The rules are very simple.

* Don't Be An Arsehole.

Being an arsehole may get you cautioned. It may get you suspended. It may get you locked out. These punishments will be delivered randomly, haphazardly, ruthlessly and sometimes without any warning. It will totally depend on whether or not I've had enough caffeine and nicotine. Arse Eels may be involved. When in doubt: just don't be an arsehole. If you don't know how not to be an arsehole? Ask a grown-up. Straight up: if you can't spend time on the web without abusing other people or generally fucking with things, you're going to get bounced out of here pretty sharpish. Okay?

* Don't Come Here Just To Argue.

It is boring to me. When Ariana or I tell you to shut up? It's time to shut up now.

* You Own Your Own Words.

Seriously. I mean, don't even think about complaining about that.

It makes the place a legal minefield. I don't have a problem with fan art, but fan fiction creates difficulties for me and any other pro writer visiting. This is not up for discussion. I refer you to Arse Eels above, yes?

And that's about it, really. You may run free, my children. Stick to the intent of each Category when you're posting. If what you've got doesn't fit any category, or doesn't fit anyone's concept of sanity, then into London Zoo it goes, and you can take your chances in the swamp there. God only knows what'll end up growing in that place.

Speak for yourself. In my day-to-day, I'm just as anonymous as I am here on the
internet. There's no fiction in the fact that I'm beneath notice where-ever I am.
The simple fact is, some of us would rather lurk and be left to our devises while
still maintaining some connection with the outside world (so that we know what
to say to the cashier at the grocery without scaring him). If I could ably and
convincingly pretend to be someone else, I would. I'm *that* interesting. My
main point here: the internet is full of fanboys and assholes who are fully
and stubbornly convinced they *are* the next Warren Ellis, they gave Brian K.
Vaughn all of their best ideas, and that Steven Niles owes them royalties for
stealing their idea to do a movie about vampires and snow. These people
sound harmless, but sadly infinite time (and in some cases, a fat wallet) can do
criminally stupid things to people's brains. They will, in fact, sue your ass for
having two cheeks, and file a civil lawsuit against the half that turned in pity.
Not all of us are content being anonymous drones. There are people who would
do anything to be noticed for five minutes, including ruining someone's career.
Then there are the truly delusional 'you read my mind and picked it clean' people..

geeksofdoom: On my site we only have a variation of the first rule (ours is "don't be a dick"). It's been surprisingly effective with only a few people getting banned in nine years. Which is good because, you know, arse eels are expensive; we could never afford them.

A question, not that I'm arguing against the rule (and apologies for being thick).

I've seen the 'no fiction' rule on a lot of message boards and I understand that this is so that some nutter doesn't try claiming that someone stole their ideas.

i.e Mr Ellis writes a comic about a dyslexic atheistic teddy-bear, someone tries suing him citing the 'fact' that they wrote such an idea elsewhere.

But how does an internet forum differ legally from work that someone has published elsewhere (fan fiction, own website or book)? How does this defend people against a random nutter claiming that a published work doesn't come from their own site?

Is it just because there is no way you can defend against not seeing something written on your own message board?

I like Rule #1. A lot. It's quite similar to the two-law legal system I've been pushing for [(1) Thou shalt not be a shit cunt; (2) Thou shalt be a good cunt].

On the fan-fiction line; no problems there. However, I wonder if a more entertaining approach would be to allow it, but make it part of the terms of service that all fictional works posted on here become the property of the board owners. Ergo, if said nutter tries to sue you, well, one, he can't, and, two, you could probably counter-claim for him stealing your IP (even though it was originally his).

...probably not worth the time though. Really not worth the time. Or the server space, because, really, let's be honest here: Most fan fiction is appalling.

A couple of questions regarding ettiquette. Apologies if they sound a bit retarded, but this is the first place I've actually contributed to rather than just lurked on.

Firstly, to what extent is it acceptable to bring up subjects or topics that may divert a thread from its original purpose? Is it ok to fill up a thread with side conversations that might only be loosley related to the original subject matter?

Secondly, is there an acceptable limit to how many threads I should be posting on at any one time, or how many new threads I should be starting myself? I don't want to be the 'net equivalent of the noisy, hyperactive kid that some parent's bought to a grown up party.

