It's Friday, it's FREAKANGELS.

Morning, Whitechapel. We're a week off from xmas, so I'd imagine some of you are probably preemptively medicating, broke, and/or looking for ways to fake your own deaths. Alternatively, I'm sure someone's in a good mood and looking forward to family. Freaks. How's everyone, anyway?

Is this referencing internet trends ('All your forthcoming bone fractures are belong to us'/'I can has vodka?') just netnerd injokes, or is it it part of the cultural future Warren's created in Whitechapel?

 Oh man, that last line is amazing!

I'm liking Luke as a character, it's still really unclear to me as to where he's coming from. Very interesting. Again to Mr. Ellis and Mr. Duffield: Kudos.

Also, I am leaving Austin tomorrow for my big Christmas journey around the Gulf of Mexico. Dive bars all along the southern Seabord are already trembling with fear.

 Interesting how the "most intellectual Freakangel" is a little dumb on some fundamental level. He's just pushing for a beatdown. Poor Conner, Alice is cutting him apart with every memory she shares, isn't she? How do explain to the woman you love that you and your buddies destroyed her entire civilization because you got tired of running from some tiny covert military-science portion of it?

I'm guessing that last part as it strikes me as unlikely that the British government would make a general public announcement that the Freakangel kids were deadly psychics. For one thing, no one in Whitechapel knows about that part of them and surely Whitechapelers had access to television before the Splash. It also seems to fit the situation. The 'angels were born into their little village. Eventually the government investigated them and took them into custody. Then they escaped and spent time running from the secret forces pursuing them. They got sick of the running and broke the world to make it stop.

 Just as I start jabbing my foul and corrupted veins with the drug that is Freakangels, we're "taking a break. For Christmas." To be fair, the Internet Jesus can do as he likes, can't he? On the personal side, it's a little bit of both. I'm looking forward to vegging out with family at Xmas and getting together with a friend visiting from overseas. Until then, though, it's lack of sleep and madness time trying to find speakers for a small event when everybody's away for the holidays.

On the FREAKANGELS side, it's wonderful awesomeness. Alice's mourning the past and accepting the present has pushed me away from my earlier suspicions of her and made me like her. The KK and Caz snark team hit one out of the ballpark with that unexpected and hilarious Internet culture reference line.

Thank you, Internet Jesus for that wonderful setup. Christmas is coming up and you and Paul Duffield's next installment (whenever it comes) promises to gift us with something I'd appreciate: attractive women delivering well-deserved scumbag beatdowns.

I'm amused by the idea of an "All your future bone fractures" T-shirt. However, I hesitate because I worry about putting a gleam into William Christensen's eye about developing more ways for sucking out more of my money for Ellis goodness. Not that I'd say no. It could be worse. Christensen could tempt me with a postcard book featuring illustrated quips from Ellis comics.

 Beautiful, as always.

I have the feeling that Luke is going to have to make himself very valuable to the group, very quickly, or get lost in a hurry. If he was behind the mortar, I'm sure his intention was to blow up the Freakcave and not actually the FreakAngels, just shake them up because he's angry with them. Not that that is a good excuse, but it's Luke. It would please me if the mortar was just the annoying normal people, and not the work of a FreakAngel, or Ex-FreakAngel, at all.

Prep for the Holidays is fine, though I'm running out of time to finish up gifts. I'm making some of the gifts this year, so I have to hurry it up, but I couldn't stay away on a Friday. If it weren't for the Holidays, I'd be around more (like in the remake/remoddle thread), but I've no time. Ah, well, such is life in this season.

 @sinnick

do you think Connor is in love with Alice? My impression was that it was always more of a protective instinct on his part.

Okay, love is probably overstating it, but I think he is attracted to her and is somewhat protective of her. How or whether that'll grow into a true relationship depends on future events, I think.

On another point, I like the way that Alice can think ahead and problem solve. She realizes that she can effectively replace Kirk at the Watchtower. She can still coordinate the 'angels because she's in their mass mind and deliver another 'angel into the search below. Plus, she can also set up that rope she's been wanting in case things go wrong (and you know they almost certainly will).

