What new projects are you starting this spring? Tell us about them. Don't care what field they're in, so long as they are actual projects as opposed to "cleaning my room" or "finding someone to sleep with me who won't cry and throw up."

And then everyone can come back at the end of May and stare at their wild optimism in horror, okay?

Seriously. What are your plans for spring? Setting up a website? Coding some weird system? Making a book? Designing clothes? A photo shoot? Making art for a gallery showing? BUILDING A DEATH RAY?

I am writing a novel-shaped thing about nanotechnology. Good internets would help as this bugger is research intensive, but New Zealand doesn't so much have broadband as just kind of 'band'. I hope to have it finished by May, at the moment I am heavily chopping and changing the first draft.

Am also embarking on research for a play, to be written this summer with a friend of mine in London, for next year's Edinburgh Festival (with a bit of luck). It's about the River Styx, that's all I can say for now.

Musically, am working on beats and samples for a free to download solo Texture EP, which I hope to have finished by July or so, and lyrics for the next Double Helix EP, which is in production back in sunny Scotland.

And as always, I'm editing and compiling stories for Weaponizer, and ruminating on whether now or later would be a good time to do a POD or small press collection of the site's best stuff...

So I'm a busy bunny, and prob won't get half of this stuff finished in the projected timescales! I've shown you mine, please show me yours.

Well, after I finish the short story I'm working on now I'll be going and working on the rewrite of a steampunk novel I started last year. Short story should be done by mid-march and the novel will hopefully be mostly completed by the end of May.

Getting down to the process of recording the entire 40+ song Mr. Fusion catalogue. (cleaning my room falls under this heading, to make room for mic stands). Hopefully have at least an album's worth by May.

I have a novel-shaped thing in the pipe as well, currently called Kaleidescope for the purposes of naming files. It's about the death of childhood imagination. I've no delusions that I'll finish it anytime soon, but for May I'll hope to at least have nailed down all the things I want to happen, and know who all the characters are and what they're about.

I am getting in shape for the STP, a 204 mile, two-day bicycle ride from Seattle, WA to Portland, OR in July.

Hopefully putting together a local beer guide website, called Tacoma Taps, where bars can list what they are pouring on any given day.

Finished scripting a book yesterday. Moving into editing next week, art to follow. Working on starting freelance writing. Hopefully. Slowly/surely building a project studio with my wife and her work hook-ups.

got half of a video job finished, a youth employment thing for the national deaf organization, which means it has to be don in both ASL & LSQ, plus english & french. the other half's to be done next month in Ottawa.

heading to Montreal next week to discuss a project with another deaf artist. i proposed we combine my photo & her painting skills on a new concept for a tarot project, which will probably take a year to complete.

got an international deaf sports competition (hockey & curling) in winnipeg for april, which we have to develop a live streaming broadcast via the 'net, which we've never done before. it's a learning experience, to say the least.

my film director will be staying with me for a while after i get back from montreal so we can finish the editing of our first feature-length film, which is taking a *LOT* longer than we expected. our projected date for screening is end of apriil/start of may!

have a lot more video/film gear to build from scratch. next up's a focus puller & some china-ball lanterns.

this october's got our second feature-length film in the works, this time a kinky corporate drama. done entirely in ASL, of course!

I've not really had anything in the pipes for a little while now, and that's left me feeling a bit empty. Definitely time to start on something again. Even if its just getting a handful of those Munny dolls and handpainting them as a Horror Classics series of chibi vampires and mummies and zombies.

I should maybe get my girlfriend to teach me illustrating in photoshop. I haven't drawn anything in a long while cos I don't like my sketches, but maybe if I new how to clean them up a bit digitally that'd give me the enthusiasm to keep it up anyway.

Writing three scripts. (to avoid breaking the rule of posting scripts/stories/fiction, I'll just babble on about formats for a bit and then shut up).

First, consisting out of six 52-page long issues, two pages reserved for commentary or references or somesuch. This one's nicely outlined and I'm in the middle of scripting the fourth issue.

Second, my weirdo mutation of 24hour comic book, except the idea is to work for several days and spend up to ten hours to draw ten pages a day. Preferably for an entire month. Decided to break another rule and script it beforehand. Got the plot ready at this point. Obviously this one's b&w.

Third, being the second volume of my webcomic. At this point all I got is roughly 1/3rd of the plot.

Around May I'm hoping to be done writing all three and have drawn either first issue of the first or the entirety of the second.
(and I'll probably make them available using POD and as webcomics).

I need to find an artist for a nearly finished project, The Dumpster. I need to start writing a web series that popped in my head the other day. I need to either find an artist for Virtuoso or just accept my mediocre art skills and do it my self. Need to nail down an artist for Antiquity, because it looks to be in permanent hiatus.

Oh, and recording a few spoken work projects with my talented friends.

Most importantly, I need to manage my manic depression. Like, at all. All of the above would have been long done were it not for my bipolar episodes.

Well, one of my projects is actually homework, but it's a project nonetheless. I'm going through my photos and putting together a portfolio. However I've got lots of unfinished projects that I really should finish on top of that.

Like: making sketchbooks for some people I'm working on stuff with (too poor, good paper isn't cheap), finishing that hourly comic I was supposed to do on valentines (I just have the notes and the book I'm going to draw them in), filling up my newest sketchbook in a fast obsessive manner, finishing carving linoleum from my 2d design class, and I'm sure there's so much more. I'm quite talented at coming up with ideas that I never manage to get around to actually finishing. Well... I did finish the new sketchbook. Points for me?

And this turned into a rant about how I struggle with getting things done. Ugh. Total Fail.

After three years in school learning the ways of Industrial Design, I have found myself in my very last studio.

Project Uno: To develop a paint scheme for a Fat Bob Harley Davidson to be raffled off to fund a year's salary of a visiting industry professor (v.i.p.) in the department of Building Science (only 2 weeks left on this one).

Project Dos: To develop a character and make a small toy. I chose a robot as the main focus. This character will be replicated 4 times to show 4 different emotions such as happy, angry, sad, excited. No more than a few inches tall and hopefully a packaging system for the characters.

Project Tres: I need to do major work on my portfolio, resume, and other job finding elements.

Project Cuatro: Job Search, Job Search, Job Search.

Project Cinco: This is my main focus and main project of my last studio. I am developing a nightstand with attention to cord management. I am focusing on the simple stylings of the Arts & Crafts movement with hopes of some beautiful joinery. With the cord management, I hope to create a system that can be easily replicated to be used in other furniture such as desks and entertainment systems.

hey welcome to the game! got my latest royalty cheque for a 'scholarly' book I wrote a few years ago - twenty bucks. woo hoo! Less than what it'd cost for a UK bank to turn it into pizza-buying poonds.
And on that depressing note ... I remain hopeful that this spring I will not take the sniper rifle to any of my colleagues or conduct a mass cull of the higher administrative echelons of my institution (and I use that word advisedly). And I have wildly optimistic plans to start laying the foundations for my next scholarly work (on the ultimate nature of reality - wah ha ha ha) which will undoubtedly bring me similar riches in the future ...

finishing the illustrations and building the maze for the sequel to subroza.nl book by fellow whitechapler Mardoek.

Doing final inking on a nine-page comicbook surrealist story.

Writing and casting for a 45 min 'end of the world' you-tube released movie. Casting as making a list of: 'who do i know is good and available and will work for the fame and no money?'
Then follows the worrying about budget&logistics. Movie won't get done until x-mas next year, to be realistic.
Yess the skinnyly-clad heroine (functional nudism does it exist? :P) will hate my macho-guts.

Hereby: if any whitechaplers are in the netherlands @ shooting time -will anounce- you are welcome to join the cast/staff as long as i have unfulfilled jobs :) or just for the heck; come watch us make a little mindhumpingfilmmonster. :D

A friend of mine who's an actual professional regularly-working comics artist wants me to write scripts for him.

I wrote a short fantasy piece which we want to submit to Heavy Metal - yes we know it's a long shot.

Next I'm writing a one-shot comic to introduce a concept which we then hope to expand into a miniseries.

