Re: Will's story - all contributors keep the rights to publish their work for Weaponizer elsewhere, so perhaps Will has it posted on another site?

The intention's to keep it open source, open to all, and most importantly free. For instance, one writer combined several stories into a novel he is now pitching, so I took them down at his request. It's a balance between online mag format (they usually charge) and something like Livejournal / Blogger that I was aiming for... a place for folks to see their work, and to get it seen by others. Thanks for checking it out.

I especially like Fran Frett-Hollinrake's works; but really almost everyone featured has more talent in a quarter of their brain than I do in my entire being. I'll keep this brief...

My fiction site, WEAPONIZER, has re-launched today:

There are, as mentioned on this thread before, a bunch of Whitechapel types writing for the site, all of whom have given me some brilliant work. Read all about the changes here.

Rather than posting a bunch of links, I'm going to ask anyone who is interested in fiction to please follow the WPNZR blog. I'll be adding all new content, and indeed all of the content from the last 18 months, to the RSS Feed, to make it easily searchable. Another advantage of following the blog - we're about to launch a sister site, Black Lantern Music, which will offer free downloads from a wealth of noise, dubstep, techno, electronica and hip-hop artists. We will add links to all of these downloads to the RSS Feed at WPNZR.

Highlights coming up -

Interviews with hip-hop geniuses Juice Aleem (up today), Anti-Pop Consortium and Thavius Beck.

Fiction from Dan Black, Will Couper, Will Ellwood, John Royal, ICAM and myself (to name but a few!).

Art and comics from a variety of talented individuals, starting with the awesome Andre Navarro, whose fantastic splash pages from the Splash Page Art Thread inspired me to start hosting comics and artwork on the front page.

Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for your support. The Whitechapel community is a continuing source of inspiration to me - it makes me really happy how many of you have either contributed to or supported Weaponizer. Okay, so the re-launch of Weaponizer has been a big success, and I have THOROUGHLY enjoyed reading all the new submissions from my fellow WCers. The biggest deal for me has been incorporating visual elements - we kicked off with a great 2-page splash art thingy from Andre Navarro, this month we've got Robin LeBlanc (oldhat) sharing a very beautiful photo she took. I'm currently looking at adding webcomics to the site as well, will keep you all posted on that.

Now we're on to the next phase, though - which is making the site look more sexy.

As such, I would like to announce the WEAPONIZER LOGO DESIGN CHALLENGE!

Our current logo is (fairly obviously) an image from the net, with some stock font-age. It's okay, but not great - it was always meant to be just a place-marker. I would like to get a new logo on the site - and I want one of you talented Whitechapel peeps to design it, if you're game.

What's in it for me, I hear you cry? Well, hopefully there would be some renumeration involved - I'm planning to start a CafePress store selling tees with the logo on, and whoever wins the challenge will of course get the lions share of the profits from any such sales. Also, I'll post all the entries on the blog, with links to your respective sites, so hopefully there will be a bit of cross-traffic for you. This is how it works - you license the logo to me under Creative Commons, but anything we use it on which makes money (tees, CDs, gigs, books, whatever) would give you a profit share (the details of which I can discuss with the winning entrant).

This is a WC-only thing at the moment - I've been so mightily impressed by the work done on the R/R and other art threads, that I really think this is the best place to look for a new logo. I'm not going to open it up to the general public unless you lot are completely uninterested in having a crack at it.

DESIGN BRIEF

I'm really into retro rayguns - but your design doesn't necessarily have to be one of these.

Things to avoid - real weapons (tanks, bombs, guns). Been there, done that - I'm much more interested in future / unlikely / fantasy weapons now.

Black and white preferably, or using a limited colour pallette (sticking with the orange / red / blues of the current logo where possible).

Nice stuff. Love the radioactive sign. Trying to borrow it and turn it into a W. Not working great yet. Here's a few tweaks to the first bunch I did making them more distressed, not sure how this'll work if the logo needs to end up vector based but I'm sure there's a way.

@ Dmitri - I love your design man. It reminds me of the DaVinci 'impossible vehicles' sketches.

@Yoav - loving the distressed textures of the fonts. The top one (b&w) looks great! I had to Google Vector Graphics... Nice that I can learn something as we go along here!

The final design will have to translate into a transparent image for use as a t-shirt... but that's a way off. For now, we just want something that will look great on the site.

Yup. Logos are good vector based as it has an endless resolution so that when you need to print the hanging banner to go off the Empire State building it will be perfectly crisp once printed.

right now it screams title covering up nice illo/graph to me.

perhaps go to the graveyard to frottage some gravestones scan those in and mixit up with Adobe Photoshop. (or your artgun of choice, ;)

@texture: I don't really do sigils As She Is Spoke - suggest you go old-skool on that and head out to some Austin Spare. (When I 'do magic', I prefer the fire-and-remember approach, rather than the fire-and-forget sigil methodology.) But hands-on basic teaching, that's doable. First, shields and other basics (or at least testing if you've experience there already).

