Art exercise - post your picture and we'll all draw your portrait in any style we like. Anything goes, from stick figures to cartoons, to poster art, to steampunk, to Old Master portraits in richly gilded frames. With the depth of talent and humour evident here, and the omnipresent "Don't Be An Arsehole" principle in force, I think we can keep the lurkers entertained.

So I don't mark myself as a gigantic wanker who just wants everyone to draw pictures of him for free, I'll hold back posting my own mugshot until the thread reaches its third page.

Okay, I'll bite:

It's as accurate as any pic I have at hand - I dress in black, my hair does tend to lay like that, and my beard actually extends along the jawline and up, only it's all gray. And I hardly ever smile in a public restroom....

Here's my attempt at keighter's first picture. The closest thing to this that I've ever done is a bit of texturing for various mods, and I found the eyes and face pretty challenging, even after I borrowed a friend's tablet. Still, I'm fairly pleased for an hour or so's work.

Eh, I should clarify my "speediness".

Truthfully? With the greatest of ease.

This corset was custom made, and I find it enormously comfortable.
I actually use it sometimes - under the advisement of my physiotherapist - as a back brace.

Caveats:
1 - I do not lace it as tight as one would if corset training.
2 - It is merely a waist cinch. This means it ends below my breasts as opposed to binding all the way up my torso.

But anyhow ... I meant that the thread is fun.

This was a tough one. I loved the expression in her photo, but man, it was so tough to translate the subtleties of the expression. It was good practice for me, though. I've been blowing off really drawing from what I see.

Funny stuff, friend! I love your quick, loosey lines. The "Vanessa Robot" one cracked me up.

Hmmm, I don't really have any tutorials specifically, but the Vanessa picture was penciled and inked in MangaStudio EX 3.0, then all colors in Photoshop CS3.
The black lines were changed to color by going over them with a pencil tool set to "lighten". Then I dropped in all the flat tones via the paintbucket, which allows me to do over all selections of a color for doing gradients and airbrush fills. All of the color on Vanessa herself was done on one layer, the other layers were the background, and the type and the cast shadow, and an overall flat color layer that I set to "multiply" to bring all the colors into the same family. I'll try to post a short tutorial on the process. Here's an older one I posted to DeviantArt about how I cel-shade: LINK

That pic I did of Vanessa came out nice, too. I was pretty sure for the first four-fifths of it I had totally failed, and then it just sort of rose up out of the pencil accidents and re-re-re-re-re-erasing. Which is how I knew it was time to stop.

@andrenavarro - My first official redhead success, I think.

What is it about redheads that's so hard to capture?? I think part of the credit here lies with the photographer/model, who choose particularly 'amiable' angles and contrasts for rendering purposes.
I'm beginning to think the key to getting redheads lies in choosing to make them either dark haired or light haired, at least when it comes to using pencil.

Seriously, knowing when to stop on a drawing (especially a pencil drawing) is essential. When I'm drawing, there's usually one, maybe two points where I should stop, but then I push through and eventually get to the next stop point. If I'm smart, I stop there. If I'm not, a keep going, then curse myself for not listening to my inner art brain who was screaming "Hey dickhead, stop before you really fuck this up!"

It does seem the largest part of Whitechapellers comes in two categories, and I can't decide which one to draw: the big, facial-haired, nerd (with glasses)... or the hip, tatted, groovy chick (with cleavage).

Interesting. It really changes the feel of the piece to change out black lines for color lines. It softens things up, making it look more animation/cel like.

There's been so, so much fantastic art in this thread, but I have to say, that last piece is something I'm keeping as a reference... kind of building up a portfolio of stuff to study and practice from, and I fucking LOVE the shading on that.

(why do I need practice? Because up until a month ago, I was drawing glorified stick figures, and I wanted to change that)

When I saw the photo of you touching your headphones, my first thought was "What's he listening to?" As I was tracing the outline the answer came to me, "He's listening to the universe...or something wacky like that."

