I'm an am photographer who does some professional gigs on the side. My other job (EPKs for bands) takes up more of my time so I haven't dedicated too much to photography lately...but hopefully that will change.

I'm a photography major attending the Southeast Center for Photography Studies in the Sates. It's my second semester now. I switched from illustration (wanted to be a comic book illustrator since I was 10 and found out it was actually a job). I'm building a small website, but waiting until I have some better prints under my belt before advertising myself. For now I started a Flickr account specifically for the work that I plan to put on my site. It only has two at the moment. By the end of this semester a professor that has really taken me under his wing is going to go through all my images with me and help me edit them out. Flickr
I'm in the merit program at school and one of my Holga prints is being put up in permanent instillation in the building this week. I've never had a gallery show or anything yet so that's pretty huge for me. This is the print:

I suppose I'd fall under the "pro/am" category of photographer. I'm currently in college for it and have made some (but not much) money at it. My web presence is all over the place right now though.

My unrelenting and probably unhealthy focus for the past couple of years has been in analog (film) using a 35mm SLR and several "toy" cameras including a Holga 120N.

I suppose dedicated amateur fits me pretty well. I have done a couple of actual photoshoots, but I haven't charged anything for them, so... amateur. I shoot mostly digital, but will probably make a transition to film as soon as I can afford a proper darkroom. All my shots are sent to my Flickr, which is here. I have little use for an online portfolio these days, so I haven't got one.

This one's from a band rehearsal, shot with 400 ISO Tri-X film. The scanner I used was really dusty, pardon the poor quality!

This one's from my latest shoot. Pretty boring, I guess, but I was very pleased with how the lighting and colour tone turned out.

Hola.

I just do this as a hobby, although currently unemployed and dreaming. I am a purely digital kid, and find film a strange and unsettling world. I shoot with an entry-level Canon DSLR. I feel I have never got the hang of taking pictures of humans.

I will go ahead and take this thread as my opportunity for my first post. My name is Ross, I am a college student in Florida. Here are my very amateur photographs done for two different classes. Intro to Photog and Experimental.....

These first three photos were taken using push processing in very low light...

my first attempt at blending photos, thought they went well together wasn't really trying to send a message though but I was called pretentious for this photo already! yay.

had to shoot a fairy tale subject....one guess as to who that is

and this is my first attempt with a digital camera and post processing....still learning all of that.
But yeah those are some of my photos, sorry for flooding the page.

I like traditional photography. I've got a nice 35 mm I bought for a Black and White class my last semester of college. I want to get a macro-lens so I can take some better close up insect and reptile pics. I don't have any of my photos scanned but I've got a few framed around my house. My favorite was a close up of a "grandaddy long legs" against a starkly pale leaf...I have his eyes reflecting the light...it's neat...(I feel lame describing it and not posting it but my scanners not working currently)

I am however going to be getting digital copies made of my dad's old film. When I was an infant my dad, mom, and I traveled all over Europe, visiting all the sites. I ended up going to museums, castles, and other awesome places that I can't remember. My dad took a bunch of pics and I've kept the film for the last twenty some years. We dug them out recently and coincidentally my dad mentioned getting them printed.
Once I do I'll post a bunch of them. They were really nice.

(my original Nikon FG was stolen many years ago) But I do think the classes I took in college helped me with composition and all that stuff.

Here are some of my favourites:

I call this "The Tranquility of Solitude." It was a lucky snap, shot from the hip almost.

A group of my friends and colleagues, taken at a gig we played in Prague (I play bass, but not in this shot).

I love shooting urban decay, and I'm trying to get permission from my local council to shoot in some of the derelict buildings along the waterfront. This was taken in an abandoned retirement home, and is part of a set that can be found here.

I'd call myself a passionate amateur. I got it in my blood, lack in funds. When my dad's Nikon manual gets passed onto me, that'll change that. But I also long for a decent digital camera. I prefer b&w over anything else, but colour certainly has its applications.

