There was, way back in the mists of... 2007... a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as... people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response in various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving. I think most people's favourite was the dear late Mike Wieringo's wondrous retro-aristo Buck Rogers...

I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character.

Photography and digital art is also fine, before anyone asks.

The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.

This week,it's grim pulp vengeance -- in space. Basil Wolverton's SPACEHAWK:

"Spacehawk had no other name. He also had no fixed base of operations, other than his space ship, and no sidekicks, assistants, official contacts, love interests or other supporting characters. He had but one mission in life — to protect the innocent throughout the Solar System, and mete out the occasional gruesome fate to vanquished evildoers. Comics historian Mike Benton called him "A grim gunslinger — the dark side of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.""

"Spacehawk was a grim, relentless avenger of the innocent, prowling the star-lanes and outer reaches, and the stark meticulous art served only to highlight the singular appearance of the alien monstrosities and landscapes crafted by Wolverton. Many kids had nightmares after reading Spacehawk, and many parents wrote complaining letters because of it…"

"Aliens lived on strange worlds in dwellings that resembled nothing as much as a cross between medieval castles and Earthly observatories. The landscapes were dotted with flora that often resembled earthworms in muffs, yet the basic building blocks of alien technology were the rivet and the steel panel."

"Inside the spaceships, Wolverton liked panels showing the Spacehawk staring out one of his large windows, looking at a spectacular outer space panorama. He also regularly showed the Spacehawk gripping the large, upright levers and control sticks of machinery."

I have no shots of the spaceship. So, you know, feel free to fuck around with that.

Your task is, therefore, to update Spacehawk for 2008 (2009?) and render the character into something you'd be interested in reading today. Grimness seems important. Grimness taken to comical levels would seem to be an obvious choice for some of you. Chip has probably already zeroed in on Spacehawk gripping the large, upright levers and control sticks.

Obviously, there's a degree of tech fetishism to be had here, too -- guns, spacesuits, a spaceship he lives in (which is probably also appropriately grim).

braak - Wolverton became well known for his weird characterizations in later years. Though not a spacehawk story, Brain Bats of Venus is a good example of his science fiction craziness.

I might try my hand at this. At first I was going to do it as Space-Batman, but that doesn't quite fit. Space-Punisher fits better. After returning from the Vietnam Spacewar, Frank Castle's spacefamily was gunned down by rival spacemobsters during their spacepicnic in the spacepark. Now he punishes the spaceguilty as Spacehawk.

I actually really like the idea of a repugnant neo-nazi style skinhead, crashing about outer space, putting the boot to aliens. The character being an absolute ass, but a hero for the wrong reason.

I'm fully aware that being Skin doesn't have to do with racism directly, but it's what comes to mind when you have some dude running around the galaxy aimlessly killing other species of intelligent life. Reminds me of Fear Agent.

Currently I can't picture Spacehawk as anything but a faceless "super soldier" who goes around helping the galaxy whether they want it or NOT!

Also, I picture a hyper-future where intergallactic travel is mostly portals and not physical vehicles. I blame the drugs.

Great and a great variety. Yorko's entry has a dour grittiness I really dig.

There's an interesting genre-vibe between Spacehawk and Fletcher Hank's surreal, execrable "Stardust the Super Wizard." The latter looks like a crude knockoff of Wolverton's work.

I've got two things worked out so far.

First, the gun.

It fires great dramatic bolts of blue plasma that melt steel into pudding and turn exit wounds into pink mist. More on this later.

Second, the combat helmet.

He deploys it when the bullets start flying. It pops out of a small unit at his shoulders and wraps around his head. I'll probably tweak it to look less like Iron Man's helmet and more like a steel-and-actuator gimp mask.

Wow. There are so many great ones already that I've already forgotten most of the ones I wanted to comment on. They all seem to have already gotten their props, though, so I don't feel so bad. As for the comment on page one (from johnjones?) about the Space Vietnam War, would the Viet Cong use wormholes instead of underground tunnels (...or underground tunnels dug by giant space worms...)?

What's funny is, I used to have an old (early-90's) Dark Horse reprint (like the second image provided by Warren) issue of Spacehawk! I don't remember much about it, and wouldn't have ever thought about it again if not for this thread. I used to be really into Wolverton and other underground cartoonists in junior high, and I'll be getting around to doing a take on this soon.

