Been bad the last couple months about starting this thread, mostly because of stuff out in the really real world demanding their pound of my flesh, but I'm back now to get March going. Thanks to ...

Now I'll start us off with a quick sketch I did while drunk of Steven Grant's character, Whisper.



Also, I'm drawing supervillain couples between all my other projects as a personal challenge (was originally going to do 14 finished pieces throughout February, but got sidelined). So now I'm doing anywhere between 14 and 20 pieces that I'll post online whenever I get all the finished ones done. So until then, here's a sketchy version of Kraven the Hunter and Calypso. I dislike the way Kraven's background leg looks, but it's the most logical way I could think to have it. Also note how the piece looks like it was drawn by Joseph Michael Linsner... All the stuff of his we have up around the shop must be seeping into my brain (not that that's a bad thing, mind).

Re-inked the whole thing, kept the basic face and helmet, changed the hair, added the fur and the chain and the sword, rotated the composition, ditched all the colour fills, and added the red and orange colour holds. Hopefully the little changes I made don't screw up your original intent for the figure.
Also, if you want, here's the original inks as a 300 dpi bitmap TIFF, which is all ready to be brought into PhotoShop (or wherever) and converted to RGB or CMYK and colored, if you want to mess with it.

@Photomagex: For all the work here, I am inking digitally in MangaStudio. I used to ink with a brush, and got pretty good at it, having a steady hand and pretty good control. One of the reasons I was ...

@Frequent: Here's my drill for saving files to produce super clean end results:
1. Inks in MangaStudio are done at the 100% size at 600 dpi. Exported from MangaStudio as TIFF, 600dpi.
2. Opened in PhotoShop as RGB image, changed from RGB down to bitmap (keeping it at 600 dpi).
3. Once down to bitmap, switch resolution to 300 dpi for color version. While in bitmap form, do any sizing here to avoid aliasing. Once the black and white image is sized and rezzed, convert it back up to RGB mode as a PSD file.
4. Color away.
5. When done, I save a flattened TIFF version of the color work (for archives) and then save it as a JPEG file, still at 300 dpi.
6. Here's my technique for the cleanest web versions I've seen; Resize for web res in TWO steps; go to Image Size, click off "Resample Image" so that all three boxes (height, width, resolution) are connected by the chain icon; change resolution to 72 dpi, which will up the size in the height and width boxes. Click OK. Then open the Image Size dialog box again, click back on the "Resample Image" box, which will re-activate the pixel size fields up top. Enter in the pixel dimension you want (making always sure the "Constrain Proportions" box is checked for ALL of these functions!)
7. Save as JPEG file, with Image Quality at 12, and Image Options at "baseline optimized."

Seems like an extra step for the final sizing, but when I've done the res and sizing in one step, it always harshes up my image to a small degree. Remember that bringing the resolution down to screen res should always be the ABSOLUTELY LAST THING you do to an image. Work in high resolution as long as you are able. Also remember that resolution and size are connected; they are part of the same data in the image, hence why when you take off the resample image function the size goes up when the res goes down; you are just trading data back and forth, more for res, less for size, and vice versa. If you think of it like that, it makes more sense to res down as the last thing you do.

Okay, so here's my latest effort. I've never completed a digital painting before so (in spite of the many mistakes I can see in it) I'm pretty happy with it. I've been working with ink, watercolors and gouache lately, after having done mostly ink work in a class I took last year:

Most of the time there I tried just sketching on one small page in a moleskine notebook, just people in the club, objects, architecture, impressions of motion, anything that caught my eye while I sat there. I ended up with this:

Hello, all. I'll muck up the thread a bit since we're almost at the end of the month. I hadn't done any blind-contour sketches in a while, but reading Duffield's How-To-Draw essay got me inspired. Unfortunately, I seem to be a transitory period in my artistic growth. They are half-way between crap and success. Kind of an Occam's Razor, oh God NO effect going on. I'm going to start calling these 'melties':

I probably shouldn't go back over old territory so much, to start, but doing faces, that's where the interesting stuff is, so...

But what's gratifying is that I fuck these up the same way I fuck up all my figure construction, which is involuntarily expanding the face and hands because I slow down for detail. I can't get the hang of constructing heads out of basic ovals. I always start drawing features halfway through, and often when I finally finish, the head's ended up too big, and I just enlarge the body to match, because it's just as well, really. @PaulSizer - and thank you sir! Looking at your work as it pops up here and on dA has been a large motivator to me to get the gears going again. Your pieces are great, but it's the consistency and speed at which you work, and how much you clearly enjoy it, that has really been a kick in the rear for me. I'm putting my life in order to better facilitate making things every day.

@BrianMowrey - MELTIES! That brings back memories. I used to hate hate hate blind contour because of the mess everything became, but looking at other people's blind contour drawings is fun. You don't have the knowledge of what they were trying to draw, so you only see what came out, which is often very cool. Your first melty up above, for example, is a great character. You should take that one and try realistically coloring/shading it, and see what comes out. @ Andre Navarro - Another well executed, disturbing piece, I love it. I think in your last one, you went a little too light on the cel shading on the dark side of his face, but that's only my amateur opinion.

@ gzapata - Your last B x W of the guy playing the guitar is just stunning. The detail in the background buildings and seemingly looseness on the character is fab!

@ MrSmite - My cousin does a lot of found art work and although I've hardly seen any of it, when ever we are together he is picking up items off the ground to add to his collection. This is something to see such beauty and creativity come out of a discarded chunk of metal ans you really seemed to marry all the elements with your painting (subject and use of colours).

@ Suggymoto - Looks to me like you got the wacom shading thing figured out. You should tell us how it's done on the Art Tutorial thread. I'm still trying to figure out how to use mine to it's full capability.

@ Everyone Else - Keep it comin'. I love this thread and the WhiteChapel site. The quality of work. The similarity and differences of this community and yet all here seem like good people. A little messed up maybe, but aren't we all. That's what keeps it interesting.
