    Get ready to meet the private police force.

    I mainly picked up the Lovelock book because I like the idea of Gaia theory. That said, I'm still casting about for good refutations of his claims. He is definitely arguing the worst case scenario, a technique which has its merits, but most reactions I find are based on an op-ed piece whose length doesn't allow it to get too deep in statistics.

    Actually, this could be a good counterargument. I'll have to get back to it when I'm not so tired.

    Thee different people playing loud rap with their mobiles just on the light rail today. The average is one per car. They bob their heads in such a self-satisfied way as if to say I am absolutely oblivious to how fucking annoying I am. It's the little things that really drive home how much I want dangerous psychokinetic powers.

    Govt 'violence manual' raises China net users' ire

    Extracts from what appears to be a government manual telling law enforcers how to use violence have caused outrage among internet users in China.

    Details from the guide were published online and in a state newspaper.

    One passage advises: "Take care to avoid leaving blood on the subject's face or visible wounds on the body."

    The official who circulated the extracts said he thought much of the guide was useful but some parts were inappropriate.

    The guide is aimed at local government enforcers who are employed to deal with low-level crime such as checking permits and removing unlicensed street vendors.

    They have often been accused of using excessive force.

    Well, what else did these "internet users" believe was the purpose of police wearing weapons? Police use weapons to employ violence on citizens. Only difference between the cops and the robbers is the cops want you (well, just the affluent and enfranchised) to forget that part. Naturally therefore the police have PR policies dictating the use of violence, and we citizens shouldn't bitch about it unless we're ready to ask why we let police have the power to beat and kill people in the first place.

    Don`t look now, but Mexico city is on a epidemy of influenza, 20+ death confirmed and 900+ suspected cases...

    If this turns to be a HUGE epidemy... we could have a good idea of how a epidemic apocalypse could goes... Mexico city have almost 25 million of people, living very very close...

    Now, after saying this, im going to try to figure how to go back home avoiding big concentrations of people (gov suggestion)... since the company is sending all people home, right now.

    Also, the rage in Mexico city today are the Facemask, if im able to take a picture of a big group of people using them, i post the pic tonight :).

    The World Health Organisation said on Saturday it will hold an emergency meeting at 1400 GMT to discuss a deadly swine flu strain outbreak in Mexico and the United States. WHO Director-General Margaret Chan called the "virtual meeting" that will link public health authorities and experts in various parts of the world "to seek their advice and guidance," WHO spokesman Fadela Chaib said. Chan will also brief journalists about the outbreak -- which has killed up to 68 people in Mexico and infected 8 in the United States -- on a teleconference before the virtual meeting starts, at 1300 GMT. The experts will not necessarily issue firm recommendations on Saturday. Once more details are clear about the virus and its risks, the emergency panel could recommend a change in the WHO's pandemic alert level -- currently at 3 on a scale of 1 to 6 -- or recommend travel advisories to control the flu's spread.

    Mexico swine flu outbreak is 'potential pandemic'

    I find myself unable to properly respond to this information. The cynical side of me says, "Ho hum, more disaster porn distracting from real news," while the credulous mammal in me says, "Surgical masks and Tamiflu now, please." I feel like the right response should be sometime between now and hearing "Bring out your dead!" in the streets, but don't want to be caught out being either a cynic or a fool.

    I currently work from home quite a lot and get most things delivered, so holing up in the house and riding out an outbreak in Boston really wouldn't involve much of a lifestyle change apart from maybe keeping the kid out of school.

    Last figures I saw were 68 dead out of around 1,000 cases. That's a 6-7% fatality rate compared with 15% or more for the Spanish flu and 2% for SARS. hopefully that'll come down now that medical authorities are aware of the risks.

    Somehow... im still alive...

    LOL i always wanted to say that, ha ha ha.

    Well, Mexico have a high developed culture to fight disasters, the earthquake of 1985 kill many and since then, i think that the usually useless MX government are quite good at fighting the results of the disasters.

    No pic of Face mask yesterday, the fear win and i accept a ride to my home from one of buddies at work, and im not leaving my house this weekend... i wonder , how much a influenza epidemic last ???

    Northern winter? Is there something I don't know about?

    The /1000 cases should be lowered minus however many just happen to have the regular flu, last I read we can't keep up with confirming what's what, so in other words the death rate for swinepocalypse might be higher already.