God help me, I'm becoming more like Larry David by the day.

I'll field that one since no one else has. I'm no authority, but I've been lurking in InternetJesus' forums since back in the WEF days.

1.] If the topic diverts, Warren or one of his beautiful & intelligent Assistants may 'Sink' the thread. In some cases (annoying threads; threads featuring unpublished material) threads may be 'Closed' outright. Wandering off-topic is acceptable if the conversation manages to circle back or evolve the thread to something better than it was. Additionally, threads may be moved to other categories if it turns out it's better suited. For instance, a thread titled 'Hellboy' in the Printheads category that turns out to be about the movie sequel may end up being moved to 'Art & Noise'.

2.] As for posting new threads, it's a matter of self-restraint and etiquette. I wouldn't necessarily start multiple threads in the same category in one day. It's a no-brainer, but I have to say it: look for a related thread first. If there isn't one, go for it.

I would also point out that hyperactive children that do appear on the forum are dealt with swiftly, and relatively fairly. You'll see it on occasion, and you'll know it when you see it. As long as you converse like an intelligent adult, and observe simple manners like an intelligent adult, you shouldn't have to be concerned. If you do have some concern for whatever reason, know that Warren- in my limited experience- does give fair warning, albeit only once (twice if you're lucky).

I don't plan on taking credit for her work, as that's not a particularly friendly thing to do, and it would be a bit suspicious if I, who have never contributed to any art thread before, suddenly started posting amazing art.

Just read your thoughts on recommending comics and was wondering - provided we play but the Rules, might we start a thread to recommend over-looked comics or OGNs to new readers? A short, short story with a valuable lesson:

Sometime ago, I was on the Warren Ellis Forum--I made a post in response to someone. I thought I was being funny, clever, not annoying whatsoever. One of Warren's wonderful mods politely and graciously informed me of how wrong I was in my assumptions, and gave me the chance to self-edit or remove my post, so I did.

Later, on The Engine, I said something in a post that Warren objected to, and IP-banned me. Closed me out of the forum. I apologised and politely asked if he might reconsider. He didn't so much as respond--fair enough, since i already crapped in his house once, I didn't expect anything different.

I certainly didn't expect to miss the forum as much as I did. You know the countless times someone on here has said something akin to "only here can we find something like this?" Warren, bless his grace and patience, erects these places on the internet, knowing full well after years of doing this sorta thing, just what to expect.

Until you get closed out, until you see that one forum thread that you really, really wish you could respond to/add to, you really have no idea what you had 'til it's gone.

Don't push their buttons, because they have their fingers hovering above the only button that really matters: the BIG, red button marked "BAN" or "OFF" depending on their mood.

And when you think Warren is joking about the measures he'll take? He isn't. He's not known for his bluffing.

I've tested the waters a bit here to see what's allowed in terms of frivolity, and I've found Mr. Ellis & Co. to be pretty supremely tolerant. So far it seems that I've found the following to be true:

1. Before posting a thread or comment, stop and think, "Is this 4chan? Am I just posting this for teh lulz?"

So, I'm not sure who to politely question...
Warren mentioned that the SINK tags was for threads that bore him, and thus they would slowly fade away.
When Ariana put the SINK tag on the DRAW EACH OTHER thread, she said it wasn't to get rid of it, just to make room for newer threads.
Now it's gone. I'm a little confused, and a little disappointed. Also, on the bottom it mentions "this thread has been inactive for 5 days and doesn't want to be ressurected," with the last comment one day ago...
Is it really gone, or is this a mistake? I really liked that thread, and clearly a lot of other people did, too.
I know there are other Artist Threads, but this one had a specific purpose, and was personally a real draw (no pun intended) to this forum. Also, I would imagine, a real source of pride for GREASEMONKEY for starting such a successful thread. So, politely, WTF?
Not sure how else to communicate to Those That Make Decisions.

I don't generally get involved in the political threads of debate and discussion even though i would browse them in curiosity of others opinions or what they do for the sake of their beliefs. I certainly noticed the most recent one was understandably closed.

Nonetheless, I'm aware of a peaceful protest rally being quickly organized in Boston (peaceful gathering permit pending) to show support of a Pubic Health Care option day.

