    And if you happen to live in the Dallas area, keep an eye out for <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2008/jan/04/north-dallas-apparently-stolen-christmas-present/">this dog</a>, possibly
    accompanied by a young girl and/or her dad.

    It wouldn't be worthy of notice, except that it really is a shitty way to start the New Year. Take a long look at your own pet and tell me you wouldn't post this story if it happened to you.

    Imagine that bullshit. You spend Xmas without your beloved little lap warmer (the<em> other </em>lap warmer, you bastard), despair over him for a week, then start the year off with a Dear Jon letter and a $20 bill, like you're some cheap whore. That's criminal. And upsetting the man's six-months pregnant wife? Who needs that shit?

    That's kinda sick. Oh, we found your dog, but we kept him and CHANGED HIS NAME. Really hope this has a happy ending.

    And then... <em>then</em>, this pathetic addict tells the guy she gave it to her estranged little daughter as a gift, and had to resort to theft because she's poor.

    If that kid is being raised right by her dad (he must have retained custody for some reason..?), then that kid's going to feel like shit whenever the truth comes out about the dog's origins. The truth will have to surface eventually, <em>especially</em> if the woman really is seeking help. Identifying one's misdeeds and making amends is one of the steps, and it's an important one.

    Hopefully this woman has a sponsor and will move on that step soon, before she hurts anyone else.

    it's still getting a lot of play here in Dallas

    the family has offered to buy whoever took the dog a new one if they'll return scooter but currently he's still missing

    This happened at the hostel I lived at in Portland before I got there -- someone left a voicemail saying "I found your cat. And I'm keeping him. He's going to be an indoor kitty now."

    Hilarity ensued.

    The voicemail had recorded the woman's phone number, so the hostel guests would call her house several times a day and leave voice messages saying how much they missed the cat, and when was he coming back? The night manager who owned the cat went to the police, who ended up telling him that stealing cats isn't a crime in Portland. He went to a librarian, who did some research and said, no, stealing cats isn't a crime in Portland because old Portland laws say cats aren't property -- dogs are property, and women are property, but not cats.

    The night manager ended up hiring a private detective, who determined the lady's address based on her phone number, and the night manager ended up going over to her house and waiting outside until she got home from work. And she gave him his cat back. The cat used to be pretty wild -- every Friday night, they'd get a call from a bar 10 blocks away, saying the cat had come in the door again -- but after that, he never went very far away from home.
