Loved the color this week. My LCS owner said he wasn't too keen on the art of the TPB, but I said "oh, wait. It gets significantly better." And every week, Paul proves me right. Vol. 2 can't come out fast enough. Also, loved the eyes in page 5. Haunting.

Content: I'm concerned that they knew exactly where they were firing. I smell a Mark. That, or Alice has a tracer. "What did I do?"

Paul's art is always lovely, but from time to time, it just fucking transcends into complete fucking awesome. (No, I didn't forget any words. I've declared 'awesome' a noun.)

Alice's reaction to the Freakangels sudden alertness is priceless. And the FreakField? Cool as hell. And oh, that last panel. Shit Is About To Go Down.

Also, yes, it is kind of conspicuous how they were able to target the FreakCave so specifically.

Week was pretty good. Three days of work, with little-to-no drama. All Special Ed classes this week, which... well, you know that old saying about policework? "Long periods of boredom interrupted by episodes of stark terror"? 90% of the time, teaching these classes are a cakewalk. Easy money. You're one of 2-3 teachers covering 8-10 pupils in all. Mostly, the other, real teachers supervise the program, I'm just there to lend a hand with whatever. But then, when there is a blow-up, it's fucking Hiroshima. Last week one of the kids flipped out, smashed two chairs and a window, and threatened several teachers. He's 13.

But yeah. This week, easy-peasy. And, it's another 2610 DKK, which is... let me just check a currency converter here... about £295/$440, this week alone. (Wow, btw, the Pound's taken a bit of a dive, huh? Hadn't noticed that.) Not bad for a total of 14.5 hours of work.

(Also, good thing I got paranoid and frantically copied the post when it took more than a second to... well, post. Would've been a bitch to write it all again.)

I registered today because I wanted to say that this episode rocked. Absolutely rocked. Both the writing and the art. If you told me that the Alice character was introduced for no reason other than to set up the payoff of this moment, I would probably believe you because it's just that good. It has everything - a demonstration of the Freakangel's power, their attitude, the central conflict between these characters and their society, and it leads into the rest of the story with a great cliffhanger.

I have felt that previous episodes have suffered somewhat from the arbitrary (and no doubt necessary, from Paul's POV) 6-page limit, but today's episode made that all worth while. Congratulations.

And sorry this is my first post rather than an intro, but I just had to chime in. I hope to post more in the future :)

First off- the look on Kirks face. Sheer suprise! It was so awesome I almost wanted to laugh. Almost. The ability to catch the utter and complete suprise- brillant. Supurb. Flooring.

And I had a hunch, then went back in the episodes and discovered I was correct. Luke was NOT in the freakcave, but he would have known that they were all going there. And the location. And he has this "itty bitty" grudge against all the others. By "itty bitty " I mean serious issues. Im suspisious.

How many angels does it take to make a freakfield? Can they protect themselves if it is only them? Or does it take two?

The art in this ep was amazingly gorgeous, Paul. Plus, I don't know much about comics, but the choices you guys made for panel size, content, etc -- the layout, I guess -- really added an extra dimension to the story this week.

I think Luke is a possibility, but I still think it's mostly Mark. If there's the Mark-Luke union, then I think we'll have serious issues. But I think Arkady would probably have something to say about Luke's douchebaggery, were he to join up with Mark.

God I love this comic. One little issue with this week's episode though. I'm no expert, but I have played quite a few video games and I'm pretty sure mortars don't trail smoke and fire. Newtonian Reflector, Refractor, and Cassegrain telescopes produce images that are flipped in various ways, upside down, upside down or horizonatally flipped(with a diagonal) or similar. But these are astronomical telescope plans and not used very much down here on terra firma, as Warren has indicated.

Of course in space, there is no puny 'right side up', so that matters less, but it does make positional adjustment a little tricky until you're used to it.

Generally, terrestrial telescopes and binoculars have two lenses and a relay lens or prism to avoid this.

An often underrated part of warm beverages in the morning is the warming of fingertips. If no coffee is available a freshly fired mortar also works.

That is an interesting development though, a mortar is hard enough to find in Portland even without an apocalypse having happened, I'd imagine doubly so in England. But damn! Talk about foreclosing on a property huh?

Great episode! Liked how the freakfield disturbed their clothes and hair.

As for theories about the attack, Luke or Mark make the most sense but I think it would be more interesting if their own flock was beginning to harbor suspicions and turn against them.

