It's Garth in Reverent Mode. So no deviant sex jokes, no swearing, old-fashioned heroism where the hero is Correct and Good and Noble in the iconic sense while politicians are snivelling, two-faced and cowardly. It's a respectful revision as opposed to the angry, anti-Thatcherite revisionism of Morrison's late-80s version.

You will like if this is the sort of thing you like.

I didn't have high hopes for it but I picked it up just to give it a shot and was pleasantly surprised. I don't know anything about the character, but I liked what I read. The storytelling is pretty solid, definitely pulled me along enough to make me want to pick up #2. Less for the fight-the-aliens space story and more because there's a lot of really interesting post-nuclear politics and I'm curious to see it fleshed out.

The only Dan Dare I've ever read was the Morrison/Hughes story, so I've probably got a skewed view of the concept. In a way, this seems a bit similar, with the "Dan must come out of retirement to save the world again" theme, but it seems far less bleak.

I went in with no expectations and it ended up being pretty good. I'll be back for #2.

Really disappointing. I was looking for space battles, the Mekon in his hoverchair and high-falutin' space hijinks. This'll work in the trade, no doubt, but as a single issue it completely failed to grab me.

I was hoping for more from Ennis.

On the other hand, Erskine's work is as solid as ever and he does a fine Gary Frank impression.

Ennis handles the story well but I've never liked Erskine's pencils. For an example, see the panel during the spaceship battle with a woman in the background waving her arms and going "Ahh!" Hopefully his art won't kill my interest in this like it did with Jack Cross.

t's not bad at all! Exactly what the doctor ordered! It somewhat takes the same direction as Morrison's version, but more expertly and more in line with what you'd expect from a revival of an action comic in the modern day. Dare's bored (and his situation borders on the horrifying, honestly, but maybe I'm thinking too much about it and I won't spoil it for you), and his only hope to seeing active service again is by working with an idiot, self-serving Prime Minister in facing off an alien invasion force. So it bloody goes. Ennis does convey the sense of British pride as well as cynicism you'd wish from such a veteran character, honestly.

I think the way the story flows though might lend itself to better reading once it's collected.

REALLY enjoyed it, very much a tonal brother to Ministry in Space (so much so that if you look at the pics on the wall in Dare's asteroid home, you'll see the HC cover for ministry of space in 2 shots. They are supposed to be pics of the space program and england's past, but I got a good chuckle out of it.)

I think you'll quite like it Warren.

 I really enjoyed it.

I have a passing association with Dan Dare, read a bit in my youth (not classic Dare, but the relaunched Eagle stuff) and played the amazing Spectrum games but feel I know the character better than I probably do (it's British comics osmosis, read enough of them and you feel like you know the lot).

I liked Ennis stark, serious take on the premise and think the Digby revision has legs.

Oh, and if anyone wants some 'new', beautifully realised, 'old style' Dare do check out Spaceships Away.

holy crap! Morrison wrote a Dan Dare, must get my hands on that.

I liked the story a lot, similar in themes to the classic, but the tone was different.

I do have to say that I hated the art. Erskine is not my favorite artist, his inks take over Army@Love and Jack Cross was quite possible the ugliest book I have ever read. Hopefully as with those two books, the story can continue to overpower the art.

I liked all, from the Eagle in the sky of the splash page, all that totally british stuff: the fox, the cricket, the darts, the beer, the uniformed scholar, doctor who and rose... (er... not, just joking).
I liked that the second aboard the spaceship's named Christian (Mutiny on Board), pretty good anxiety in that scene.

The bad side of that is... is just a comic book, too expensive for thirty pages and "to be continued". I really would rather buy some graphic novel with the character, or some black and white book on the Scott Pilgrim format.

By the way. I loved MINISTRY OF SPACE.

I can't say I love it yet (although Erskine's art was bringing fond memories of MINISTRY right the way through), but it's started solidly, with a nice build and establishment of character and tension.

It's filling a small hole in my monthly purchases nicely; I'm quite liking a lot of Virgin's range so far.

A little late, but I just read the thing and didn't much care for it. I generally enjoy Ennis and his varied styles, but this was altogether too dry, too bland, too old hat. And very little actually happened that made me give a damn about any of the characters. Being mostly unfamiliar with Dan Dare (besides reading about the character), I felt like Ennis may have been relying too heavily on people being acquainted with his personality and motivations, which left the rest of us with just a very drab character. Your generic hero.

Besides that, I really didn't enjoy the art. I don't usually complain about the look of comics unless they're really awful because, really, in most cases even ugly art works. But this seemed far too amateur for the project and the spaceships themselves looked like silvery loofahs. Plus, every few panels, someone made an inexplicably weird face and Dan himself seemed to be wearing a very ill-fitting fur coat. I feel like the overall package (pencils, inks and colors) were all just very ick, to use a professional industry term.

That said, there's nothing to really make me want to buy the following issue. Which is too bad, because I could do with some serious space opera adventures. Fear Agent will have to do for now.

Edit: I should also note that I think this is the sort of thing that may end up better as a GN. And that, in a way, is another detractor because on first hearing about the project it sounded like it would be more of a serial adventure. In other words, I was hoping for something different and while I'm sure it may wind up being better later, I don't have the cash or patience to watch it drag along.

Morrison and Hughes' Dan Dare has haunted me since I read it years ago. One of the bleakest and most nihilistic things I've ever read, which is odd considering Morrison is usually an optimist.

I miss the Dan Dare strips from 2000AD all those decades ago. Bellardinelli and Gibbons on art; gorgeous stuff. I'd love it if Rebellion gave them the reprint treatment they've given some of their other titles.
