@jasonarthur - You list Failure as an influence. For that, I thank you. Sometimes, I fear I'm the only one with a copy of Fantastic Planet.

I'm in Your Favorite Assassin. I used to say we were punk. Then, I said we were post-hardcore and I guess that label may still apply, but we keep doing pretty stuff like this now, so I don't know anymore:
Fiend

This is a pre-mastered version of "Fiend" off our album that's coming out in a couple months. I love this song so much, I almost forget I play on it.

We're on MySpace and Facebook and Flickr, in case you need to see how attractive we are.

Pink Noise Inferno is an audio project of mine that's supposed to gather all of my audio creations under a single name. Been making music since 1997, never really released anything (kind of an "outsider artist" thing if I think about it) and used a myriad names for this stuff. there have been some files floating around the web and my friends, a few demo tapes in 2000-2002 period but nothing proper.

Currently sort of working (sort of slacking rather) on a boxset that's supposed to collect all of my 400+ tracks in either mp3 or ogg.

The music itself? Umm, hard to decribe. I went through various phases doing genre mashups and what not. It basically goes through industrial, techno, experimental, noise, dark ambient, ambient, drone, silly tunes, hardcore and basically anything electronic. I don't really have much to show online at this point, only an old myspace from when I used the name "Din Krakatau" for one of my sub-projects (abandoned by me but it's still up so you can listen), and a test video on youtube assembled quickly to one of my tracks by a friend of mine. Both feature the more "indutrialish" side of my music.

Here goes the vid (which is a track from 2007 I think)
Pink Noise Inferno - Passive Agressive

and here's the abandoned myspace which has some remastered tracks from early 2000's (under the abandoned name).

Since this is showing only a small range of the project, I'll probably put up something more in a while (whenever I can get around looking through nearly 500 tracks).

I just now, as in 5 minutes ago, put up all new (old) songs on my Myspace Music page. It's all weird original rap and some remix tracks that I recorded over a few year period in the early 2000's. Most of anything older is lost, and anything newer is sitting on my computer in non-MP3 form, so I've just had my semi-old stuff on my page.

Here's the link (sorry, but I don't know how to make it clickable...):

www.myspace.com/frerquentcontributor

Of the tracks I just updated with, one (Lonlier) is an account of me losing my virginity, sung in the style of Tom Waits (although Buck 65 was more the reason I did it, at the time...), who I naturally sound nothing like, featuring samples from both Tom Waits and Dizzy Gillespie. It's rough and bad and embarassing, but some of the lyrics still hold up, and besides the mediocre-quality audio, the melody is pretty hypnotic (although it IS a sample...).

That, and all the music on there was made with a Playstation 1 and a copy of MTV Music Generator.

Try it. I'm not selling anything.

The Cryptomusicology Kit - Now Available

A couple years ago I intended to release a double-CD collection (called "Cryptomusicology") of all my surviving music from about 1978-1990. I did some work on that project, but decided - based on my experience with these things - that I didn't really want to wind up with a closet full of them. And, I decided I was too cheap to set up a website and sell downloads, though that might still happen.

Instead, I'm offering a single CD of mp3s and artwork. Musically, it includes everything I thought I was going to put on the CDs, and even more (since I've recovered some more archival material in the meantime). Since the content on the disc is the important thing to me, the packaging is the most excruciatingly simplistic DIY production imaginable.

This is over 30 tracks of experimental and twisted electronic pop music - a world of tape loops, abused guitars, and cheap synthesizers - and one indescribable Fortean sci-fi spoken-word epic, with and a little artwork and liner notes you could use to recreate the double-CD yourself. If you're so inclined.

It's $12 inc postage (within the US), or $15 (outside the US). Email brentwilcox@yahoo.com if you're interested.

One of last week's wave of songwriting, given quickie form:
Do You Remember

Working on a string part for it (ideally cello and violin) to fill it out and have something in the middle and end bits. Also all that "eeee-eee-ee-eee" at the end is filler for the hypothetical violin. But I thought I'd throw this base version up on the internet for perusal.

Edit: mixed a little better now, and finally figured out how to do level automation in logic so I could fade out the ending until such time as it is filled with proper non-boring musics.

What I've been doing recently is trying to produce and release a new song every week on my blogspot site:

Birds Use Stars

Mostly because by the time I finished enough songs in a row for a demo, I was already sick of it and working on something new. Of course, labels don't accept links to mp3s 99% of the time, but I'm not known for thinking too far into things. Better to finish tracks and put them up anyway rather than sitting on a hard drive.

For the first time online, I've posted the entirety of my 1987 epic "The 'Pops' Science Story" in four parts on MySpace.

