    THRU YOU - A beautiful concept, brilliantly executed; seven songs consisting entirely of individually edited, spliced together unrelated clips from YouTube of people playing instruments or singing, bringing hundreds of people together to join playing music that they never knew could or would be made.

    Update: The site is having traffic problems and is not always available. MP3s can be found through RapidShare.

    The result can be compared to a video version of Amon Tobin, Quantic, or Bonobo, yet the THRU YOU stands alone and does not feel derivative; the informal nature of the sample settings gives the project an organic feel that many studio compositions lack. The work of 25-year-old Ophir "Kutiman" Kutiel from Tel Aviv, Israel had an emotional tone that took me by surprise; I was expecting a silly throwaway gimmick, not a complete, professional quality album that I could expect from a label like Ninja Tune.

    The credits for each video link to the source video, and the disclaimer makes it clear that the end product is not intended to be exploitative:

    Working OK for me, but a bit of buffering. Have we discovered the Whitechapel effect?

    This is fantastic. Reminds me greatly of DJ Shadow's /Entroducing/.

    A friend in an unrelated chat room just brought this to my attention. It feels almost like a counterpoint to DJ Earworm's United States of Pop 2008, in that each track is a mountain of samples made greater than the sum of its parts. Except here the parts are all amateur musical recordings created for the love of the music, and USP2008 is all professionally manufactured commercial garbage.

    (It also brings to mind The Whitechapel Orchestra, albeit more haphazard in it's selection of material)

    @DavidLejeune - Thanks, I hadn't heard of the United State of Pop 2008 before. It's... different, more of an exercise than art I think and it gets pretty messy towards the end. It does work, even if I don't really have references to all the source songs so I couldn't say if it was derivative or new.

    That really illustrates how the quality of a mash-up is not necessarily the sum of its components.

    Wow, that was 20 minutes of my life I'm glad to have lost (Make that 2hrs--this forum is fantastic)

    Never expected this and to think I got here via Warren's Brokencyde post...

    Now all he need to do is drop a Cd/Itunes release. I want these songs.
