Ooh, yeah, the Death album was recorded in 1974 by three teenaged brothers. The two songs that were released as a single, "Politicians In My Eyes" and one other, became super-sought-after on the Killed-By-Death rare punk collector scum circuit, and then about two years ago the son of one of the band members, who is himself a musician, heard the single at a party and was like "I think this is my dad!" So he called his dad, found out that, yes, it was his band, and his dad was really surprised to learn that their single goes for $500 now. He also let his son know that he had a full album's worth of material on tapes in his attic, and so he and his son worked together to get a release for the whole album, which is what "For All The World To See" is. It's a great record, and unfortunately, the guitarist, who wrote the music, died years ago and didn't get to see the critical reception his band is getting now. But there's talk of the band reforming to tour behind the album, with the son of the bassist/singer playing guitar in place of his uncle. I hope that pans out, I'd love to see them play.

Anyway, back on topic, I'm really into the Ida Maria album too, and I'm amazed I'm not the first person to bring it up. It's an excellent half-hour blast of garage punk power pop by an exuberant Norwegian girl, who is singing blackly comic lyrics about how socially awkward she is even as the songs themselves have a really upbeat celebratory sound. Fucking outstanding album.

I'm not as into the new Riverboat Gamblers, "Underneath The Owl," as I was into "To The Confusion Of Our Enemies," but it's still pretty good and may grow on me. The sound is a bit poppier than the previous album was, and that one was a bit poppier than the one before. I'm afraid they're going to get to the point where they're really just a pop band and not a punk band anymore, and that's when I think they'll lose me.

Silversun Pickups' new one is indeed awesome, and even as their expanding on their sound a bit, the whole shoegaze/Smashing Pumpkins vibe is still very present and they've lost none of what I liked about their debut. I think they're going in a good direction to have a productive career.

The Japandroids full-length, "Post-Nothing," has a few really good songs and a few that I'm not that stoked about. They're this two-piece band with hazy guitars but propulsive songwriting that is getting props from the Pitchfork crowd. I think their songwriting is pretty inconsistent, which is kind of their downfall.

I'm equally divided on the new Superdrag album, "Industry Giants," but that one gets more of a pass from me because it's their first album in damn near a decade and I'm just excited that they're making records again. There are some great slabs of distorted-guitar power pop on there from John Davis, but he's letting other members of the band write and sing now, and some of those songs are noticeably inferior to his usual standard. I'm all for band democracy in theory, but when a band's main songwriter is obviously more talented than the other members, there's something to be said for purity of vision.

I'm with the few of you that are not that into the new Mastodon. Hell, Mastodon lost me with "Leviathan," though. I miss their heavier sound from the early days.

I'm really excited to hear the new albums from Sonic Youth, Future Of the Left, and Graf Orlock, but at this moment, I still haven't heard any of them, so I don't want to comment.