A lo-fi mix of Casio samplers, guitar noise, abused drum machines, tape loops and a sci-fi narrative torn from the pages of the Weekly World News and Fortean Times, with fake news broadcasts over a bed of experimental noise. I produced it in a weeklong creative fugue on a four-track cassette deck, I released it on cassette as an "audio comic". (And 128 kbps MP3 is not much of a loss) I guarantee you've never heard anything like it.

I think it's held up pretty well over 20 years.

Figured it should have been a cult classic by now... Brian Eno liked it, called it "strangely addictive" and bought a copy for his daughter working at the BBC. Steven Grant always mentions it fondly. But I think I sold maybe a half-dozen copies over all.

The Copyright Office called me when I submitted it - they wanted to know how to categorize it.

I always wanted to release it in illustrated form... at one point imagining a rough, asymetrical, Ted McKeeverish look.

Anyway, it's strange and unique and you can hear the entire thing now.

Here

It is relatively easy to take a whole clip out of a song and sample/repeat it in Garage Band. It gets much more complicated (a.k.a. nigh impossible, at least with GB) to extract an individual track... say you've got a segment of drum/clap/synth from Safety Dance, and want to dump the synth bit and keep the drums/clap. Once it's bounced down to a single album track it's all one animal, and not designed to be separated. If it's a stereo track you can extract just the left or just the right, but not just the guitar or just the vocals.

you just need to find a clean solo of the bit you want. like a drum fill where the other instruments have dropped out. like izenmania says you can't (easily) remove other instruments from samples as it's all part and parcel of the mix but once you have found the individual sounds you want any sound editing software will easily allow you to build a tune from the individual samples you've made. Audacity is very easy to use for taking samples and for editing them together and it's free. Acid is also good but you'll have to 'find' a copy or pay a lot for it.

it takes a bit of work but can be good fun when it comes together. this link is for a couple of tracks i did a year or so ago just for the hell of doing something utterly different from my usual music.

In Garage Band I believe you can just drag and drop an audio file into an empty track and edit it down from there, but if not there ought to be an import function to pull it in. (I haven't used GB in about a year, so I'm a little rusty on it)

Warren posting some EVP stuff reminded me of an ancient track put together in a dank Cornish bedsit when I was drinking too much and not going out with girls.
It was made exclusively from EVP recordings ( hence the lack of a tune ) and is a miserable old thing. But it was fun remembering the hours of turmoil and absinthe-led cutting and pasting that led to its creation , so I stuck it on Youtube.

We just released a compilation CD with multiple tracks by four artists and you can listen to some of them here: http://www.myspace.com/carbonironrecords

The idea behind C/Fe is primarily one of class and electronic experimentation and it shows in all the artists music.

The featured artists for this compilation are:
AllThisIsMeaningless - Houston, TX and sometimes Seoul, Korea
The Still Lifes - New Zealand
MusiM - Tulsa, OK
deciBel - Tulsa, OK

Unfortunately we just got the hardcopies are not setup to order from online yet (to my knowledge at least) but we will be soon. The CD is $10. We are still working on our online presence so hopefully we will have something better than a myspace to link to soon as well.

I've been living in Japan for a couple of years, but I'm coming back to the old country for the first time soon and my old band (who I kind of left in the lurch) have arranged a one off "reunion" gig because they're awesome. So if you're in the Birmingham UK or the Midlands UK please come out to see the "Rock Music"

Devil and Casey Jones one off reunion show!

Date: Saturday, November 7, 2009
Time: 7:30pm - 11:00pm
Location: The Red Lion
Street: Warstone Lane
City/Town: Birmingham, United Kingdom

We'll be giving away free copies of the last album we recorded before I skipped town, but everything we did is already free to download from our intentionally shitty website www.dacj.com. I say intentionally shitty, I believe the guitarist made it like that on purpose. Looking at it, I'm happy to see that's actually quite a lot of music - three albums, a bunch of EPs and other random stuff that we used to sell at our shows. Good grief. The best stuff is the latest stuff I would say.

Here's a couple of tracks:

We have a myspace page of course. Who knows I might even make more music with those guys.

In the meantime I'm currently working on a bunch of solo stuff and occasionally making music as a kind of primitive stompy partly improvised duo (trio?) called Captain the Parrot:

And looking for new bands to start and new trouble to get in.

Is anyone doing POD for music?

I was checking out Lulu and the CD options look pretty anemic. Just a 2 page booket and they don't allow package deals with their items i.e. book, cd and mp3s all sold together. I'm no great lover of CDs, but I like the idea of a giving out a physical product.

While trying to come up with a better idea I read the Lulu forums - it sounds like you can send links with an automated "thank you" email after a purchase. I was thinking of making two zip files one with v0 mp3 and one with flac or wav and sending links if someone bought a 20 page(or so) photo book. The photo book could be filled with art, lyrics, and so on.

It appears that you can store files in a personal folder on Lulu and once you give out a link anyone can use those files. Unfortunately, I don't think you can customize a storefront look for a personal page. A setup like that feels a bit cheap and hacky. I dunno.

