2007 was a great music year, but unordinarily bleak for film.
No Country for Old Men is pretty great, and I hear good things about There Will Be Blood... but someone asked me to give them a quick top ten and I couldn't name 10 good movies from 2007.
If anyone can throw in a quick (or premeditated) top ten of '07 I'd be thrilled.
That said 2008 will be great, right??? Dark Knight, Iron Man and Punisher 2??? They'll be good right???

I can stretch for maybe 4 movies that were definitely great, but nothing past that.
I thought Stardust was awful, however. -
I never found the time to go see Across the Universe, but I was intrigued by the trailer. Anyone go to see it and can vouch for it?

Across The Universe might be good if you get really high beforehand... I know a lot of idiots that like it... I thought it was like paying money to spend two hours getting punched in the face.

As much as people decry the state of the movie business not a year goes by that I don't see quite a few things that I like. But what do I know, I loved the Turtles movie... -
I'm having a time out until I can learn some manners."Find me Guilty" was a (I kid you not) a great film with Vin Diesel based on a true story.

Y'know, I might get crap for it, but I really have to say I think 2007 might be the best year of movies I've ever actually partook in. Seriously, like, my list of the ten best films I saw this year was very, very good and even the more "Action thriller" films were either smarter or more tongue-in-cheek this year than before making them quite enjoyable and the comedies are starting to get more vicious too. But, I mean, look at all this: No Country For Old Men, Gone Baby Gone, Eastern Promises, Juno, 3:10 to Yuma, Rescue Dawn, Atonement, Once (yeah yeah, it was made in '06 but we didn't get it stateside until '07 so ha!), There Will Be Blood (though I won't have seen it until this coming Thurs), Sweeney Todd, Charlie Wilson's War, Michael Clayton, Zodiac, Lars and the Real Girl, The Assassination of Jesse James... I mean, that's just a lot of good film there.
And even the more "Entertainment over substance" films were pretty great at being that: Live Free and Die Hard, Knocked Up, Superbad, 300, The Simpsons, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Lookout, American Gangster, Harry Potter, Beowulf... That's a lot of good popcorning right there.
Hell, I still need to see Before the Devil Knows You're Dead and Into the Wild still. Those were some pretty highly praised films that went under the radar in '07 as well... -
Sorry, I didn't mean to come off like "I hate everything", I just wondered what the great movies were last year, since I haven't seen them. I guess you're right though, that is a fair haul of movies, I wondered if they are good.
I'm going to assume the following movies are good and I therefore should watch them: Gone Baby Gone, Eastern Promises, 3:10 to Yuma, Rescue Dawn, Atonement, Once, There Will Be Blood, Michael Clayton, Jesse James, Knocked Up, The Lookout and Before The Devil Knows You're Dead (Obviously Sidney Lumet+Phillip Seymour Hoffman= Brilliant).
That's well over ten good movies from 2007 I haven't seen...
So far, my favorites are
1. No Country For Old Men
2. Charlie Wilson's War
3. Live Free Or Die Hard
4. Margot At The Wedding
5. Simpsons Movie
6. Superbad
Clearly the problem is not the movies, but the fact I haven't seen ten good ones; There they are; thanks for responding to my inquiry. Those are the 6 good ones I've seen so far; it just seemed everytime I went to the theater I got kicked in the gut and charged for it. ie: Juno, Across The Universe, Zodiac, American Gangster, Lars And The Real Girl... yadda yadda yadda
But again, the problem no doubt lies with me, yadda yadda eye of the beholder, yadda, No truth only perspective yadda.
Hopefully at least 4 of those other ones are good. -
Macgyver, by "Turtles" are you talking about Turtles can Fly or Chances of the World Changing? Or alternatively, perhaps you're talking about some other movie...

Heh, I didn't mean to sound like I was calling you out, I just meant I might take crap in general. I dout when anyone thinks "great years in movies" that 2007 will even register, but man, I saw more "Oscar level films" in my top ten this year than I have from any of the actual Oscar nominated films from at least the three years before it. But yeah, check any of those movies I mentioned, I'd highly recommend any of them and think they'd get a fair share of support. -

That was 2005 or 06.
Best movie of 07 was No Country, without a doubt. I really liked Before the Devil Knows You're Dead as well. It was really interesting to see Lumet using the weird intercutting jump-cut editing device from The Pawnbroker. I don't think he's used it since then and that was about 40 years ago.
Theres quite a few other things I'm excited about, but they've all been mentioned already, so I won't bother. -
Yeah it was the TMNT "abomination". I just thought it was fun (and pretty)....
ANYWAY, last year worked out as an almost 50/50 down the line for me cinema wise, slightly skewed to the good side. However, I didn't really catch any "proper" movies (Well, not any of the 2007 batch. I don't JUST watch crap) which I'll be catching up with in the next month or so, so time will tell.
I just looked at the list of films I caught in the theatre last year and it is all popcorn nonsense really. Bit worrying that... -

I didn't spend much time in the cinema last year, or even watching DVDs, but CONTROL was the best film of 2007 for me, by a considerable margin.

@ HumphreyLee: I totally agree with you. I thought 2007 was a wonderful year for movies. I would definatly add Orphanoto, El to the list. I also thought I Am Legend was paticularly well done.
I'm sure I'll think of a couple of others later on, lol. -