@Fauxhammer - Ta! I agree totally about the Weaponizer benign ass-kick effect. Perhaps that's the Weapon under discussion? And feel free to give me a shout about anything you read of mine, at Weaponizer or Oddities and Mutterings - I can always use smart feedback

Thanks Oddcult.. That was the kick-starter for me, and I've watched the GM Disinfocon video and read the AO Spare stuff I can find online... was just wondering if there was further to take it, in terms of focusing will, obtaining more measurable results and so on. The of course there's servitor magic, which I've yet to experiment with... Anyway, looking forward to seeing where Cat takes his column... sure there's a lot I can learn. It's an area I'm interested in from both a practical and historical viewpoint, since reading The History of Magic, by Kurt Seligmann last year.

Another two Whitechapel natives have each started a big project on Weaponizer this week.

K Patrick Glover's new ongoing serialised novel BALE'S GAME has just gone up, go give it a read - it's a brilliant start to what promises to be an exciting noir crime thriller, to be updated ~~bi-weekly~~ fortnightly on Mondays from here on out.

BALE'S GAME - CHAPTER ONE - CLEARING THE BOARD

Earlier in the week, we also launched the mighty Fauxhammer's superbly creepy ongoing supernatural thriller, SHRIEKONOMICS.

SHRIEKONOMICS - CHAPTER ONE - THE BARGAIN

Fauxhammer's serial will be running ~~bi-weekly~~ fortnightly Tuesdays.

I hope you enjoy them! I think the guys have both come up with really intriguing protagonists and hook-filled premises... I'll say no more! I'm looking forward to seeing how these both prgress.

We're also looking forward to showcasing art by Veronika Von Volkova next month, and a whole host of Whitechapelers now write for the site... I'm so grateful for all your help and submissions folks. Once again, a big hearty shout out of thanks to Warren, Ariana, Paul, and everyone on the forum who make it such a creative and fulfilling place to be. It really is brilliant to have so many of you aboard over on Weaponizer. However, if I may borrow a phrase from Taphead, if this ever seems too much like a vanity thread, feel free to destroy with fire.

I'm putting together a quarterly magazine at the moment. It's super, super late, mainly because I've had to teach myself InDesign all over again. I'm nearing completion now - just after a few illustrations. We already have some great art and text from Mo Ali, Andre Navarro and a bunch more Whitechapelers, which is great - Weaponizer would not survive as a site (or indeed as a magazine) without you guys! What I am looking for now is some illustrations for stories that don't have any art yet. Is anyone up for contributing?

The first thing I need is a monster. Here's what it looks like:

"It resembled a balloon made of meat, expanding and contracting as if breathing. Long, vine-like veins became visible when its body swelled, the raw red flash stretched thin and pink. Its bottom was a writhing mass of red feelers ending in wicked bony barbs that grasped mindlessly around it."

Weaponizer is proud to announce the launch of its second and newest serialized graphic series, A Wicked Little Town, written by K. Patrick Glover with art by Keith Perkins.

A Wicked Little Town, which launches May 6th, is a black and white traditional-style murder mystery set in the old west with legends Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday taking on the role of detectives.

The series will be published on a weekly basis, with five-page installments appearing every Friday.

K. Patrick Glover is a Michigan-based writer of mystery and suspense. Much of his work has been published through Weaponizer including the serialized thriller Bale’s Game. No stranger to the comic world, Glover also had a regular column on comic book nostalgia on Hypergeek.ca and is the writer of the webcomic The Invisible Skein with artist Amanda Hayes. His first book, a collection of short fiction titled (Parenthetically Speaking) was released last year.

Keith Perkins is an artist living in Maine. His influences range from Cubism, Surrealism, Abstract Impressionism, Pop-Art and Impressionism to Graphic Design, Science Fiction, Poetry, Mythology, and Music. All of these influences combine to form an original personal expression of the modern world. Perkins’ art is an expression of his inner and outer life. Sometimes harsh, sometimes lush, always offbeat.

Weaponizer is a web and print magazine specializing in publishing a diverse range of short fiction, serials, comics and non-fiction. Based out of Scotland, Weaponizer is the brainchild of writer/editor/musician Bram Gieben and features a pool of regular contributors that met in part through Whitechapel, an online community hosted by comic book legend Warren Ellis.

Bit of a cry for help - the magazine is laid out, my InDesign spec matches the MagCloud template exactly, I've cecked and proofed all the text, links and positioning, but the PDF I am exporting to is still not uploading to MagCloud. Let me try to approach this as somebody who has no vested interest (I'll be grabbing three or four copies--one for my records, and/or the PDF edition, one for Eric for hooking me up with the interview, and one for me da, let me get that out there right now), and as somebody who's only seen the cover layout.

