There was, way back in the mists of... 2007... a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as... people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response in various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving. I think most people's favourite was the dear late Mike Wieringo's wondrous retro-aristo Buck Rogers...

I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character.

Photography and digital art is also fine, before anyone asks.

The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.

This week's is a tough one, in a lot of ways, I think: DOMINO LADY.

This blandest of pulp heroines has been remade/remodeled at various times in the past, with little success. This is her description:

The Domino Lady is really University of California, Berkeley-educated socialite Ellen Patrick. When her father, District Attorney Owen Patrick, is murdered she puts on a domino mask and a backless white dress to avenge him.

She steals from her targets, donating most of the profits to charity after deducting her cut, and leaves a calling card with the words "Compliments of the Domino Lady".

A Berkeley girl who dresses in a party gown and an eyemask (and is usually pictured with a gun) who robs from the criminals and gives to the poor -- but takes a cut for herself.

In “The Domino Lady Doubles Back” there is more plot development. The Domino Lady sends a warning to a crooked businessman that if he fails to donate to charity, she will rob him.

Big whoop.

So how do you reconfigure a character like that for the 21st Century and make that character something you'd want to read? You can't just -- as some have done -- make her dress into a stripper's outfit and give her unfeasibly huge tits.

There's something else going on there. A Berkeley girl with a gun? How many guns? You know who else rips off criminals? No, not Robin Hood. Omar from THE WIRE. Also, she's not called BACKLESS DRESS GIRL. She's called DOMINO LADY. It's all about the domino eyemask.

This will test you. Reinvent her as someone worth paying attention to.

Here is my offering, I went back to my Magical girl roots and gave her an appropriate talking animal sidekick. Ordinary, clumsy, (aren't they all?) coed Ellen by day, she puts on her Domino Mask and at night becomes Lady Domino! with her lovable talking raccoon (who lives behind her dorm). She fights against evil and gives to the poor.

I do try to maintain standers of ridiculous.

I decided to throw out the whole debutante angle, and replace it with an increased Berkeley influence. Hippie/pirate punk/Robin Hood, grew up poor, going to Berkeley on scholarships and loans, and now from what she's stealing from the rich. (Sorry if that's too far into breaking the rule, thought it would make more sense if it was explained better.)

My favorite part is the Phil & Friends shirt. I used to play music with Phil's nephew, so I got to go to the daytime show at the Greek (on UCB campus) last year, and it was very awesome.

Despite loving the entrees so far, I am a little surprised that the city's rep hasn't come through more on here. Living in the Bay Area, though, I suppose the influence is stronger.

Looking up "domino" on Wikipedia led me to its origins as "domini"; black and white masquerade-type masks from old-timey Venetian Carnivals, which I thought was more interesting and mysterious than a traditional domino mask. I left everything else the same because I didn't figure Domino Lady to be needing to jump around rooftops, etc.

Excuse my elaboration, but I figure that she robs from the rich and then only APPEARS to give to the poor... She's really planning a massively elaborate revenge plot against the conspirators who murdered her father, and her "donations" are all one more domino in her chain reaction of retribution. Also, I feel like the full face mask allows for Domino Lady to be anybody underneath... like not necessarily whassername, the district attourney's daughter. (Sorry for adding that story bit, but I have been thinking about it all day.)

Thanks for the compliments! I have another one that I just finished, which I may scan and post as well (I didn't want to crowd it up). She's wearing a leather jacket and Wayfarer-style sunglasses with domino dots on them, a decidedly more homemade look than the crazy dress and mask.

Comic book and movie characters: Cuffing something sought-after to your hand means that it will get cut off, because ripping the handle off the case is boring.

Thanks, hopefully the main idea I have rattling around in my head is worth seeing. This was more of a period piece/deco work out. It's not that much removed from her actual look. I just had an hour (waiting on a decision-impaired client) and did this to get the idea out of my head, so I could move on to something more conceptually interesting later.
(if I'm really truthful, I wanted to get this piece up in case my other idea craps out... Then I can say "This is what I meant to do all along!" )

The young socialite died the night her father was murdered. Only the Domino Lady remains, baring her mask of self inflicted scars as penance for her perceived faliure to protect daddy. The combat trousers and boots are practical additions to the torn party dress that she'll never take off again. I figure she doesn't care much about who gets the money she rips off from criminals - it's all about how much pain she can inflict before she too is taken out.