Great work everyone! Last night while canvassing, I was in the home of a couple. While she was getting her checkbook, I noticed a painting. No, not a painting--a picture she took one morning in Tuscany. I just about died. It was so lush, with the mountains and the water and dark green trees. She had a nice eye for pictures.

A few people might just recognize my name from an early Transmetropolitan issue (remember the "Name the Cat" contest? I didn't win but I did get a mention).

Amateur at this point, though I've done a good deal of sports photography around minor league baseball with credentials and my goal is to get paid for it someday. I also love going out to shoot landscapes, nature, things like that and plan to play around with a Kodak Jiffy Six-20 my grandfather bought in 1940.

Tom from Seattle here, I am a total amateur. I take photos for fun and to keep a record of where I go to help me remember, memory is so fickle. I take photos for a Tumblr Project : 52Locations, it is a group of about 50 photographers from around the world each week we post 3 or 4 photos from a different location. The poster below was one of my entries this week.

Dedicated amateur here. I'm out every weekend getting into abandoned spots, climbing under bridges, hiking through the woods, and trying to go everywhere that most people won't. I'm hoping for a gallery showing this year, but won't hear back about that until early April. It started as a hobby, but it's become a passion. I'm a social worker for Children's Protective Services in Pittsburgh. I've been doing photography for the past 4 years in an attempted to do two things.

1. To show the world what it's like to be a social worker. There are those that see us as saints, there are those that see as people that like to bust up families. Trust me, we're neither. The best of us are trying to hold back the sea, the worst of us are pissing in it and laughing at the first group.

(also, part of my job has me photographing deplorable housing conditions and child injuries. Worthwhile, but soul crushing. I want to have fun with this, dammit)

2. Pittsburgh is one of those towns that has been teetering on the edge forever. Everyday, I meet someone that tells me how boring and terrible this place it. Mostly, these people are boring and terrible, and are incapable of having fun unless it involves cable and 30 minute increments. It's a strange and wonderful city, and I love it deeply.

Anyway, here's an old shot from my Flickr stream that sums these sentiments up.

I quite nearly became a photojournalist, ha, thank God I didn't. I guess I'm a "dedicated amateur", but really it's just a side effect of living with a professional photographer (who is also a photojournalist) and having shot for the last decade or so.

My Flickr, as I document tonnes of stuff with pictures, is easier navigated for pretty things by surfing my collections. The few photographs on my portfolio site are of things I've made, rather than images in themselves.

Trained Pro. Hampered a little by dislike of shooting people, but I get over it when I need to. I prefer still/found/dead/dereliction, abstract and plants.
My real passion is for the post-processing, digital editing, touch-up side of things. I am an Improver.
To really test myself I have agreed to two wedding shoots this year, after that I may well be fearless.
Currently undertaking a 365 project whilst I earn bill money in other ways. This is also to help me post more things online, as I have tonnes of images that never see daylight.

I've been shooting for over 10 years. Had a collection of my earlier black & white nudes published by a subsidiary of Goliath Books back in 2005 called PRIVATE SKIN.

Been working towards refining my style lately. A few samples including a couple very new pieces.

Is there anything below amateur? I would have said I'm little more than a tourist/dilettante, but I'm starting to feel like I've walked out of the house without my pants on if I forget my camera. For several months recently my camera was broken and it felt just awful without it, eventhough it's a cheap little Canon. Forever I'm going to be sad that I have no photos of New York in the snow because of this.

Anyway, I use Fotki for posting photos the most/longest. It's a bit random, some pics being serious about being a good photo (see especially the Misc. album), some far more casual (e.g. "people"). I'll be updating going forward with more stuff from New York from the summer and fall.

I shoot digital only, as the cost of film was killing me. Haven't missed it. I've shown nationally and once internationally, which was a total trip. Traveling with pictures of naked women in my luggage is one of the highlights of my life.

I've been shooting seriously since 03, went pro in 05. The first couple of years of the gig were a bit of a grind: going on as many shoots as possible, shooting as many setups per day as possible, then doing post-processing as quickly as possible to author the final product and get it into the clients hands.

