It's Friday, and we're back with a most fowl episode.

... I'm so sorry. That sort of awful punning will happen when I'm up from 2am. Nothing to be done about it but more Red Bull until the fugue passes.

G'morning, Whitechapel. I am currently waiting for the new GI Joe episode to go live, catching up on listening to the week's new releases, and having a browse through the 4am Project site that Dan just linked me via twitter (they picked a lovely and familiar time of day). How's everyone here?

Oh, I LIKED this episode :) Mind you, none of the dialogue seems congruent with most of what's come before. Its like the sheer Britishness of them all got turned all the way up to 11... Still, most enjoyable!

And Paul captured the facial expressions for each line perfectly. Masterful. Well done, sir, well done!

I do love KK's look this week. I've always had a soft spot for girls in "work" mode. "Fuck you, I'm too busy to look good," and all that. Her last line was great, also.

And really, why wouldn't 'Kady be overjoyed with chikkinz?

As for the GI Joe, I haven't decided whether I'm going to catch the episodes or what. I'll probably catch up tomorrow while the wife is at work. I will say, though, that it looks might sexy.

Yesterday was a fucking beautiful day in NE Indiana, and today looks to improve upon it. Outside for adventures!

Salter's Duck! It got a mention on BBC's "Three Men in Another Boat" I think. KK pretty much summed up its fate, though last year's energy crisis made it worth a second look.

this was one of the more 'a day in the life' episodes we have had in a while and i loved it. reminds me of conversations i've had with friends in the past. no, not who shagged who, but is the egg a fruit or vegetable. (ROFL, god, conversations like that crack me all to hell.)

i agree, paul; damn fine job, watching your talent EXPLODE through out the FA cycle has been a true pleasure.

warren, as always, your ability to educate and entertain within this medium is beyond measure. (the salter's duck) i'll just be damn.

ariana, you sound better and that of course translates into a safer WhiteChapel, and for that, thank you.

The dialogue between the characters is so eff-ing real, it gets me excited. Not in the "my friends talk just like this way" or anything, because that's crap. No one I know talks like post-apocalyptic survivor psychics carrying boxes of chickens. It's just believable how they play off each other.

God, I love this series.

What a most pleasant way to awaken this morning. Granted I was looking forward to more CSI with Kait, but there's no way I can complain about such a lovely, world enriching episode. It's episodes like this that mke me love FreakAngels, the fact that this format allows the kind of depth and exploration that you can't get with monthly releases of comic issues. If I could read all my favorite comics this way, I would, and I'd still go out and buy the graphic novels! Warren is brilliant. And Paul's art is a wonderful treat for my eyes...

... which are all bloodshot with pinkeye. Bleh. I have been sick for a week, then I got pinkeye to top it off. My voice is all but gone and I can't hear well out of my left ear, I feel like a frickin' zombie. At least I have FreakAngels, and WhiteChapel (where I can't help but be happy, since people like lordmitz do things to make me laugh so hard).

Oui, the tone of this episode is deadly (as they say in Green Eirinn) If one day someone starts a thread about our favourite FA quotes, I guess quite a few'd be extracted from that one. Just one: "I don't think eggs are a fruit" Another one: "She's training more slaves to wank in front of her and I spent the week out on the river hunting chickens." And another one: "Wait for them to poo out eggs"
I then realize I could quote many more of them (but I won't of course) Brilliant. Bien entendu.

Good times. And lovely images. Just walking pleasantly along with chickens and fencing wire...so simple and so detailed. Really gorgeous work, Paul!

Thanks again for just a few more background details. I do feel rather like a bird going through these episodes looking for itty bitty grains of history. They grew up together, went to school together, but had their own families with family dramas. Then...the government found them? Ok. They weren't exactly created. At least, not created and then guided and kept as lab rats from day one. Interesting. I wonder when the package kicked in. Sounds like after they discovered shagging.

If they lived before the flood? How can they not know what a chicken egg is? Or what a chicken is for that fact of the matter? I'm sure before the flood they had chickens, right?
Other then those questions that flood through my mind, I love this episode.

This episode rekindled my love for Freakangels. The dialogue about whether an egg is a fruit or vegetable is simply brilliant. I laughed out loud, numerous times.