This is actually a really good example of why it's not a good idea to start an even thread until, you know, closer to the event. Even threads that don't auto-lock often get buried and forgotten when they're posted months out. Why don't you start a new roll-call thread the actual week of the convention since, honestly, there's sure to be people that don't even know if they're going yet, especially during tax-return season.

Just a suggestion: After having noticed the absurd amount of posts attached to THE RULES, and wading through 16 pages of comments on THE RULES, including essential repetition of the same questions (and an alarming obsession with eels), I'm just wondering if it'd make sense to separate THE RULES from the questions by creating a FAQ section?

THE RULES could simply list the rules (which, let's face it, are fairly straight forward) without all the clutter. While the FAQ section could cover all the other bits and pieces, many of which could be (and have been in this thread) fielded by other WHITECHAPEL folk who know the correct answer. Then, if people read the FAQs first, this thread could be less than 16 pages long, especially when you consider how little space the rules actually take up.

I also propose a blanket ban on "why was my thread canceled?" as a legitimate question, a moratorium on questioning THE RULES (there's only 5 and they're noy confusing!) and suggest the first post in FAQ be "If YOU think you have reason to question if you're being an arse-hole, perhaps you should re-think your post". I know it's not an actual question but valid, nevertheless.

Odds are you've probably considered this already, but I've not seen any other mention of it.

@Warren and Ariana ... at the risk of an arse eeling, I was wondering ... would there be room for a "Best of Whitechapel" thread? Kind of as an adjunct to "The Rules" and "How to use Whitechapel". It would be a place to house threads that worked, threads that didn't work and threads that never should have been created in the first place. You know, for new people to go through and see for themselves that we've had umpteen threads about "Your First Comic" or the various Zombie Apocalypse threads. I have just read through this thread 'completely' for the first time. Before I ever posted I read the first couple of pages. Now I have read the whole thread. The RULES are easy to understand, no complaints. Still there is more A-kissing in this thread than I am comfortable with. Maybe it's the price of fame and a damn good community online. Apologies if this is offensive, still I believe in a challenges to group think.

I started my first thread about dreams. I am interested in seeing it continue despite a stopped thread in the past. I have read that thread now, it was stopped for a good reason. I perhaps do not post enough (so far)to direct that thread, though I will attempt to step up and read and post daily, maybe I should take responsibility for what I have started.

I am looking for positive direction from the bosses here. I have started to identify with this community and will appreciate assitance in making this work.

What is the rule about pictures with weapons? (I looked around but didnt't find one) I had posted one of me in uniform, armed, and didn't know it was a problem, I was going to post one from my upcoming training day exercises, but should I skip that?

It's my fault. I collect knives. I was making a comment on being extra careful. But I was careless with a sharp blade and nicked myself. It was a before and after shot. I thought I had dreamt posting the images the first time.

I know the comment was directed towards you, I guess I'm asking for clarification? Meaning, in one picture, I have a weapon holstered, and I guess that's okay? And somebody's FUCKRBEATR stick is okay, but would a pic from my training class where we're firing AR-15's be ok? Or an artsy pic with me and my Indiana Jones gun? Or is it that a few slipped through and it's Zero Tolerance? Before I post anything wepon related in the future, I want to understand the rules clearly, so I don't break the rule unintentionally.

Fair enough, the consequences there in the SPIT were mine though. Something could have happened locally in the UK or even globally that have raised sensitivity to 'weaponry'.

For the record, all my gun-like objects are airsoft or noisemakers, and one was a squirt gun. I use them as props.

Let me be completely blunt: when I am aware that certain people here have certain medical issues, and I see them posting images of themselves posing with weaponry, I am going to delete them, so that Avatar Press do not have to deal with the inevitable CNN "and here we see the person posing on a message board with weaponry" story.

Mostly because no one was interested any of the FOUR times you posted it, and if they had it would have probably been the same wank that the "who should play who in the movie" threads are. Warren and I have been doing this a while, sometimes we preemptively sweep clutter.

More to point: if a thread disappears, the solution is not to just keep reposting it until it sticks. This time I let it stay in the blogs because I was busy. Next time I'm silencing your account for a while.