The art was gorgeous this issue, and as usual I can hardly wait for next week, but these attackers kind of suck, don't they? A mortar strike could have been dangerous but all the group's shield deflected was some (scary-large) shrapnel. Without powers they'd just have had to hide behind the big, metal bells to be safe. It was a potentially lethal attack that ended up being more scary than deadly. I think Mark's just rattling the rest of the Freakangels' cages right now more than anything else. I can't wait to find out what his long-term plan is.

Can't add much other then to echo the comments of other, excellent installment.
Looks Beautiful, reads wonderfully.....can't believe my day was so nuts yesterday I forgot to check it out till now (Sat Morning)

On another note, just read the trade...reads fantastic as a whole. Kudos to you Mr. Ellis for making this work 6 pages at a time and as whole... no way could I work my head around creating that pacing, let alone the story.

As a final aside, I don't recall asking my LCS to order the freakangels trade, but they insist I did (Not that I mind, I wanted it eventually) I suspect it went into the, "Peter will buy this if we order it" file...can't decide if they're friends or pushers.... :)

Finally got the FA TPB. It's a different feel, reading it in print, having the book up. It retains the feeling of something well produced and handcrafted. I rather like that- being able to tell the linework and coloring were done by a human, and I think that's a good thing.

Based on 34 he seem to be using basic eyesight later augmented by a telescope. He then used telepathy and the radio to warn the other Freakangels and the town.

One question I'd like to have answered is whether the "flaming morter shell" was a visible thing to the other people in the strip or more of a writer/artist affectation for the reading audience.

If it looked like a regular morter shell (blackish and near-invisible as it travelled) I'd say this was a serious attempt to kill some Freakangels at their hangout.

On the other hand, if the shell was that smoking flare-like thing shown in panel 2, it was probably more an attempt to injure-scare the other Freaks - and perhaps provoke them into a response that will get some of them killed for real.

It may also have been a combination of the two - an attempt to provoke the Freakangels and kill Alice. The only way Alice survived was because the 'angel had been given enough advance warning to be able to generate their "Freakfield." Without that warning the other's might've been able to protect themselves in the heat of the moment, but not been able to shield Alice. Perhaps Mark thinks that Alice is a threat to his plans since she survived ehr attack on the 'angels and has apparently been "adopted" by them.

@obliterati: I can think of two places within fifty miles of where I'm sitting where I could lay my hands on a mortar in the event of an apocalypse. This is the UK - we even signpost our secret military bunkers.

The thing that's bothering me is that, without a lot of training, you'll be lucky to hit the right county with your first bomb, let alone the right building. Either it's been telekinetically guided to the right point or it was a Precision Guided Mortar Munition and someone was painting the building with a laser pointer.

On the other hand the PGMM is only available for the US 120mm mortar and that thing (from the location and appearance) looks like a British 81mm mortar, so Mark/Luke/Arkardy(it's just possible)/M[s|r] X telekinetically guided the bomb. It also looks like Paul couldn't make the baseplate for the mortar look right so didn't bother drawing it

One shot? Why only one shot? You can easily get three bombs in the air before the first one impacts. Someone's trying to draw them out

(I'm not really a gun nut. I did the editing, additional material and some fact checking for a zombie RPG written by a US Army vet and I'm writing a comic set in the same universe. This is how I know this stuff)

I tend to agree with rickyp00h about there (possibly) being a trace on Alice and the attack is by Mark. I think Mark is due to appear soon, but then I can never really tell unless I'm Mr. Ellis...haha... The question is if he is trying to kill Alice, or all the Freakangels..? Things will get exciting if there's a trace on Alice too - imagine a major showdown between Kait and Connor over whether Alice is a spy or not and whether to kill her...and an eventual re-drawing of alliances among the Freakangels so they wouldn't be able to work as a team again...

