First, the request: I'm looking to take over an old domain (5+ years) that receives a very large amount of spam, to the point where it is useless to you.

The short explanation: I'm going to going for some security certifications that require doing original security research and need it as an academic research tool. Yes, I need your spam.

    The background:

I'm currently working as an IT consultant, and one of my former employers had such a domain very similar to (let's say) abc-123.com. They had been pretty careless with it in the early 90's, and when the spam really started to get serious in '00 they took the drastic step of retiring it and registering a new name.

Many years later around '05, my work buddy and I had to renew and reactivate the domain to receive something the owner needed. We stood up an old Linux server or something and pointed the domain name at it, went off to lunch or something and by the time we came back, the spam had filled up the disk. We got a better server and upgraded and just watched dumbfounded as the disks chattered and the T1 groaned under the weight of it.

It was awe-inspiring, like watching video of a great tsunami or a shark feeding frenzy. We played with it for days like poking a captive bear with a stick, testing all kinds of spam fighting tools, trying to identify patterns or just running the text through some Markov chain programs for cut-up poetry. And reading this article recently reminded that what we really had was a massive, captive parallel processing engine just begging to be harnessed. Sadly, we lost access to it when both of us changed employers.

Now I'm going to be going for some security certifications for which it would be a really tremendously useful tool, as well as just plain fun. I'd need control of the domain, so the registration needs to be active and I'd need it transferred to me. I'd be willing to pay a moderate amount for the trouble. I'd also immediately in the short term be testing a wide variety of antispam tools and would be happy to share the results back here.

So please, Whitechapel - I know this crowd has got to have some old, crusty domain names in their closets, which is why I turn to you. It would really need to be a dramatic amount of spam, 500-1000 messages per day.

And yeah, this really is my idea of fun on a Saturday night. Email direct to [myusername] @ [myusername].net if you want.

Hey, I spent my Saturday night reading up on Samuel the I of Bulgaria and the Battle of Trajan's Gate.