Mine was penciled and inked in Manga Studio (same as the last one) and colored in Photoshop. Start to finish, probably an hour, to an hour and a half (time isn't so much of a factor when you draw in a minimalist cartoony style!).

Is BryantPaul a professional artist, because that work (and the Cap J one) is AMAZING!!! I feel like I should be watching a cartoon that looks like that.

Also, I like the mask of scars. I almost went a similar way where she would carve a new domino mask out of the face (around the person's eyes) of each of her new victims...

As for my drawing process, I do it all on a Wacom tablet in the program Corel Paint Shop Pro X. Doing pencils that way is quite a bit more liberating, but inking sometimes feels sloppy and hard to control. I feel it's like the old (Rick Veitch's) Rare Bit Fiends line (about Dave Sim), "He's inking like Bissette..." That might be a bit of pretty obscure reference, but I feel like the Wacom makes me ink more like Steve Bissette or Frank Miller, which is interesting, but it is not necessarily as tight as my previous pen/paper inking style.

Related to this whole Remake/Remodel process, I've been dreaming up other characters to fix on my own. I was thinking up what to do with detective Sam Spade.

Also, I, too, am curious about whether or not these characters are public domain (and can therefore be used in any new comic I would want to make...), except for the fact that if you don't own the character, can you make any cash on the movie rights? Doubtful. I don't want to seem cynical, but I'd rather OWN a character called Captain Kustice and make a buck than not own a character called Captain Justice and be left sitting with my artistic pride and no movie deal...

Hand drawing on Wacom tablet in PhotoShop, traced in Freehand into vector form, vector forms exported to PhotoShop as flat color, shading added in PhotoShop, layered with background elements, colors tweaked and flattened. 1 Hour, start to finish, which isn't me bragging. Like anything, if it's something you do a lot, you tend to get pretty quick at it. Which when I'm billing hours as a designer and illustrator is a good thing. Hope that explains "The Sizer Process"...

As I understand it, when intellectual property enters the public domain, the original elements as at the point the mateiral went PD is open to all. But any reworking or additions is covered by copyright.

So, Robin Hood is a public domain character but the current BBC series is still covered by copyright - and the logo is probably a trademark.

Edited to add: I think there are people here who have a much better understanding of IP law than I do. If people want to discuss this further I'd suggest starting a new thread so they're more likely to see it.i

I figured if she was going to attend fancy parties, then she'd want to make her dress utiliatarian, and the break off bottom part of the dress could be used to hide her loot, or possibly even as a parachute kind of object. Her heels would detach to make her shoes easier for sneaking and running - in case of emergency. And The mask is to, well, hide her identity - and along with the cleavage ought to keep her from being found out.

I also figured instead of leaving some not, with a signature, she could just leave the six/blank domino as her calling card.

Anyway, some great other concepts here.

Anyway, Trigger25's is really nice, like some of the pre-vis art that Pixar does. And Paul Sizer: your process is crazy to be so quick, but yes, I can see how doing it over and over would shave some seconds off your track time.

Leandro's is nice, and as a suggestion, what if the gun isn't really a working model, but can be taken apart and turned into something else... or is just a lighter which we wouldn't see until after she'd been waving it around at a room full of people.

Johnmuth: I also toyed around with a Rorshach-esque mask, but I think that my fav part about yours is that she just whips her dress off and voila- instant vigilante outfit. Although true California socialites don't wear panties...

I missed out on Captain Justice last week, so I'm sneakin this in before bed. Looks like curb also beat me to the concept of makin her wear the dress with her father's blood on it as a sort of battle flag or personal icon.
Felt more inspired by John Robb's blog than pulp comics, and since any vigilante today would likely be labeled a terrorist, I decided to embrace that aspect of it. I tried a reversal of Batman, seeing as he stands for law and order and targets individual criminals, I pictured her targeting institutionalized corruption and criminal corporations and in effect leaving chaos in her wake. The 'D' logo fits with that quite nicely.
Armed with a Kalashnikov, modern body armor, laptop for cyberwarfare and fashionable boots.

