With possible related threads now closed, I think Whitechapel could use a newsthread-style catchall for developments on the grim meathook front. Ain't nothing better than a healthy, soulcrushing dose of pessimism.

Decided to post this as I read that 1,500 farmers have committed mass suicide in India. Any related history I've read has told me it has never, ever been a good idea to be a farmer, but I discount the feeling that this is another sign of the Earth shrugging and saying, "There's only so many of you I can take." And I've been reading a lot of Lovelock lately.

So let's all keep abreast with environmental distaster! Tent cities! Technological collapse! The futility of survivalism!

The really depressing bit: the farmer suicides aren't a new phenomenon. Pretty much every year for the past decade or so if the monsoon fails or there's an outbreak of blight you get a wave of suicides amongst Indian farmers.

Edited to add: Next year may be even worse if UG99 hits the Indian wheat crop.

So, let's see if I have any pity... uh... nope...

1) In the last week, I survived the second round of layoffs and now, we're training [people] in India for jobs that my friends used to have.

2) There's 6.6 billion people... 1500? not even a drop in the ocean.

I have a very dystopic viewpoint about this: we're addicted to breeding - if we don't control our desire to play with the playdoh fun factory of life, it's going to more of the worst things humans do to each other. I seriously wouldn't mind it so much if India had a labor movement, but listening to "managers" directly "workers" over the phone and it's [] caste dynamic... makes me feel dirty everytime we're on the phone.

So, Oxfam is saying climate change will deliver a sharp kick in the taint to humanitarian organizations over the next seven years. As everybody probably already knows, just trying to phase in electric cars ain't gonna do shit. At this point, is there anything we can really do?

I started James Lovelock's Revenge of Gaia today, and he makes some staggering observations in the first thirty pages. According to him, we need to switch to nuclear power as quickly as possible to reduce emissions, simultaneously developing truly cheap and renewable energy. The idea would be to deal with the waste later but try to save our greenhouse gas-emitting asses right now. Of course, this isn't something likely to happen as governments and corporations squabble over their preferred ways of deal with/admitting the existence of global warming. Lovelock offers some other ideas I hadn't heard about, including the proposed Severn Estuary tidal barrage.

This is what I've been thinking about since considering going back to school. I've vacillated between urban studies and environmental concerns, because those seemed to be the biggest issues for the future. But the more I look into this stuff, it looks like we all new new areas of study which combine disparate specialties - how often do scientists and researchers in different disciplines share with one another?

Lovelock also mentions offhand that oxygen is carcinogenic, but I can't find a better source on that.

Aside from the fact that cheap soda probably enables more health problems in the US than all the drug use that's ever happened since 1965, Coke and Pepsi should already always have a more expensive, real sugar line; it would make them a little money (Coke tastes hell of better anyway, and is tastier than Jones soda as well).

You can get Mexican-bottled cane-sugar Coke in Mexican groceries, but once I've committed to paying for real sugar, then hell with soda altogether I get myself a bottle of Honest Tea which is the best god damn beverage in the world. Osmosis:

As far as breeder reactors go, every single one built to date has either exploded, caught fire or melted. Except for the one in Russia that exploded, caught fire AND melted.

Also, even if breeders work as designed they would only produce 105-110% of the fuel they consume, meaning 80-90% of all reactors would need to be breeders - which are inherently more expensive than pressurised water reactors because of the need for two separate coolant cycles.

There's also the point that if we wanted to make a significant dent in total world energy demand we'd need to increase the rate of reactor construction about 10-fold, especially seeing as many older reactors will need to be repacled in the next couple of decades.

Expanding the pool of engineers capable of designing, constructing and running nuclear reactors 10-fold woudl take decades.

We're going to continue to run nuclear reactors, we'll probably end up running more than we do now - but they're no panacea for the world's energy problems.

And I haven't even mentioned the environmental and human cost of Uranium mining - the bit of the supposedly clean and safe industry people don't like to talk about.

See, and now uranium mining is something I need to look into. But as everyone reading this is probably already aware, Lovelock's idea is akin to being on a plane running low on fuel - start throwing shit out the window in the hope that it'll keep you in the air long enough to reach land.

Daniel Goleman's Ecological Intelligence came out today. It describes what little we know about how our everyday lives affect the environment. I've only flipped through it so far, and it's interesting, but I'm not sure if he acknowledges that the idea of 'sustainable development' isn't something like to help us out by this point.