From that, I just abused Photoshop until I had something I thought looked kind of cool.

I've enjoyed your work when it pops up in the remake/remodel threads. I don't have any real illustration aspirations, but knowing you work digitally has really made me want to get better with my little Wacom Bamboo. Once my cashflow situation returns to the positive (hopefully in the next couple weeks) I intend to buy some of your books.

I love everything about that pic. It captures the energy implied in what Paul is doing, makes it radiate outward from the central figure without being totally obvious about what's going on. (I.E., without huge radiating lines or arrows pointing to PAUL'S HEAD WHERE THE MUSIC GOES IN). Whiting out the body just managed to draw attention to the important stuff. Love it.

Everyone can do a stick figure (even me and that about all I can do) then you can paint, we are living in the blessed day and age of the (Superhero of the) Computer (Rage) sure talent still goes a far way can't deny it but persistence/patience is also important and that we all got a bit of at least so all you need is a good tool, my weapon of choice was Zefraks very simple THE SCRIBBLER free and web based.

Man, I didn't realize how much I needed this thread. I've come to use this as a "Drawing Per Day" exercise, trying out new techniques, forced to produce quickly with a level of quality. I REALLY needed this, it's so easy to become complacent, and fall to the same old tricks again and again. I'm just glad you all aren't getting sick of seeing me work through all this sweat and effort. All the nice words are muchly appreciated, thanks!

Thanks! It's always the coolest part of my work that takes the least amount of time - the hand? 10 minutes (ok, really a 1/2 hour, but I enjoyed myself so much it SEEMED like 10 minutes). The watch? After working with 8 different versions, I chucked all the detail, broke down in tears, rent my clothing, start crying for mommy... complete emasculation.

It's a digital piece (Corel Painter Essentials 3 and Bamboo sketchpad) like the rest, but I stuck with the blender and paintbrush tools on a 3-pixel setting and didn't use the Magnify option to clean up - I was after an effect like a coloured pencil drawing, and I think I nailed it pretty well.
All your contributions have been spectacular, too.

Inspired by seeing the work of Edwin and Art Grafunkel, I decided to extend and work on some areas I'm less skilled at; namely just putting down lines for a more accurate versions of people. I've been heavily using the photos here for my basic body and face proportions (not doing Greg Land uber-tracings, but still having the photo on a layer for strong reference), and while the whiz-bang Photoshop stuff is fun, I've been too long away from doing the equivalent of just grabbing a 4B pencil and just drawing.

So, using one of @thewaltonsare's nice photos, I decided to give it a try and see what happened. Looking at her photo, not on a layer for any tracing/spotting, just observation. When I got to a finish point, I actually really liked how the digital "pencils" looked (this is still drawn in MangaStudio), so I decided to post these as is. I may go further and ink this one, but if I don't, I kind of like seeing all the guide forms, erases and imperfections in the drawing, in much the same way I dig seeing Art Grafunkel's loose lovely line work or Edwin's tight, sketchy pencils.

Eh, this thread is functioning as a really good exercise in art for me, so why not exercise everything, not just the same thing over and over?

I traced the basic outline from the photo, but then used the photo as visual reference for the rest of the linework. The dialogue is the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the photo. I'll feel like kind of a jackass if it turns out Atomic Sloth is missing both his arms.

I have been away from Whitechapel far too long. Just swam and frolicked through all 28 glorious pages and, as noted, this thread is a definite candidate for greatest ever. The creations here are just breathtakingly awesome and make me want to pick up a pencil and draw someone for the first time in, like, ever. It wouldn't be good but it just looks like so much fun to play :)

Hehe yah one of the perks of my former job... Stan Winston was going to lend us the T-1 (the big one on tracks with the miniguns) for the show, but it had butane flamethrowers and Siggraph wouldn't let us :D... probably smart, we would have inevitably rolled over to the competition with it in a drunken haze.