I think $17 is a perfectly fair value for the money. Were it a monthly, that'd be a different story, but once every three months, $17 is something I'd be willing to pay, assuming I knew the Weaponizer brand. Hell, people have been reading for free for a few years now; I think the mix of the physical object, the look of it (again, assuming it follows along with the look of the cover), and the amount of content, and the ratio of exclusive content is where it's at. I mean, look at COILHOUSE (which, granted, is put together by more people, all of whom have design and aesthetics as their main focus). People buy the magazine to have something to hold in the hand, to flip through at their leisure. You can get that content on the website, but there's still something about getting something in the mail, ripping into the envelope, and holding the thing. I think that's going to be a big draw.

Bottom line is, if you can translate web traffic into a paying customer base, you're golden, and if there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

Thanks guys. The decision is made - issue #1 will be $16.50 for a physical copy (with free digi copy), a digi copy (multi-platform) will be $4. I'm hoping this gives me enough of an idea of the size of a paying market to look at cheaper solutions for the August issue, and a pot from which to start paying contributors. Having recently learned the fate of Dodgem Logic, and looking at what other MagClouders are doing, I think this is the way to start.

Because of the price, I'll make sure everyone who contributed gets a free digital copy - it's the least I can do really. I was hoping to provide a free physical copy, but to do that I would have to invest hundreds of dollars upfront. Unfortunately, that is just not an option.

Design-wise, I definitely haven't got the skills to match Coilhouse, but I've had help from Cunabula, my little brother (a pro graphic designer) and Mike Rooth,all of whom have given me hints and tips... I'm extremely proud of the result, and I hope you guys like it too.

All being well, it will be ready for launch tomorrow. Thanks as always folks for your support and encouragement!

Yeah, I don't have an issue with the price generally, and it IS worth it. But as I told you on twitter, as someone who makes a grand total of $50 a week, most of which is spent on food, a toy that I've saved up for and whatever bills I can, spending that much is a bit of a big deal to me personally. And it does kill me to say that or even admit it.

I'm now commissioning content for the new Weaponizer Magazine. For those of you who missed the first one, it's still available. If you haven't seen the site before, we publish Fiction and other weirdness - we're coming back online for 2012 very shortly, after recruiting a few new editors. First things first though - I'd like to invite the denizens of Whitechapel to contribute to the magazine. The deadline is the end of February. I've emailed previous contributors, now I'm opening up the submissions to the talented folk who hang out here.

There are a few differences from the last time, let me go over them.

The magazine will be smaller - 46 pages of content not 76. This means the cover price will be lower, and I will be able to provide copies to all contributors in actual magazine form this time.

The interior is black and white - artists take note.

I will be selling copies hand to hand and via snail mail, so it's possible we can take it to some cons and zine fairs, and get it more widely read.

I will be paying contributors. It will be a token payment, and yet to be confirmed in terms of amount... but it will be a paid gig nonetheless.

The theme of this issue will be LITERATURE. Interpret how you will - but for nonfiction articles, basically it needs to have a slant on writing, publishing, ebooks, RPGs.... something to do with storytelling. No film or music pitches this issue please!

I already have some content commissioned, and spaces are filling up fast. So, here's what I am after:

WRITERS
I am looking for the following features / stories:

1 x article / interview (3000 words)
For this one - pitch me your idea before writing it. I'll give you a go ahead and confirm details.

3 x short stories (3000 words)
These don't necessarily have to relate to the 'Literature' theme although it may help you get chosen for print if your story does tie in. Send me finished drafts, I will review and choose the ones I want to publish.

6 x Flash (1200 words)
I've upped the traditional Flash limit to 1200, basically because it fits the page nicely. Again, these don't necessarily have to relate to the 'Literature' theme although it may help you get chosen for print if your story does tie in. Send me finished drafts, I will review and choose the ones I want to publish.

2 x comics
(4 page spread)
Any theme, any topic, as above... send me sample art, or a pitch, and we can discuss... I understand that sending me finished projects is not always viable,

**PLEASE NOTE**
This is super important.... I cannot accept fiction, articles or comics which have already been published elsewhere, including online / on your blog etc. This is because I'm submitting the magazine as part of a Universtity course. If your submission is published elsewhere I will have to turn it down. Sorry!

ARTISTS
All of the above articles will need illustrations. If you would like to contribute, please email me back to confirm this. I will then give you a list of options of stories to illustrate.

A note regarding payment
The payments will be one-off payments for artists and writers. They will be pretty small, I won't kid you.... this is essentially me starting from scratch, with a new format for everything... Nonetheless, paying people for commissioned content is something I want to do. I hope to be able to pay around £10 for long fiction and articles, £5 for flash, and £10 for artwork. This is not a guarantee that I can definitely pay these amounts, just a ballpark figure. However we will nail down a payment framework prior to the magazine being published. There may also be the option, like last time, of advertising your blog / ebook / website / whatever for free in the magazine. I will confirm all these details once I have the content commissioned. I know this is a bit slapdash - it would be better to tell you upfront what you will be paid. However because I'm using a new printer, new distro method, etc etc, I wont know final costs / payments until a bit later in the process.