Since then I've moved on to coordinating whole projects and am less hands-on in terms of creating individual images. One of the best aspects of that development is that satisfying my photo bug now forces me to pursue my personal work. These days I'm most enthusiastic for landscape, though I dig macro and non-representational stuff as well.

With my work-for-hire being seen and evaluated by a whole bunch of people I haven't been in a hurry to publish my personal work, and instead have focused on woodshedding. In the near-term future I should be establishing more of a Web presence and making some prints, probably offering some for sale but the economics of that whole endeavor are an unknown to me.

I'm an amateur photographer, I've been taking pictures for...20 years or so. I use some of my better shots for gifts, had a couple recently accepted by schmap for their Detroit and Chicago guides (very flattered). I'm more interested in filling my frame and fun angles than I am in the true technical aspects of photography.

For my more "serious" shots, I stay with film (currently Canon Elan7ne, used many over the years), but for the less serious, spontaneous shots I use my little kodak digital camera (V1003 10MP). Here's my very incomplete flickr page (I have dial-up so I don't upload or share much). My Dad and sister are far superior photogs to me (they don't have flickr pages, sadly), I'm really enjoying this thread, some great stuff to see from everybody!

EDITED TO ADD: was I supposed to mention my background/training? I dont have any, and I'm not a pro as I don't think I've ever been paid for anything I've created in way of photography. My mother had a darkroom all while I was growing up, but I wasn't permitted to use her cameras. I only ever used disposables until I found a brick sized Sony Cybershot in a cafe 2003, which I started trying to figure out in 2004. I used that as my only camera until I got my digital SLR last year.

Semi pro I guess? I work a day job at a photography studio in NYC that will remain nameless... I shoot\assist for them but mainly do digital retouching. I've also done the random freelance job here and there but my real enjoyment comes from my personal work that centers around hdr panoramas recently. I've had to scale the images down for here and flickr, most of my photos work out to being about 3ft long and 100mb+ files. If you would like further nightshots of the same city, I recommend sneaking up to the graveyard. The view is best from the top of one particular mausoleum, if you can get to it. They've got the place rigged with motion-sensors nowdays.

I'm determined to remain amateur. I've sold a few photos and done a few sessions for friends, but always turn down commercial sessions. I toy with the idea of fine art photography though.

Tech-wise, I'm indiscriminate. Expired black and white is a favorite, but I love just about everything that can record an image, regardless of format.

Pro. In an odd way. I shoot a lot on the side and work during the day at a company in Toronto that rents VFX gear (Digital Blue, Green, Red Screens, Motion Control, 35mm & Vistavision VFX/Plate Cameras, Front/Rear Projection gear) and my passion for Photography has been growing like some kind of malignant tumor since I was younger. I did a lot of photography in Public School, a bit in High School then fell out of it for a bit until getting back into it more heavily with a 35mm film SLR. My passions for movies keeps pushing me into possibly trying to branch out and become a DP but time will tell on that one.

This is probably one of my favorite pictures that I have taken. Shot on my trusty Bronica 6x6 camera. Don Valley Brickworks in Toronto, I keep wanting to go back for another shoot but keep procrastinating and kind of wonder if I'll be able to get as many good shots as I did my first trip there.

I shoot a bit of everything and am a huge proponent of trying to do things in camera instead of in post and heavily favor practical, diy-ish, and often convoluted solutions to making that happen.I also shoot a lot of timelapse stuff at work and on my own. I shoot a lot of body modification related things, suspensions, my own tattoos or scarifications and the like. This is one of my favorite Bodymod related timelapses. At least of the ones that I have online. For some reason, I couldn't embed the video directly.

I have had some of my bodymod stuff on modblog a few times.

Not really a photographer, as most of the pics I take turn out BORING, but I wanted to tell everyone here how amazing their work all is, and felt weird about doing it without posting a pic, so the above is a photo of my house that I've very quickly made colorful in Corel Paint Shop Pro to show my roommate what different color trim would look like... which spiraled out of hand when they (my rm's) started shouting out things like "Flowers everywhere!" and "Pink roof!"

