    All righty, here's my inks and colors on your pencils (sorry, I just couldn't resist):

    I kept the inks as true to your pencil sketch as I could, as well as the colors (which I liked the very neutral palette you made).
    Hopefully the little changes I made don't screw up your original intent for the figure.
    Also, if you want, here's the original inks as a 300 dpi bitmap TIFF, which is all ready to be brought into PhotoShop (or wherever) and converted to RGB or CMYK and colored, if you want to mess with it.

    I hope Kimieye doesn't get mad at me for doing a version of this, too, but Paul always has the most fun excersises... Anyway, I used to search Google images for pencil art to practice inking on (and ink art to practice coloring on...), so it was fun to ink someone else's work, again. Here is my interpretation. Stayed pretty much true to the pencil lines, save for a few personal flares. Switched up the colors a bit:

    Paul's images always come out so much clearer than mine... I assume it has something to do with how I resize/save my files. Oh well. Also, I see that I forgot to color the belt buckle. Whoops.

    @Photomagex: For all the work here, I am inking digitally in MangaStudio. I used to ink with a brush, and got pretty good at it, having a steady hand and pretty good control. One of the reasons I was so late to the digital inking bandwagon (and I mean actual inking, not just darkening of pencils in PhotoShop and calling it "inked", Rob Liefeld I'm looking at you!) was that I couldn't find a program that gave me the real ink line quality I was looking for. It came in the form of MangaStudio, which has the best inking tools I've ever found, hands down.

    @Frequent: Here's my drill for saving files to produce super clean end results:
    1. Inks in MangaStudio are done at the 100% size at 600 dpi. Exported from MangaStudio as TIFF, 600dpi.
    2. Opened in PhotoShop as RGB image, changed from RGB down to bitmap (keeping it at 600 dpi).
    3. Once down to bitmap, switch resolution to 300 dpi for color version. While in bitmap form, do any sizing here to avoid aliasing. Once the black and white image is sized and rezzed, convert it back up to RGB mode as a PSD file.
    4. Color away.
    5. When done, I save a flattened TIFF version of the color work (for archives) and then save it as a JPEG file, still at 300 dpi.
    6. Here's my technique for the cleanest web versions I've seen; Resize for web res in TWO steps; go to Image Size, click off "Resample Image" so that all three boxes (height, width, resolution) are connected by the chain icon; change resolution to 72 dpi, which will up the size in the height and width boxes. Click OK. Then open the Image Size dialog box again, click back on the "Resample Image" box, which will re-activate the pixel size fields up top. Enter in the pixel dimension you want (making always sure the "Constrain Proportions" box is checked for ALL of these functions!)
    7. Save as JPEG file, with Image Quality at 12, and Image Options at "baseline optimized."

    Seems like an extra step for the final sizing, but when I've done the res and sizing in one step, it always harshes up my image to a small degree. Remember that bringing the resolution down to screen res should always be the ABSOLUTELY LAST THING you do to an image. Work in high resolution as long as you are able. Also remember that resolution and size are connected; they are part of the same data in the image, hence why when you take off the resample image function the size goes up when the res goes down; you are just trading data back and forth, more for res, less for size, and vice versa. If you think of it like that, it makes more sense to res down as the last thing you do.

    I always love digging through these Artist's Threads here and on some of the other message boards. There's some fantastic work, and it's also amazing to watch some of the newer artists grow exponentially through the years.

    @ Paul Sizer - Thanks for the info. It seems like every artist has their own digital techniques that work for them and/or suit their style. I recently read an article by Dave Cooper about digital coloring that cut the time it takes me to color in half. If I am lucky, I know about 5 % of what Photoshop can do and I'm always looking for more.

    I've been using the "Randomized Album Cover Design" meme on Facebook as a warm-up exercise lately. I liked how this one turned out.

    @ Paul Sizer - I checked out a Album Cover Design exercise on facebook. I'm not sure if the rules or sources are the same as the the one you did, but I found it surprising how well all of the elements fall into place. I really didn't put any work into this, however it looks like a believable CD cover (band name and all).

    There's some really great stuff in here and a nice variety of styles going on. Always nice to see stuff from you, Kody. I love the effect you've got there with the charcoal powder.

    Okay, so here's my latest effort. I've never completed a digital painting before so (in spite of the many mistakes I can see in it) I'm pretty happy with it. Took me about 8 hours from sketch to finish. I'd love to hear what you guys think and if you have any tips of critiques to offer up I'd be delighted to hear them.
