warren ellis, I love you.

some background:

I literally grewup on G.I. Joe. When I was a little kid, I hoped that it would still be around when I was an adult so that I could spend all of my own money (once I started making it) to buy as many G.I. Joes as I wanted (instead of begging parents). With the movie coming out, I had mixed feelings, just like with Transformers. This, however, is something else entirely. You've completed the circle between my childhood and adulthood. When do they pick this up for an entire season, and how much do they pay you to write it?

Anyway, thanks Warren. Your talent is much appreciated. Doktor Sleepless, Freakangels, and now this. It may sound corny, but you are an inspiration.

When episode two ended without the bad ninja suddenly hitting the good ninja on the head and rendering him unconscious, I felt oddly confused. I mean, you're British. I'm way old. When I was a kid, G.I. Joe was a flat-out war toy. Big man-dolls with big jeeps and such. Me, I marched in anti-war protests with me pops when I was like, six. The only thing in the G.I. Joe line I was remotely desirous of was a wonderful Mercury capsule.

The Claster Productions G.I. Joe cartoons and the smaller special ops Joe action figures came out . . . man, I must have been in college. Just not my thing.

But I like Resolute. Intense, but not a non-stop shower of blammo and spatter like (say) Clone Wars.

P.S.Trivia: Before G.I. Joe, Claster Productions was best known for the franchised Romper Room show.

 @Eddie Current:

Not that Ellis' style is defined only by grisly deaths, but...have you watched Anderson's shows?

Thunderbirds - Not quite as bloodthirsty as later series, but in the very first episode Our Hero (Scott Tracy) does his best to kill somebody for taking pictures of his aircraft. Now, true, the photographer is actually master criminal The Hood, but Tracy doesn't know this; for all he knows the guy is the editor, photographer and sole proprietor of the East Goatdung Weekly Shopper and Hallelujah, with two kids and an asthmatic budgie, and he still strafes him off the road into a smoking crash (tm Century 21).

Captain Scarlet - Now we're getting down to it. An interplanetary war started by one Earthman with a panicky trigger finger. Multiple violent deaths almost every episode, not excluding the hero (who, of course, gets better.) Ron Embleton's paintings for the end title cards are absolutely gorgeous - and every one of them depicts Scarlet about to die horribly (dynamited, run over by a tank, drowned AND eaten by sharks, etc) and we know he's not going to get out of it, he's just going to come back to life after suffering every minute of pain.

Joe 90 - Fewer corpses, but most of them created by an eight-year-old boy with brain implants and live ammunition. Need I say more?

And actually, Captain Scarlet already WAS remade a few years back, in a CGI version which ran two seasons but which apparently almost no one saw - and took a more "mature" approach in that the stories had a lot more plot and characterization to go along with the Really Cool Tech And Explosions. It's pretty impressive, and very much in the same vein as we're seeing now with Resolute.

Which is damn good, by the way. My liking for the original GI Joe didn't last terribly long (with one or two exceptions), but this I'm enjoying.

Fucking right on. GI Joe was the very first ...world, I guess... where I learned to take things over and tell my own story. In the first grade we would take different roles and run around the playground pretending to be those guys and defending ourselves against Cobra attacks and vice versa. Taught me to look for strong women characters, since it seemed to have one for every fifteen male characters. And the bad guys were frequently much cooler than the good guys.

Thanks for the folks digging up the YouTube also. My middle brother is in Afghanistan so he can't see AdultSwim.com, and I don't know if he can access YT but we can maybe work something out. THANKS!

Good to see love for Captain Scarlet. Shame the guy who wrote most of that series (and did a terrific job on it) then wrote the worst ever episode of Torchwood (alien insemination + shapeshifter + wedding = non-hilarity). Yes, the worst episode of the worst series on TV. Depressing stuff.

Captain Scarlet was aces, though. The original was great too, though. Every so often Spectrum would fail dismally. Even as a kid I thought that was clever writing, because that, of course, meant you never really knew if the Mysterons would be thwarted every week.

I'm sure Warren has already discussed this elsewhere, so please forgive me for asking, but is there just going to be one series of GI Joe, or has he been asked to do more? Because for the first time in my life, I want to overdose on GI Joe cartoons.

@Don Hilliard, whose last name I dig:

It's more a matter of the staging. I read an interview (and I think I book marked it, I'll edit this to add later so we can check my recall) with Mr. Anderson where he noted the south park team wanted him as a consultant on Team America, and other commitments prevented it. He saw the film, and felt the way the violence and sex was handled wasn't appropriate.

Now as you cited, Gary's not beyond such-- it's more a matter of how it's handled. And re-watching the CGI Scarlet right now-- yeah, the gulf between what Warren's doing with Resolute and that was a little bigger in my head. You are quite correct.

