    I reckon everyone received this email today:

    "I need to come up with a new Marvel project, as I'm reaching the end on a few things up there... I now have an entire folder full of aborted ideas. See, my job at Marvel is to be the mad scientist in the basement, bringing old properties back to life... The sf stuff at Marvel is covered. The remaining trademark books are pretty lifeless... By "trademark books," I mean books that Marvel have already published..."

    He mentions Shang-Chi, which could have been great, but rightly points to the rights to Rohmer's character no longer being available to Marvel. (Although, might this not be an opportunity to re-license -- could it really cost Marvel that much -- thus paving the way for a new book AND the reprinting of the old stuff?)

    Anyway -- what old Marvel property would we like to see put through the grinder?

    Me, I'd like to see Hellstorm again. Give him a haircut and show the people at Vertigo what Hellblazer could have been if Warren had been left alone to do it justice. I know -- we have that issue of Planetary that basically states "I don't want to do Hellblazer anymore, it isn't relevant", but I guess I'm too thick to understand why it isn't relevant, and I can't think of anything I'd enjoy more than to see Warren writing either Hellblazer or Hellblazer masquerading as Hellstorm.

    Failing that, it might be fun to revamp the entire 2099 line in a single title, ala NewUniversal.

    And here's a really bad idea:

    Howard The Duck. Howard always seemed to me to be a child of the underground comix, and is inextricably linked in my mind with the pricks at Disney suing the shit out of Dan O'Neil and the Air Pirates. I like to think they couldn't do it again, successfully at any rate (though it might be a costly experiment). But wouldn't I like to see someone make it worth their while to try. Imagine Howard, a cartoon duck in a realistic world, being used as a way of discussing free speech and other forms of civil liberty. You could throw out the old continuity, have him come to earth in the McCarthy era and bring him right up to the present, with a stop-over in the sixties to involve him in the underground comix scene and replay the Air Pirates thing for a generation who may not be aware of what a vile corporation Disney really is. In a perfect world this would be illustrated by Bobby London, who was one of the air pirates, and whose Dirty Duck is drawn in a bang-on imitation of Herriman's Krazy Kat.

    Hellstorm: Prince of Lies #12-21 (1994).
    Doom 2099 #25-39 (1995-96).
    2099 A.D. Apocalypse (Dec 1995)
    2099 A.D. Genesis (Jan 1996)

    And Marvel has a Howard revamp (not sure by who) underway right now.

    Yup. Well aware that he's already written those books. Does that mean he shouldn't write them again? And keep in mind he's come a long way since that work, lovely as it was at the time.

    And I kind of suspect that any attempt to do Howard without some kind of historical awareness is doomed to failure.