There was such a nice contrast between this episode and the one before it. Lingering right at the back of my mind is the thought that there's a vicious killer on the loose, but it's hard to focus on that when you're spitting all over your monitor in glee.

This week, I've been writing an essay about the ambiguous nature of sin as represented in John Webster's The White Devil. I have been also working on a short story for an uncoming anthology :D The story is called 'The Serpentine Sea' and is about a woman who turns up off the shore in Frinton with total amnesia and an inability to talk. Ooo, you'll never guess what happens next :D

Hope everyone is red-bulling it up. Did I say that? Yes, I did.

I think it's a combination of not having seen an egg in years, not really caring to begin with, and KK having fun with them.

Not to mention that some people now call them "cackle fruit" as a colloquialism. I'm pretty sure the whole thing is a joke, and most definitely Not To Be Taken Seriously.

Personally, I'm having a giggle over the fact that no one would be able to hear 'Kady say a completely asinine spelling of the word "chickens". Oh yes, all giggly.

I LOVE the look on Conners face in the second panel on the first page! that is EXACTLY the look I get on my face when I smell a chicken.

I really like the casual feel to this wweks comic. They arent fighting bad guys or rescuing people... just being in thier element and its kinda peaceful.

Arkady wins the week as my favorite Freakangel with her "Chikkinz" shout. KK comes a close second, though, with her mini-history of the duck that created electricity. Gad, are there any mechanically-inclined or green jobs-promoting Whitechapelers who could use this bit of forgotten technology to help wean their communities off the for-profit power companies?

How'd my week go? It was a mix of both good stuff and minor frustrations. I've got several self-imposed article deadlines coming at me like fucking freight trains. Paid work involved doing repeated dinner theatre versions of "Waiting For Godot" as I waited for a necessary bit of software to produce necessary documents. On the other hand, a young accordionist busking in my subway terminal made me stop my homeward bound rush to hear her sing a song she had written. Her words were partly drowned out by the noise of the trains, but I nodded my head along with every squeeze of her instrument.

As for them not knowing what a chicken is, you'd be surprised how few kids these days know anything about where their food comes from. They might know what a roast chicken looks like, but there's a disconnect between that and the actual animal.

And yes, this does make me despair for the future.

@manikmoon: You'd be surprised; chikkinz can be surprisingly mellow. (That or the "Freakangels Package" includes a calming effect on poultry...)

@Miranda's Eyes: There are a number of outfits working on wave-generated electricity. Two of them have been testing off the central Oregon coast, where I live and work; one of those two is my employer, Oregon State University. I've had a minor role in the two ops tests OSU's conducted thus far (my part being getting the generating buoy in the water and/or rigged for towing to sea); the first would best be described as FAIL, the second (a year later, with some major redesign to the buoy) was apparently a solid success. (The other outfit, a non-profit energy company, seemed to be doing well with their test - until it sank due to operator error, creating a navigation hazard and seriously pissing off the local fishermen.)

They're not using the "duck", though; the buoys are a fairly straightforward generator, with an anchored core as the stator surrounded by a free-floating cylinder or toroid acting as the rotor. Not as efficient as the duck in converting kinetic energy to electrical, but far more robust. From my admittedly limited knowledge of the details, the big practical drawback to the duck is its relatively high number of moving parts.

BTW, how big of a proverbial spanner does the growing problem of ocean acidification throw into the machinery used to harness wave-generated electricity? I can't imagine continual exposure to water with a pH of 4 would be good in the long run for machine parts.

An ocean acidity of 4 would be a catastrophic level indeed - the average pH of the world's oceans is 8.1, and that's generally believed to be a 0.1 unit drop over the last 250 years, which is what's raised the red flag over ocean acidification.

But even normal, neutral-to-alkaline seawater does no good to mechanical parts. Pretty much anything that can corrode or deteriorate in salt water (and salt air) has to be inside a watertight shell.

I'm used to chickens that run around making it quite difficult to gather them up, and just when you get them and think you're ok, suddenly they're all escaping and running about like chickens. I lived in the country as a child though and had some contact with chickens--most people didn't and didn't--I don't judge the quality of the world on their experience of the country life. That said, YAY!!! Reading Freak Angels makes me feel rather cleverer than the average bear (gratuitous other comic reference), and I do judge people on things like that, so you guys are all ok, but some of the people I work with are exactly (yes, exactly), not.