The photo books are interesting. No 12x12 like vinyl, but at least you can go bigger than the 5x5 of CDs. 8.5x8.5 would be pretty swell. The downsides I see are that it can't be less than 20 pages, white paper only, and just white or black on the back cover. Saddle stitch books are also an option they are even cheaper and can have less than 20 pages. Not sure how nice the paper is though.

Paying for digital downloads never feels very satisfying. A DVD filled with mp3s and flac and wav might be cool too, but the lack of an option for a substantial booklet is a real turn off.

Anyway. Any better POD sites to look at? How is Cafepress?

Jonah, you've described exactly what I'm working on at the moment.

I'm going for a 100 page pocket sized companion object to a double album - one part of the album wil be a free download, the second "shadow" album will come with the book. I have the music mostly done and I'm currently working on the content of the book. I looked at a few options for printing it and Lulu won for brand recognition and quality. What gave them the edge overall though is that Lulu books show up on Amazon, I sell music though Amazon so - done.

Amazon also have a CD on demand service you can untilise through Tunecore. Good thing = you get a CD listed on Amazon. Bad thing = you have to use Amazon's CD template. You get your cover art but the rest of the package is from one of the 8 templates Amazon offer. Granted, this is shit, but if you work with it rather than fight it you can get an acceptable result.

My band The Secretions has 5 CDs out, but we don't talk about the first one, luckily for me it's out of print now, as are the second and third, but hopefully that will change next year as we are releasing the second and third on a two-for-the-price-of-one-cd kind of deal. The latest one is shown above, I'm fairly proud of it, give it a listen. Due to some freakishly lucky digital distro deal we are available for digital preview and purchase pretty much anywhere (myspace/itunes etc), but if you want a hard copy go to Interpunk.com. Interpunk also has all of our vinyl releases if like prefer your music more in the analogue style.

We are currently trying to plan a summer US tour but nothing is solid yet. We are too broke to go to Europe probably ever, maybe someday it will happen.

Also look up Secretions on youtube, there are some pretty funny videos of us. I'm the freakishly tall blond billy-idol-lookin one with gorilla arms that yells a lot.

Erm, even though I don't show up here often, I thought I'd shamelessly plug myself.

Hi there! Josh "No Relation" Ellis here. I have a band (in much the way Trent Reznor has a "band") called Red State Soundsystem. We recently released our first album, Ghosts In A Burning City. Early reviews have compared it quite often to Peter Gabriel, Thom Yorke's solo work, and one of my favorite comparisons: "A cross between Paul Simon and Nine Inch Nails". It's sort of electronic rock, with the occasional dip into alt.country, dub, and glitchy trip-hop. All very lyrical (except the two instrumental tracks.) I'm very proud of it.

You can stream the whole album here and buy it for $10 in Yankee money here. (You can also buy it on iTunes and Amazon MP3, but if you buy it directly from our site, we keep all the money.)

I'm also looking for people who'd be interested in doing remixes -- I've got most of the tracks as stems, if anybody's interested.

End shameless plug.

Back in the mists of time - and I mean, positively the Stone Age, I was in a band whilst at Art School in the early 90's. We were trying to decide on a name when we saw on a billboard "The boys from the detachment are back". This appealed to us, our sense of alienation from the University life, and mainstream music as a whole.

Fucked about, got drunk a lot, played a couple of gigs, put out a couple of EPs on cassette, even had a groupie (!) and after Uni it slowly fell apart. The Other Half was back up in Hull, I was back in London which made things difficult to co-ordinate. Of course, thanks to The Internet and such things as Technology, it'd be a piece of piss nowadays to simply ship files back and forwards. (Sorry if I'm stating the obvious but I'm coming to this from a non-professional stance) Even buying a $1 mic on Ebay from Singapore and sampling stuff onto a Mac Mini, and sequencing this and virtual synths, effects pedals...

In Hull, in 1992, this was the wildest, hairiest dream imaginable. We were improvising ugly sonic collages and soundscapes with overdubs on a 4-track, an Amiga and a handful of cheap analogue pedals and guitars. REALLY cheap and nasty stuff.

And that's just the production logistics.

Anyway, I spent some time at the arse-end of last year playing around with LogicPro and seeing what came out. I feel like it's better than the worst stuff I've ever heard, and certainly better than the stuff I put out in 1993 so I'm rather pleased at that. I'm in the process of sending the work files to my Other Half to see what his twisted and now paternal mind can come up with.

Ladies and Gentlemen, The Boys From The Detachment Are BACK!

Where you can download the rough versions as a Zip file.

(I'll get 'round to knocking out a cover image for this soon, I think, and once MikeD finishes his tinkering, maybe shopping it around some micro labels. Suggestions welcome.)
