    Seriously. In the grand scale of pathogen danger, swine flu is piddly and will probably be short-lived. The Great Swine Flu Pants-Crapping really shows how soft the US is. If something seriously bad ever comes our way, we're fucked.

    I'm not really feeling Sterling's point here. Yeah, AIDS is the new normal - after the loss of a good chunk of a generation and a major shift in sexual behavior, sure. A whole lot of people took it on the chin to get to that point. So now we should just ignore early warnings about potential new pandemics because, whew, we rode that last one out?

    This comes up all the time about Y2K. Remember that? People like to remind IT folks about Y2K all the time, smugly stating that it was a huge overblown bunch of hype because no planes fell out of the sky and the Internet didn't crash. That attitude really chaps my ass, because it took the hard work of a whole lot of people over a couple of years to make sure that shit did not happen. Me, I'm starting to think at least one air traffic control systems coder should have left in a couple of '00' errors just to show 'em.

    Some advocates of tighter immigration rules are jumping on the swine flu public health emergency to call for the closing of the border with Mexico, including a ban on all air and ground traffic and importation of products.

    "The Obama administration's failure to secure our borders against a possible pandemic is putting American lives at risk at a time when days and hours matter," said William Gheen, head of the Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, accusing the Obama administration of "treating Mexico like a 51st state, instead of separate nation."

    Naaahhh, they would no do that, they would not strangle themselves, we are one and probably the first nation that them "leech" for prime materials, and we buy a lot of their products, if the USA close the borders, the economics in both nations would sink, the final blow for the Detroit car industry, since many of their cars are build in Mexico plants... obviously , they can build plants in other third world countries, but in this depression days ? another plant with who's money ?

    Also, the main problem is in Mexico city, not in Tijuana or in the other border cities, but if the spread keeps going strong for maybe a month... puff. Today the govs are saying: "get ready for a looong state of emergency, this virus is not leaving our city quickly" anyone have an idea of how much time a spread like this last ? any Chinese aviary experience ?

    And a last cherry: Today's rumor is that the Carroll Farms , a suspected "first infection" place, has close ties with the local government, and the first influenza cases were on December 08, and that all that was covered by govs officials that has money on the farms... the rumor is probably originated from the light-quick reaction of the govs of Perote Veracruz, the place were the porcine farms are located... when the farms were pointed as one of the possible sources, the govs went to the media to say that the Carrolls farms were not involved in any way on this... but there are reports, and the people of Perote were always complaining about the diseases provoked by the garbage of the farms... and obviously, there are a lot of rumors.

    -given us all the death flu

    I figure six months from now the US will just be large pyres and a few scattered libertarian enclaves shooting at each other.

    Not too far of a stretch. Generally the first thing that pops into my head when I watch Fox News is meathook. Also chainsaw, neutron bomb, weaponized whisky shits, battlebots, some sort of device that hucks pennies at heads with great accuracy and speed, sometimes just gun.

    I really cannot wait until 500 years from now when Fox News begins blaming Obama for our loss in the Martian Spice War of 2440 and our faltering peace talks with Tatooine.

    Does anybody, by chance, remember "Wag the dog"?? With Dustin Hofmann, Bob DeNiro and Anne Heche? Come on, guys, it's a fucking curtain! A distraction. And me saying that doesn't means I'm a conspiracy theory freak (maybe I am ,though) and doesn't means I'm a sensless unempathethic son of a bitch. It is sad that people are dying, and I regret. But, here, big news: PEOPLE DIE ALL THE TIME! EVERY FRRAGGING DAY!!! Like it or not, this is just another trend of the mass media, the new hype, conceived to conceal something! Conceal what?? I don't know!! I'm not politician, nor secret agent. And I know that's better not to say anything if I'm just gonna speak for the sake of it, but I can see that's pretty obvious.
    Here, an example: until two or three weeks ago, here in Argentina the news where talking anbout the dengue, a disease that comes from the bite of a mosquito. Suddenly, wham!!! national state of alert!! People, get rid of your junk!! We must declare war to the mosquito!! Oh, 200 cases confirmed!! Beware!! You know, just data and statistics that, oh funny, came from the National Institute of Statistics, the same fucking institution that says every month, that the unemployment rate dropped 15%, and counting! But, oddly enough, one of four young men in this country is stil unemployed or has been fired, recently!! Where was I? Oh, right, dengue. One week, we're fighintg with the mosquito, and all of the sudden, we're fighting against HAM!! Ham, bacon, pork chops, et-fucking-cetera!!!! One week, the government is launching preventive campaigns, `putting people on the street, working, and waving hads, saying "be careful, lady neighbor, with them mosquitos!!" and the news on the tv talk nothing else but dengue; then, SHAZAM!!! swine flu, panic, red alert, defcon five... and like that, *poofff*, the dengue is gone! Like magic.
    Correct if I'm wrong, but the shit smells like shit anywhere in the wold, right?
