saw a preview screening last night, found it to be very dissappointing. i did like tghe bleak feel of it, but the story overall i thought was lackluster. anyone else see it yet?
He did the very eerie and haunting 'Devil's Backbone'.... del Toro really knows how to add mood and suspence to horror, unlike almost every American movie company that equates gore and CGI with 'spooky'.
I'm looking forward to seeing, but probably on dvd.
This is a very interesting horror movie, besides some "deja vu" things at its narrative structure (haunted houses, evil secrets at the deep of childhood and some stuffs like that). It's the first feature film from the director, Juan Antonio Bayona, and hits the Best Foreign Language Film Category (representing the Spain) of the 80th Annual Academy Awards (2008).
I have to say... I was not a fan of Pan's Labyrinth. It was either too weird or not weird enough. It just seemed that in places there wasn't enough there to be truly fantastic or truly realistic. Am I alone here?
A mate of mine saw a preview of this at last year's Frightfest, and called it his favourite film of the weekend. There's a moment in it that had the whole cinema up out of their seats in shock. Bear in mind this is a cinema full of horror fans, too. I'm really looking forward to it.
I'm spanish..so i had no problems to watch it. I liked it...buuuut it's really overrrated. The best part is the direction of the film...the script is not bad, but not very original either, and the last 5 minutes or so are just junk that should have be cutted.
I'll recommend you [REC], another spanish horror movie..it has it's flaws too but it's much more exciting.
And even better..."The time crimes" from Nacho Vigalondo, soon to be remaked by hollywood...check the original if you can, Sci Fi at it's best (meaning that one when you don't have a big budget and you have to bring ideas instead of money")
You know, if you can mostly understand Spanish I think you should try and watch it without the subs. There's a lot of stuff that gets kinda lost in the translation. I thought it was much better w/out the subs.