@ Indigo Rose

If he was behind the mortar, I'm sure his intention was to blow up the Freakcave and not actually the FreakAngels, just shake them up because he's angry with them.

I just don't see it. The morter attack would take planning and work. Luke isn't much for either. I think he is brilliant, but his brilliance strikes me as more the "wondrous idea that strikes a mind fully-formed" than anything else. Luke's 99% inspiration, 1% perspiration. He's getting in serious trouble right now because of it. He had the sudden, brilliant idea to mind-control his girlfriend and "set things straight." He executed that idea without thinking through or planning for the possible consequences. Sirkka's taking him apart because he never even considered what would happen if the others detected his actions. And this even after Arkady specirfically warned him that Sirkka and detected him and what would transpire because of it.

 That was a nice slice.

I just finished "A World made by hand" this week, by the gent who did "The Long Emergency". It's about a world where peak oil, a spot of terrorism and economic collapse have moved people back to smaller communal life. The bit with the new girl recalling the way things used to be put me in mind of that book.

It snowed here overnight. Heart Attack snow, wet and heavy and awful. I fucking hate winter. @JohnJones - I know, that's why I phrased it the way I did; "If he was behind the mortar..." and added at the end "It would please me if the mortar was just the annoying normal people, and not the work of a FreakAngel, or Ex-FreakAngel, at all." I suppose I could have done the IF in bold, italics, or caps to get my real point across, but I got lazy, sorry. I agree, I don't think it was he, though I don't want it to be Mark either, because then he'd be behind everything... that's just annoying. Mark as big threat is great, but as source of all threats, not so much. In my opinion.

 Hi Whitechapel.

I'm starting to really enjoy the fact that the FreakAngel package doesn't come with any sort of specific ethics. The 'Angels seem to be just kids with more power than they know what to do with, which makes them more three dimensional.

In other news, after three days of being coated in a sheet of spine-threatening ice, southern IN is finally dry again. In fact, it's almost 60 degrees today. That's almost nude frolicking weather. Makes me wish for an early spring, but I'd settle for just getting the holidays over with.

I have a tendency to go windbag if I'm not forcibly subdued.

For my part, I think that Mark (or another Freakangel who is not Luke) is behind the attacks, especially the morter attack. Alice outlined the reasons for that in episode 36. Besides, "everything" isn't as much as it looks like. By my count, less than twelve hours have passed since page 1 of episode 1 (I figure KK woke up around 10 AM and it's probably around 8 or 9 PM as of the end of Episode 39). It's enough to make me wonder if the true progenitor of the Freakangels was a psychic Jack Bauer.

For my part, I'm not sure that Mark is the Big Threat. I think it's probably going to be related to whatever Arkady was checking on in Episode 27.

 @infomancer

I agree. The thought that they all focus on different in no apparent way makes this series work, not just superhero wet stories. Makes them humans. That's why Luke and Mark aren't "bad" guys to the strictest sense in my opinion. The Freakangels have a code on power usage because they know how out of hand it can get and have to enforce it, but they didn't kill mark, and arkady didn't permanently veg luke because you can always see the good in those your tied to, at least enough to be reluctant to kill them. Let's not kid ourselves, if any of us had the power of a Freakangel we wouldn't all be using our powers for the good of mankind or even with any sort of ethics. Some of us sure, but no one can claim that they would never slip. That's why I think they didn't flood the world out of self-defense really. They would feel more justified, it's psychology to make yourself believe the reasons behind any hard action you take. I think they felt a little pressure but really mostly curiosity. Curiosity at what would happen if they concentrated their mass mind on a single effort. Unfortunately for them the world ended.

On a separate note, noticing a lot requests being made for things on merch, can some of that stuff find it's way on hoodies? Ones that zip, have pockets, and come in Black, lavender, and charcoal grey, the Freakangel colors so to speak? It's winter time, popular item, and blankets are as wearable. I'll personally buy one of each color! Make sure to get the logo on there:)

 @johnjones

are you referring to her quote about it being worse, whatever "it" is?

