There was, way back in the mists of... 2007... a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as... people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response in various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving. I think most people's favourite was the dear late Mike Wieringo's wondrous retro-aristo Buck Rogers...

I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character.

Photography and digital art is also fine, before anyone asks.

    The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.

This week's is a tough one, in a lot of ways, I think: DOMINO LADY.

This blandest of pulp heroines has been remade/remodeled at various times in the past, with little success. This is her description:

The Domino Lady is really University of California, Berkeley-educated socialite Ellen Patrick. When her father, District Attorney Owen Patrick, is murdered she puts on a domino mask and a backless white dress to avenge him.

She steals from her targets, donating most of the profits to charity after deducting her cut, and leaves a calling card with the words "Compliments of the Domino Lady".

A Berkeley girl who dresses in a party gown and an eyemask (and is usually pictured with a gun) who robs from the criminals and gives to the poor -- but takes a cut for herself.

In “The Domino Lady Doubles Back” there is more plot development. The Domino Lady sends a warning to a crooked businessman that if he fails to donate to charity, she will rob him.

    Big whoop.

So how do you reconfigure a character like that for the 21st Century and make that character something you'd want to read? You can't just -- as some have done -- make her dress into a stripper's outfit and give her unfeasibly huge tits.

There's something else going on there. A Berkeley girl with a gun? How many guns? You know who else rips off criminals? No, not Robin Hood. Omar from THE WIRE. Also, she's not called BACKLESS DRESS GIRL. She's called DOMINO LADY. It's all about the domino eyemask.

This will test you. Reinvent her as someone worth paying attention to.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with, but bear in mind this is an ART thread, and pen-portraits and other texts will be deleted. (And if you don't know what a pen-portrait is, go back to your school and insist that they provide you with a proper education.)

The funniest thing in the character bits you quoted is "She steals from her targets, donating most of the profits to charity after deducting her cut".

Like Robin Hood, she robs from the rich to give to the poor... mostly.

Wheels turning...Wacom warming up...fake coffee drinks flowing....

Sounds like she could run into Irma Vep at some point. Now THERE'S a cat fight worthy of Wizard Magazine!

I might give this one a try if I get ahead on my other projects.

    This is turd.

Transform said turd into Bentley Continental.

    Or: solid golden Waldorf salad.

But, fookin' 'ell, Warren, don't these R:R's of yours just make our coffee-stained, hazed and bruised, artist-y brains shiver with glee every time you post 'em! WHEEEEEEEE!!!

Here is my offering, I went back to my Magical girl roots and gave her an appropriate talking animal sidekick. Ordinary, clumsy, (aren't they all?) coed Ellen by day, she puts on her Domino Mask and at night becomes Lady Domino! with her lovable talking raccoon (who lives behind her dorm). She fights against evil and gives to the poor.

I do try to maintain standers of ridiculous.

has a hell of a kickback

taking drive by shooting to the next level, miss Domino has invested her inherited money and cut-of-spoils- into to the most ridiculous yet effective weaponry imaginable.

    Sixgun jetbike makes everything better.

Raccoon and tutu, meanwhile, is downright alarming. Keep up the good work.

Not an attempt at art at all, but anyway, started thinking about Darryl Hannah's Pris makeup and googled around a bit for other people who'd nicked that as inspiration:

she must severely doubt her own physical capabilities if the best revenge she can think of is to trick men instead of just plain beating the shit out of them.
is sex her weapon of choice, or is it by default?
from what it looks like, her heists aren't even anything great. "oh, rich dude is throwing a party. i'll just sneak away from no one's looking, and into the study i go!"
garbage. is anyone going to give her any balls? or at least some psychological tension?

@ kyle-latino. I must ask - Was the Diabolik similarity intentional, or am I the only one who sees it. Either way, very nice.
    • CommentTimeDec 8th 2008
@Ken Miller No offense intended here, and let me first say that the quality of art is really good. But the design reminds me of Halle Berry as Catwoman.

No, actually, though I can see it know that you say something. It's funny, if you think about it: Diabolik is the exact opposite of a Domino mask because everything else is cover but his eyes. Ha!

I was actually just reading some Woman in Red in Thrilling Comics. We often see the big loose Dr Doom hood, but I like the tight one that she wears.

I feel like doing that to people, now.

(Man goes to dip a tortilla chip in bean dip that's possibly not fresh.)
(Slaps chip out of man's hand. Runs laughing into the night.)

But back on-topic. Yes, gears are turning. Plus, no setting needed, so I might be able to bang this out tonight.
