With possible related threads now closed, I think Whitechapel could use a newsthread-style catchall for developments on the grim meathook front. Ain't nothing better than a healthy, soulcrushing dose of pessimism.
Decided to post this as I read that 1,500 farmers have committed mass suicide in India. Any related history I've read has told me it has never, ever been a good idea to be a farmer, but I discount the feeling that this is another sign of the Earth shrugging and saying, "There's only so many of you I can take." And I've been reading a lot of Lovelock lately.
So let's all keep abreast with environmental distaster! Tent cities! Technological collapse! The futility of survivalism!
The really depressing bit: the farmer suicides aren't a new phenomenon. Pretty much every year for the past decade or so if the monsoon fails or there's an outbreak of blight you get a wave of suicides amongst Indian farmers.
Edited to add: Next year may be even worse if UG99 hits the Indian wheat crop.
Normally I’m a defender of space programs, but I really can’t believe India is spending money launching rockets with this kind of shit happening like clockwork.
1) In the last week, I survived the second round of layoffs and now, we're training [people] in India for jobs that my friends used to have.
2) There's 6.6 billion people... 1500? not even a drop in the ocean.
I have a very dystopic viewpoint about this: we're addicted to breeding - if we don't control our desire to play with the playdoh fun factory of life, it's going to more of the worst things humans do to each other. I seriously wouldn't mind it so much if India had a labor movement, but listening to "managers" directly "workers" over the phone and it's [] caste dynamic... makes me feel dirty everytime we're on the phone.
Ah that trailer brings me back to my childhood in my neck of the woods... The Orkney Child abuse scandal.... This was at a time when there was a lot of scaremongering in the UK media about scores of Satanic cults that were running paedophile rings involving their own children and children of neighbours. I even remember it on the Cook report at the time..
alas it turned out that there was no evidence to support any of this. But just becasue you can´t prove it doens´t mean it doens´t exist right?
What's so disturbing about humans treating other humans like shit?

Plan for high-speed rail system that will get me from San Francisco to San Diego at 150 mph unveiled; conservative bobbleheads whine about "government spending" while we spend more money on Iraq than has ever been spent on trains in the history of the universe.
