There was, way back in the mists of... 2007... a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as... people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response in various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving. I think most people's favourite was the dear late Mike Wieringo's wondrous retro-aristo Buck Rogers...

I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character.

Photography and digital art is also fine, before anyone asks.

    The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you, all the way from 1939: REX DEXTER OF MARS (HERE ON EARTH 2000):

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAHcough

I look forward to seeing what you come up with, but bear in mind this is an ART thread, and pen-portraits and other texts will be deleted. (And if you don't know what a pen-portrait is, go back to your school and insist that they provide you with a proper education.)

Damn you Ellis, I was laughing out loud at work reading the panel where Rex Dexter digs into the monster's brain!

This one is going to be tough because I don't want to change a damn thing.

I think the character could only be made better if all of his accessories were made HUGE. His collar should loom over his head and the disks on his helmet should extend to his shoulders.

Also, the Cynde character makes me snicker. I love how pulpy this thing is.

It's almost like these things were custom made for this thread. I'm already scared at some of the shit that will no doubt come from THIS one...

I like that the monsters have "Vital Brains"

As opposed to the not so vital ones.

The name Dexter though, I keep thinking of...

Is it too much to hope at least one of the versions has Rex and Cynde returning to Earth for revenge (bwa-ha-ha-ha...)?

I am surprised Mr. Ellis didn't explain the back story of the character - I figured something that cracky would be right up his alley.

For those who don't know (which, I imagine, would be just about everyone who reads it), Rex Dexter was the son of Montague Dexter, an scientist. When the 1939 World Fair came around, he used it as an opportunity to demonstrate his newest invention - an inter-planetary rocket ship. He and his wife boarded it and headed for Mars. But the ship broke down and crashed as soon as it reached it's destination. It took Montague 60 years to repair the ship. By that time, he was too old to fly it, so he entrusted the task to his young Martian-born son, Rex. The first few issues touched on Rex's culture shock at discovering an Earth that was much more advanced then the world his father left behind (with Cynde serving as his guide/potential love interest), but before long, he became yet another space adventurer living on the futuristic Earth.

Oh, and according to the early strips, in the year 2000, Europe is a wasteland devastated by "a terrific war that took place in the 1950s."

    Exactly.

I'm going to wait just a few more days untill inspiration hits me. I'll let it boil and brew and fester for a while first.

    Thanks, Warren!

I wonder how many entries are going to circle around the "digs into the vital brain" aspect. I suspect mine will.

Oh, this should be fun to draw/see what else you crazy fuckers come up with.

If I can stop laughing, I'll get down to drawing.

Huh. Well, it's weird because Rex has, like, five different outfits in that one single strip - which makes him less iconic. But he's certainly strange, and there is a lot to work with...

I like that he and his scientist friends want to swoop in on the cone planet before anybody else can get their grubby mitts on it.

In later years, Rex became a little too fond of the steroids.

*grumble*mumble* It's like this. I have an idea but it's far more in response to the Dark Angel and other lady character (the Robin Hood type). And I'm somewhat amused by it because I think the threads with women characters attract more interest/inspiration (R/R is way too new to be scientific about this observation). But I draw for utter and complete shit. My inspiration is in words or *maybe* staged - a play or film. Ideas rarely occur to me as images.

So ggrrr. Arrgh. I want to tell you about it but skip the pen portrait and...? *sigh*

Well I look forward to other people's input. And with this comment the thread will safely be in my "with me." Kick ass, guys.

Rex Dexter - The ONLY Man on Mars

Not much in the way of reinvention: only concession to modern comics is a "girlfriend-in-refridgerator"-style twist when, after being banished from Earth, Rex's ship crashes on Mars and his beloved Cynde perishes. With no way of getting home, Rex Dexter is now The Only Man On Mars. But is he as alone as he thinks...? And if he is, how long do we think it'll be before he turns that fancy ray-gun on himself?

God, there's a happy thought. You can tell it's Monday, can't you?

Tried to incorporate different elements of his THREE fancy costumes from Warren's scans into the space-suit. Might try something a bit more action-orientated later in the week.

(sorry about the rather unsubtle colouring - wanted to really signpost that he was holding the same newspaper page that's enlarged on the left)

(yes, they still have printed tabloid newspapers in the future. Yes, he's carrying it with him on the surface of Mars SHUTUPSHUTUP)

(also, I now understand why people don't use MS PAINT to edit and colour things)