I'm also working on a miniseries with another artist which has been progressing with glacial slowness. We're getting the whole thing finished before releasing it - currently the first issue is complete; the second issue is fully penciled and lettered and being inked; I'm halfway through the script for for three and hope to have the whole thing finished in the next month or so.

A third artist has also asked me to write for him - this guy is a professional artist from outside the comics field who hasn't really done much professional comics work but has appeared in numerous small-press and semi-pro venues. he's very good and a real dynamo. I don't know if i'll have anything for him by May but i'm sure hoping I will.

After years of trying to break into comics i'm now in an extremely fortunate position - and I'm determined not to fuck it up.

Outside of comics, I'm hoping to get the accounts of the non-profit where I volunteer up to date and audits - they're currently three years behind.

At the day job, I'm looking at relocating a shop to new premises and possibly buying another store.

1. Trying to evolve myself into a Project Manager. My responsibilities have changed at work, I've been kicked upstairs and currently am enacting the bad-boy McNulty "You'll never put me behind a desk! I gotta be out on the street!" character arc.

2. Trying to develop some side projects outside of my job. Maybe getting that shared world notion off the ground.

3. Trying to keep up on human maintenance. I just went through a long slide where I just Couldn't Be Arsed about my car, for example, and have now cleaned it and fixed it up and am trying to keep it if not well-maintained, at least functional. Same with the kitchen and media stuff in the apartment.

Shooting for eight-ninety pages which is do-able. Since it's only a first draft, I can blue-sky it all I want, it'll all change anyway.

I will be halfway through my MA this spring and will have enough credits to teach dual-enrollment (classes for which the students get college credit) classes at our high school. I am lobbying hard to get the school to allow me to teach a World Religions class next year. It has been submitted to the school board for approval. If I get the class, I will be working on curriculum this spring and most of the summer too before I start up classes again.

I'll be going to the UK Web and Mini-Comix Thing in London at the end of March, and hope to have a few books to sell at it. The first issue of The Cattle Raid of Cooley, my Iron Age Irish adventure webcomic, should be ready by then if I can get my finger out and get the cover and endnotes done. Maybe bring some of my old minicomics back into print while I'm at it.

the magazine of Science Fiction & Fantasy with a twist

My wife and I started Crossed Genres last year, technically (in October), and we've released 3 issues (monthly) with the fourth coming out on March 1. But this year we're looking to build it beyond a hobby. Also we'd like to not be losing money on it.

We recently switched to being a paid market (which didn't really help with the whole "not losing money" thing), and we''re expanding into e-books, subscriptions, offering on Amazon, etc. Working with a shoestring budget is holding us back a bit but that's part of the project, right? *beats head against wall*

a friend and i are planning out another time-lapse bodypainting video/photoshoot project with multiple models within the next couple months. am also currently in the process of getting ready to move to vancouver by may to start a tattoo apprenticeship, and illustrating a set of tarot cards. (i started the deck about three years ago and so far have around ten either finished or nearly there. at this rate, i expect to have the full 78 done somewhere around the time my age hits the half-century mark.)

Planning my next graphic novel project, which will be a space-pirates yarn written by L. Neil Smith.

Script is completed, art production will be a collaboration with myself and a 3D artist (who goes by the moniker "-3-") who is building spaceships and architecture. The idea is to render the 3D stuff into panels and then I draw the characters and other "organic" stuff in and around it. I've never worked this way before; it should either be interesting or aggravating as all fuck.

That's roughly what the cover for the second issue of FlashINK--Singapore's first and only tattoo magazine, started by my sister-in-law, my brother and myself--is going to look like. We go to the printers on Monday and are spending the weekend doing some last minute tinkering here and there.

We're a bi-monthly mag. Every issue features interviews or profiles of mostly local artists, studios and collectors (though we do have a fair bit of international and regional coverage), as well as convention reports and, of course, tons of pictures of gorgeous tats.

The issue itself will go on sale in March and is available at some tattoo studios here, as well as through subscription here (.doc).

I'm working towards my first roller derby bout as a referee with the London Rollergirls, which will probably be at April's championship bout between feminists from the future, the Suffra Jets, versus relentless steampunks, the Steam Rollers. Then in July there's the inaugural European roller derby tournament happening in London, which is going to be called Roll Britannia. I'm pretty much definitely going to be involved in that - can't wait!

I've already been a lineup manager for the Steam Rollers for their crunch decider match at Clockwork Carnage, which was amazing fun even though I felt like I'd aged a decade in an hour thanks to stress. Trying to organise fierce and amazingly talented girls when they're in an adrenaline sports frenzy is hard work.

However, I think I suck less than the majority, and I do have the power of my agent and her film co-worker on my side. Sort of like the Force, with Blackberries.

Over the Winter I've completely restructured the architecture of my book, and I reckon I've got a couple more weeks of that to really get everything properly nailed down. Winter is for thinking. This Spring's project is to get the draft down and in the barrel for another round of editing. I fall in love with this story every single time I look at my outline. There are three chapters already written that I have to remind myself that I was the one who wrote those. The combination of more intense critical thought than I have ever really applied to one area and just being so fucking pleased with myself is a strange and exhilarating feeling.

But I need something to do with my hands, and come March I won't have a garden. But I will have a workshop. So I've got a sketchbook full of clothing patterns. Over Spring I'd like to get enough money to afford fabric and a sewing machine - now that I can't borrow the use of one - and start putting together those clothes. My mates insist that if I do that I'll end up with a design house by accident.

@LindsayDuff, yeah, having done a spot of refereeing for the Terminal City Roller Girls, I'm pretty certain I know what you're going through. Being the youngest bloke in the ref team, the girls ignored my name and simply called me Jail Bait. I reckon that's the best synopsis of my Roller Derby experience. That and General Jinjur's veteran's eyes as she said "Derby'll eat your life, son." I haven't seen her for a year.

My big project for Spring, and for all of 2009 really, is THE LOST GRIND OPERA.

Because I'm not content enough being an artist or a photographer or a director or (sometimes) a writer, I've now thrown my hat in the ring as a producer.

Located at the world famous El Cid Theater in Los Angeles, The Lost Grind Opera is a bi-monthly theatrical showcase that brings you the very best in dark cabaret. With its unique blend of glamorous modern burlesque, original live music and deviantly hilarious vaudeville, The Lost Grind Opera looks to set the new standard in L.A.'s underground scene.

I've been working on putting this show together since October and we're finally launching our opening night on March 13th. The idea for it basically sprung from the notion of "if you can't find anything to entertain you, create it yourself". I finally got off my ass and started gathering my creative friends to see if we could put together a fun, sexy cabaret type show together.

My main goal is to qualify for my PhD track, but that strikes me as a boring goal that mostly involves studying and convincing my peers that, yes, I did in fact write five pages of text in a single sitting. Scientists tend to regard writing as some sort of tentacular Templesmithian monstrosity.

Of greater interest to me is to generate preliminary data for my new project that has arisen from my qualification escapades. It involves delicious mouse bone marrow and cancer virus.

Aside from work, I intend to finish this specfic novel I've been writing and have been too busy doing science to work on in the last two weeks. Editing will be the summer's goal.

I have six graphic novel scripts to start producing, beyond the two comics I'm already working on, so depending on what happens with my day job I intend to begin one of those.

Also, I'm working on a CMS script in php, mysql and Ajax for my local comics group, The Bellingham School of Comics, to use for hosting their works. It looks like I'll be finished with the back end and will start on the page layouts this Spring.

And, if the 'Ham is receptive enough, I should be starting my One Year of Shows. My goal being to have artwork hanging somewhere in my home town for 365 days straight.

Finally, I want to start remastering my old comics and begin layout for The F-ing Big Tome.

But truth be told, I'd be happy if I can just keep Harmless Free Radicals and Par for the Core going.

Finishing up my 28 short stories sent out to various places in February gig. I also have some poems I'd like to touch up for publishing as well.

Next month, I'll start onto a pseudo non-fiction book that I have a small outline for already. The plan is to write ten pages per chapter at ten pages a day with 12 chapters planned. Theoretically, it would only be 12 days for a first draft. Let's hope I can stick with that.