Which means now I REALLY want to see Warren tackle Scarlet or International Rescue.

For now, he's made GI Joe awesome. And I always found GI Joe and Transformers-- the afternoon time waster of choice at age 5-- to be fun, but never took either seriously. This makes it fun for me now, and not in the "omg I watched this as a kid did I not realize how silly it was let's mock it now" way.

@Eddie Current: I don't doubt for a second that Gerry Anderson wasn't best pleased with Team America. And I also don't doubt that he'd be willing to work with a more mature writer - provided that the writer isn't so concerned with being postmodern that they turn the whole thing into a pisstake.

I confess I was being mildly ironic about Thunderbirds and Joe 90; I think the darker angles on those were truly unintentional on Anderson's part. Not so much Captain Scarlet (or the later live-action shows, or even Terrahawks - which isn't quite as much a kiddie show as it first appears.)

As I said, I wasn't a huge fan of the original GI Joe cartoon (which I didn't see until its release on video a year or so after it aired, so I would have been about 13)...but I wouldn't have bothered watching Resolute if I didn't have some affection for it, and I wouldn't be at all impressed if it was simply shredding the original. I am, and it's not.

So I think we're on the same page. Roll on Episode 4!

I'm not sure the voice acting does the dialogue justice, to be honest. But that's my general feeling about most cartoons. I only dimly recall GI Joe in the 80s, since I was never a fan as a kid. I do remember being somewhat turned off by Scarlett (was her last name O'Hara?) who was the only female character of note. I was pleased to see Warren's take on the series start off with her. Granted, it's been 20 odd years since I saw a GI Joe cartoon, but hey -- here Scarlett has a personality and isn't just the token female of the group.

I agree with Jess, I don't think the voice acting (with the exception of Cobra Commander being well and truly villainous, as opposed to the bumbling idiot of the original series) does the writing justice. Which is probably why I liked the second episode the best... after the talking ended. Just a ton of well-timed Ellis Action. I thought the lines themselves were great, the voice overs just seemed to be under-produced.

I'll also second the "Where is his grenade belt?" as a fucking great sequence. Curiosity killed the Cobra.

I realise it's bad form to look too closesly at what happens in a G.I. Joe cartoon, and I like a good catastrophe to get things rolling (it's certainly a change from all those A-Team guns firing and no one ever dying) -- and, never having seen an entire episode of the show prior to this, as far as I know there's some weird kind of duellist chivalry at play here, or Cobra Commander is nursing an unrequited crush on head Joe guy there. But if I'm the new and improved completely homicidal Cobra, and I know enough about where G.I. Joe hang out to be able to sneak in and kill their security expert, I think I might vapourise them before I vapourised Moscow, seeing as they're always fucking up my plans. The name of the series would have to be changed to Cobra after that.

 yes, yes, yes!

Still loving it! Esp. the ninja shit. Great background on the Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow rivalry. Warren, how much of that was dictated by the license holders and how much was artistic liberty? I guess the same question could apply to the whole series. Did they just say: "Here's G.I. Joe. Run with it," or were there parameters in which you had to write?

I'm in wholehearted agreement with everyone who is reliving their childhood in a more grown-up, badass, and lethal incarnation here. At the end, Zartan materializes on the catwalk, and I breath out a suspenseful "Zartan" just before Duke does. You know... I remember searching like mad for that action figure when I was a kid. It featured cutting-edge, color change technology!!! OMG! Must Have!
I'm really pleased with how recognizable all of the Joes are. And now, Dialtone! A 21st Century Joe, indeed.

Anyway... thanks again, Warren. Yeah I'm pretty sure they had 'chutes on their backs. It wouldn't make sense to go back down by balloon all the way, though I think the light air would let them get plenty fast enough to burn up if they jumped from where they were, so those two what fell are fucked. God damn that whole sequence was such a pure thrill to watch, jumping around on wires at the edge of gravity. The only thing missing was a cameo by Philippe Petit.

Sword punching! Dude you had me at stratellite. But that Snake Eyes vs Stormshadow fight was epic and a thing of beauty. It was effing perfect that is how it should have been years ago between them, you made my brother and I very happy middle aged men! My brother inherited our shared pile of close to 100 Joes/Cobras and 20 odd vehicles, he still has Action Force figures including that blonde Scarlett repaint with the funky gatling motorcycle that we picked up ion a trip to London in '84, and I don't think my nephew even knows those toys exist.

I'd ask for a regular series but that will never happen, so I'll just say thanks.

