There was, way back in the mists of... 2007... a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as... people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response in various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving. I think most people's favourite was the dear late Mike Wieringo's wondrous retro-aristo Buck Rogers...

I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character.

Photography and digital art is also fine, before anyone asks.

    The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.

    -----

This one is even more minimal than last week's. I want to really test your powers of invention. Jess Nevins, he say:

Woman With A Black Heart. This nameless mystery woman appeared in Fun and Fiction and Bullseye in the 1930s. She was beautiful, never revealed her true identity or background, and had a "mystic black heart" tattooed on her forehead. She faced a wide variety of perils and adventures.

That's it. That's all there is. Google turned up nothing more.

What can you do with that?

Summon your powers. Make that into a thing people would want to see more of.

    ----

Your task, as ever, is to re-invent that into something a 21st Century audience could look at without laughing. Or crying.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with, but bear in mind this is an ART thread. You don't get to just generate a piece of text. This is ART ONLY.

Let me make this clear: a couple of turns back, people were posting their text without even trying to produce art. People have been producing a tiny sketch that frankly would look poor when stuck to a fridge next to a two-year-old's doodlings, and sticking 300 words of text underneath it. Last time, I got bored of deleting these and just killed the thread.

If it happens again? The offending parties will have their accounts removed.

    You have one week. Go.

    This could get interesting.

The Woman With A Black Heart

Hard to say whether it is much of a remake, given how little there is to re-make, but the heart imagery was compelling to me.

Obscured glimpses of cultural signifiers of beauty.

    Woman with a black heart

In my head, mystical bleeds over into individual myth enabled by the malleability of human memory, and stories we build around things uncertain.

Maybe you only see it in the after image on your retina, and piece it into your memory later.
    Maybe it was never there.
    Maybe she was never there.

Like the wings... We'll have to do a rundown of variant Mystic Black Heart designs later in the thread.

    Indeed! I like our timing.
(And I like what you've created. 'Tis lovely.)

I like this one better than Ivan Brodsky... seems like something up Mike Allred's alley.

Can't help but think garters might've been too obvious, but I went for it anyway.

    black hearted woman

recycling old images because I'm taking a break from magazine layout. I tried to go with a burnt into her forehead look for the heart, rather than the traditional tattoo.

I liked the open ended nature of this one. it might get a few more photogs posting things.

I am listening to "a dark night in a city that knows how to keep its secret" theme as I draw this. Slow, jazzy theme with a lot of melancholy to it, and Vodka (?). She whispers, but what she said is lost to the cold .

My first go at one of these:

Woman With A Black Heart by Seej 500

If anyone feels a desperate urge to colour it up then by all means be my guest. Oh, and before anyone asks, this is based on a photo. The model's arm/hand really went like that...

EDIT: Had a spot more free time so I thought I'd throw together a couple of different colourways to see how they looked and to try out a couple of different shading techniques:

2 colourways of the original line drawing

So far, I can't decide between Magi and Seej 500 – I love the black eyes on the latter one.