Job searching in Pittsburgh or New York. Whatever one gives me a reliable offer first becomes my new hometown.

I am still getting my food/travel/tour blog Vagabond Appteite off the ground. I have been seeing some pretty decent traffic so far and hopefully when I am on the road again it will pick up with more daily updates. Also I'm always looking for suggestions of places to review so feel free to shoot me a line with your favorite dive bar or restaurant.

Speaking of being on the road my Bryce Midas incarnation is hitting the road in 2 weeks (agh!) and touring the East coast and part of the midwest. Then I'm meeting up with Battlefields for the end of their tour in April and then back to my hometown to get some work done on my next record which still has no name. Also on the tour I will probably be putting out an EP of demo stuff I have done in Florida and will have that online for free download in the coming week or two.

I also have a couple of other projects on which I am working, although they remain in the planning stages at present so I am not going to talk about them so as not to jinx anything. I will say this about them. The first one involves quantum physics, Sufism, a man in a tuxedo who is not wearing pants and a lot of cursing and boozing. The second one involves Civil War-era alien conspiracies, the temples of Angkor Wat and the discovery of Atlantis off the coast of Japan.

Also if the world ends this year I am going to buy a .308 Winchester and a lot of bullets, hole up in some remote part of the US and learn to garden, can, install/repair solar/wind generators and pick off a G-Man from my rooftop lookout.

I'm writing another comic, as I just now finished an anthology that put togheter two years material that was laying around dead on discs or forgotten folders in the bowels of my computer. I'm still writing every day. The dead line I gave myself to the first draft of my novel is may 24th. Let's see if I can make it. Before that, I have this new comic and a pitch to produce.

1.) I am determined to find a decent use for Twitter.

John Scalzi mentioned that while he uses Twitter, he doesn't directly follow a lot people using Twitter itself. He subscribes to the RSS feeds tied to their Twitter accounts. I like this idea much more than using their web page or using a client like Twhirl. I put together a Yahoo Pipe to mash together a bunch of Twitter RSS feeds so I can subscribe to a single feed. I quite like it, but it's not perfect and I'm determined to wade through Pipes' obtuse documentation until I get it right. Once I've fixed it up, I will probably post some more details somewhere here.

I've also started posting here today. It's just going to be bits and pieces of things I've felt the need to look up or research further while reading. I don't guarantee that it will be updated regularly nor do I guarantee that I will stick to it, but I shall try.

2.) We use LOINC and its accompanying tool RELMA a quite a bit at work to facilitate the sharing of laboratory results between local hospitals. However, the RELMA software is clunky and we only use about 70% or less of its features. The thing regularly takes up 200 or more MB of memory to do its thing and it uses a pair of Access databases to store its data which is, quite frankly, offensive to me. I'm thinking of building a web-based version that is snappier and consists only of the features that we regularly use.

One catch is that I'd need to motivate myself sufficiently to work on it outside of work hours as The Company owns anything I create while on their time and I'd like to release anything I develop into the wild.

The other catch is that the license that LOINC is released under doesn't allow me to re-use all of their database tables without express permission. I'm not sure I can get this permission and I'm not sure how much I could accomplish without it.

Yet another catch is that I've not programmed much beyond SQL and Python scripts in the past five years.

We'll see I suppose.

There is really a lot of fascinating stuff going on around Whitechapel.

I have begun writing and doodling a series of mostly autobiographical comic stories under the titled "Scrambled Circuits." I can't draw humans very well, so everyone is a robot, tentacle creature, or some sort of hybrid robot/tentacle monstrosity. The stories range from attempts at comedy to depressing as can be and awkwardly mundane.

This project has two purposes for me.
[01] Get over my paranoia and stop letting my lack of SUPER LEET drawing skills prevent me from making comics, which is what I fucking want to do, and allow me to slowly learn how to tell stories in this medium I adore. And hopefully I will one day be able to illustrate the more artistically challenging things I write.
[02] Tell these stories that I feel are important. Of course I don't know if I would feel my stories are important if I didn't admire James Kolchaka, Harvey Pekar, Carol Tyler, and others like that.

I want to release the first collection by the end of the year and I want the final product to be as many pages as I can fit into a saddle stitched periodical and priced as low as I can. I'll most likely go through Ka-Blam/Indy Planet because I order comics from them a bit and the quality is fantastic. It looks like it will be 4 dollars for 50-52 black and whites pages. Though that might end up being 5 dollars, which would mean that every copy that sold I would get just enough in profit to print up another copy for free that I could then give away to promote it, but I don't know if people would be willing to pay 5 bucks. I have no delusions about making any amount of money, and I won't mind sinking a bit to print off copies to send to people/give out.

It's quite the learning process, and the few finished works I've scanned and uploaded are far from the quality I want in the end product, but everyone starts somewhere.

Well, I just received my FINAL WINNING NOTIFICATION from the IRISH NATIONAL LOTTERY, so fuck this old "work" bullshit, I just won about 4 million GBP. I'm never working again. Just as soon as I send them all my personal information, they'll wire me the cash.

What I WAS planning on doing until I won the IRISH NATIONAL LOTTERY and emailed claimfidiciarymarkclassan@gmail.com to claim my prize (please, you should all email claimfidiciarymarkclassan@gmail.com to claim your prize as well), I was working with my cousin/best friend on a newspaper comic strip about two smokers, a clown, a demon, and a friend of mine from college, which we will hopefully submit to some of the finer web publications out there. Eventually, if we get picked up, we'd like to work daily, or at least week-daily. I'm also putting together a three-man standup comedy/filmed sketch show together, which will hopefully start touring the Midwest by the end of March. And lastly, I'm working on building up a good set of interviews with some key cutting-edge figures in comics and comedy to submit to The Rumpus. I'm actually hoping to interview Ellis, among others.

But, as I said, I won the IRISH NATIONAL LOTTERY. So fuck that shit.

I have begun publishing a mini comic this year. It is available in print in NZ only. This is a stupid (but fun) way of doing things: Spring (my Autumn) will see a web launch of the comic, once if figure out how to do it right.

Just signed up for this summer's gaming festival. A vain hope of doing something interesting with the Transhuman Space setting by ditching all the dice geekery.

The Nørwegian Style project collecting small "role playing poems" and minigames seems dead or dying, just as it was approaching the finish line. Haven't given up hope, but can't put it on top of the list yet.

A paper issue of the Imagonem fanzine might be too much to hope for, but having one ready by May would be awesome. Currently, it's a heap of layout sketches and mad suggestions and pictures of penises scrawled in crayons by a bunch of drunken game designers. Maybe if I put a pretty cover on it...

There's a canvas stashed somewhere with a lot of broad strokes on it. I was planning to play with oils again. Will probably stay that way for a while.

My minigame, "Mundus" has been playtested several times. Results are exciting, to me at least. The engine works; now I just have to make a bunch of skins to dress it in. Then more playtest.

Lærelyst ("Lust for learning"? Sounds... wrong in translation. Educational RPG scenarios for schools.) has yet another final deadline approaching. This time it is final. Looks like I'm making it to payday.

i am working on the long awaited (by none) final issue of my zine, getting everything prepped so that on march first i can just start cranking out final pages. writing, rambling, six pages of comics. i dont like drawing my own short stories because i am not as good of an artist as i need to be, but fuck it. ive done it before, ill do it again. four pages of it is my take on the "comics as pop single" but since i love powerviolence, and the best PV songs are about 45 seconds long, i am writing it as a chopped up (almost post-FC, dare i say it) piece of weirdness. listen to a HATRED SURGE song, and you will see where i am going with this.

also got back my interview with david lapham, that he turned from a maybe one page affair into a four-five page radness session. to whet your appetites, it includes the sentence "i commuted two hours coming and two hours going each day so i could work in the offices and learn from...the old marvel vets they had, even Bob Layton, before i knew he was a dick".

Well today actually is "clean my damn room day" so... But once that's out of the way:

I'm thisclose to nailing down a stage managing gig for some friends in North Hollywood. I'm really, really nervous that I'll have written this and then something will happen and it won't work out. The last year, solid, has been a series of getting so close to bring productive that I can taste it only to have it be taken away. Well, it's not for pay and about the only thing I've been able to do in 12 months has been donate my time and effort to other people's ideas. So that's in favor of the project. Anyway, I should know by the beginning of the week.