So TX instead... we did have a good bit of fun with her tho nyuck nyuck nyuck. Sadly, I cant find the cool photos where she is all lit up and stuff...

@ everyone who wishes they could draw - - - Izenmania is completely correct. If you wish you could draw, DRAW! Carry a sketchpad and pencil around with you and draw the landscape and the stuff in it. Draw the other passengers on the bus or train. Copy photographs. Copy drawings by other artists. Make up stuff out of your head and doodle it onto the paper. Take art classes if you like, and if you have the time and money. Art is a learned skill which comes with practice, (moreso to people with talent, of course) and it will come to you if you're willing to put in the effort.

Bingo! You've done it again. And re: some of the discussions here on this thread, here's my rant about artistic talent from the Ivan Brodsky REMAKE thread:

"If it hasn't been said enough, I'm serious that the diversity of art styles in these threads is what makes them interesting.

I've waded through tons of art threads where every entry is a variation of the same exact style, and it's @#$% boring. These threads stand out because of the wide range of concept, and the weak parts are more because of weak concepts, not because of diverse art skills and style. Just because some PhotoShop jack-off like me posts pretty pictures doesn't give me a walk on concept. If my concept is crap, I expect to be called on it. Truthfully, slick and pretty does a better job of covering up crappy ideas, so if nothing else, if my stuff looks all glossed and polished, I would say that's all the more reason to inspect it more closely for cracks.
I'm pretty happy with the work I post here, but it is by no means crit proof."

That's good, because my coloring attempt utterly bombed :D

I think if I want to computer color any of these I'm going to need much cleaner inked lines (as suggested in Mr. Sizer's tutorial). That will have to be an experiment for this weekend, I think.

@ citruscreed - don't worry, I don't think there's such a thing as a bad picture in this thread! just the act of someone putting pencil to paper to draw a picture of you makes it awesome.

roque asked for this a while ago, but I finally managed to scan it and tweak it (which involved running it through a filter so that it didn't look quite so harshly monochrome):

If you'll indulge me with one more suggestion, and this is for everyone else who wishes they could make art: you might try picking up some painting/drawing guides and practicing the exercises within. Paul Sizer and Howyadoin, amongst others, have even posted some of their own tutorials online; Sizer has a manga and photoshop guide, and Howyadoin has one on texturing.

@trini naenae - I wouldn't worry about getting decent paper, Mr. Fowler was done on what goes in the printer. It was a wee bit hard to get the details to catch on top of the toned ground but that could just be because I haven't worked in charcoal in so long...

@Crushling & Shetland: I've found that with charcoal, better paper(or the right paper) makes a huge difference. Also, I usually need a larger sheet of paper. While I've got 400 series and Reeves Lightweight in my sketchbook, 7 x 14 inches is a bit small. I do have another sketchbook I can use, I think, but I wouldn't use computer paper simply because I've been spoiled and would be miserable trying to use charcoal on that.

So, I can't draw (well, I can, but I have never in my life practiced...), so I felt awkward about posting a headshot of myself here since I could not return the favor.

Then I saw this thread explode another twenty or so pages and I figured what the hell. This is the last picture I took of myself to record the growth of my beard before I shaved it off. It's a gigantic headshot because I didn't get anybody else involved and don't really like using the timer, thus it's a classic arm's length deal.

Please ignore the wallpaper behind my head. It's going to be removed, someday.

Truth be told, this needn't be like herding cats now.

I think we can all agree that the artist-types in here get thwacked by a muse upside their head. That something sparks in their brain to compel them to tackle a subject a certain way. Some of 'em participate in a Remake thread, some let a few of them go by. Some people like jason. are first-time posters.

Point being, build it and they will draw. The artists present will find the time to draw the little monsters in the back of their head clawing to get out. They can't help it.

If the various art threads have shown us anything, it is:

* We all love the diverse talent present here.