If you're wondering, the front door really looks like that, and we're in the process of painting the trim to actually look like that Mac and Cheese yellow/orange...

@thewaltonsare - There are pro shooters doing pro level work, selling to magazines, using point-and-shoot cameras. The gear is just tools, and as with any form of art it's the person using them that makes it work. Better tools make things easier, but if you don't know how to use them properly there's no point. I suffer from ridiculous gear envy, and it's pointlessly discouraging. Get out there and shoot with what you've got. Learn your camera's settings and how to manipulate light in your favor. Get as good as you can with what you've got and when you DO get better gear, some things may get easier but you'll still be taking great shots.

@ Angeldye - yeah, the quality of the pictures was pretty good, it was the on lag and shutter lag and battery life that killed me. But when seeing my pictures online, I used to get alot of questions regarding what kind of camera I used, and the reactions were always of shock. Ventura County...that was a one-day fire in the hills above Ventura, and I just happened to be off of work that day. Interesting story:

A guy came by my booth where I sell my pictures, asking what date it was taken. I told him I wasn't sure, but it was mid-November, 2005. He said, yep, that was the same day his father died. He bought a framed copy AND an unframed copy. His girlfriend/wife made a comment to the effect that the fire was the father having his revenge (over what, I didn't want to know). Weird.

As far as the lighting, I figured it was flash, but wasn't sure if it was camera-mounted or not. That's probably the best in-club shot I've seen in a long time, if ever. Nice one.

Speaking of Camera Models, is there a particular brand of Camera you guys would recommend? I'm thinking of getting a new one. Its going to have to be under 200 bucks, so I'm not expecting much, but mine is just... miserable, and I'm sure with new tech I could find something slightly more passable. Anyway, good brands of cheap-ish cameras?

@Munin We have the same set up! I have a d50 and an sb600. Haven't played with it off camera yet. How do you shoot off camera in a venue like that? Your shots are amazing, all of them. What lenses do you have? I've only got my kit zoom and a 50mm 1.8

@CinnamonAndSpite If you're just looking for a nice digital point and shoot, some canon powershots and nikon coolpix are in your price range and both equally fine products imho, despite the gay names. [I shoot nikon currently, but I've used both powershots and coolpix in the past] Go into a shop [even a best buy] and play with them, you might personally prefer one over the other. The difference between major brands is really only a big deal when you get into DSLRs and the way the lenses and bodies are built and priced.

@lexmachine I can't speak for Munin, but you can either use the flash handheld, on a stick, on a clamp/strap attached to something in the venue, or get an assistant to run around looking like a fool with a flash. Once, I saw a dude carry a couple light stands with him to a small club. It was a bad idea.

@CinnamonAndSpite I'll 2nd lexmachine's Canon recommendation. I've owned several Powershot/Digital Elph cameras over the last few years and beaten them to hell. Canon has excellent colors. I briefly owned a Nikon and while it took sharp photos, the colors weren't as nice, so I went back to Canon. This is largely a personal preference issue though, so for the price, you can't really go wrong with either. I can't recommend using Flickr's Camera Finder highly enough.

Thanks! Bloodroot is a hard to find flower here as well, but few years back I found a small cluster of them in a local park, and these buggers are still growing strong.

Thanks, COOP. I'm glad you liked it. You're quite badass, so I cherish the compliment. I wish I could say that that was the first time the cops rolled up on one of my photo shoots, but it was certainly the first time they showed up in force. Sadly, I didn't think to have one of them get into the shot until we had already broken everything down and they had left. Also, I should probably have mentioned in the original posting that the good 'ol boys shot was a promo for The Versificators spilt 12" with Bantha Fodder. So, consider that situation rectified.

