    Yeah i finally bit the bullet and bought land at Ft Stygian. They JY was too crowded and the fissure was .. vast?

    I want to be talked into Second Life, and so far, it just seems bizarre and alien.

    Hank- and take no offense, I'm seriously not trying to be an arsehole- what possessed you to invest money in Second Life? You do have to use real money for some items, from what I understand- what are you getting out of it? I'm honestly, completely curious.

    I guess that's a question for you too, Warren. (And this may be the wrong thread to ask in..)

    That makes sense, but.. what's compelling enough about it to write a column on it? Or is that one of those 'too vague' sort of questions?

    I get that it's a 'virtual world', or whatever, but it seems as if it would be tough to feel a sense of community. Is it more like an RPG community vibe, or are there simply a lot of cliques and (apparently) gov't. & charitable orgs all jockeying for space?

    I've tried reading articles about it, including yours sir, and quite frankly the jargon leaves me with the impression that there's a lot to learn (or study) to get a full picture before you can dismiss or fully appreciate it. Does that seem like a fair observation, or am I completely off base here?

    Did you just leap into it, or did you get a grasp on it first? *Can* you get a grasp on it first?

    I did it because for the most part it fills my sandbox yen and lets me wander around in interest (and sometimes horror) at what folks make when they have few rules. That said, I am in Stygian because it is less likely to fall under the control of less savory folks or advertising geeks.

    I just got SL. I've hardly got a handle on things, but the sand-blasted corner of the world does look interesting (makes me miss the badlands IRL), at least from what I've seen. I don't have any land and I'm still setting myself up, but eh. Taking things slowly- there's a lot on my plate at the moment.

    Z, I don't know about anybody else, but I'm not the slightest bit interested in community. for me, SL is a costume party. I like walking around dressed up as somebody else, dancing, freaking people out with bizarre effects, engaging in perverse little flirtations and trysts, and then-- poink!-- turning it all off and going back to my real life, without any strings attached and without so much as having to walk home in the cold afterwards.

    I spent $20 of real money on SL once, so that I could trick out my avatar in the nicest skins, clothes, etc. that were available-- as a change from the usual cheapie stuff I use. the expensive-looking stuff really did look better, thus improving my gaming experience, I suppose. for someone with a longtime Playstation addiction, $20 didn't seem like a huge outlay, so I may do it again sometime.

    Thanks :) Things aren't quite settled yet - there are a few areas where i'd like to develop things a bit further whether in content or backstory.

    As for what SL is 'about', it's what you want it to be, as long as you're willing to invest a little time and effort in to it. Some people buy, some people create and sell, most people do a combination of both, some people are there just to dress up, some people are there to socialize.

    There are definitely a lot of possibilities out there - but that doesn't mean one has to experience them all. It doesn't mean one should, or *can*. After a year and a half of SL, I've seen what I first encountered grow exponentially. I don't think I've seen all the gems of SL and I'm not sure I can or ever will.

    This is where the various columns and blogs come in. Warren's Reuters column highlights his unique point of view. If you enjoy the fashion scene, there are numerous fashion blogs. If you enjoy music, there are music groups you can hook up with that have corresponding meeting places and performances in world. Looking for something more general, but still cool? Follow an SL news blog like Reuters or Massively, or maybe pick up a copy of the Metaverse Messenger.

    Yes to all of the above.

    I don't think anyone can ever fully 'get' SL, but it's highly possible for one to connect with others who have similar interests in-world. Whether these interests are best served in SL is debatable, but it is often useful to think of SL as a facilitator of interaction with others as well as a facilitator of creative 3D content.

    Im working in the Hole at the test site most evenings (from about 8 till 10 EST) unless we get a "You have to see this" from someone. (last night a bunch of us wound up at Clock Island at W's insistence that we see it. It was worth the trip) I will have to swing by from time to time and see what changes in there.
