As an experiment, we've stuck a chatroom onto the side of Whitechapel. You can see it in the left-hand menubar there -- Whitechapel Market.

Ignore the hideous ads. This is a test run to see if it is enjoyed. Should we decide to adopt the chatroom permanently, we'll probably embed it into the fabric of Whitechapel so that we can lose the ads.

Back in the days of my first online community, we had a chatroom that was positively lived in 24/7.

Play with it. It has all kinds of odd functions. It even looks like it has a RSS call.

the widget doesn't load much of anything under the latest safari. Loading it up in camino yields the expected results though. so yay, i guess.

Widget works for me with Safari 3.04 on Leopard. Takes a few seconds to 'establish' itself on screen, but then is easy to move or resize.

Switched from IE6 to FireFox because I kept getting an odd script error that was kicking me off. (thanks guys & gals). Name colors can be interesting because you get the next color in the spectrum when you log in. Will was cute in pink. Sound was a PIA, so I've left it on mute. I like the fact you can "mute" a single person so you can't see their rants, but you can still talk with everyone else. As Jtraub has said, the new room with new link is annoying (which you said will disapear anyway). I figured that's a balance for the ads. Icons are nice to have with a name, so you can see who you are talking to. The last time I did chat was MIRC, over a decade ago. Kinda of comparing what I remember to this. Other than not finding a private chat feature (which I wouldn't recommend cause I can just imagine all the solicitations you'd get) it seems pretty solid. I'd like to get more people in there to see how it handles the load. Yes, break it and put it back together.

I mentioned the new chat opening with links to Ariana earlier. Her response was that she wasn't aware if it could be disabled, but made the point that it is a handy feature (if multiple people click on a link you can all discuss it in the new chat window without "polluting" the main chat).

Additionally, pink is not my color.

The chat system seems to be function fairly well, without a lot of the pain of some other web base chat systems. That said, I do wish it was one that tied to an IRC system (or even Jabber), so I could run it in a separate app rather than my web browser.

This is a personal preference, of course, but hopefully something to consider for the future.

Ariana, I know the chat is hosted off site, but is there any sort of widget that can be installed to give people on the forums a sense of how many people are in there at any given time? It's pretty active at the moment, but I think there'd generally be a bigger draw if people could see that others were in there.

An active users count is nice, but can also result in some odd behavior - either killing chat because its 1 or 0 and nobody wants to be first in, or causing stampedes.

Also, there are a ton of people popping in and out of the chat throughout the day. Maybe one or two different people every hour or so. If you want someone to talk to that isn't me being AFK, leave the window open but tucked away somewhere for about half an hour, you're much more likely to intercept someone that way.

CLONING: The same user might appear twice or even thrice on the namelist.

TROLLS: Not a bug, but it happens. They'll log in and beg you to fuck them. Yes, via the internet. But remember, there is a mute button.

Assuming the IRC route is taken, www.mibbit.com seems like a simple solution for those non-IRC savvy people who want to chat on IRC. Click link, enter chatroom.

Mibbit doesn't work with all servers though, so http://webchat.freenode.net/ is one solution if the chatroom's at freenode.

At the moment the main problems seem to be an announcement that your user name is registered and an inability to see anyone who's in the room before you.

To get around it, try respelling your name with a letter chaged here and there and give a shout out when you're in there so others can reply, let you know if anyones there.

An IRC room would be nice.

Ah right there has been some crossed wires. Two irc channels have formed on two different servers (some of us have been using irc.efnet.net). You've been connecting to the default server option for mibbit.

Not that there's anything wrong with that... I don't really know what the solution is on what server to use. I suspect that it's best if the people who've been using efnet jump over to irc.mibbit.net which is the other server.

That's what I propose at any rate.

Could everyone for the time being please join #whitechapel2 and ignore #whitechapel for now? It would really speed things up if you could do that.

Jess and Taphead have operator status in the new channel. I also have administrator control and will only use it is I have to. They are the only two ops by virtue of being there all the time not being arseholes. Remember the rules for the IRC channel are the same as this message board. Jess and Taphead have been instructed to keep to the spirit of those rules.

We should return to our regular channel in a few days when everything is fixed.

If you are coming into the IRC channel via a client and not the Mibbit web interface, please make sure that you have disabled auto-accepting file send requests. You never know when an idiot is going to show up and try to give you a virus, or in this case, something that forces you to disconnect.

If you do not know how to change these settings, please post and ask.

Nope, Steampunk's still hanging in there. If you go to cons for anime, scifi, comics, or even Renfaires, you'll see folks in pseudo-victorian/edwardian garb with brass clockwork bits and goggles on, and in sizable number. One of the major chicago scifi cons was entirely steampunk themed this year. The artists alley and dealer's room at Anime Central this year had lots of people selling steampunk gear. I've even had mundane relatives ask me about it -- apparently, there was some sort of museum exhibit in Denver recently that attracted a lot of steampunk fans, who went in garb. When your mundane relatives say, "Hey, I think I've heard of that, it's steampunk or something other?" That's a sign of penetration outside of geek circles.

There is a small but very elegant Sunday webcomic called ECTOPIARY. Only up to page 28 but Hans says he wants to make it around 600 pages. It is a creepy story set in a Victorian mansion in the 1950's. The Art ! ! !

I'm sticking with The Boys to the very end, one because I'm invested at this point, and two I actually like The Boys.
I picked up Crossed because I like Ennis, no other reason, and after two? issues...

(which one had the mother/father/baby being raped & cannibalized after the discovery that salt had no effect on the Crossed?)

...I was done. I'm usually a stickler. If I am interested enough to pick up a miniseries, I follow it through to the end. Ennis had finally gone too far for me, after loving Preacher, Hitman, The Boys, and many others.

In The Boys, he said he would "out-Preacher Preacher", but even then I find it not nearly as grotesque as Crossed, and I agree, almost pornographically so. At the same time, I applaud him for still doing what he wants to do, and keeping a fan base who loves him for it.

@megrar: I recommend Ennis' War Stories and Battlefield comics. They're just as good stories, but without the gratuity that may put you off something like Crossed or The Boys. Also, he works with some really top-notch artists for both series.

As a heads up to folks, jeroen23 was banned for trolling chat not once or twice but three times today. Even on a webclient like Mibbit, you're assigned an individual hostmask identifier so we can be reasonably confident when the same person signs in under different names as Jeroen tried to today. Had his contributions been more significant than "this is boring" or other low-level trollish maneuvers along with denying his previous trolling attempts he could've easily avoided this fate. I made a comic with Riley Rossmo (Dark Wolverine, Cowboy Ninja Viking, Green Wake) and I'm working on a few more with people like Ryan Sook, Ben Templesmith, Tyler Crook and so on. I'm doing my best to make comics that will be unlike anything else you've seen or read before.
