This should scare all those living in the U.S. and at least disturb those abroad!
"I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God. And that's what we need to do is amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than trying to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view of how we treat each other and how we treat the family." -- Mike Huckabee
See, thats one thing I've never understood about the Faith. They really believe it's completely impossible to be a good person without Jesus sleeping next to you at night. Just sleeping mind, no funny business.
So would it really be changed to 'God's' standards or would it be changed to 'his organized religion's views on God's standards'. Thats what would keep me awake at night.
Good point Mark R! Even if they just want to substitute the bible for the constitution it will still be a "mortal man's" interpretation of that bible that rules the country.
Of course Huckabee's point is that he is no ordinary mortal man ; )
Don't like Mike Huckabee scare you, every comment like that should only serve to remind you that he has virtually no chance of getting elected. Even Bush 43 wasn't dumbheaded enough to make comments like that before he was in office. There's still about a full third of the Republican party left made up of right wing ideologists who want nothing to do with the Religious Right, a heady mix of libertarians, armed survivalists and rampant capitalists. Which makes watching an actual political contest on their side of the aisle incredibly fun, and more or less insures a Democratic President.
In trying to find quotes from The Sitting President that could top Huckabee's, I killed my own argument. Apparently Bush made the remark 'There ought to be limits to freedom' while running for office.
So you can ignore my logic and go back to being afraid.
So would it really be changed to 'God's' standards or would it be changed to 'his organized religion's views on God's standards'. Thats what would keep me awake at night.
Isn't that basically "Love me and believe in me without reason or your ass will be beaten with a paddle for the rest of eternity" ?
pKone - Not only would it be a 'mortal man's' version of the bible, but it would have to be some specifically chosen carefully translated version of said book. and we here in the american speaking part of the world don't take kindly to the idea that speakers of another language are as valid as we are and that the culture from whence that language came is anything to be seen as valid either. So, basically, it would be HuckabeeJesusGod's Bible/Constitution.
I think what weirds me out about that quote is that I only heard it from alt-outlets : blogs, friends, etc. Didn't seem to hit the news, or hell, even the Daily Show.
He might not win anything, but maybe he's making the "discourse" (as it is) open to that sort of god-fuck-crazyness, that would have been called out in other times. Maybe.
from what I hear his campaign is also pretty strapped for cash, so he'll run out of ability to campaign via capital before he even gets a chance to lose hands down for president.
True, Huckabee is ridiculous, there can be no denying, but even he is better than Romney who once mistook a book he read for an actual French governmental policy. I'm fairly forgiving of mistakes, but I'm not comfortable with anyone running for high public office who is unable to tell the difference between fiction and reality.
Come to think of it, I'm not sure Huckabee has a solid grasp of reality either. Also, he's got the bugged-out, hard-plastic eyes of a muppet.