This is as good a space as any to declare to myself that the two short stories that have been taking up space in my head and not letting me sleep at night will be written by the end of May. One is the noir(+/-dick) story and the other is shifting language, possibly written in the second person.

Another project that just started getting out of the "if only I could..." stage will be to take myself on a photo tour of the LA area with my Water is Life subject. The project is totally self indulgent since it's a pantomime of what I could do if I had a real DV recorder and software and know-how to use it all. I just have a sad little Canon snap photo thing, but that's not reason not to do the project.

I have a movie kicking around in my head. I don't know how to write a screenplay, let alone make a movie. It would be better off a novel but it's not coming to me as a novel. Damn annoying that. It's the only thing that's come to me so far for trying to tackle the shifts in identity and duty. Anyway there are other movie-ish ideas but I won't waste your time with shit that isn't going anywhere right now. Suffice to say I'll keep an eye out for outlets to learn to write for film and/or get people together on this.

Also going to keep writing outlines, sketches, pen portraits, whatever for a thing that should be a comic but suffers from my lack of skills and personally knowing anyone willing to draw a comic for free (for now). I'd love to have the major characters sketched and the (first) major story arc completed by end May.

Personal projects going to be: figure out how to stay on top of the news without it taking over my days and nights. Also need to resume being diurnal and get into shape. Its horrifying how fast I get out of breath these days. And find a way to make money, for fuck's sake.

I have taken up Jeet Kun Do. In spring I will beat up many men and steal their candy.
I have taken up track management and keyboards. In spring I will be touring with a couple of bands on a short stint from Canada into the US.
I have all new softwares coming for video editing and music editing. In spring I will be using these softwares and start uploading materials to the internets.

As If I didn't have enough to do:

I've just signed a contract for another movie. I'm the screenwriter and a producer on it and it will go before the cameras later this year. I'm aiming to apply all of my pulp writing and design sense to the production of this one so we create a cool look for no money - a live action comic book.

We're aiming for something like this.

I'm (still) writing a business plan that needs to be completed soon. Ditto proposal to an author to license his work.

I'm working on pitches I've been invited to present for a stinging pulp prose anthology.

A story I wrote for Black Coat Press last year is coming out in French.

There's a webcomic in my future. Writing it now, though hosing off the crap is probably a more apt description of my process. Trying to make it like your novella format, Warren. 48 page equivalent in terms of webpages/layers.

And I'm writing a newsletter to be tied into my blog. It will go into more detail about the movie, the business and so forth. It will come out once a month with all sorts of rantings and ravings stuffed inside.

Finalize the script on a short horror story comic (shooting for around 48 pages) and draw/letter the layouts. Hopefully I'll start drawing it before spring is over as well, but there's always the dayjob looming overhead.

Redesign my website so the whole thing is Wordpress powered. That's gonna be a pain in the ass, because I've never been that into webcoding

Design a booth display for comic conventions. The only thing I'm signed up for this year is the West Hollywood Book Fair in Oct, but if I can get someone to split a table, I may try to weasel my way into one of the bigger shows this year.

There's more I'd like to do, but I'm also moving in a month or two, and that's gonna F up everything.

Writing an SF/adventure novella cycle, not for publication, just to prove I can. It's coming along in fits and starts; I start writing from dialogue and interactions, then build the plot as I go and setting to suit it, so I'm at the stage where I know the plot, and I'm crossing out and rewriting great swaths from the beginning onward.

Designing myself a new webpage. It's been too long since I've had one. It will be all about red and white squares.

Want to make at least one more scarf before the weather starts to warm up and I lose interest. Red and either dark red or purple.

Also, finding a real grown up job.

My extracurricular activities have been suffering in favor of my primary job. SmartAction is getting to have some pretty good demos, and we have a fair number of potential licensees in negotiations right now for various types of scripts and apps. It's not the sexiest thing in the world to me, but it'll pay the bills once it's up and running.

Once the sites are up, maybe they'll let me flip some switches and let people talk to the full engine as "upgrade testing" or something instead of the scripted lobotomized version we're pushing right now. That would be pretty cool.

FoxDaughter is technically up, but I have a backlog of pages and lettering to do.

I have some bleepity bloop music I fiddle with every once in a while on my tablet now that I have a keyboard. It's not fantastic, but I've been planning on collecting it and exposing it to some review. By some chance I saw a meme for naming your band and first album today, and I have some prototype album art:

Nose still to the grindstone of Witch Doctor, my horror/medical drama comic with artist Lukas Ketner. A disgraced physician-turned-mystic and his quest to find a vaccine — for the apocalypse.

By April we hope to have New Strains done. Three eight-page stories with different tones, focused on different parts of the Witch Doctor universe. A road-map to a new comic series contained in the space of a normal floppy. (Failing that, by April we hope to have a publisher. That process may very well interfere with getting all three stories out on time, because when editors ask to see things, we drop what we're doing to accommodate them.)

For those unfamiliar with the project, here's the latest two pieces of concept art we've released.

Lukas and I are also getting contracts this week for a absolutely fascinating historical project. Crossing my fingers!

I'm being hired full-time at the school where I work, and that's requiring me to learn some new skills. Particularly, I need to learn the AVID video/film editing system (at least, better than I do now) and to a lesser extent learn ProTools (a high end audio editing suite used for film and video sound editing).

Other goals that I have for myself:

Finish the rough draft of my Ghost in the Shell inspired screenplay (currently at 90 pages) World Moves On. Like all my projects, I started with a very straightforward plan for what it was supposed to be, and it has increasingly grown beyond my original concept and bloomed into weirder territory.

Write an experimental one-act play for a theatre group in Chico that has called for submissions (my girlfriend's aunt clued me in). I'm writing it in iambic pentameter because I want to give that a shot. I've got about a page and a half now, and I'm aiming between ten and fifteen for the final piece (which will almost assuredly mean I'll be somewhere around twenty pages by the time I'm done).

Finish my current video/film compositor demo reel project, a movie trailer for a fake blockbuster called "Wizard People." The goal is to showcase a series of compositing and motion graphics based special effects (magical beams, particle effects, day for night, etc) in the service of a totally inane story. The trailer, as scripted, included the standard cliches of "This summer..." and "In a world...." All the footage has been shot, now I just need to work on the compositing.

Learn Apple Color, a software based digital grading and color correction system for video. I've done some of this kind of work in Adobe After Effects (I've actually got an IMDB credit for it) but Color is built from the ground up for this purpose. I'm going to start, at the suggestion of a friend who works as an instructor in the software, by coloring poorly corrected/uncorrected movie trailers from Apple.com/trailers. I've just started and so far so good; I pulled probably about 20 trailers off of the site to use to learn the software. I plan on posting the results at my youtube address.

EDIT just moments after posting: I almost forgot, a coworker and I are going to start work on a weird film project sort of inspired by Tetsuo: The Iron Man and Brazil in our downtime. We're going to shoot it in standard definition, then use a series of video filters in several programs to reduce the image to a series of colored lines against black, then scale it up with another series of visual filters, increasing line density. This will simplify the shooting and editing process and allow us a great deal of latitude to create imaginative visual effects with no budget, and work within the context of the story's dystopian setting.

I'm learning to screen print! I've always meant to learn how but finally have gotten around to it. An upside is that these days the inks are water soluble so it won't make me high while I'm doing it.

Also I'm taking letter press classes. I actually have a minor in book arts, but I want to refresh my brain because college was a long time ago. Plus if you take the classes you can rent time on the presses at www.sfcb.org. Which will be what I'll be doing starting next month. And also making more books.

Main project is that, so help me God(s), my dissertation proposal will be all planned and the literature review written by the end of spring. Hopefully will also have a paper in submission by then as well. Final project is more tentative, involving experiments in genetic recombination - i.e. getting pregnant. That one is still under negotiation with the other primary investigator, though.