A new pest, the evil pigweed, is hitting headlines and chomping its way across Sun Belt states, threatening to transform cotton and soybean plots into weed battlefields.
In late 2004, “superweeds” that resisted Monsanto’s iconic “Roundup” herbicide, popped up in GM crops in the county of Macon, Georgia. Monsanto, the US multinational biotech corporation, is the world’s leading producer of Roundup, as well as genetically engineered seeds. Company figures show that nine out of 10 US farmers produce Roundup Ready seeds for their soybean crops.

I've just been reading around on my various social networks, and so far I have to say I kind of find the various sarcastic and cynical responses to the current flu outbreak to be pretty ...offensive? ridiculous? Western-centric?Basically, I see a lot of Americans chuckling and saying, "Heh, OK, whatever - SARS didn't get me, and this won't either, la la!"

The SARS outbreaks in Asia were contained at the cost of a lot of really drastic public-health measures, including basically changing the entire subsistence culture of many poor urban-dwellers by killing every single avian life-form within the reach of the major urban centers. Do we have any Chinese, Hong Kong, Thai or other Asian members who'd like to speak to this in more direct terms and tell your stories? Because I keep seeing references to people wearing surgical masks and urban centers taking precautions as being just hilarious, and I'd love to be able to point to some first-person accounts in response.

For instance, I keep seeing this image thrown up on various cynics journals, something that represents a trope about ineffectual responses to the Black Plague:

Nevermind the fact that they are using the image inappropriately - this is an image that represents a culture desperate to escape a really, actually horrible plague, and now it has been turned around to represent media over-blownness.

Are we just collectively whistling past the graveyard or what?

The week it hit, I was working at a huge booksale down the street from where the first cases were. I didn't get it. My friend's wife worked at a hospital and was quarantined.SARS was kinda scary here. In Asia, I think it was much worse.

Anytime I hear some official announcing death tolls, I think of that Monty Python sketch where you have to multiply whatever the chap says by ten. @mrarey: I'll go ahead and take the bet now that no racist backlash attacks happen, because no severe outbreak of swine flu in America happens that kills anyone but the very old, very young, and already very feeble, just like every flu.

Really not worried about this until I'm given concrete reason to be, which has yet to happen.

@Ian: 1 + 1 + 1 = 3, a very small number. Almost as small as 1 even. I think rounding that all the way up to Fuck is a bit premature yet.

As far as the numbers being downplayed, I don't think so. Mexico's already shut down their schools and public events, they're already taking the hit to tourism regardless of what happens, at this point the cat's out of the bag, there's no gain to lying about the numbers of infected/deceased. (The only inaccuracy I imagine happening will just be from imperfect data collection, which is tough anyway with flu-tracking.) And considering the CDC hasn't even said to stop traveling to Mexico, on top of which right now we've got, what, 20 confirmed American cases out of literally thousands and thousands of Americans who've recently been to Mexico, and none of those cases have ended in anything but recovery...?

Yeah. Not worrisome. Not yet. (For me. Here in America. Other people will surely be fucked and I'm sad for that, but American Panic Time is still far off and too many of us [even on these forums] love to exhibit such a hair-trigger desire to start smashing that panic button early.)

And yes, the situation is awful in Mexico and for all those infected. But as it is, if you aren't already included in the preceding sentence, NO REASON TO GET SCARED. It's the fucking flu. Happens every year. Entire point of the comment about who will likely die from it, and why that's not reason enough to trigger racist backlash because it's no different than any other year. And, oh yeah, how weird about the demographic of who's already been killed in Mexico. Why don't we go ahead and compare that, though, to the demographic of infected who've already died in America...? Oh, wait, no, that number doesn't exist because it hasn't happened yet. 40 confirmed cases now, still no deaths. Of course there will be, but it's not going to be nearly as bad as we've seen in Mexico. And whatever it is, in all likelihood it will still show nothing statistically significant in difference than every tally the flu takes every year.

If shit gets worse, shit gets worse. Just don't act like it's already there and already worth freaking out about. Is all I'm saying. Unless you get off on living in fear (again, possibly the point of this thread...?). I hear asteroids can hit the planet and also, sometimes planes crash. I also get in my car daily and drive on the Interstate at speeds in excess of 70 mph, and hear that can be dangerous. Every year I skip getting a flu shot but know there's a chance I could get the flu. Every year. And I also know, every year, that people that get the flu could get terribly unlucky and end up getting killed by it. Every year. And yet, I don't worry about asteroids, I love traveling by plane, I speed every single day, I even get impatient when I'm in the fast line behind someone that isn't speeding (but probably technically driving "safer" than me), and I still won't be getting a flu shot this year, unless I see compelling reason to, which I haven't yet. Despite the fact I live in a big city with a big airport in a state with confirmed cases of swine flu.

Crazy how happy I am with this sort of existence.