 Specifically about installment 8:

On the one hand *spoiler* I saw the "seventh technique" thing coming. I mean, it started with a "you killed my master" note and ended with the same classic storyline. While that in and of itself didn't hit me as hard as it might have, the whole scene was gorgeous. The subtleties like the shockwave and the birds were just beautiful. It was only about a few hours later that I sat back and thought to myself "Holy crap! Twenty years of foreplay and we just saw the head Cobra Ninja get his skull scrambled." The weight of what that must be for dedicated fans (I'm only a semi-versed fan) must be huge.

I was curious about the lack of blood: decision from people who are expecting kids to see this or are they just too damn ninja to bleed?*/spoilers*

On the whole, Resolute is turning out to be just bloody awesome. I'm watching this after finally reading Crooked Little Vein and I'm impressed with something from both works: How good a grasp Warren has on American stereotypes, how to manipulate them and when to break them for good effect.

God I hope they let you do more of this. And for that matter... do He-Man next?

@liamshiels: that one stood out to me as well.

a more likely scenario: movie's mediocre; fanboys rave about resolute; hollywood discovers ellis's mass-badass-appeal; freakangels, doktor sleepless, and transmetropolitan all take off as lucrative movie franchises in their own right, under the careful guidance of warren himself, with an arsenal of hair trigger bowel disruptors trained on any meddling studio execs trying to make the material "more marketable"

hell... at the very least, maybe they'll let him write the next x-script. collab with joss whedon too much to hope for? it could rip a whole in the very fabric of fandom!!! mass-nerdgasms cause the interwebs to implode! we all die happy.

@bjacques: can't lead in to the movie. movie's a reboot. destro isn't sporting the chrome head at the start.

which brings up another example of glaring ignorance from the youtube comment peanut gallery. the comments seem split between: "YES! All I used them for was to force genital-less rape on my sister's Barbies and then sacrifice her to the sun gods of New Mexico.

1) It's good to see soldiers kill. A GI Joe that doesn't kill is just another way of removing his cock.

2) The last words on ep 10 sealed the deal for me. About fucking time.

Thanks for another fun story.

Conversely, Scarlett can pick em off while duel weilding handguns while being flung through the air upside down by an explosion of aforementioned fuel tanks.

But then, she's had ninja training, hasn't she.

I wonder if Scarlett's related to Anna Mercury.

I agree that the production value all around on this has been surprisingly high. I was never a GI Joe fan, but this is just plain entertaining. Two things that stood out to me: I enjoy the fact that Joe vs. Cobra weapons fire is still color-coded, and when I read what strikes me as an Ellisian line like 'my cunning plan,' I never imagined it coming from someone with a NY accent. None of this detracts from my enjoyment of the series tho'.

P.S. RPG off of Destro's head was excellent.

I was never a GI Joe fan as a kid - the UK version of the GI Joe figure line was Action Man. I think we had a crappy Action Man cartoon in the 90's (Action Man the figure was cancelled and later returned - with rollerblades. They were cancelled again due to lack of interest, but now there is a new line of 10" (?) figures coming out sponsored by HM Forces.

Anyway, I've really enjoyed it, and without knowing much of the GI Joe back story, it looks like a couple of decades of GI Joe history have been resolved in the last few episodes.

Did they ever fight anybody other than Cobra?

Acually, yes. At one point a mad "toymaker" kidnapped Cobra Commander, Baroness, Flint and Lady J, then took them to his island fortress filled with robot "toys" and play "Most Dangerous Game" with them. Ultimately GIJOE and COBRA actually teamed up and launched a massive assault on the island to get their people back. It was quite a memorable episode for several reasons. First, a naked Lady J was boxed up by robot as she was changing clothes in a dressing room. Then the Baroness comforted (not in that way, you pervs) Lady J after Flint was apparently killed by a giant toy lawnmower and finally, both Joe and Cobra forces were surprisingly accurate with their weapons, since they were shooting at toy robots.

@rickie: yeah, I couldn't help but laugh at "Springfield, USA" too. Were the Joes just innately lucky enough to pick the correct Springfield from the hundreds of options across America (edit: er, 34 options [what a pointless correction])? Or maybe it's the same universe the Simpsons takes place in...?

@Warren: was that your choice, or someone else's? I guess I can imagine it being done out of an odd worry that some American audience members might get upset if their specific city was turned into a terrorist haven that had to get blowed up good, but I don't know. Just an odd quirk that gave me a chuckle.

Otherwise great enjoyable entertainment. Just finished watching, loved the Snake Eyes bits.

Cobra Commander essentially founds Cobra in a midwestern town called "Springfield". It never says WHAT Springfield in the comics or older shows. After spending years building contacts and being a fairly standard criminal, Cobra Commander found himself in Springfield. The local economy had been in the shitter for decades, and the population had a lot of reasons to hate the American government (much like the insane Cobra Commander Himself). Using what little money he had, and his charisma and criminal abilities, Cobra took over the town and made it prosperous again, gaining the love and admiration of the town. He convinced them to join his new organization, saying that he would eventually give them whatever they wanted, including money and power, as long as they followed him without question. Thus, Cobra was born.

