album by any means, it's just that he's shown in the past that he can do so much better. The Downward Spiral casts a hell of a shadow.

Fair enough. I was also dubious about his move from the more organic sounds of Downward Spiral and The Fragile, but once I started thinking of it as a different type of music, and made an effort not to compare all the time, the album really shone by itself I think. Personally, I'm glad he's not trying to 'recapture' his earlier work, since it's bound to fail.
I agree partially though, some of the depth and complexity of his music has been lost, and I'm really not a fan of his straight up 'rock' tracks like Beginning of the End. I'm not so sure about the vocals lacking though. They're different in mode, but just as sharply delivered, with a great sense of timing. Once again, if his voice isn't capable of reproducing the raw feel of earlier albums, I'm glad he's working with its current strengths and not trying and failing to do what it used to.

Year Zero feels like an extremely poppy album. The thing that makes it stand out in the sea of poppy albums that have consistently been released over the past few years, is that it's an interesting and original pop album.

You can't compare it to The Downward Spiral because (for my money) he reinvented the wheel with that album. To 90% of NIN fans that have been there since that era, nothing is ever going to compare to that album.

Personally, my favorite album is The Fragile. Yeah, I'm one of those guys.

(Fragile remains my fav album of all time).

I nabbed a Tapeworm torrent a few weeks back, it might still be up. there were a couple songs that were good, some i had heard years back, but alot of it sounded like crap.(imo).

I am glad Trent put up the multi tracks, something i wish more artists would do.

V is for Vagina - Great. See, I like how YZ feels more like the soundtrack to a living breathing world than an actual NiN album, particularly how a lot of the sounds come from other sources. "Beginning of the End" sounds like a spoof of a U2 song, "My Violent Heart" is for all the world a Public Enemy song, "Zero Sum" is a Gospel-tinged requiem, shit like that.

Musically, can it stand up to older NiN? Not to my mind. But as a big part of a larger story, it's fantastic.

The individual songs on Year Zero I thought were fantastic, but Turing has a point that it doesn't flow terribly well. Perhaps Reznor didn't worry about that, knowing most people would probably just stick it on their iPods anyway?

Interestingly - Hyperpower! seques perfectly into The Good Solider - I just noticed this by putting the album on random to test this theory.

I think the story of the album, at least how I interpreted it, was very well-told, as it's definitely a soundtrack. Zero-Sum is, essentially, the ending credits song. The movie? I guess you might call it The Human Race.

Now, I'm a fairly new NIN fan, so I don't have the rock-hard love for the Downward Spiral days, and this undoubtedly colors my perception of the album, as Year Zero is the only full album I have - I've got a smattering of songs from Downward Spiral, With Teeth, and the song on The Crow soundtrack. Oh, and I'm Afraid of Americans, the song he did with David Bowie, which jumps back and forth between awesome and hilarious so that I can't tell which one it ultimately is.

Year Zero is The Downward Spiral for the human race; rather than being about a single person's descent into dissolution, it's about the human race's end, going through all the stages, stripping everything away, until we're left naked, alone, facing the end with nothing but our regrets.

Wow. Now I'm depressed.

I'd be remiss if I didn't recommend the Year Zero websites, even though they've already been passed around like Lindsey Lohan at a coke party. Start here.

The whole website thing was too much for me, but a large majority of the album is brilliant. Trent sitting on a laptop making this album? Let's be honest, Nine Inch Nails IS Trent. The technology available now just means Trent doesn't have to hire musos until its touring time..

Speaking of NIN ex-musos, what ever happened to Richard Patrick? No one has mentioned the new Saul Williams, produced by Trent Reznor, yet: http://niggytardust.com/

Basically, the sales model is daring and shows Radiohead for the pussy-footing hypocrites they are: You can buy this album, ranging in audio quality from 192kpbs, 320kpbs or FLAC Lossless for $5. Or, you can get the entire thing for absolutely nothing at 192kpbs. Even that comes with a PDF inner leaflet and cover artwork. And it helps that, again because the In Rainbows comparisons are unavoidable, this album actually delivers energy and meaningful, soulful music. It's definitely worth a listen or a dozen.

I quite enjoy Year Zero, but it didn't offer much new. I definitely agree with turing concerning the songs being better in the potential. As much as I dig The Warning, I wanted it to get really crazy at the end, but instead it just... stops.

I did not like With_Teeth, even if it had two absolutely BRILLIANT songs: All The Love in the World and Beside You In Time.

The Downward Spiral and Broken are my two favourites, The Fragile not far behind either one. The Downward Spiral is certainly one of those Top Ten In The History Of Everything albums. I started listening to them shortly after Broken came out, a friend of mine let me borrow it and I began appreciating keyboards and programming. Unrelated ending to an incoherent paragraph.