I've just launched a new podcast. I'm trying to do something I haven't seen done before - comedy that follows the listener into the real world. The format is a series of unofficial tours of Dublin museums and galleries - all complete lies -, presented by a pompous fictive art expert whose one part Melvin Bragg, one part Edgar Oliver. I've got three in the can, and I'm mid-way through writing the fourth. My aim is to do ten, then work on a spec script using the same character, but a more radio friendly format, for radio 4. All my comedy heroes from Chris Morris to Steve Coogan got their break writing scripted comedy for BBC radio, and it would be heaven to get the chance to do something similar.

Also trying to finish the ol' novel and get some more short stories published.

I'm working on the design for my first tattoo, and am hoping to have it finalized by the end of May. I've selected an artist, and we've had a brief discussion about the piece. Before I go any further in the collaboration, I need to make some decisions in order to provide clear direction to him. Hopefully, I'll have narrowed and clarified my ideas in the next 3 weeks or so, so we can start working out the final design.

Also, hoping to have one direction (probably East) done for my photo project. I want to go exactly 100 miles from my home on each of the cardinal directions and shoot what I find there.

Hmm, let's see.

Currently having trouble meeting the bills, so I have set up a shop on Spreadshirt, the idea being that it may bring in some extra much needed income, and would be a good way to get some of my art out there being seen. Just funny, quirky, and geeky stuff really. So far only two designs are solely mine, but I made a couple more shirts to fill it out using designs that they have on file.

Anyway, part of what I'll be doing over next few months is create some more original designs for it. The shop can be found on www.mojodesigns.spreadshirt.com

Also, still carrying on work on getting Zombie Death Squad released. We're now much closer to it, so hopefully by the end of Spring it will be out, and you'll all be buying it. Over Spring then I will also be creating stuff for the marketing campaign and getting that started in earnest.

I'm also looking for artists for some of my own personal comics projects, there are about three I'm looking to do, with as many artists would be good. So I'm writing scripts and hoping to hear back from artists soon, though always good to hear from more. You can mail me on mojojoseph@hotmail.co.uk about it if you want.

For me, I'm going to be feverishly working (around actual, paying work) on the art for KidneyDevil, a 13-page DareDevil parody comic written by Whitechapel's own Ted Roland.

I currently have the pencils for the origin story (7 pages of the 13) complete, and the first page of that inked. The aim is to have it done by mid-March, giving Ted plenty of time to letter so we can have it printed and handed out to the ~~willing mugs~~ lovely folks at Seattle's ECCC in April.

So it's coming into Autumn here and I have two big projects...

1. Illustrating a hort story written by a friend involving Alistair Crowley in drag. This is for publishing.

2. A gallery submission for oztaku (oztaku.com) which was/is a manga art community, but it's kind of spreading to "People of all walks that are interested in Manga and Anime". I'm don't do manga style but will be submitting a peice ink wash, charcoal and pastel.

3. I think, given time around uni, weddings, and art-with-a-deadline, I'll be getting started on a series of realted peices that are buzzing round in my head.

I'll be entering the Small Press Idol contest, soon, when I finally get a cover image that really kills, and I'd like to finally get something into Zuda, which I think I've finally got the perfect project for.

Also, I've been thinking about recording some more music, except that what I really want to do is an entire "album" of Will Smith movie theme songs that Will Smith didn't get around to recording... You know: He did songs for Wild Wild West and both MIB movies, but I thought that I would create a Will Smith rap track for EVERY movie that he's been in, like Six Degrees of Separation and The Pursuit of Happyness. I'll be going by the name "Fake Will Smith", and will rap the tracks in my best Smith impersonation, and then put them on my Myspace Music page for all to enjoy.

I'm working on a post-post-apocalyptic socio-political sci-fi shaped thing that's supposed to examine the existential relationship between an individual and their democracy during the lowest times of the Bush years(or something). The bastard is up to the first act break, but I keep putting it down to write short fiction. I've got three shorts in the can and a few more rattling around between my ears.

I guess my project for the spring is to get something in print.

I'm hitting the gym as often as I can learning how to break people, which is all kinds of fun. I'm hoping to be ready to step into the ring before this time next year, but it probably won't happen. Not enough hours in the day.

Also, I'd kind of like to get a stand-up act together and hit a few open mic nights. It's always been my dream to call a room full of people a gaggle of weeping cunt sores and have them love me for it.

Based on this thread, I'm officially going to stop bitching about how busy I am all the time.

Work: Learning to grow Talin gene deficient Natural Killer Cells in vitro (in a plastic dish) by harvesting them from Mouse Embroid Bodies grown from Embryonic Stem Cells. Also generating DNA constructs with the Talin gene or various custom mutant Talin genes using Molecular cloning. Also harvesting spleens from mice... which is mostly just unpleasant.

Other work: finishing some graphic design projects for a Biotech company I used to work for.

Hobby: My webcomic site turns a year old in April and I will be starting the Fourth chapter of the main storyline comic which I am pretty excited about. Also figure I will try my hand at a more seriously produced comic about a process server in the world of comics. I'm worried that my art skills, while much improved, are not up to snuff.

I have some articles I've been researching and it's time to actually do the writing part. This should take up the next few weeks in between school work.

Also have two short stories I'd like to get past the few notes I've made, one a zombie thing which popped in my head thanks to reading about a book looking specific for zombie stories with a certain focus, and another story that has taken so many different shapes over the last two years I have no clue what to really call it. But this year has been the year of no longer dicking around and been to a great start so far, just need to continue to push forward.

"What new projects are you starting this spring?" This is a terrifying question, but after reading through 7 pages of everyone else's plans, it's obvious I'm nowhere near the most ambitious.

My band just got our CD back from being Mastered, so we're putting together the artwork and creating a press pack for that now. I'm also throwing together a DIY CDR package to hand out while I'm traveling before we get the final pressing back. I'll post something here, when it's time.

We're writing new songs for upcoming shows.

I'm writing new songs for an upcoming EP, even though I don't know a damn thing other than drums and synth noise.

I'm buying furniture and decorating in preparation for taking more portraits. Had I just gone Danish Modern, I would've been done weeks ago, but no... I had to decide on Louis XVI on a budget.

My parlor (when you have two living rooms, you have to call one a parlor) is full of lights and backdrops for taking some group shots later this week.

There's also this box of photos waiting to be turned into a book.

I'm not even going talk about the online and work-related projects.

Major project at the moment - apart from the continued promotion of Murky Depths (watch out for the small advert in SFX - Heroes For Sale in Inverness have just started stocking it) - is generating some buz about Richard Calder's adaptation of his critically acclaimed first novel (that was some 20 years ago) Dead Girls into a graphic novel. Leonardo M Giron's beautiful manga-influence art and creative input has generated a partnership that will make Issue #9 of Murky Depths (that's the issue the first episode will appear in) very collectable. And Issue #9 also features a brand new short story from Juliet Mckenna. But you'll have to wait until August!

I'm currently trying to tackle a project to make a creative commons City, by which I mean, I'm inviting people to submit concepts, designs, even full meshes of architecture within a "City" to see what happens, the idea being that it can be showcased, in mock panoramic and snapshots, to show what everyone submitted, what the final result was (the idea being that, if people can't submit models, I'll do the modelling, thus helping them realise their design, and get some much needed practice in).
So far, its struggling a little, due to some extremely bad foreplanning, and the amount of time I'm having to spend at work. I'm currently refraining from advertising it openly, as the idea, and the foundations need a little (LOT OF) work, but people are welcome to follow the link in my Profile.

I'm trying to find people to help me build up my new project. A donation and volunteer effort of comic writers and artists that I'm calling the Community Comic Collective Project. My bosses gifted me some webspace and a domain name, just have to build it now.

I'm also trying to grow into the shoes of being the Executive Editor of Chief Mac Media and wondering when a paying Editorial gig comes in. Cause, I need to pay rent next month. And I don't have time to do anything else. Maybe finding a sugar daddy would be a good thing to slip into this plan.

