I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character. Photography and digital art is also fine, before anyone asks.

The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.



This week: Captain Justice. Jess Nevins has the gen:


"Captain Justice was created by Murray Roberts and appeared in Modern Boy and Boys Friend Library beginning with "Captain Justice--Modern Pirate" in the November 1930 issue of Modern Boy. Justice sounds interesting; I wish some of his stories were easily available to read. Jack Adrian described him as "a cross between Cutcliffe Hyne's Captain Kettle and Sidney Drew's Ferrers Lord," and, indeed, his is quite visibly similar to Captain Kettle, enough so that one would be forgiven for suspecting a familial relation."

This is the only image I could find of Captain Justice.




I could find none at all of Captain Kettle, his supposed lookylikey. But listen:


"Captain Justice is the "Sea Rover," a "modern pirate," as mentioned, an "adventurer of the highest order" whose home base, a technological wonder (it had two-way television in it), was a mile-high fortress, Titanic Tower, floating somewhere in the Atlantic. He used an invisible airship to take him and his friends, Midge the red-headed boy assistant (think Sexton Blake's Tinker and Nelson Lee's Nipper) and Professor Flaznagel, around the world, from hidden cities to the depths of the Sahara, and to fight evil and wrong-doers wherever he found them. This often entailed, for example, confronting evil Sheiks who used armies of giant spiders, or going to Lost Worlds and fighting "hordes of prehistoric monsters," or saving the Earth from alien invasions, or stopping renegade Americans and evil Sheikhs from conquering the world. There were drowned worlds coming to the surface, and technologically advanced Lost World natives in the Amazon threatening to invade the outer world, and Cap took them on. There were the evil androids of "Robot City," and the ill-inclined inhabitants of a Lost World in India, and even the "Weed Men" from the Sargasso Sea, and Cap took them on, too. There were boy Rajahs from places like Bhuristan, who of course needed restoring to their rightful thrones, stolen from them by evil viziers, and Cap helped them. There were monster robots on South Seas islands and lost civilizations beyond the Arctic ice and dinosaurs in volcano-heated lands beyond the Antarctic ice...

(Now I'm editing:) "....metal cubes with unnatural powers, "priceless electric ore." There were cannibals and pygmies in unexplored Africa... Marcus the Mysterious, who planned on becoming the "Emperor of Earth" fish-humanoids... the unwelcome attentions of the inhabitants of the planet Nuvius, who brought not only themselves but their entire planet to attack Earth. There was the Black Napoleon of Science City, out to conquer the world..." Screw it, I'd be here all day. This is mad stuff.

What we're looking at here is essentially Doktor Popeye from the 25th Century.

Go insane. It's what Captain Justice would have wanted.

Here's the entire Justice Crew: (L to R): Mi-Ju with her hover-pods, POL-E, Capt. Justice, Professor Darius Flaznagel.
Modified "J" symbol to show Justice's fascination with the mighty octopus, also reflected in the design of his overjacket. In the international waters of this new world, Justice and Flaznagel realized their dream of adopting, and young Mi-Ju became an indispensable member of "The 8 Arms of Justice".

Tangentially inspired by the MASTER AND COMMANDER series of books by Patrick O'Brian (which I've not read, but have heard nearly the entire series blasted from my wife's studio on audio books for the last year!), and the special/slash-worthy relationship of Captain Aubrey and Stephen Maturin. Eh, I figured let Justice find love as well as adventure on the high seas. Their relationship also clears the way for putting a 13-year-old girl with two older men.

EDIT: Here's my Octopus J logo. I was pretty happy with the mark, and thought I'd dump an image up here, suitable for tattooing.

I forgot that I was ripping off Fallout with the wrist computer, but it seems very evident now. The idea behind the gun is that you plug it into the wrist computer, calibrate and set it, then feed that into the goggle for accuracy and aiming information. The gun itself is outfitted with a five-lense camera that will photograph and recognize potential targets in the area, and the computer would then organize the information to feed into the goggles. I'm sure you could play Tetris on it, too.

He was going to have a big belt with different hand attachments, but it looked too cluttery, and I wanted to keep him at least a small semblance of simplicity on his person.

I imagine the tanks are oxygen, but to explain why is to break the rules!

I really like the idea of a hot used battery mortar function. :P

MangaStudio has THE best digital inking tools I've ever used, and with a big Wacom, it's nearly the same as inking by hand with a brush or pen. It's like PhotoShop geared specifically for comic making, and it kicks ass. Only makes black and white comics, but it's built for panels/pages/inking/sketching/pencilling. I sketch and ink in MangaStudio, then port it over to Photoshop for colors.

I also recommend getting the rubber pen nibs that Wacom makes, as it make the pen drag more naturally, which I found I missed with the standard stylus' hard plastic nib.
And yes, I am a colossal nerd about this, but it works so well, I gotta nerd out.

More interesting is the notion that most of these reinterpretations (including mine) are in a humorous bent. Which begs the question: is there a way to do a "Doktor Popeye" in a more serious vein?

Tough guys these days tend to be evoked by Johnny Bravo-style characters. Tek Jansen, Brock Samson, even Dwight from Sin City (he was a semi-serious lead in his story, but once he bacame a sidekick in "A Dame to Kill For," he became comic relief). I suppose crafting such a character as a lead in a serious story makes the bully/fascist tendencies more obvious, but from a storytelling perspective, I'm curious, if there's a way to write such a character in a non-comic way.

With a little research, I discovered Murray Roberts, aka Robert Murray, aka Robert Murray Graydon, son of Willliam Murray Graydon also wrote some later adventures of Sexton Blake following on from his father; and as Robert Murray, wrote a short story called Hobo Fighter.
