Having a shit day ("Why I'd love a 2 hour meeting about nothing" fuckers) and on lunch all but dove for the ipod to call up some music to clear my skull. Top of my playlist
The Hours: Ali in the Jungle (Different, and better, video here)
Fantastic Plastic Machine: Theme of Luxury
Warren Zevon: Lawyers Guns and Money
Gets the blood moving again. Feeling less stabby. What music saves your sanity? What do you turn to when the urge to call in an airstrike is overwhelming, or you just need to feel HUMAN again?
Most of the music I listen to makes me feel MORE like firebombing. However, if I need to "cool off" it's usually NIN's Ghosts, Eno's Music for Airports, or something else suitably mellow. Beck's middle albums usually soothe fairly well, also. And maybe Bright Eyes' I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.
Of course, if I'm liking the stabby feeling, I'll usually go with Acid Bath, Slayer, At the Gates, or Strapping Young Lad.
edited to add: Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees" on loop.
Rolling Stones -Citadel Stooges - Search and Destroy Nick Cave-Deanna Pogues - Streams of Whiskey Einsturzende Neubauten - was lst lst Bob Dylan - Bringing it All back Home - like the whole fucking Record twice
Slayer - Raining Blood Chris Cornell - You Know My Name Boom Boom Satellites - Shut Up and Explode AC/DC - Hell's Bells Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter Marilyn Manson - Highway to Hell Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London
Finally, nothing feels better than playing every Iggy & the Stooges song at eyeball-rupturing volume. Rough Power in particular. For relaxing, there's Goldfrapp and Portishead.
That Front 242 video caused the 1990's equivalent of an acid flashback.
I nearly forgot about Danzig. Really, I'd be fine with just Iggy and Danzig playing nonstop. Nothing wakes me up like Search and Destroy with a Five Finger Crawl chaser.
Okay... To embrace the stabbity probably 3 Inches of Blood... nothing better than shrieking nerds. For complete stabbity pleasure probably City or Strapping Young Lad by Strapping Young Lad
To turn stabbity into happity something like The Hellacopters or Turbonegro, maybe Gluecifer
For mellowing out that stabbity mood Accelerated Evolution by The Devin Townsend Band... Yes I am a fanboy and pimp for the Dev.
Sometimes Emperor is good too. They tend to cover a wide range of emotion for me.
lets see. Theese songs get me buzzing as opposed to totally headbanging crazy.
This one has been getting me pumping for the last 3 months. Ah the good ol' E chord song as done by old Mould himself. I love it when it kicks in on the 1st chorus.
Jesus Built My Hot Rod - Ministry Go With The Flow - Queens of the Stone Age Ugly - The Stranglers Mid Life Crisis - Faith No More Duality - Slipknot London Calling - The Clash Ty Cobb - Soundgarden
Once Around the Block - Badly Drawn Boy never fails to cheer me up.
But, if I want to blow off a little steam (don't tell anyone, guilty pleasure) there's nothing that beats the cheesy early aughts breakdown hardcore of Evergreen Terrace's Burned Alive by Time record. Good God I hate that I love it.
This is the song that got me into punk rock. It still does it for me.
A couple others that have been known to get me up and shouting.
Mischief Brew - Roll Me Through the Gates of Hell
The World/Inferno Friendship Society - Addicted to Bad Ideas
Bomb the Music Industry! - Even Winning Feels Bad
And Off With Their Heads - Die Today, which manages to cheer me up despite the horribly depressing lyrics.
None More Black - Oh, There's Legwork
A few other anthems that stir the soul: Dear Landlord - Three to the Beach, The Copyrights - Shit's Fucked, Cock Sparrer - Watch Your Back, Against Me! - TSR, Screeching Weasel - I Wanna Be A Homosexual, Gaslight Anthem - Say I Won't Recognise, The Hold Steady - Most People are DJs, The Vindictives - Assembly Line, Two Gallants – Las Cruces Jail, Crimpshrine - Fucked Up Kid, American Steel - Smile On Me, Jason Webley - There's Not A Step We Can Take That Does Not Bring Us Closer, Good Luck – Stars Were Exploding, Bent Outta Shape – Stray Dog Town, The Distillers - I Am A Revenant, Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road, The Bananas – New Animals, Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains – The Politics of "Oh shit, I just cut my hand open on a broken beer bottle", Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Little Dawn. I could go on.
As you might be able to tell, most of my favourite songs fall under this category. Including the one that spawned my username.
You had me at "Lawyers, Guns and Money." You have to leave the rest of us something else good, man! That's the best one.
I always mentally begin my day with the theme to "The Sopranos" - whatever it is called. I always imagine this is my soundtrack while driving in the morning.
In no other order, songs that I am unrepentantly fist-pumping about - total anthem songs, car-driving shower-singing etc: (Noticeably skewed towards recent stuff)
The Prodigy, "Smack My Bitch Up" Pink Floyd, "Run Like Hell" Ministry, "Stigmata" (How'd you guess?) Prick, "No Fair Fights" Moby, "Bodyrocking" Low-Fi Allstars, "Battleflag" Flobots, "Handlebars" TaTU, "Not Gonna Get Us" Tom Waits, the train song Faithless, "Mass Destruction" Queen - lots of stuff by Queen, really. Gnarles Barkley, "Just A Thought" "Run Lola Run" - the soundtrack, but esp. "Running III" Indigo Girls, "Kid Fears" The Libertines, "What a Waster", "Can't Stand Me Now," "The Likely Lads", "Campaign of Hate" The Ramones, "I Wanna Be Sedated", various Violent Femmes - "Add It Up" KLF, "Justified and Ancient (with Miss Tammy Wynette)" Big Black, "Fish Fry" Meat Beat Manifesto, "Acid Again" Dengue Fever, "One Thousand Tears of a Tarantula" or "Sober Driver," depending on the occasion.
Special number one hate pumping song for anger-filled occasions: Silverfish, "Fuckin' Strange Way to Get Attention"