All righty, my contribution this week is going to be later, but I have been doing a little sketching/concept work in preparation.
I wanna go dark with this one, but I decided to do some logo work, seeing as all great heroes have great logo presence. Plus, if they have a real "designed" look, it makes it all the more cool when they fall and deteriorate, right?
Plus, I make my living as a graphic designer, so I better be able to crap this stuff out in my sleep, right?

I thought about Warrens suggestions and thought the grim and grittiness was the way to go. Especially when he mentioned him as a loner and punishing the evil of the cosmos. I imagined in the future Humanity and other various Species operate throughout the universe like the world, with territories and governments. I imagined the Spacehawk as a Black-ops type operative sent out to do the secret assignments that were in the best interests of humanity.The dirtiest jobs the universe has to offer. Like a ghost he's rarely seen and has become a myth passed around the commlinks, a lone figure of justice who seems to enjoy his job a little too much.

it seemed like spacehawk is a very camp version of Splinter Cell....In Spaaaace! Hence the trifocals. Was aiming for a retro-grim, different from the original.

Tried experimenting with different versions of a dome helmet, sort of a deep-sea-diver rig as a hazard suit type deal. Helmet's supposed to open up, 'unfold' I guess would be the word.

Couldn't resist throwing in a monocle in the sans-helmet view. Also, er, I can't draw hands very well. And maybe arms too. Oops.

Here's SpaceHawk just after battle, doing some frontline patching-up. Being alone and always running from battle to battle, he basically just grabs and grafts anything usefull in places where he just lost some tissue.

Already too many superb contributions this week to single out favourites.

I felt a war haunted, hangdog face, in the Lee Marvin mould seemed appropriate. I don't believe for a minute that this really is former marine corporal Hawk, more likely it's just the name of the guy he killed to inherit the suit. If only because it avoids unfavourable comparisons with Paul Sizer's excellent logo design, this grizzled Hawk incarnation isn't the type to have wasted too much time fretting about his brand image. After 4000 light years without a smoke, he just wants to kill the bad guy so he can light up off the smouldering corpse. The mirrored helmet visor forces adversaries to witness their own death throes, a grim,last minute addition I exported wholesale from Michael Powell's "Peeping Tom".

Sorry so late this week; internet was down... Anyway, my SpaceHawk is similar to the themes of Man-Thing or The Shadow, in that each episode, he views an unfolding alien drama, and then at the end, vaporizes the planet that he is watching. He doesn't care about "good" or "evil", but simply watches, then vaporizes, and then floats to another planet to do the same again.

Sorry for the delay, I was busy in Detroit signing books at Green Brain Comics, but had two really long drives between Detroit and Kalamazoo to brainstorm, so here's my entry:

"As his spaceship more and more becomes his home and eventually his world, SpaceHawk begins to detach himself from the original concepts of enlightened cosmic justice (along with his humanity) he once sought. Convinced that the small, perfect world of his ship represents the way to achieve intergalactic harmony, the elimination of all not like himself becomes his one goal. Well, great minds think alike, obviously, since your Spacehawk is exactly like mine... Just kidding, but your drawing and concept ARE eerily similar to mine: Receding hairline with bits of gray, ominous glowing red lights, never leaving the ship, destroying everything...

I do like how you've spun the Spacehawk logo to make it look like the hawk is diving down towards something to grab/kill it. It gives it more of an immediacy and intensity. Nice, as usual.

Yeah, I noticed that we both came up with similar takes. You got a better "empty look" in the eyes than I did. Nice drawing! I dig the subdued palette.

And yes, I discovered that while the logo had the hawk flying up, it looks noble, but aiming the hawk down makes it look like it's swooping down to "kill the stars". Which is where things eventually went, eh?

My faves so far: Terry Taylor (god, it DOES look like Freddie Mercury), trigger25 (cute AND grim), lx (like a scratchy faxed photo from space), Dapper Dan (like a helicopter indeed) and you, frequentcontributor (sick and lonely image).

I'm not much on the story ideas, but basically I thought it would be funny if Spacehawk's translator was set wrong and all of the aliens he murdered the shit out of over the years were actually peaceful and trying to bring peace and friendship to mankind. I would make him a dark, brooding misguided Punisher/Batman of space. A hard drinking, hard smoking, shoot first and shoot those who ask questions later type.

