The Authority/Planetary and it blew my freakin mind! It was not even his best work but the art was quite good and it was a great intro to both.
I had heard of Transmet and actually went and sought out his stuff. I even found a few Xmen that he had done that I already owned and thought were excellent but never noticed the author.
Before that the only author I was into was Ennis. It is interesting that even though they have completely different styles a lot of people love both of them.
I do have a hunch there would be more fellow gun nuts on the Ennis forum(is their and Ennis forum?).

I started getting the Authority and I got lucky ,because I live way in the boonies in northern Saskatchewan my local comic shop had the first 4 issues of the authority brand new sealed in plastic at half the cover price! He sold 30 copies of the KISS comic though. I have tried to get everything Warren's put out since then. I also get all of Garths stuff although I missed a few Avatar but I now have almost everything I missed ordered on TPB. I try to get all of Brubakers but my god the guys almost as prolific as Bendis.

I have also hunted down a lot of Warrens work that he did before I clued in on TPB. I have most of the Transmet and the rest on computer. As a gonzo Hunter fan and a lover of quality mind expanding chemicals plus a news and politics fanatic it was almost like it was written for me personally. I also got that feeling from .303 by Ennis.

I can't wait to read Crooked little vein.

My first encounter with Warren's work is something of a tale...

I had traveled five thousand kilometers, and across an international border, with a friend of mine to visit his internet girlfriend. I had no details about this trip, and was being brought along (and paid for) simply because I had experience traveling and the friend had none. When we arrived, I realized that we were in a mountain-bound town of 20,000 in Washington State. The only notable elements of the town were that it was home to both a state and federal penitentiary. And, I was belatedly informed, the girl we were to be visiting was 16, whereas my friend was 21.

Needless to say, thing went sour, and fast.

Three days later, alone and after having hitch-hiked to Seattle and caught a bus to the proper side of the border, I somehow managed to find a distant relative of mine who lived in Vancouver. He is seven-foot-one, and lives in a basement apartment with six-foot ceilings. I had arrived just in time for his birthday, so he, myself, and several of his friends got roaringly drunk and discussed, among other things, fetish body-modification and zombies.

After everyone else had gone home, I pulled out Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I had already finished it, but had nothing else to do and no inclination for bed, so I was going to re-read it. My giant host took one look at me, and handed me the first three TPB of Transmetropolitan, then promptly passed out on the kitchen floor with a half-eaten ham on his chest.

This is how I first encountered Warren. If you've read this, sir, thank you. Nothing could have complimented that experience better than Spider.

I got into Warren pretty recently, but mmmmmmmmmm.... Planetary and Transmetropolitan are still on my to-do.... I feel old.

I believe my first experience with Warrens work is when he took over Hellstorm at Marvel in the early/mid 90s. I had bought the book since #1 as I liked the character from the old Defenders I picked up from the back issue bins. The new Hellstorm was quite different, but I stuck around. I particularly enjoyed a story about a faith healer unknowingly taking souls from hell and putting them into comatose bodies, "healing" them.

Warren took over after that. The book was a lot more gory, something about a serial killer wrapping himself with the guts of his victims as armor IIRC. It grossed me out and I wasn't entertained. There was a lot more Santana, whom I never really cared for. I dropped the book.

I would later pick up DV8 #1 which had his name in the credits. I didn't like it either. The characters had a very smug, better than you attitude which was off putting.

I think my next exposure was Doom 2009, where Warren did a Doom takes over the USA story. I bought some of that but never stuck around. I had bought some of the early Doom 2009 and just found the character didn't ring "true" to the Doom I read in modern Marvel. I still had that feeling with Ellis' take on it, which is why I dropped it.

I did borrow and read a TPB of Transmet which wasn't bad but didn't really inspire me to buy the series. It's still something I need to get at some point. I've got the first TPB, just need to get the rest eventually.

I did like the early Planetary and Authority Trades and some stuff after that.

I remember being so incredibly disappointed when Satana never came out. Then, I guess, four years later, I came back to that idea, reread it and understood just how amazing it was. I went online and found out what else he was writing. Then I went to the comic store and started up my Planetary, Authority, and Transmet collections, very near the beginnings of those runs (well, P & A, anyway). And that started my collections of the trades, since I never could find the first couple of Authority or Planetary (not being an e-bayer yet). And now I don't buy anything but trades. He's had quite the influence on the way I buy and perceive comics.

Then in 2006, I got back into comics (having quit collecting floppies back in the early 90's) when The Boys was first starting up. Since that book was getting me back into comic shops, I decided to start reading others, which is when I ending up getting newuniversal (I knew Ellis by name and I didn't need prior knowledge to get into the series). Soon after that, I started buying more TPBs (throughout the 90's and double-0's I would occasionally get an Alan Moore or Frank Miller trade) and ended up getting the Desolation Jones and Down trades. Now, I'm averaging eight to ten floppies per week (that's just new books, not back-issues, which I periodically horde). Funny, since the book that got me back into comics has been a fairly large disappointment to me, though I'll give Garth credit, this current "Glorious Five Year Plan" arc is infinitely better than the "Get Some" (Batman/Nightwing analogue) arc.