Hi there; first time poster here from the merry old land of Oz. Heh, I got put on to the place by a friend who says I should harness my creativity more- whatever that means. :P

I wish I could say this is original, but there are already those there who've put up the hacking thing. I thought, well, 21st Century, why not have a miniature wormhole generator that looks suspiciously like a domino? But I digress. I put this together more for the cyberpunky entertainment value of it than anything else; enjoy. I hope. Comments, criticisms and anything else you can put out will be well recieved. :)

Both, I think, are better options then a simple .22 hide on thigh gun holster.

Miranda, your take is both imaginative and beautifully executed, making it a very hard act to have to follow.

Here’s a dual nationality, mixed race socialite with a re-purposed exoskeleton prototype that she developed herself at Berkeley. She dons a titanium blonde wig and yamanba make-up to mock the Anglo Saxon prejudices of the wealthy conspirators who murdered her father.

Japan’s modern yamamba fashion tribes are named after an ancient female demon ( oni ) and four two ( shi ni ) conjures thoughts of shinigami, equally demonic death dealers. A fitting calling card for a lady on a larcenous quest for vengeance.

DisContent: I like a lot of your design; mostly the wordplay, etc. But I feel like that exo-skeleton needs a little bit more... you know... SKELETON! It doesn't seem like it would be very effective if it were just barely covering her up, although I suppose reality isn't necessarily required here.

And what I love about Alberto's topless version is that every time Domino Lady exposed her breasts, she should have a different number of nipples, between 1 and 6... And pubic hair dots to match.

After the murder of her DA father, Ellen Patrick-Nakamura saw the impotency of the legal system in Japan and became obsessed with taking down salarymen who facilitated "compensated dating" and the burgeoning "burasera (bloomer sellers)" market. Posing as an dance club/enjo girl and communicating via schoolgirl prostitution cel phone codes, Ellen lures and confronts pedophiles to her and deals them the greatest blows: financial disgrace and public humiliation. After covering her expenses, she donates the balance of the money she takes to various child endangerment protection services under the alias "Domino Lady".

My first time entering this shindig. I fiddled around in a sketchbook with the other two characters but never posted anything.

I had a lot of ideas for her, and this was my first concept. It's pretty weak.. essentially I just gave her a bigger gun. And I really rushed the coloring, I'm watching SLings and Arrows and get easily distracted heh.

But I plan on pursuing some other ideas before tomorrow, if I get a chance. Thank you for putting this together, it's fun and helps me get out of my three-job-work-exhaustion-art slump. ^_^

And Paul, pleeeeease keep showing your process, it's quite fascinating for we who do not have access/capability with computer coloring tools. (English Education degree from an art-centric college...what was I thinking?!)

Okay, my turn. My interpretation is actually based on hasty reading. I saw Berkeley, and immediately started thinking, "professor." A women's studies prof at Berkeley (THE Domino Lady, for our purposes) develops "Domino Lady" as a branding tool of sorts. It's a highly specific college feminist group of would-be crimestoppers, thieves, and assorted sociopaths for a strange project - The Domino Ladies - the ultimate goal known only to her:

My interpetation was a modernization and origin change--Ellen Patrick is still a Berkeley grad who's the daughter of an influencial philanthropist--but in this version, when she finds out her father is allow the military to test their newest weapons in her city, she steals some of their tech, and becomes the Domino Lady--a masked adventurer who uses the suit to enhance her strength, agility, and aim to kick the Military/Industrial Complex square in the ass.

It's probably not as techy as I was envisioning in my mind, and I'll probably turn back to her soon.

What do you guys think?

I did my first one earlier in the week, so it seems like forever waiting for Monday and the new character... Anyway, to bide my time, here is a shitty drawing of another variation of DL, although she looks a bit like the villain Candle Jack from the old cartoon Freakazoid. The drawing is so shitty, by the way, because I did it on my laptop with that little 2x1.5 inch touch pad that serves as a "mouse" on it, so... Also, the gun is supposed to be a revolver with each chamber having between one and six bullets, a la a domino. Because I colored the black lines dark gray and there was already dark gray on the gun and I wasn't paying attention, some of the gun detail was lost... oh well.