Just to be a monkey wrench, a simple story I was writing turned into this hundred + page Godzilla beast that I am now in the process of converting to a comic script. It's a beautiful angelic, gothy, cyberpunk, industrial, seedy, sex driven drug induced coma that lived in my brain until a game of In Nomine kicked it out. Now, finding the artist to work with me in making it real.

Activities for the rest of the dethaw depend upon cash moneys and motivation to travel.
I'm thinking Chile in July if there is a heavy winter onslaught on the southern hemisphere.
If climbing and/or the baltimore break scene are going well I may stay local.

Well I've started a new indy press based out of west texas. (www.nerdboycomics.net)

Our flagship comic is Zombie-Cow, and yeah it's exactly what it sounds like.

Most of my time will be distributed between pounding my head against my desk because my team of editors and writers like to see how far they can push me till I scream and pounding my head against my desk till my writing gets better.

Fun for the whole family.

Oh, and one more thing, the only thing that I am absolutely certain will happen (unless it doesn't): local 72 Hour Film Festival is the first weekend in May, so we will be making at least vague plans for what to do in the near future. Complete the one story I'm working on now for class, whether it stays a poem or turns into a short story, novel or play (comic book would be keen, but I'm just learning the other forms, and don't want to take that on yet);
Work on the 2-4 other plays that need work, as my skills get better;
Hope that the one short play I let out into the wild wins a staged reading (yes, this is all what playwrights hope for, unless you've got cash to produce yourself);
Survive five-plus months of scary medical preparations;
And, slowly work on de-cluttering my place.

I need to overhaul my art collective's website and make press kits for it, then start soliciting galleries all over the world to show our fabulous artwork. There are a lot of great shows we want to put on and no space to show it in. Also got to learn the fine art of obtaining corporate sponsors by networking with folks who actually have such things.

I also want to learn texture mapping and how to paint 3D characters so that I can form an animation/rendering studio with my friends. Plus get our first iPhone game to make thousands of dollars so that the guy who hired us to make it pays us to stay home, drink and render for the rest of our lives. I learned that I'm terrible at rendering, but that I have two guys who are great at it. If I can pick up the slack with the coloring, we'd be a pretty great team.

Thirdly, I want my damn screenprinting studio up and running.

The main project, and one I find it hard to find any enthusiasm for (but plenty of fear) is finding a new job. I'll be unemployed in May if I don't. So I'm looking at the small number of jobs I think I'm qualified to do with trepidation, misery, and growing panic.

The other project is re-educating myself. Thanks to some good fortune I have in-depth tutorial videos for Dreamweaver, InDesign, Quark, Photoshop and Illustrator. I don't have the programs (except for Photoshop), and won't have any proper experience with them, but I'll know how to use them. Right now I'm desperate for something to add to my CV, which is threadbare, even though "I know how to use Quark" is a bit of a fiddle as it should read, "I've never used Quark but I could wing it if you give me the chance." Of course, these videos are epic in length, and I'm not finding the time to watch them. I've got time for this post, though.

I've also got to figure out how to deal with a recent medical diagnosis. The psoriasis I thought was only afflicting my scalp is actually far worse, and is the cause of my aches and pains. Psoriatic arthritis. Lovely. Of course it's only manageable, not curable, but I think I can handle that. The worst thing is stress makes it flare up. As you can imagine, joblessness is not helping my state of mind.

The project I want to spend the most time on is a YA novel I've had in my head in planning format for a couple of months now. My wife is in publishing and after she told me about the gaps in the YA market I figured I should try to fill them. I've come up with something I really like, and think I can turn it into something entertaining, but finding the time to do it (and the chance to quell the constant discordant alarm bells ringing through my head) is the problem. Every time I sit down to a computer I have to look for jobs, and doing anything else seems like a waste of time (except this navel-gazing, which is essential brain-maintenance).

But I have to do it. It's about time I became a writer instead of thinking I'd do it in the future. Reading everyone's posts in this thread are inspiration enough to know it's not a mountain to be climbed, but a road to travel along, and for that I thank you all. Mr. Ellis' advice to start small is helping too. Writing something light and fun should be the best tonic.

ETA: I must also watch the second half of John Woo's amazing Red Cliff. If anything will cheer me up, that will be it. I also need to unlock Master Exploder by Tenacious D on Rock Band 2. I appreciate this is a trivial thing, but it's the reason I bought the game so damn it, I'm gonna play that fucking song!

Just thought up a new one after going through the really great Photographers thread that Warren started. I'd like to do some photography to use in a comic, with miniature sets that I build in my basement and my roommates (wearing costumes) as models with crazy lighting... I think that I could do something like that... For some reason, I'm imagining it looking like stills from the modern Doctor Who.

Seconded. My current job finishes in a couple of months and I'll be desperately needing work when I get back to Melbourne.

Working on some illustrations with/for my friend. One for an orangutan related St Pat's day thing, the rest are for flipcharts about various illnesses, featuring lots of sick kids, pooping and vomiting. We have been having far too much fun drawing these and I'll post them somewhere when they're done (if I'm allowed).

Lots of small personal projects I don't have time for and keep forgetting about. One other project for a friend that I also don't have time for and feel really about neglecting. Wait, I'm not really working on those, so they don't really count. I intend to though!

Well, Kemper's polishing up his cattle prod ready to start rounding up contributions to the next Kemper Norton Collective compilation, so I've got packaging to design/hack out of wood/glue together out of sacking and stickyback plastic (or what ever other crazed idea he comes up with).

A friend/fellow member of the Collective has promised to show me how to make basic stop-frame animation, so I'm hoping to put together a brief little video I've been planning in paper cut out form.

I too have to try to get my head round Illustrator at some point, and I have my thesis to work on.

Oh, and I've decided that what my life is really missing is a Girl Genius style skirt & waistcoat suit, so I'll be putting together a pattern for that.

I predict that approximately 25% of this stands a chance of being achieved, and that 20% of it will be Kemper-related.

In fact, a friend of mine who is attending a local communitiy college discovered that thier text book was from this site, I beleive. Anyway, still plugging away at my novel. Hopefully by the end of May I'll be near the end.

As for new beginnings, started on an outline for a comic with a friend of mine last week, so now we just have to hammer on the outline some more to see what comes loose and then get to writing. If we could have it mostly written and have found someone to do the art by the end of May I will be extremely happy and surprised that we actually managed to pull something together in a decent amount of time.

I bought a domain, Clockwork's Corner, and will be posting content regularly (every other day or so) starting in early April. Right now I'm writing a bunch of posts and setting them to go live on different days.

Some content will be completely random but I'm gonna have a bunch of regularly occurring features that I hope will encourage people to return. For instance, on Mondays I want to have something called Memory Lane Mondays where I share some memory from my childhood and encourage others to post their own. I'd also like to review products occasionally and post good shopping deals when I see them.

I'm not a designer or anything so for now I just picked a theme that's usable and halfway pretty. I know if I start messing with all that CSS stuff I'll get bogged down and never post new content.

I'm currently making an on-line comic called 'The Seeds of Orcus'.

Its a story about a gang of young inter-galactic refugees who survive a crash-landing in Rendlesham forest at the height of the Cold War. They get picked up by the US Air Force in Europe, and incarcerated by the UK Ministry of Defence at a secret army base on Rathlin Island. It's a kind of Sci-Fi prison escape story.

It's an unusual webcomic because it uses photography and pre-rendered 3d models for backgrounds, with digitally hand-drawn characters.

This is an ongoing, continuing project, and its also a way to improve my drawing skills, which, after several years of making 3d art as a freelancer, had been put on deep freeze.

I'm finishing the novella I started last year that's basically chronicling my 24 hours with a film crew as they speed to finish a five minute video for a cash prize. Stress mounts, shit gets crazy, and I have the time of my life.

My blog's turning 3 years old in March, so I'm kind of proud of that. I'm going to be starting to write for the Independent Comics Site again, and hopefully my boss will get the know-how/personnel to start Nerd Girl Pinups.com again, because frankly that was a kickass job.

- Start *and finish* a 6-page comic story
- Get my book-based project finished. That plan's been on the drawing board for a couple of months now already... Why is full-time work such an arse?