Gremlin...he's....he's a big ol boy. At his fattest, he was around twentyfive lbs. He's down quite a bit now to about eighteen or nineteen pounds...he's also got what I'm assuming is Kitty Down Syndrome. He's too fat to fit into a normal extra large litter box, so he uses dog training litter pads.
Gremlin, or Gemmin...or often, Fatty Fat McFat Fat the Down Syndrome Kitty Cat is around seven years old now and is scared of the outdoors. He also mauled my left index finger once, (entirely by accident)... which was the downfall of my artistic career, as the damage he did caused my really nasty arthritis to set into my fingers....but we love him. he's a special kitty with special needs...

@ Osmosis - photoshopping old photos can be terribly rewarding. In a number of images on my site and book, I was able use my photo-fu which has grown far superior to my skills of 5 years ago. I finally got to bring out what I originally saw in a number of shots.

@ lexmachine - Been loving your fashion shots throughout this thread. Excellent stuff, the tones are superb. You asked where I took that picture -- it's from the West Lake in Hangzhou. It's a famed beauty spot in the area, lots of couples go there to marry (and get their wedding pictures done, I suppose ...). In the middle of the lake is an island which itself contains lakes -- so this is the inner lake.

@ rachaelnoel - I do have a big heap of photos still waiting to be gone through and tweaked. My photo-fu has improved, but I definitely have an itchy shutter finger! Thanks for your advice. I really appreciate it, as I'm a big admirer of your work. (spillover from Sat Open Mic: I sympathise -- I'm currently unemployed, living with the folks. Not a great situation. Let's keep our fingers crossed and make something happen!)

I feel like an idiot for having to ask this, but can anyone talk me through RAW versus JPEG? I shoot in .jpg, but was watching a (fairly leet but still amateur) friend spool through his workflow for some wedding shots, and noticed he'd shot in .raw. Is this something I should be doing? What format do you all shoot in?

I shoot in RAW.

While a jpeg is a jpeg and you get what you see, a RAW file is basically a digital negative. The key difference between a negative and a jpeg is that if you've grossly underexposed a negative so it goes really dark, it takes a lot more to make you lose the detail. If a jpeg is overexposed so the sky goes pure white, that's it, you're stuck with a featureless sky. However, if you overexpose a RAW file, you can pick some of that detail back in with some tampering in software that handles RAW. You can play a lot more with the contrast and colours and exposure than you could with a JPEG.

Extra bonus: The changes are saved in a separate file, so you don't run the risk of destroying the original if you do something with it, save and then come back to it. The separate file is only a few kilobytes, too.

The downside is that the weight of the file is about quadruple that of a full-quality JPEG, but you get so much back for it that it's definitely worth it if you're at all interested in photography as a real hobby. I resisted RAW for a long time, but after playing with Aperture (it's a mac thing) for a bit, I saw the considerable benefits of it.

Basically: A JPEG only contains what you see. A RAW is like a Transformer. Not a robot in disguise, but more than meets the eye.

If you'd like me to, I can cook up some examples of what I'm talking about.

PS: You can also use RAW for something called HDR, which is also very interesting, but not something you should think TOO much about if you're just getting into it.

I almost always shoot in RAW. In my opinion, It gives back some of the things lost in digital photography.
It gives you more editing options. You can create zone systems, and all sorts of other things.

Like Magnulus said... JPG files capture an equivalent to the visible light spectrum the human eye can see. RAW files capture all the light information, including things the human eye cannot see.

@Magnulus - true. I was trying to hide my normally blatant bias towards JPG as a shooting option. I personally feel that it is less than equivalent, but there are some that feel that RAW is cheating.
It is part of the odd anti-computer-digital photography mindset; the logic is that a JPG in manual mode is a sign of how good a photographer you are... of course this completely ignores the fact that you can adjust exposure, dodge/burn, and do all sorts of editing when making a good old film print.

I really only use JPG for online things, or when I fill up all my memory cards. As I just moved up to a Pentax K100D last night (still behind the curve, but works for me), I can now use larger memory cards... my old one could only handle up to 2GB.

Those who feel RAW is cheating must never have used regular negatives. You cannot do anything to a RAW image that you can't do with a negative through creative masking and burning, and you can even do MORE with a negative than RAW editing. Of course, it's HARDER on a negative, but that's a different discussion. The whole argument of "straight-from-camera" versus those who like to tinker (ie. ME) is almost as old as the technology of photography itself, and even older in some ways.