Why does Kirk need to use a telephone though, can't he just use telepathy? Or is there a range to the telepathy? Did I miss something somewhere? >_<

I've just finished a memoir of a British Apache pilot in Afganistan and there's a great bit where the narrator gets chewed out by his supply sergeant for not firing off the one Hellfire on his chopper that was about to go out of date. (now it would have to be shipped back to the UK and the paperwork is, apparently, dreadful)

But I'm not going to spend the morning tracking down the shelf life of a 51mm mortar bomb. That's Warren's job, not mine

(Complete tangent, but Apache by Ed Macy is a cracking read with some interesting transhuman implications. The Apache is such a complex machine that it's right at the limit of what human beings can fly - it's to do with the amount of data that needs to be processed. Apache pilots can and have to be able to move their eyeballs independantly and can read two books simulatiously. These are skills/abilities that develop during training and (and this is the interesting bit), almost everyone drops out because they can't take the headaches. It would be interesting to do brainscan studies during training to see how the structure of their brain is changing (c.f. London cab drivers))

More range and a bigger payload than a mortar shell, even if the launcher does look like a mortar. But, yeah, what RichardFannon said. Loads of toys lying about for Mark's cannon-fodder army to play with.

I'm going to count Luke out. Not enough time, plus he's got a problem with Kirk and Ark, and we don't seem to know about the rest. Kirk and Arkady are all on their lonesome, with him at the top of a rickety tower and her down a bottle of vodka. Alice is right about those ropes though; Kirk could have seen it coming five minutes in advance and still had a nice long fall to look forward to.

But if they really do have more than one shot...our titular heroes better not walk out the front door.

He knows exactly where the Freakcave is. Why wouldn't he? He was a Freakangel, after all. The others probably should've moved the 'cave, but I can see why they wouldn't. I'd suggest a split between a wish to avoid drawing attention to some new hideout among the rest of Whitechapel, a stubborn refusal to be moved by Mark (who they figured they'd squish like a bug if he ever came around again) and simple twenty-something laziness and lack of foresight.

They do seem to be creatures of habit, for the most part. I mean, as much as you can be in a society such as theirs. The ones with specific jobs to do, anyway. Luke, Conner, Arkady, KK, and Sirkka all seem to have sort of... different... schedules. So it would make sense that Mark would know where and when they'd be getting together. I forget, is there any mention of this being a regular meeting time?

(eps 27 pg3 ^_^) On the other hand he did broadcast it with telepathy, and if Mark is in range (if the telepathy has a range - does it???) he would have an hour in advance notice.

The telepathy does have a range (I believe Connor mentioned KK needing to venture away a bit, so they don't have to know she likes sex). If Mark is in range, I'll bet Kait or Arkady would picked up on it.

I thinks its unlikely of a "tracer" on Alice. After all, the Angels did do a complete mind dump because they were worried about that same thing (a hidden command from Mark that not even she knows about)

I don't think Luke was personally behind the attacks- he could have just given some information to the right people. I think someone made mention of the attack being a smokescreen so a select group could slip in from behind. Or another group took advantage of the attack. A lot of people are out to get White Chapel and thier guardians.

Just my opinion.

Anyone want to share what you think Mark will look like? The typical doom and gloom bad guy or the dashingly dazzlingly handsome back stabber sort of bad guy? Or the worst sort of bad guy of all- the one that looks like everyone else and thinks they are doing what they are doing for the good of everyone else.

Maybe the attacker didn't know that anyone was in the Freakcave at the time - just that it was important to them and that they'd send a few folks out of their safe, secure fortress to find out who did it.

Well to be fair, we don't know anything about Mark really, and the things we do know about him, have been told to us by the Freakangles, who have a pretty shady past themselves. Besides that, I'm sure as bad and as powerful Mark is, he probably knows he can't take on all of the Freakangels by himself, so it makes sense that he might seek to hide his presence. If he's wearing tinfoil, he's not being humble, he's being smart.

I'm more than a little skeptical of the idea that the tinfoil hat is anything more than an affectation by Karl. It's seems highly unlikely that aluminum foil wrapped around one's noggin actually does block thoughts. It's more likely that Karl is simply shielding himself like Kait does.

Well, we've seen Conner telekinetically open the padlocked door to the Freakcave without even need to see it with his naked eyes. And this feat is presumably considered to be a fairly trivial exercise for the 'angels, on the level of us using a key unlock our own front door. I'd say it's not beyond the realm of possibility for a Freakangel to be able to guide in a morter. Now, whether he or she could do it from far enough away (or while shielded) to avoid being detected by other Freakangels is a lot more debatable. Remember that Sirkka was right on the verge of sensing Luke's mind control of his ex-girlfriend as noted by Arkady back in Episode 11. Although, since it seemed like it would have taken sustained activity for Sirkka to get a lock on Luke, I think it is possible for someone (Mark) to use short burst of Freakangel power without immediately being tracked by the others. Unless, perhaps they're already alret and looking for him.