Well, it looks like my publisher has handed my next book to someone else. Fortunately they are on the other side of the pond, so while I ponder how to send them a particularly virulent strain of something unpleasant in the post, I am now free again for writing, editing, and code-tweaking. Anyone?

For some reason I have also agreed to start giving presentations on code, the thought of which is making me a tad queasy. Writing is fine, but sessions are LIVE. Gulp.

i bought a domain, www.restless.fm, but haven't put up any content. i'm going to redo it with jQuery instead of PHP, toss the flickr RSS feed and get some actual samples of my work in there.

i also just recovered some really old portfolio stuff (the actual inDesign files of articles i published and/or laid out) so maybe those'll fit in nicely.

otherwise i want to start working in new media again. it's frightening how little i know of the MSP part of Max/MSP.

Once I deliver this one show, my work week will go from 90+ hours down to something sane. There are two music videos & two short films shot and trussed, they just need cutting, vfx, etc.

One screenplay got started last week, first time as a collaboration! I should rewrite at least one of the others, but they're not worth the time just yet.

Checking back in... hmm. Not much progress since last time. Character writeups and rule boildown for the summer festival game is coming along nicely, but playtest is still way off. Trying to get some people in similar circumstances together for ideaswaps and socializing.

The educational RPG company went belly up a week after deadline. Unneccessary, and annoying. The games were selling, things were apparently going well. Rumors of mismanagement. Know a few of the people involved. Want someone to blame. Maybe find out more later.

Putting together a 5-page project writeup for a postgraduate position by end of april. Will involve writing some difficult emails. What's the fancy name for Morbid Fear of Putting Your Nuts on the Chopping Block?

The rest mostly depends on me nagging at people. No spare time for nagging ATM.

Just started a podcast, with a friend, about comics and writing and various nerdery. We've never done a podcast before, so it's all basically a trial-and-error experience. We literally just met in my apartment, hooked two microphones up and started talking. That's episode 1 (which is split into 3 parts due to my learning how to edit sound files).

Working on forcing more of a format to each show, and building a central site to host the 'cast and provide links and information about what we're discussing.

UPDATE

So my Mage game is going pretty good, 4 games in.

This weekend I was thinking to myself, man I wish I could do this for a living.

About the same time, an old friend was thinking the same thing.

So we're putting one together, creating a game system, putting together the universe, and knocking shit out. We've already got access to a publisher, and access to wholesale dice.

So yeah, we're about to kick some ass.

I was going to register for Fall classes, but I'm just going to concentrate on this. I'm pretty pumped now.

It'll take some luck, last time my label organised an event for me to play in Stonehaven, at the last minute the council turned round and said they didn't want that kind of music playing! We had to refund every ticket sold!

Writing a comic inspired by Givenchy's "Western Bondage" show last fall, which interpolates the old west with BDSM in a psychedelic jaunt down fun times.
Also doing a comic about ghosts who ride zombies in the future.
And making cover art for a series of singles that a local band is doing.

Amongst many other things. But those are the principle actions right now.

Oh and I'm doing a series of one page comics with a handful of diffrent artists to be placed on the internets. They're very much in a Little Nemo/Bunuel fashion.

Finding myself writing a lot of horror lately. Which I had never done before a year ago.

Update:
So, out of three scripts/projects started...

the first one, the 300 page fantasy thing is all written (and waiting for rewrites and a larger scanner so I can draw it on A3 paper).

Second one still sitting as a raw plot. I need to find lots of useful reference images if I want to move on.

Third one, second volume of my webcomic, is currently being written by me. I'm at about 40 pages of the actual script (usually doing 5-6 panels per page) and the rest is loosely plotted. Hoping to be done at the end of April and I'll be drawing it as the first of these three.

Finally telling myself to put up or shut up and beginning to unleash the fiction I've been working on for the last few years - Posted as a loose web serial here, updated once a fortnight or more often if the interest is there. Got enough pieces to fill that schedule for the next year and a half and writing more all the time (like when I'm in work on Easter Sunday instead of celebrating the birth of Chocolate Jesus).

Also, trying to decide on a design for my first ever tattoo, giving up smoking (again) and figuring out how to cope with all of the above plus fatherhood.

Since my previous post about things I intend to do, I have...

a) Acquired several Adobe programs, including Dreamweaver and Flash. Attempts to educate myself in the usage of these things is going slowly, but it's going.

b) Done no writing, but have come up with a couple of new ideas, refined some old ones, and found a new use for an idea stuck within an unfinished novel from years ago.

c) Applied for very few jobs, but sent my CV off to magazine publishers in the hope they will take a chance on someone with no published writing to his name. This happens, right? (Please don't respond to this question, Whitechapelers. I know the answer but am running out of ideas.)

d) Unlocked Master Exploder on Rock Band 2, and it is awesome. I have also completed almost all of Rock Band on Hard (guitar). I am proud of this pointless accomplishment.

I've not yet dealt with the painy joints, though I'm considering taking up meditation to remove the stress that is making it flare up. It's about time I calmed my nerves.

- quit smoking after 22 years.
- created mad_hattery, a LiveJournal community about hat making, collecting, trimming etc that was to have 50 members in 3 years. It went way beyond that and we've had a hat trimming competition already.
- faced a life-long needle phobia (no one ever worried I'd be a junkie) and begun visiting an Acupuncturist.

UPDATE!

We had to change our game company from darkStar Games to XOMBI Games, too many people using darkStar. Other than that, things are going smoothly for our indie zombie RPG. XOMBIGAMES.COM is up, we're using a wiki to organize our thoughts, which will then be published into a book through lulu.

Tomorrow I'm buying the cheapest of Wacom tablets.

Um, I watched DVDs and BREAKING BAD. Does that count?

Hope that the one short play I let out into the wild wins a staged reading....

Well, today was sitting in on my first auditions for my work EVAH, and since my director (Yes! I have one!) had to deal with an illness, I sat with the actors as they read, and took notes. Casting is prejudice (but used on the whole for good); headshots are so cruel (and pretty). But there's a long way to go...

As for the health and de-cluttering tasks: Ongoing.

Complete the one story I'm working on now for class, whether it stays a poem or turns into a short story, novel or play (comic book would be keen...)

This is where I need HELP. Another story is being published online, and the publisher's thinking of turning it into a graphic novel. I've read up about comic book contracts online, but I'm only seeing the most general of advice. Does anyone have any good links about contracts, especially for creator-owned work? If I'm not going to get massively paid, then I'd like to keep the rights, especially for non-comic books.

This month I hope to make a serious start to two writing projects I have been thinking about for along time now.

One which is still unnamed is a children’s book with a slightly return to oz darkness to it, I have started working it out with a good friend of mine who has been itching for me to write it ever since I told her the general idea, seeing as she was so exited and was coming up with some good ideas it only seems fair to bring her onboard make it a co-written project.

Lastly a project called Reaper Heights, I posted some stuff awhile ago about it but since then the artist has vanished and I was left spinning in a world of uncertainty about the whole thing, this time I am taking a more professional approach, just need to work through my crushing self doubt.

A couple of projects at the moment.

1. Working on a pair of goggles that integrate camera lens filters as lenses; thus, interchangeable, customizable, fun. Base unit is done, now I just need to trick it out.

2. Banging away at the novel.

3. Expressive installation-art kind of piece utilizing electrical wiring and switches integrated with emotional and cognitive concepts. I have the wiring skills to pull this off, unsure about the art skills.

I have so far: moved flat, which meant I could do another thing on my list which was: purchase and use a sewing machine. The purchasing has been done, some rusty sewing has taken place. A weekend in my future beckons for proper set up of a craft corner. I finished and submitted my masters thesis *and* updated my portfolio to the point where it has content (inc. said thesis) and while I have not written any law librarian articles (have in fact fled law libraries), I have seen the biggest project I was involved in to the end - we launch next week at the big sector conference. And my new sector work has meant that I now have two projects that have gone live that I can point at and say: me, I coded that.

And I've actually be hellishly crafty recently, by making shit to send to people. The haul so far includes magnetic buttons, a tiara and bathsoaks. More are in my future along with setting up my goddamn etsy store - I will set it up, dangit! - and srsly pulling finger on the public craft drops.