Being a good photographic artist is less about perfect control over the technology and more about conceptualisation and the end result of that concept. Or... actually... No. It's not more or less about any of those two. It's up to the individual artist to decide what kind of a photographer s/he is.

You should be shooting in RAW if you are at all serious about digital photography. As others have said, it's a digital negative, and allows you to do the same sorts of things you would do with a film neg in the darkroom. It does eat up memory, but memory is cheap - just carry extra cards.

I will say that learning to shoot manually is a good idea. Learning to shoot film is an even better idea. I shot film when I was a kid/teen, walked away from it for twenty years, but when I started to get serious about digital, all that old knowledge bubbled back up to the surface and gave me an advantage.

I resisted RAW for a long time, as when I first got a DSLR I didn't have the disk space or adequate software to deal with the files - I also had a fairly pig headed aversion to post processing, as when I worked with film I shot mostly transparency where there's no option to dick around with it after it's been shot (or when I used colour negatives I sent it away for someone else to hand print!). I'm over that hangup now though... But I got a copy of Nikon Capture NX whenI bought my D200 and have shot RAW ever since - I do an awful lot of tweaking in Adobe Camera Raw before the file's even in Photoshop.

I still shoot jpegs on my little Leica, partly because Adobe are the worst bastards in the universe and won't make Leica RAW files compatible with CS3 (and there's no way I'm paying the bloodsuckers another penny for CS4), I've got Capture One which will open them but I haven't got that figured out yet.

So yeah - RAW is analagous to a negative while Jpeg is analogous to a machine print, a lot of cameras allow you to shoot both at once so you've got the best of both worlds.

Granted, the whole sharing-aspect is simplified with JPEG, though as long as I'm not giving the files over straight from my camera, Aperture makes the whole RAW process a whole lot easier.

Personally, I think it's a shame they haven't managed to come up with a RAW-type standard image file so that people who are not that knowledgeable about cameras can still reap some of the benefits of RAW shooting. What would be the bonus of this, you say, if they don't know how to utilise it?

1: Many general consumers who switch to digital (I've helped many make that transition as I worked in a photo store) are disappointed with how easily they'll lose detail due to over/underexposure. If their images had greater depth than a JPEG, they would still get better images.
2: If they at some point LEARN how to utilise this, they would have a whole back-catalogue of images they can play with and improve upon.
3: "standard" equals "shareable". If you don't have to build different support for every type of RAW image, you'll get browser support, etc, making it much easier for people to share them, so it's easier to use.

Yes, now that I understand the difference, I realise that my entire output ever since I got my SLR is in a lossy, difficult format. A big shame when, as Rachæl Nœl said upthread, it's really fun to go back and use new photo-fu to doll up old pics.

I postponed my hike today due to a really terrible weather forecast (so, of course, it turned out to be the sunniest day all week), but I did take a few snaps around the garden and down by the river in RAW. They're downloading from the camera now, and my first thoughts are - these suckers really are big. The drop in available shots in-camera was savage, and I'm fairly sure that's why I didn't use the format from the get-go. Anyway, I'll shoop the whoop a little on these quick snaps and put 'em up here with any further thoughts.

Yeah - true - I meant in the sense that by shooting both together you've got the convenience of the jpgs (should you want happy snaps or quick shots for the web etc) plus the security of the RAW file without having to faff about converting RAWs.

"Compression" doesn't necessarily mean "lossy". Think ".zip" as opposed to ".jpg".

Everything I've read about it says that PEF uses lossless compression, so there's effectively no difference other than file size and the fact that PEF is Pentax's proprietary format and therefore perhaps a bit less futureproof than DNG.

I haven't done any side-by-side tests myself, but I did see one showing a difference in white balance. I'd be willing to bet that was due to the software used to process the file rather than the file itself, though.