My assumption on that was that she was trying to expand her perspective, "go wider" and see more of the world. sort of the way paul atreides describes his "race consciousness"- a length of gauze undulating in the wind- i think that arkady is trying to see the future. somewhere in the 'angels' near future, there is another calamity sneaking up on them, and she tries to prevent it, but she can't even understand what it actually is. that, i think, is her work. and if the FA package allows her to pop herself in and out of whatever undulation she likes, then theres a lot more going on under the pale skin and purple eyes than even they suspect.

 @ Ariana - In an odd synchronicity, I read the post on your blog about your divorce yesterday and my wife just left me last week. Although we're getting along better now than we ever did while married, I probably won't be attending her family's XMas celebration. Rather, I'll be alone in a stupid, empty house, as my side of the family all lives very far away. And, as I stumble drunkenly around, I'll now be thinking of the booze as medication. So thank you for that.

@ Brad - I think that the reference to vehicle GPS, along with "i can has" and "all your base", is a good hint that Warren's getting at culture, shared memory, and also utilizing intarnets memes. So, yeah. Both.

 Took me most of the day to get to FreakAngels and then all night to get through WhiteChapel. But it beats getting actual shit done or sleeping.

More and more I do love Alice. This is a very different way if introducing a world setting and I'm enjoying the hell out of it. There isn't any stranger in a strange land. A hapless soul having to learn the ropes in a new land. It isn't a single person possessed of a mystery that requires rethinking everything he thinks he knows. It's a story, progressing at top speed in a very different setting from our world but with just enough memory of our world to toss out comments that give us (poor hapless readers) some context. I like that Alice, when her mind is free, is a smart girl with a lot of determination. Yes, the clever lines got me to laugh, but I can't stop thinking about Alice and her former life.

I am heading home for Christmas. Snow is grand and all but I currently can't share it with anyone I love. I miss Los Angeles so much it aches. The ache just gets searing and bad when I think about friends I haven't seen in months. Family is exciting too because we haven't had a full house in years. It'll probably only be cool for a day or two and then we'll get on each others' nerves. But fortunately I haven't sold my car yet, so I can still get away.

 @Louie:
because it was probably only "mildly amusing at the time" to you. Far more people than just you LOVED it, and still do. I agree with Ariana- a good sense of humor will get you far. It's good to have one if you want to LIVE in the apocalypse and not just survive it.
And they DON'T have a serious cholera problem to sort out. They have clean, drinkable water, so it's not much to worry about unless you're not drinking the clean stuff. Not like you can seek it out and battle it with your powers, anyway. I think they'd have figured that one out by now.
Gah.

Also, you now know when the Freakangels first got on the internet.

How do we know? Freakangels doesn't seem to have anything that references a specific date or year, unless I missed something, which is easily possible. Paul's artwork is so brilliant and nuanced that I find myself spotting things on second, third and forth viewing that I missed on my first look. In any case I tended to figure that the story was taking place sometime in the 2010s or 2020s. Far enough into an alternate future not to stumble over current events but not so far that the basic architecture of London would've dramatically changed (no gleaming obelisks or "future-buildings"). Assuming that Freakangels is taking place in alternate now (ie, 2008-2009 or so), that places the 'angels accessing the 'net at around age 14-15. Which seems a little unlikely. I'd've figured that they'd've gotten onto the net by age 6 or 7. Luke probably did it at age 5 because he was brilliant and really into porn.

no gleaming obelisks or "future-buildings"

That's why Freakangels is so mesmerizing, the setting is already there hence all its elements stabbed right into our percepetion. The "all your base" stuff works also in that scheme. With all the "possible future" stories we come to read, such elements show our suspension of disbelief is not taken for granted and make Freakangels stand above many others. So many.

 Honestly, I find it easier to suspend disbelief by viewing Freakangels as occurring in an "alternate near-future" than as an alternate now. For one thing, if it's in an alternate near-future I don't have to keep pretending that it's still an alternate Feb 15, 2008.