THAT is where "Springfield, USA" comes from.

What I like about it is the 'clean-up' effect of the little plots; Characters and places removed to leave space for new ones. For someone not familiar with G.I. Joe, it's an outstanding job. And thanks for the actual 'killing'. In the original series, nobody dies, miraculously abandoning planes and tanks within a nanosecond before being blown to bits, etc.

Quite good, despite the wonky physics (H.A.A.R.P. doesn't do that, to my knowledge. And the particle cannon was silly in a James-Bond way. And it's based on a toy-line. Pinter, it ain't. Neither should it be.)
Nice to see Warren Ellis destroy a small American town and not Moscow for a change. (Although who deserves it better than Moscow? Kidding - the Russians are our "friends". )

Question to Warren - what was it like playing in the toy company sandbox? Did they send you toys? (Heh ... there's an image. Warren opening the box - "Toys? They sent me fucking toys? I SPECIFICALLY ASKED FOR WHISKEY!") Did They Mandate who got screen-time? Because I would've liked to see your take on those two creepy Cobra twin guys whose names escape me. Good job making the Baroness good'n'evil. Also, I never knew Destro was Scottish.

And when I was a kid, I had the GI Joe Space Capsule. Gave it to my cousin who's now stationed in Afghanistan, I believe. Wonder if he's still got it? (This was thirty-odd years ago. Not, like, last week or anything.)

And yes, Larry Hama is the King of Cool.

So I've got a technical question for Warren:
When you say you have no idea about the "Honor return..." screen text in the final scene and what it means, is that because someone else inserted that in the script? In capable hands, I'd say it was a nice intentional "mistake"/mis-hearing by the voice recognition system, but if it wasn't you, I'm not sure.

You had stated that about 90% of your script remained intact in this series (which seems pretty high), so is the "Honor return..." part some of the 10% that got altered? Do you have any say past a certain point, or is it "Thanks, here's your check, fuck off, we'll call you when we need you again"?

 Totally LOVED Resolute.

Blood splatter, machine gun sfx (ep6 was good), multi level command center on the FLAGG...beautiful. It was nice to see the group shot of the Joe's during Duke's briefing.

I know not many are happy by the Duke/Scarlett angle, but I for one was THRILLED! Never read the comics so the cartoon (which I was a rabid fan) was my accepted cannon. As a girl I really have to thank you for writing Scarlett the way she was. Kickass, feisty and tech savvy. Not some insipid damsel in distress.

I loved how the partnership was written out as well. I'm not sure if it was your intention but to me it came across as; he’s the ‘brawn’ and authority while she’s the ‘brains’ and takes care of the technical details, type partnership. He’s not afraid to ask her input and in fact relies on it making her a valued member of the team.

So yeah. Thank you again.

It's interesting to read this thread as someone who grew up on the Larry Hama-penned GI Joe series published by Marvel in the 80s and see all of the lack of knowledge and/or misinformation that you guys picked up from watching the cartoon back in those days. I was 7 when the cartoon started coming on, and 8 or 9 when I started reading the comics. I started picking up the comics around issue #24 (Russ Heath art!), and eventually went back and bought all of the back issues, so that at one point, when I was around 12 or 13, I had the entire run up to the current issue (this would have been around issue 75 or so).

This is the thing--the cartoon was stupid. The Marvel comic was great. I just recently purchased the first IDW trade collecting the original Marvel issues, which had issues #1-10, and while there were some 80s era comics cliches that came through in the stories that I wouldn't have noticed during my childhood (esp. over-expository dialogue/thought balloons), it's still really well-written. There's a lot of character development and interesting storylines, and I really liked that Warren's version of GI Joe acknowledged a lot of that worldbuilding originally done by Larry Hama in the comic. One significant difference I noticed was Storm-Shadow's overtly evil/anti-Snake Eyes attitude in "Resolute," which differs from what happened in the comic, since Storm-Shadow was really just using Cobra as a means to an end in the comic, and quit the organization by issue 40 or thereabouts.

Oh, and that reminds me, looneynerd, Cobra Commander's son actually didn't die--he turned up in the mid-30s of the comic book, hanging out with Storm-Shadow and working on some sort of revenge action against Cobra. There was a bunch of further conflict between he and Cobra Commander even later in the comic series, after some other high-level Cobra people (Serpentor being the main one, if memory serves) ousted him from command.

But anyway, I thought Resolute was awesome, very true to the spirit of the comics, and I'd love to see Warren do more work on GI Joe, although I can't imagine it'll happen, unfortunately.