* We're always surprised at least once/thread by someone.

* There're more artists on here than we're aware of.

* It wasn't until this thread that jason. posted for the first time. It might be YOUR new art thread that brings out another lurker.

Build it, and let 'em take care of it.

I love all of the work you folks are churning out of your own volition. No pay, but adoration. My world is a bit bleak at times, but your collective art helps balance it out. If I don't owe my life to you folks, I owe a portion of my sanity for sure.

Also, it needs be said: the one pic of Pooka in her fedora is begging for a Nagel riff, that if I had PhotoShop, I'd take a stab at. Just turn all visible skin white, hair flat black, bleeding into the hat. Some light tones possibly for the eye-shadow, make the lips striking in contrast with red, etc. You're a walking Nagel painting, Pooka.

Robin's picture up top took about 45 minutes from start to finish, as there wasn't a lot of color FX and outside images to deal with. Her picture that I referenced was pretty animated and ready to be drawn from, so I didn't really need to dream up any complex scenarios. Of all of the ones in this thread, I think Vanessa's "glamour gal" shot took the longest, maybe 2 hours total.

I had to jump on the bad wagon... because I easily cover four or five people in the "weapons to people" ratio with just my knives alone XD The gun is actually a Tokyo Marui gas blow back... it fires 6mm plastic BBs and is hardly all that dangerous (but it /stings/). Aaand... I'm not really all that interesting sans something dangerous in my hands XD

@Photo Mage: Just grab a REALLY big kitchen knife. My bayonet says "crazy". A kitchen knife says "Batshit Insane". And "Batshit Insane" is always fun to draw.

Again, inspired (and impressed) by his loose, scrawly sketch style, I decided to loosen up myself and scribble out some digital lines, really being unafraid to go back and scratch out old lines, erase and scrawl stuff back in to reinforce. Because to start a new thread would be silly... I've a strange favor to ask. (I'd not have to ask if not for the fact that my harddrive was lost, so all the originals of my tweaked images are gone.)

I'm trying to come up with examples of services offered both for my new site, and for the site of the tech guy I do design work for. Of these services (dear god ANYTHING but making a website!) I'd like to offer not only standard photo correction and/or restoration, but also.... enhancement. "Artsification." Basically, I'd offer to transform a that ordinary (but complimentary), grainy, blah snapshot of yourself... into something you'd put in a frame or hang on your wall. (I'f you've any suggestions for a better term, please, suggest!)

Y'know, basically like the digital remixing of people's pictures that's been going on in this thread, already.

If there's a few of you who wouldn't mind your images used as examples on my future site foxforhire.com, and on my tech friend's site nyctechguys.com, I'll prettify your pictures. Give them a bit o zing.

So, I added inks, wich, unlike Swan, ink means everything to me ... I guess.

People People... Sizerization is a LIE. It doesn't make you a better person. It doesn't make your life better. Sizerization is filled with hollow promises and shallow gain. Look away from it's shiny exterior and gaze upon the hidden underbelly of vanity and cheap PhotoShop effects it thrives upon...

I will jump on the bandwagon of many to say that it's a terrific piece - you captured Odaelisabeth, indeed.

I will not, however, jump on the bandwagon and request that you draw me - not for lack of appreciation or desire (because, as stated, your work is great), but because it seems you've been in high demand, and I'd like to not add to the clamoring crowd of fans you've generated.

Woot! I'll draw more pictures too, though I'm not so clean and refined as what seems to be the preferred aesthetic.

Is there anyone who posted way back that hasn't been done yet?

@RachaelNoel - I'm glad you like it. The colours were what made it so hard to resist :) You look like a toddler's dream fashion plate (and I mean that in an entirely positive way)

@heresybob- I was more going for when I destroyed a rather lovely line drawing with cracking poor marker skills and impatience (the skirt is where it really pulled sideways then it was a steady slide down)
