Joe Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5 and writer of "Changeling" wants you to resurrect a word.

So here's the deal. I'm calling on everybody in sight to help me
bring back a word. It's a conspiracy, see, and you're all part of it
if you choose to be.

I want to bring back the word "anon." As in, "I'll call you anon," or
"See you anon."

It isn't as specific as "see you tomorrow," when you may not, or "I'll
call you later" which is even more ill defined and inelegant..."anon"
means simply again..."I'll see you again" or "I'll call you in the
fullness of time."

A curious little experiment. What would you bring back? Or create from whole cloth?

@ Fauxhammer - Yes. I also like "Pipe down!" when telling someone to be quiet. I love talking like a '30's gangster.

@ SteadyUP - Yes. Bully for you. I also like talking like Teddy Roosevelt.

@ mybrainhurts - Motherfucker serves all purposes. I once did a sketch where a character complained about "his motherfucking mother." It was based on reality. Sad, really.

@ epalicki - It really bugs me to hear the degradation of the word "random". Also, "awesome", which I admit to overusing. Also, "dude". I once heard a stoner kid say "I'm a cowboy, dude!" and wanted very much to slap some sense into his fool head.

I also am in the attempt of correctly imitating the vernacular of the Nineteenth Century, where the masses, largely uneducated by our modern lofty standards, were possessed of an elegance unknown in the cocksucking pig-fuckers of today. I believe this is a project that will last me well into my crotchety-old-manhood.

@ Paul & Rickiep00h - Might a traveller join your grammar club? I am intolerant of fools and I own a parang.

"Disagreeable" would be my addition. No one describes people as 'disagreeable' anymore.

I always find it surprising to see people gripe about what they perceive to be "incorrect" usages. American English is not British English, get over it. Language evolves, get over it. If the words you're using are successfully communicating ideas, then you are correctly applying language. PERIOD. Variety and evolution are far more interesting to any true fan of language than would be a rigid adherence to a singular variety throughout time, which is so clearly impossible anyway, so clearly NOT HAPPENING NOW OR EVER, that it's silly to see people fight for it.

Like, for instance, I am completely in love with the idea that a word that has all but died out in common usage might, through the wonders of modern communication and technology, potentially be resurrected simply for shits and giggles.

See, language is weird and fun and alive. Stop trying to make it boring and dead.

 @doclivingston:

Evolution is great and I can appreciate David Milch turning "FUCK" into poetry as much as Oscar Wilde penning some biting phrase back at the dawn of the 20th century. Quality matters, content matters, character and ton matter. I know "guyz" from "da nort side" of "She-cah-go" who have an elegant short hand ("Over by dere" for any place distant) that's lively. At first glance it sounds very silly, exactly like something I would expect from the chans, and I’m not surprised to see others point out that this happens on the chans. But I’d be quite happy for more words to entire the common English lexicon. I am tired of having to converse with people whose regularly stuff three or all of the following into every sentence they utter: “like”, “you know”, “know what I mean” “the thing is”, and “basically”. I’m turning into one of those cranky fuckers who stops people mid-sentence to say “is it BASICALLY a house, or is it a HOUSE?”. So increasing people’s vocabulary can’t hurt, at least not in my opinion.

Even though I generally speak in a very direct manner, I always listen close when somebody starts rolling out the "basically"s, because that's when they're actually trying to say something they'd probably just as soon not tell you about.

Conversely, if I find for example that I've tripped up in a phone conversation with a client at my old yob, I'd start rolling out down-home as a motherfucker with some "I means" and shit. Straight up dumping them into my sentences. I'd try to picture myself walking together with the client, my arm around her shoulder, being as charismatic as possible. I hate it when people use "gay" or "retarded" as a pejorative term (I used to work with clients with developmental disabilities and/or mental illness).

I unfortunately have had a lengthy struggle killing "gay"-as-pejorative from my vocab, but a huge part of the problem is that gay relatives and gay friends of mine regularly use "gay" in the exact same way around me without hesitation and really don't give a crap when I follow suit. It's hard to remember that it's actually a usage people get bothered by.

Regarding "voila", the biggest thing I always see that pisses me off about that particular word is that nine times out of ten, I see it spelled "viola", as in the fucking instrument. People are dumb.

As to my earlier note about defending usages people might disagree with, I'm half a semester into studying the entire breadth of varieties of English across the world, and if you ever spend any time at all doing that sorta thing, you realize how ridiculous people sound when they go around declaring their particular manner of speech/vocab/grammar/pronunciation/spelling the emphatically "correct" way of going about things. You're pretty much guaranteed to be in the minority no matter what you're talking about, because the variation is just that prevalent.

For recent developments that might not last, as opposed to old words on their unfortunate last legs, I'd propose these:

Gazumping, as in waiting until a person has invested too much time and money into preparing for a purchase to pull out, then jacking up the price on a pretense.

Gerrymandering, as in defining the boundaries of an issue, specifically an election, such that the result is a foregone conclusion.

I think humanity needs a subtle, versatile and complete vocabulary to describe the many ways in which we can screw each other. Just like the old "Number of Inuit words for snow" thing, the more vocabulary we have to articulate the ways we all screw each other, the more accurately we will be able describe and understand it. Well me and my friends have been using "anon" for years so it doesn't seem that much of a conspiracy to me. Personally I'd like to see certain jargon phrases removed since they are either pointless baby talk or phrases many people use them without knowing what they mean at all, most recent of which have been the appalling "a big ask" and "sea change" which I heard most recently being used by some idiot woman on the news talking about how there had been a radical sea change in teaching over the last few months. Other phrases such as "get over it" or bizarre usage of words picked up from T.V. shows like some linguistic pox examples like "Hello???" or pointlessly adding "sooooo" to sentences also drive me up the wall though I don't mind them as much in conversational use as I do in written language.

@ mybrainhurts: You think? I suppose you're right, but I've been given the strangest looks when using them. I suppose I mean I wish they would grow into widely understood and used terms, rather than they might be in serious danger of dying. I'd hate to see them end up like, for instance, "anon" where most people kind of know they are real words, but they're not in everyday use. I want everyone to use the word gerrymandering all the time, because it sounds wonderful and can only be used to call bullshit on people.

Anytime someone uses the word gerrymandering, they sound great, give the english language a little boost, and are socking it to some corrupt asshole. It might very well be the perfect word.

But in the end it's a discussion about the basis of the word: Whether you're using it as the social norm uses it, or using it as the dictionary defines it.

And I really don't think anyone should "bring back words" collectively. I just wish more people understood more words. To say someone has to say anon instead of now, seems stupid to me. Language is wonderful and should be more diverse, not just interchanging.

@Whoever was talking about Voilá: Let's not forget people spelling it Wallah are using an incorrect word for it, as Wallah is arabic and means "By God."

I think the only real problem with the word retard, or retarded, is that it was used to indicate the mentally disabled in the first place. Granted it is true, but it was used in an insulting way. And people have become overly sensitive to it. Using it in everyday language, where it is appropriate, is not a problem. Even indicating that something is retarded, because you think it's stupid or bad, is a correct usage if the thing/event in question is not ... as good as it should be, not up to standard.

Gay, as slang, is obnoxious because it can only be one of two things; "that's so happy!" or "that's such a homosexual". Thus, it IS insulting to homosexual people, unless used to indicate something possitive, whereas "retard" or "retarded" does not have to be.

I do like anon. I actually use quite a few of the words and phrases mentioned here, but there is one phrase I wish people would use correctly. "I COULDN"T care less" rather than "I could care less"... enough said.