Same (laptop) method, though I used the shape tools this time to avoid my drawing looking like an episode of Dr. Katz. Sort of went for an "Incredibles" feel, but in my mind, the closest thing to what I'm doing is basically a Ms. Marvel ripoff... Enjoy.

I'm really glad to see these REMAKE/REMODEL threads getting so much action. Seriously, compared to other art forum threads (which just tend to be about fan wankery or artistic technique snobbery), these get backed up with really cool idea crunching,with some seriously fantastic art on top! It's a nice balance, and if major publishers were smart, they'd be trolling these threads to see who's worth hiring (or at least ripping off from...)

At this point, my faves are: kyle-latino (loose and nice), Sorbreiro (details in the outfit are awesome), Hana (love the eyes!), bryantpaul (cute, and smart concept), trigger25 (great illustrational style), Leandro (love the outfit), alberto (Holy see-through!), and RyanKelly (all around solid!). Nice work by all, and great diversity.

I felt really inspired to draw after seeing everyone's gorgeous artwork, so here's my interpretation of domino lady..

She's a young mischievous party girl, with a self invented "gun" strapped to her right wrist. Yep, a gun that shoots dominos...It looks like a clunky modernist bracelet so no one really asks what it is, plus it matches her skirt. ^_^ I wanted to show that the dominos on the bracelet will turn every time she shoots a domino (like the barrel of a gun) but I don't really know how to draw the mechanism.. >_<

I love Doktor Nick's and Alberto's Domino ladies most!

And many many thanks to Paul Sizer for showing his roughs and drafts! I always like to see how the concept is modified over revisions! Thank you! Your piece is one of my favs too! ^_^

@MartinWhitmore -- Your concept made me laugh, and I like the use of color!
@Hana -- Whoa. Creepy. Also awesome, but really, creepy.
@frequentcontributor -- That first piece, her makeup is arresting. And I love the dress. Plus, the reimagination: charities as another iteration of the "domino" theme in a revenge plot? V. cool. Beautiful work!
@ArtGarfunkel -- One of my favorites. Mature woman with corporate power and an awesome backstory? Sign me up! Also, the TIME cover is really well executed.
@trigger25 -- One woman Anonymous. ONE WOMAN ANONYMOUS. That's perfect! And I like the outfit you gave her, too!
@johnmuth -- Way to think about the details of a costume. Every time I see a superhero in heels, I can only think "that would never happen," and it throws me right out of a story.
@Mr.Smite -- Love the terrorism/anarchy angle and the practical outfit and that logo is flat-out inspired. Good thinking on the backstory. One of my faves!
@Miranda -- That's incredibly well-drawn and also creeps me the hell out. Good job.
@DisContent -- Beautiful. Just beautiful. I love the composition of the panel and of the backstory, and I like the play on the name, too. Excellent.
@PaulSizer -- That retro poster is lovely, but your final concept and art are just awesometastic. Shades of Hard Candy in a Japanese comic book vigilante setting, plus goregous, vibrant, dynamic art. I think this is my flat-out favorite!
@JeffHolland -- Superhero as brand plus mysterious middle-aged female leader = A Really Great Concept.

And, yep, possibly no one cares, but I loved this thread so much I had to share. So much fun! :D

Talk about a blank slate of a character. Going in to too much is a pen portrait, so...

I decided to ditch the domino theme entirely. Big fat bug eye sunglasses swapped for the domino mask (because you look a lot less suspicious wandering around in those) and changed the slinky gown for more of a dancing-type gown with LOTS of petticoats and so on.

To cover up the ridiculous amount of pistols strapped to her legs.

I know I'm a little late in posting this as Warren's already put up some of the others' designs, but here you go. I did this in ink and quickly colored it in photoshop. I liked Mr. Smite's idea of the outfit being the one she wore witnessing her father's death. It helps explain a rather impractical crime-fighting ensemble. I don't really see her really as a butt-kicking hero anyway, more a sleuthy, shadowy figure who survives by her wits.

I decided to use this as my art school, so here is my late first attempt at drawing since my early 20s (after some designs and sketches)... Basically, she's inspired by Batman to use her money and the dots are where her father was shot. Supposed to be a bulletproof corset and the skirt she was wearing when her father was killed. And a mask, with all the skin covered.