@mrarey: obviously 9/11 and the flu aren't comparable as motivators for violence, but, maybe, just maybe, if shit hits the fan, yeah, I can see the backlash. But that's my point, I wager it never even comes close to that.

Big reason why I expect Mexico's large numbers (even potentially low-balling the true figures) aren't really much reason to assume the worst about swine flu as it spreads to other countries: Mexico's been handling this outbreak the way a more incompetent version of the Bush administration would.
Despite an annual budget of more than $5 billion, Mexico's health secretary said Monday that his agency hasn't had the resources to visit the families of the dead. That means doctors haven't begun treatment for the population most exposed to swine flu, and most apt to spread it. It also means medical sleuths don't know how the victims were infected — key to understanding how the epidemic began and how it can be contained.

It remained unclear where and how the epidemic began, how it has spread, who it has killed or how fast it is growing. And the government has yet to take some basic steps critical to containing any outbreak, such as quick treatment of people who had contact with the victims. In the town of Xonacatlan, just west of Mexico City, Antonia Cortes Borbolla told The Associated Press that nobody has given her medicine in the week since her husband succumbed to raging fever and weakened lungs that a lab has confirmed as swine flu. No health workers have inspected her home, asked how her husband might have contracted the illness or tested the neighbors' pigs, she said.
Not exactly the best way to handle an outbreak. I almost feel bad for Cordova.

Hospitals overwhelmed. Schools closed. Swaths of empty seats at baseball stadiums and houses of worship. An economic recovery snuffed out. We're nowhere close to what government planners say would be a worst-case scenario: a global flu pandemic. But government leaders at all levels, and major employers, have spent nearly four years planning for one in series of exercises.Their reports, reviewed by The Associated Press, and interviews with participants paint a grim picture of what could happen if the swine flu gets severely out of control. A full-scale pandemic — if it ever comes — could be expected to claim the lives of about 2 percent of those infected, about 2 million Americans.

I like that 2 million dead Americans (forget you foriegn godless heathens) is just one sentence from empty sporting events. People like to remind IT folks about Y2K all the time, smugly stating that it was a huge overblown bunch of hype because no planes fell out of the sky and the Internet didn't crash. That attitude really chaps my ass, because it took the hard work of a whole lot of people over a couple of years to make sure that shit did not happen. I like Baby Jesus better than Grown-Up Jesus*.

* - Grown-Up Jesus knew more hookers on a first-name basis than Baby Jesus. Although 'Virgin Birth' sounds increasingly like a desperate teenage mother's cover-story. Nowadays, 'cover' as in 'cover of the Rolling Stone'. Which was written by Shel Silverstein. Yes, THAT Shel Silverstein. (Giving Tree, Where The Sidewalk Ends, all that crap.)

... is the thread back on track? Excellent, he said, EXACTLY like Mr. Burns.

Does anybody, by chance, remember "Wag the dog"?? With Dustin Hofmann, Bob DeNiro and Anne Heche? Come on, guys, it's a fucking curtain! A distraction. And me saying that doesn't means I'm a conspiracy theory freak (maybe I am ,though) and doesn't means I'm a sensless unempathethic son of a bitch. It is sad that people are dying, and I regret. But, here, big news: PEOPLE DIE ALL THE TIME! EVERY FRRAGGING DAY!!! Like it or not, this is just another trend of the mass media, the new hype, conceived to conceal something! Conceal what?? I don't know!! I'm not politician, nor secret agent. And I know that's better not to say anything if I'm just gonna speak for the sake of it, but I can see that's pretty obvious.
Here, an example: until two or three weeks ago, here in Argentina the news where talking anbout the dengue, a disease that comes from the bite of a mosquito. Suddenly, wham!!! national state of alert!! People, get rid of your junk!! We must declare war to the mosquito!! Oh, 200 cases confirmed!! Beware!! You know, just data and statistics that, oh funny, came from the National Institute of Statistics, the same fucking institution that says every month, that the unemployment rate dropped 15%, and counting! But, oddly enough, one of four young men in this country is stil unemployed or has been fired, recently!! Where was I? Oh, right, dengue. One week, we're fighintg with the mosquito, and all of the sudden, we're fighting against HAM!! Ham, bacon, pork chops, et-fucking-cetera!!!! One week, the government is launching preventive campaigns, `putting people on the street, working, and waving hads, saying "be careful, lady neighbor, with them mosquitos!!" and the news on the tv talk nothing else but dengue; then, SHAZAM!!! swine flu, panic, red alert, defcon five... and like that, *poofff*, the dengue is gone! Like magic.
Correct if I'm wrong, but the shit smells like shit anywhere in the wold, right?
