My friend the beautiful and enormously talented Xenia Pestova is turning 30 this year and has put out a call for 30 second compositions to celebrate the event.
I know there are a lot of musicians here, so I thought I'd mention it is as some of you might find it fun. She'll play as many solo pieces as she can on June 15th and will play any duo compositions as soon as she can arrange collaborators. I think it is a lovely and charming idea, so please go check out the details (and feel free to let her know I sent you). Details here.
Yay! I hope you manage it. Weren't you submitting to some conference or something in Montreal? Or did I dream that up? If I didn't dream it up, what came of it?
You did not dream it up - I sent my string quartet to the Quator Bozzini's workshop. Hilariously, they turned me down and accepted my teacher (who did not tell me she was applying) instead. C'est la vie.
Awww.... bum. That's sucky. Well there are lots of music tech things happening around here; you should apply for something else. I should pay more attention and let you know when there are things relevant to you. What are you doing this summer? Is it extremely weird for us to be having this conversation on whitechapel? Yes. Yes it is. My end of term death march will be over as of the 16th. If you email me and tell me all your secrets I'll get back to you right around then. It is entirely possible that I will be drunk at the time.
Coincidentally, I've just started learning (or trying to learn) Pure Data, so this looks like a great first project. No idea how quickly I can knock out an entirely new composition with unfamiliar software, but I'll do my level best.
EvJ - Yay! I'm glad to hear it. Also: One of my labmates created a virtual environment for haptics and graphics and music (or other things) that can be used via PD. I will start blogging about music tech things later this month, and that will be one of my first few posts. I'll be sure to mention it on whitechapel when I get it going, and if you've learned a little PD by then it might be a fun thing to try out.
I'm heavily snowed under with work at the moment. (Finished mastering half an hour ago! Now I have whisky, and a smile on my face.) I too now have to start with blogging, and get artwork finished, and work on a portfolio that's due in about two weeks. A pd 30 second piano composition for an interesting brief concept is portfolio-tastic though, so it's worth the effort. If I manage to finish it to a decent standard, it will be a lovely extra string for my application bow.
Ollie On the Open Call page she just links to her contact page. So I guess drop her a note there and ask where to send it. I don't want to publish her email address online if she hasn't since I'm sure she has her reasons.
Willow I'm not familiar with them, though if they want to compose something I'm sure it is welcome.
