ahh, thanks, mister CEO. i did, eventually, get around to reading your mission statement et al. :) quick question: what's the file size limit, and why 8 tracks minimum? will it ever be possible to publish a mix consisting of two tracks over 15 minutes each in length?
That's me swinging a drumstick around at the very last Ergs! show. Easily one of the top five nights of my life. That photo was taken during their final song, a performance of 'Upstairs/Downstairs' that lasted roughly a half an hour.
@everybody
These are fantastic. I'm driving a little over three hundred miles on Thursday evening, and I'll be using this thread as reference for finding drive music.
David Porter from 8tracks here. Thx for all the great mixes guys. (And Warren thx for the props - we pre-dated Muxtape but do appreciate the comparison)
My Fuzzy Uzzy Mixie Wixie, because I have no creativity for titles and gave no thought to the thematics before I started making the mix. Worst internet boyfriend ever!
Track list:
Zebra Stripes - Intro '66 The Rezillos - Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight The Detroit Cobras - Mean Man The Cramps - Goo Goo Muck Georges Garvarentz - Les temp des loups Lou Reed - This Magic Moment The Mooney Suzuki - A Little Bit of Love The Guess Who - Shakin' All Over Holly and the Italians - Rock Against Romance
I figured I'd be able to move these tracks around after I'd uploaded them, so this is what the order ended up being, as I was unable to do that (there may be a method, just one that I don't know). I guess it plays back in random order on subsequent plays, however, so maybe it doesn't matter all that much what order the songs are in.
Christ, this is going to be my new life plan, isn't it? Making mixes for strangers. Well, here's another one: Heavy Metal Warlords, which is a pretty stupid name that I want to change but it sums up the contents of the mix pretty well, so whatevs, dude...
1. Daiquiri- My Idea Of Fun Noisy electro-punk from Canada, though not nearly as awful as it sounds written down.
2. Rob Kleiner- Mannequins & Mandolins The beloved keyboardist from Tub Ring from his solo pop record.
3. P.O.S.- I Play The Matador (Redo) The ringleader of Minneapolis alt-hip-hop crew Doomtree. Also a member of the punk rock band Building Better Bombs.
4. Rotator- Get So Exxxcited French breakcore artist. Asked a goth girl at a local crepe restaurant what she was listening to, ended up getting an invite to what.cd just so I could get this guy's stuff.
5. Curve- Chinese Burn Kind of an industrial pop thing. The only Curve song I'm really crazy about, but I think it's quite good.
6. Grand Buffet- Dark Autumn Can't tell if these guys are taking themselves seriously or not. Whatever the case may be, it works.
7. The Alter Boys- Famine Ghost An alt-metal group featuring members of quirk rock group Dog Fashion Disco, and the horrible Nu-metal band Mushroomhead. I don't think I'm really selling this one with the descriptions.
8. 13&God- Sure As Dept. Dust Collectors The track I wanted to put on my last mix. Not available as a studio track, or for sale in any form, which is a damn shame.
@Jeff Zero Yeah, way off base on Alter Boys. At least you didn't mention that some douche from Jackass was involved (barely)... damn it! I don't think "alt-metal" is the right term. Don't know if there is a right term. I always think "DFD at a beach barbecue" but that really applies to probably one song on the album. Problem w/ listening to this kind of music. Hard to describe.
Gah, I'm working on a mixtape, I swear! Will return w/ one soon.
@allana Of course, pleased to see the reception over here!
So the file size limit is 20MB at the moment although we're going to allow upload of continuous MP3 mixes this summer, as part of a premium (yeah, paid) DJ offering. In the meantime, let me know if you're hitting yr head and we can look into adjusting.
The 8-track minimum is somewhat arbitrary - for the "average" song length (4 min) this then works out to ~30 minutes. If we allowed a 1-track mix (say), then the access by a listener is basically on-demand, and this requires direct (and prohibitively expensive) licensing. Likewise, we have to limit skips to 6/hour and randomize the mix on the 2nd listen by a listener (both of which aren't ideal, I know) to ensure we meet the letter and spirit of the compulsory webcasting license (this is same set of rules as Pandora, fwiw).
Kill the Rock- Mindless Self Indulgence Cheers!- Slam Dunk Contest My Fair Lady- David Byrne Pandora's Box- Allofher Twitch (My boyfriend's project) Get Help (NOW!)- Tub Ring Bring Me the Head of Andy Warhol- Polkadot Cadaver Neuworld- Skinny Puppy Two Chords- Damn Water Fountain (I don't know where the hell this came from.)
The Starlight Mints - Submarine #3 The Halo Benders - Don't Touch My Bikini Pixies - Wild Honey Pie Add N To (X) - Metal Fingers In My Body Pete And The Pirates - Come On Feet The Delgados - Under Canvas Under Wraps Jim Noir - Don't You Worry Urusei Yatsura - Slain By Elf Metal Molly - Orange Evil Superstars - It's A Sad Sad Planet Guided By Voices - My Son Cool
The Gerbils - Sunshine Soul The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Lovin' Machine Sonic Youth - Today Yr. Love, Tomorrow the World The Orphins - The Car Song The Fall - Mr. Pharmacist Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - My Pal The Tortoise McLusky - Day of the Deadringers Tullycraft - Pop Songs Your New Boyfriend's Too Stupid To Know About dEUS - Morticiachair Hot Lava - JPG in the Sun Whale - Four Big Speakers