Not sure how much series longevity that would have but like I said, I'm not a story guy. And I'm just attempting to be an art guy.

Very very late, but I have good excuses. Flew out for a friend's wedding, then moved house the night I got back. New house tried to kill us with hay fever for 2 days til we scrubbed and bleached it clean.
Spacehawk: Wings in his hair, like Paulie from the Sopranos. Hawk-like nose. Talon hands and feet, which help with the alien killing. Why is he standing on a giant brain? I have no idea.

I really wanted to make him more like a Space Falconer, but the filth was not in me. Perhaps next time.

Well, I'm a huge Winsor Mccay fan, and the Little Nemo strips certainly are an artist's playground, however, Nemo himself is a bit of a blank slate (perhaps a good thing, but not much to work with beyond "sleeping kid..."), and I have been Googling around trying to find someone that isn't blatantly obvious. No offense, but most people have heard of Little Nemo (or the Shadow, or Doc Savage, etc.), and he was featured in a (bit of a Remake/Remodel) animated film from the 90's, so our collective consciousnesses might have been tainted...

For instance, I found a guy named Satan Hall! Unfortunately, he's just a detective (with inexplicably pointed ears, and a Namor-style haircut to match, for some reason...) who kills criminals. Soooo.....boring. I want to try to find something that isn't in space, since we just did that, and perhaps a woman (but one without any Catwoman-esque tendancies), to change it up. Someone who didn't start out as Caucasian would be a plus, too.

I'm certainly open to suggestions, and consider Nemo to be a valid backup.

Yes, well, I could look up old pulp characters all night, but I've found 2 that I like; let me know what you think (if Warren doesn't give us a new challenge, himself...)

1) Captain Satan: "...began life in 1938. Caray Adair, a criminal trying to reform, leads a band of gangsters (Doc, Happy, Frenchie, Soapy, Big Bill, and Gentlemen Dan) in a war against crime. He robs from the crime lords and redistributes the wealth to the poor and needy. In his guise as Captain Satan he pretends to be superhuman, and he uses the devil symbol on his chest in much the same way that the Spider did, to frighten criminals. He also leaves behind projects a devil symbol (by taping a cut-out devil figure onto a flashlight lens) to scare crooks."

I know it sounds a bit like Domino Lady, but the NAMES on his band of gangsters makes it all worth it for me. That and the devil is cool... Here's his pic:

2) The Campfire Girls: "...created by Julianne DeVries and appeared in the four book "Banner Campfire Girls Series," which ran from 1933 to 1935 and began with The Campfire Girls Flying Around The Globe. The Girls (haven't been able to find their names yet, sorry) fly around the world in a technologically-advanced airplane (provenance unknown to me, alas), fought crime (as "federal investigators," no less), and even met the President."

Now, the tiny pic below and the sparse description COULD serve as a hindrance, but I like to think that these characters could be taken in ANY direction... And if you only half look at the book cover below, it looks as though the girl in the right rear of the frame is holding a severed head (whether she is or not: up to you!)...

How about Nick Carter:

Nick Carter is a fictional character who first appeared in a dime novel entitled The Old Detective's Pupil; or, The Mysterious Crime of Madison Square on September 18, 1886. This novel was written by John R. Coryell from a story by Ormond G. Smith, the son of one of the founders of Street & Smith.

In 1915, Nick Carter Weekly became Street & Smith's Detective Story Magazine. Novels featuring Carter continued to appear through the 1950s, by which time there was also a popular radio show, Nick Carter, Master Detective, which aired on Mutual from 1943 to 1955

Following the success of the James Bond series, the character was updated for a long-running series of novels featuring the adventures of secret agent Nick Carter, aka the Killmaster. The first book, Run Spy Run, appeared in 1964 and more than 260 Nick Carter-Killmaster adventures were published up until 1990.

Carter was a prototype for Doc Savage - raised to be a master detective and Olympic-level athlete so he can get revenge on the criminals who killed his parents.

When the pulps took over, he was transformed from a detective to a two-fisted global adventurer; later he became a James Bond style spy nd later still a Bolanesque vigilante.

Yeah, Nemo is a trip and a half. That, and Winsor Mccay sort of "invented" animation...
