As previously mentioned, there's a ton of free stuff happening, unofficial and otherwise. Especially during the day, actually. I too live in town, but I think the only SXSW proper thing I'm considering is the Circle Jerks/HR Band/Echo and the Bunnymen show at Emo's.
@ racingpenguins - I've gone on three tours across the US with the Spankers since last June, but because of work/gig commitments here in town I'm not with them on the road right now :( I will be working with them again when they return, so if you want to catch a show sometime give me a heads up and I can put you on the guest list--we like to take care of our friends and affiliates.
I have to second those recommendations. Westin (tallest man ever) is an acquaintance of mine, and a good friend of mine does sound for the Spankers. They both put on phenomenal shows. The Shivers are playing a show with another really great Austin band, Shotgun Party, who are fantastic. Three-piece Texas-swing, jazz outfit. Tiniest Bar in Texas, on the 19th.
Also, Buttercup, from San Antonio, is a fun indie rock group that puts on one of the most enjoyable shows I think I've ever been to. They do strange things. It's quite charming.
And now, I'll weep bitterly for the platinum badge that I will never acquire, as I shuffle to the packed free shows.
Edited to add: I just realized @element53 IS that friend from the Spankers. *facepalm* Lurk moar...
@St.Bernard - I'm not surprised you know Westen. I've come to the conclusion that he knows or is acquaintances with 90% of the people in the greater Austin area.
Apparently Psych Fest 2 (Black Angels, Dead Meadow, A Place To Bury Strangers, The Warlocks, etc.) is running right before, from the 13th-15th. I may play hooky from my SXSW Interactive obligations to check out APTBS.
@racingpenguins, @st. bernard you guys know westen?! haha, my gf in austin works with him at big top candy shop on south congress. just met the guy a few months ago and he's a badass. been into the shivers for a while, excellent recommendation.

I feel like a weasel for self-promoting, but some friends of mine and I (all of us do electronic and/or rock music using repurposed and/or hacked early-generation home computers & game systems) are playing an off-SXSW show next Wednesday the 18th at an event called Datapop. Full info at http://www.datapopparty.com/ -- the lineup is
Anamanaguchi IAYD Graffiti Monsters 8BK-ok Nullsleep Bit Shifter Sievert
I believe the show is free, and I'm told there are free drinks too. Sounds too good to be true though so don't quote me.