Play with it. Personally, I prefer DNG, because my copy of PaintShopPro (keeping it legal and cheaper than Photoshop) won't open PEFs.

hmmm... I made the jump from film to digital with Pentax. I didn't want to have to buy all new lenses, etc...

The only options my cameras have had was JPG, PEF, or Tiff - I have never had the option of DNG. Never any issue with PEF files... I also use a Mac, so that might be part of it. I dunno. I just zip the files anyway.

Joncarpenter: I've been using the captureone software with my Dlux4, and I love it. In many respects it works better than CS3. It does take a little time to learn, but it's worth it. Of course, I pretty much shoot only B&W with the Dlux4, and the only time I open up the RAW files is if the jpeg is a little underexposed. (The B&W film setting on the Dlux4, combined with the phase one sensor, makes some sweet B&W straight from the camera.) this is a jpeg from the dlux4, with no post processing:

I was in Kensington Market in Toronto a couple weeks back and it was a very interesting place. The streets were vibrant and alive, there was artwork everywhere, the residence were all very friendly. Here's some pix I took that day.

I'll start out with a couple door pix. I love it when people give their door more than just a colour to match their apartment or house. The doorway is how we enter someone personal domain so it only seems natural for it to have some art to reflect something about that person.

I thought the text written here fits in nicely with the general feel of this community.

Aside from submitting things to the BBC News, I never really went for competitions. However, I was asked to compete in this, and now it seems I'm one of the finalists. (WHEEE!) It's not a big deal, I suppose... but I'm rather disappointed with the other competitors.

The competition stated: "... photographs that capture the true spirit of Brooklyn."

Most of the other pictures competing are of the Brooklyn Bridge of Coney Island or other places that are unimaginative, unoriginal, FAR too easy, and capture the spirit of NOTHING AT ALL.

So vote for mine. Because this is what Brooklyn tastes like.

(...or vote for the photograph of the people crammed on the Q train. I like that one, even though it's not mine. It has character.)

Spent the last weekend at the cabin site, geocaching and photographing the nature.

Rainbows, Kittens, Spiders and Bovines

The rainbow was the most spectacular I've ever seen, more pics in the album. Got to try and fix up a panorama, it's just waiting for a day when the skies outside are not cloudless and there's some time to sit indoors at the computer.

The goddamn cows were a bit too nosy and kept slipping me the tongue, so I had to quit searching for the geocache :>

I have had some brief experience doing things the old way, and sort of miss it.

Any thoughts or experiences on how to DIY without getting myself in too deep? (time and/or money)

I loved this tombstone . . . it was so different and seemed to have a joy to it that one doesn't usually find on tombstones.

Tomb of an unknown Civil War soldier. There is a huge Confederate memorial in our city's cemetary . . . ah life in the Southern US.

This is my first post.
About me:
I am a huge Dave McKean fan and I'm sure the influence shows.
I have been working in photoshop for almost 20 years and shooting photos for over 25. Lately, I have been using my scanner as a capture device. Most of the images here are from objects (artifacts) found in my yard mixed with an occasional negative scan. I call them my "Yardifacts Series". Final output is 20"x30" so detail is really insane. I welcome all coments. Thanks for letting me play in your sandbox.

B&W Polaroid (fujifilm 3000b, in fact) peelback negative, or "Goop" as it is sometimes known, scanned and inverted in photoshop. If you leave them out to dry while shooting with strobes, you sometimes get a nice solarization thing, but it's unpredictable.

Here's the actual photo, for comparison. Some folks flip the neg in photoshop, but I like the mirror-image.

amateur here but I love taking photos. I've got a friend who is trying to go professional and he's given me some tips on composition etc. I have a flickr site but I have quite a backlog of stuff I need to upload. Because flickr pro stores at original resolution I tend to stick everything up there - I post some of the ones I'm happier with on my tumblr

I currently have a Canon G9 which I love. I bought it as a bridge between a point and shoot and a DSLR, to see whether I'd actually get to know how to use all the bits and pieces. I'm hoping to buy a DSLR when I have the money, as I do find myself experimenting with the Canon.