Wow, I essentially failed at all of my spring goals.

Haven't touched the art collective web site, never did learn 3-D rendering proper (though we did release the iPhone game) and I *still* don't have a screenprinting studio.

However, I'm 4 weeks shy of completing my first year as a freelance artist. I have more than enough work to keep myself busy and I'm really happy doing the work that I do. It might jump around and I lose track of my goals in the pursuit of paying the bills by any means necessary, but it's the best damn job in the world right now.

The first novel to feature my illustration work inside is due out tomorrow from Apex Books. It's "Prime" by Nate Kenyon, a Neal Stephenson-esque science fiction murder mystery, for which I did four interior illustrations (see sample below). It's a real step forward for me as a freelancer, and it was fun job to work on.

To self publish, mostly using the photobook feature of shutterfly.com, my own children's book. Depending on how well it comes out, I intend to pitching it. I have already done a dummy @ 8x8 but I encountered unwanted cropping during the print run.

The Shutterfly.com Photobooks come out remarkably professional and polished for $15.99.

I will be working on it during my freetime for the next few months.

Update and look back.

Well I did the articles for the most part, never started either short story, though I did work on two others instead. And only got a part time gig instead of an internship... I guess not horrible.

Have also been writing scripts for a web series that should be filming in the next few weeks, the holder site page is up here it looks crummy because my Dreamweaver crashed and I haven't been able to resurrect it, so I had to use the blasted template which SUCKS. Also have a MySpace and a twitter account as well. A teaser should be filled this week though so actual content in maybe two weeks! Yay!

A busy month is followed by a busy month.
Krista and I are finishing up the first issue of Virtuoso, a comic about the viral nature of technology (also women in armor riding dinosaurs). The website will be launched soon, then we'll be putting together the submission packets for a few publishers.
On my front I'm doing some artist hunting for two other horror projects, writing a couple short stories, starting on another comic script, and I just might put a book proposal together, but that's very nebulous.
I'm also doing modeling for Lastwear, have a photoshoot coming up on Monday for that, have to get ready for Steamcon (which might include setting up a fight scene).
On the personal front I'm going to try to make it to kenjutsu class more often, make it out to the club when I can, and continue hanging out with the stunningly cool people I've met up here in Seattle.

Update: All three scripts written (well, one needs one more scene but I can't do that until I have the next volume worked out, nevermind the details). As for drawing... well... the project that was going to be my weird mutation of 24 hour comic (300 page graphic novel in a month, ten pages a day) turned into a regular graphic novel, turned 3/4 volume graphic novel and is about to turn into a 10 issue series (each issue at 48-50 pages). Right now I'm stuck at the problem of choosing color/b&w.
The other two... one is still waiting for a larger scanner (so I can easily design everything as a doublespread) and the other is on hold as I have to redraw volume 1.

The goal was finishing the scripts and drawing at least part of one of these. So... a partial success?

Boodoffstage, brewing your own beer is super. The project I was just about to post about was my new kegerator. I helped my roommate build his, but I feel like I can do much better. Right now I have a 25cu. ft. chest freezer (that's 4 half barrels side by side with room for ponies in between) and the temperature controller on the way. A restaurant is closing in a town a few hours from here and selling their draft tower with 8 taps and glycol cooling for a pretty reasonable price. Once I get that it should be smooth sailing. Just need to figure out a wood for the bar top. Right now I'm thinking cocobolo. Collllllllllege

All of my projects have ground to a near halt. Hard to get animated and/or prioritize when no one is pushing me or there is no deadline. Since I last wrote I did the stage managing but that's over and done. Submitted a play to direct next year for company I've worked with, still waiting to hear back. (Not being a company member I don't feel I have very high chances.) I've written just a tiny bit more on the novel and found that I don't know how to give it the ending it needs. I need to do a complete rewrite anyway, as I discovered the major arch won't work the way the structure is now. Not annoyed by that, started the novel at NaNoWriMo - and I hit 50K thankyouverymuch - but it is a little tough to force myself to sit down and write when I already know what happens.

Oh anyway.... Did start talking with an artist about a comic. I've never done one so I don't know how eager she would be to work with me. Neither one of us has any money so I have no idea how this would go. I should bug her for a hard yes or no and get writing.

Met with a friend to research the structure of yet another story. He helped me out but also made me see what a massive amount of work is still in front of me. And how even the work alone isn't going to insure the project ever sees the light of day.

Lemme see, update time on the old...

1. Illustrating a short story written by a friend involving Alistair Crowley in drag. This is for publishing. - Turned into a freaking novel so we started on a different story, but the person who took over running the collection and publishing side from me turned out to be the worst person to do it and we're no longer submitting.

2. A gallery submission for oztaku - Gallery display got canceled

3. I think, given time around uni, weddings, and art-with-a-deadline, I'll be getting started on a series of related peices that are buzzing round in my head. - Bwahahahahaaaa FAIL. I've moved three times since I wrote this original post...

So what's actually happening at the moment:

Researching, writing, and gathering the things and people required to get a piece of comic work and a magazine off the ground. This may yet be made of FAIL being that I still, two months later have not been able to get my co-conspirator to actually read his fucking mail. That said I'm still working on it even if he's being a dick.

Ditched the accounting degree and start a fine arts degree next month. Much happier, and finally enthused about something I'm doing with my life. Working on bringing my "skills' back to an appropriate level and cursing that life drawing classes are so bloody expensive on a weekly basis when you only work part time. So projects = folio of life drawings, sketches and still life works in various mediums. I'm thoroughly enjoying this.

Planning for the Burning Man Australia Seed has begun amongst myself and the other person I have confirmed I'll be dragging up north with me. This will be an ongoing one for at least the next 6 months, then off to Europe for a few weeks and back in time to do final prep.

My final project is convincing my boss that allowing me to do my cert 4 in business administration is not a waste of time and money because this would put me in a great position to get a job I actually want to go to in 12 months time.

First time somebody's ever drawn a comic I scripted - exciting!

Also yesterday I finally put pen to paper on a novel that's been fermenting in my skull for what must be nearly a year. As soon as my zillion assignments, uni theatre production and wisdom tooth surgery are out of the way I'm going to make a wordcount schedule for that. It's been a while since I've started something large, let alone finished it, so that is. A thing.

I checked my first post on this thread:

Finishing my flash animation, completing the second draft of my story "Ares", updating my blog regularly, not going mad.

Animation is predicted to be three minutes long. "Ares", 25000 words at least.

Ha. Hahaha. "25000 words". HahahahahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

At least the flash animation was finished and published and my website has been updated regularly throughout the year, not to mention the other website I write for, WHORE ISLAND. "Ares" went through the complications of going from a short story, to a story, to a novel that requires quite a lot of research, to losing everything when the file was corrupted, to starting over again and swearing a lot. I know exactly how to continue it and I think the research paid off and the science bits are believable, but I have been sidetracked by a graphic novel script (which I finally decided to abandon until "Ares" is finished) and a children's play (I think I'm finally getting around to saying I'm writing a children's play without suffering seizures), and that one I must finish within this month, so writing of "Ares" will resume next month. If I dedicate myself to it and forget to have a life (and, occasionally, eating) I might finish the partially revised second draft before the year ends.

i have two new albums released within the next month or so...

the first is a split cassette on AghartA tapes out of Lithuania. i have one side and a (i think Norwegian) project called bruzgynai has the other.

the second is a cd on my own Quiet World label of a meditative drone piece i created combining my own music with a set of field recordings made in the mountains around Tucson by a friend named Banks Bailey. an earlier collaboration we made can be dl'ed here and the album of his unadulterated field recordings that i released on QW last year will be available for free dl from the site later in the month.

After a month of slamming my head on PHP, the website is finally overhauled and the issue galleries updated.

So I celebrated my first free day of actual productivity by completing a 96-page screenplay and drawing half a page of "Li'l Sammy Swift".

Thank you. I usually prefer visual gags for Pitch Black, which is why I'm not very satisfied with this three-part series (of which you read the second part, the third still unpublished), but I'm posting it for the sake of variety.
