Afternoon. I'm going to have to recommend Relentless over Red Bull... one gets more. More! = :D

Wow, what a great episode of FA. I really loved the last full page panel. Also I kinda noticed that there seemed to be even more detail than previous chapters. Maybe Paul is getting even better (like the details of the bootlaces in p2 panel 1). It makes sense I reckon; you do something for fifty episodes, you'll be better at 50 than at 1.

So, anyway, now I'm wondering - did Kait kill that guy, or did she find his body? From the composition of the art I reckon she's just come across his body.

I'm going to make myself a bacon sandwich now for brunch.

I love that panel looking up at Luke and the new villager, absolutely gorgeous.

Second half of introductions complete, KK and Sirkka doing actual work! Gotta feel for Miki, trying to keep any sort of competent collection of medical supplies in a broken world seems among the more impossible of their tasks. And now we have a murder? Hmm.

A good way to end the day, signs of life in their world at least, while winter keeps trying to impose itself here. Time to sleeeeeeeeep.

I agree about the perspective. It's deceptively difficult to get right, and almost transparent when it's perfect. Good work. The last page is excellent, revealing itself by scrolling down a browser window adds something to it. I reckon the TPB version will make the body much more prominent and assertive, just by dint of it being immediately visible.

@Greasemonkey: It's balmy where you are? Because it asks the question, if they aren't food, what are they? And then I allow as how Red Bull isn't really food but instead a mutagenic chemical that alters a person's genetic code to literally give them wings. @mayra

Wow! Tough comment critique. This scene, with the last image, can be called subtle in the wider sense that the comic has not resorted to dialogue or narration to tell us "medicine is short", but is actually forcing us to follow along with the visual information on the page and generally pay attention. It's an understated delivery of a significant plot point and, because it forces us to participate with the art to grasp the message, it makes more of an emotional impression on the reader. I believe this is generally what the user before you meant by "subtle and brilliant".

We're meant to see the murder as one of the ways in which the Freakangerls are threatening to exhaust their resources, in this case, the resource of social order. Now, if I were in a Warren Ellis story I would know better than to take comfort in any whimsical notion of "anticipated rate of attrition." I would fucking sacrifice a goat every time a shadow crossed over the sun. You just can't take status quo for granted.

edit added @ tag

OK, if they're so powerful, as has been pointed out several times, why is KK making herself work so hard just to cut through a metal drum? Surely cutting through sheet metal is within her telekinetic ability... I mean, they didn't hesitate to use their powers to shore up the freakcave after the mortar attack, so there doesn't seem to be a fundamental proscription against construction-oriented uses.

I've wondered about this several times. They don't seem to use their powers to support their various engineering projects nearly as much as it seems ought to be possible. (Breaking up pavement?) Why not?

It seems that for any given individual FreakAngel the actual power level varies. There seems to be a basic set of abilities that they all have, but it seems that some are better at certain things than others. Arkady can just blow shit up whenever she chooses, she's clearly the one who's explored the 'package' the most. Am I right in thinking that the only time we've seen someone other than Arkady do something destructive with their powers it's always been in tandem with at least one other Angel? Maybe the powerful stuff just needs more 'oomph' than one (sane) Angel can generate?

I love the Sirkka teaching panel. It's so non-gritty, making a lovely contrast with the healthy grittiness of the building and digging work, and the grim grittiness from the end of book two and the general condition of the world. Steamologist is a wonderful term. And I totally have a crush on Kait. Again. Still.

I wonder if KK always works alone. Caz has a crew of people she works with. I wonder if Karl is having to make an adjustment to working with a crew instead of just by himself on his rooftop, too.

I don't think you can find any example in Whitechapel of something that was built through the direct application of KK or anybody else's "powers," and they definitely could use new stuff, considering that everything they have is decayed and scavenged. So having to cut barrells must not be anything new.

Applying scientific rules to what the FA can do, i.e. if they can move some things around then they can move anything around, and then coming up short, doesn't mean anything. There's nothing in the book that told you these are science-based powers. To me, they seem to follow a more intuitive logic that better resembles magic. What the Freakangels can and cannot do falls more in the line of Defensive and Destructive, not Proactive or Constructive. They can use their genius to nurture growth slowly, but not enact it directly. They can apply their powers toward a limited set of ends, not necessarily in an ordered set of means. It seems they will have to sit and wait for age to come, before they can really get their powers to just create a better world around them at the snap of a finger. Such is the way that human talents work in general. Pretty basic, really. I hadn't even stopped to wonder about this stuff until today's comments.

@Brian - Interesting thought. I never interpreted KK's and Caz's engineering talent to be powers based before. Now that I think about it some more, the Freakangels package might help there to a certain degree, give them a bit more brain power at their disposal - but as with Miki's medicine, I took that most of it was learned from books (the hard way) and not entirely "magical" or intuitive. They're driven in that they have a responsibility for what happened, and that's what's pushing them forward. Wonder if either KK or Caz can look "inside" machines and visualize them the way Miki can peek inside people's bodies.

heh. Thanks for the rundown of characters. And of course, perfect run up to (re)meeting Kait. Folks are talking about murder and exactly how it was missed. Verry interesting. There's a lot of spatter so not likely a gun. There's no tracks leading away so a knife and/or hand to hand becomes unlikely, or at least harder. Shards of white light, the devastating FA attack could certainly be that case, despite the lack of exit wounds. Otherwise an uncommon weapon, though, again, used from range.

Luke is really setting up to be a bad guy. But I'm not sure murder is where he'd go. Maybe, if someone disrespected him enough and couldn't match his powers. But he does strike me as addicted to using his power as well as lording it over others. He is fairly megalomaniacal, which is the only way I can explain that crazed look on his face. He doesn't care to mend his ways and he doesn't care to keep hidden from the cohort who he knows will find him out.

I feel for Miki. Such an ache to give everything you've got and see the proof that it won't be enough.

whoa...what's going on with kait?? seems someone needed some killing, or she found that body needing alot less killing that it got..

hmm...this week has generally sucked....except i got some potentially great and awesome news.
before I got to the great and awesome, I spent most of my week sitting around in bed, reading The Picture of Dorian Gray which i hadn't gotten around to reading yet. We've hit a hideous cold spell here in KY and my arthritis has been a royal bitch.
dammit, I can't kill Wesker if my hands hurt this bad! (res evil 5 is lots of fun two player).
well, i'll wait it out...warm weather is on it's way and I won't feel nearly as bad when that happens...
as for the good news...
me and my hubs had a good friend who is considering going into business with us. He's a martial arts teacher who happens to have enough cash to start up a new business. We're thinking White Crow Comics and Kung Fu! We're going to buy a building with enough floor space to set up for both, the martial arts would be taught at night and the shop run during the day. Also if there is room, I'll be continuing my hippywear/pagan supplies section...so it might be White Crow Comics, Curiousities, and Kungfu.
We had expected to be out of the business for another three or four years, but with this recent development, we might have our shop ready to open within a year or two. I really hope this works out...I'm pretty excited.
